Overview

Basically British is located in downtown Dayton in an old building known as The Cannery. In past years, the building was extensively remodeled to incorporate almost two hundred lofts, along with several retail establishments. The style of the building makes it a particularly suitable setting for us: high ceilings, brick walls, elegant woodwork, attractive windows, hardwood floors, etc.

We have attempted to make our tea room ambiance elegant and inviting, as well as "male-friendly," and it has become a favorite location for local business groups to enjoy a quiet interlude.

The three-tier afternoon tea includes a four-cup pot of tea freshly brewed from loose tea for each person, and each guest may make their own choice from a collection of over 85 loose-leaf varieties. We provide teas we feel will be especially interesting, many of which have won international awards over the last few years. In addition, all of them are available for purchase by the ounce at our tea bar in the main retail area.

We change the afternoon tea menu each month and the current menu is posted on our web site. We try to provide an interesting array of food items each month, rather than just scones and standard tea sandwiches, and everything is cooked in our own kitchen.

We also have a tea bar where visitors may drop in and have a fresh pot of tea and scones or order a cup of tea to go.

We offer a monthly email newsletter listing the current menu and giving news of events related to the tea room.

In addition to the tea room, we have an associated shop where we carry a variety of British products, including preserves, toiletries, cards, books, English bone china and assorted gift items.

Having been to many tea rooms, this one is definitely one of our favorites! The experience is simply wonderful....and the food is definitely second to NONE.
Thank you, Vicky and Terry.

We visited our favorite English tea room again in July and were once again treated to a lovely afternoon. Terry goes over their extensive tea menu, making suggestions for teas you will enjoy, based on your tastes. Vicky, once again, prepared a lovely tiered tray of tea goodies. We have heard American sausage is nothing like the English version. After oohing and ahhing over the sausage spiral rolls, Vicky shared that she ground the sausage herself. The quality of homemade food is so evident in their tea food. They certainly go above and beyond in making our tea visits a very indulgent experience.

What a wonderful experience! My two sisters and I had the opportunity to enjoy afternoon tea at Basically British. We sampled three different teas and devoured the goodies on the 3-tier tea menu. Just a splendid experience with friendly service. Can't wait to come back!

Basically British offers over 80 teas presented in a logical order in the tea menu. Terry's clear and concise explanations of the varieties was delightful and helpful in the selection process.
The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The atmosphere is charming but not stiff or stuffy. The experience has convinced my husband and I that we will become 'regulars' (and made us yearn for a return trip to London, England).

Basically British is formal but not stuffy, pretty but not prissy. The tea list is clearly presented and logically arranged. Perfectly brewed teas arrive in pots wrapped in cozies: fancy prints with ribbons for ladies, plain wrappers for gents. On our recent visit, the menu included two scone varieties, tea sandwiches, miniature savory pies, curried eggs and springerle cookies displaying UK national symbols—beautifully homemade and delicious. Proprietor Terry Ronald is a gracious presence, providing helpful suggestions with wit and tact. It can't be done much better than this.

Took my mom there for her 80th birthday, along with my aunt, we had a wonderfully elegant and delicious tea. If you want a taste of Britain in the U.S. I recommend it highly

A calm and elegant but not at all stuffy atmosphere, an extensive selection of teas, friendly service, and sensational food make this an outstanding tea room. The cranberry and rose scone
was amazing; the tart with banana and toffee was one of the most delectable desserts I've ever tasted, and every other item on the
tiered tray was delicious, too.

I went with my mother and a friend, and we had an excellent time. The atmosphere is reminiscent of England and very comfortable, and we were unrushed and allowed to savor our teas. Each tea I tried was excellent. The food was wonderful, but shockingly my favorites were the scones--quite simply the best scones I've ever had, even better than the ones I had in England! I especially appreciated the guidance in making a tea selection, which makes the huge selection of teas less daunting. The price for tea seems a bit pricey at first, but you get plenty of food and plenty of tea, and in hindsight it's really not expensive for the amount and quality of it. I wish I still lived in Dayton and could frequent the shop!

We spent an idyllic afternoon here as a Christmas treat from my sister and it was absolutely wonderful! We plan on making it a holiday tradition for just us girls!
