How can one complain about Captain's Cottage in Pinole Ca. The small, but quaint tea parlor is perfect for just about anyone and everyone wanting to enjoy a cup of tea. Located right off San Pablo Avenue, you enter an old Victorian house, and be immediately greeted by Lois, the owner and server dressed in a 19th Century outfit. Not only is she inviting, attentive, and pleasant, but she also provides you with history about Pinole, and its origin. For $17.00, you spend two hours having someone serve you 'hand and foot' by the sound of a bell. Although many tea parlors have extensive tea menus and food choices, Captain Cottage does its best to perserve what a tea house really is.

Although it's true that this tea room is in a quaint old house, the very limited menu and food quality would keep me from returning. Because there is no real kitchen, there is no variety of items available. Cheese spread on crackers does not suffice as an hors d'oeuvre.

Tearoom Response
Melanie, we completely updated our menu in January of 2008, so that a consistent, high-quality service would be our trademark. No cheese and crackers here. I'm sincerely sorry that you won't return. Please look at the other recent reviews for confirmation of our well-received updates.

What an lovely experience! As we enjoyed the delicious food and, we were charmed by the elegant ambiance and enchanted by the exquisite service, which included delightful stories and engaging poetry. Having visited many of the tearooms listed on your top 100, I was surprised that this wonderful tearoom was not at the top of that list. I would encourage others to enjoy this best kept secret of the East Bay.

This is a wonderful place. The atmosphere is inviting, warm, and a place like home. As you enter this beautiful victorian home, you are greeted with the likeness of a doll house decor. A great variety of tea and a wonderful selection of finger food. In addition to the great tea, tasty finger food and the wonderful ambience, you are entertained by Lois's colorful story telling. This is a great place for the young, old and in between. I love Lois, she is a wonderful person to meet and offer an expereince you'll never forget

I LOVE this place--and have been going there for the past 5 years or so. Ever since we had tea with Mary Poppins in Disneyland, my daughters and I have loved a traditional English high tea service. This is a quaint little place and the atmosphere is so relaxed--we can sit for hours and talk and sip tea. The selection is wonderful, and the owners are a delight. The rumor goes that the cottage was owned by a Portugese ship captain who's been long dead--but who still can be heard chuckling and drifting about the lovely ladies sipping their tea. Do order the Buckingham Palace Tea Party tea--it's a delightful cross between Earl Grey and a Jasmine type tea, and it comes with it's own special teapot and cup set. If you have a party of 7, ask to be seated in the Captain's room--they have spe... (more)

I highly recommend this place for those of you who want some TLC- because I really felt lovingly cared for by the waitress. The Devonshire cream was my favorite part of the food. I rated the quality of food as good instead of excellent because of one little thing- the salad greens were missing something little but I don't know what. I loved the special card and notebook I purchased to send to my aunt who loves tea. The recipe book I purchased was OK. Still, I am looking forward to finding more stuff to purchase on my next visit. I am even bringing several men in our family because I know they will love the food and drink. And they served apple juice in a teapot for my brother- the only non-tea drinker among us.

I am absolutly in love with this place. From the moment i walked in to the old victorian decorated, cozy little home, to the time i left, I had a blast. I find myself going back again and again. The woman who runs the place is so sweet and she even dresses up in old victorian clothes. She tells you stories about 'the Captain' and about the different teas. The food is great! i love the scones and the different jams. My favorite tea is the Monks tea. There is a good variety of food and teas and the price is good too. check it out, it is a fun place!

I experienced my first tea ever at the Captain's Cottage, and I loved it! In fact, I have been back to the Cottage several times. The hostesses are always very warm and attentive, and if you have a listening ear, they are always ready to share stories about the Captain which really adds to the atmosphere of the cottage. I do not drink black or green teas, so I’m always thrilled by the variety of delicious herbal teas on the menu. The food is always mouth-watering delicious.

I live in Idaho now, but whenever I am back in the area, I make a special effort to get back to the Captain's Cottage! I highly recommend it!

The Captains Tea Cottage is a great place to go any time! It has a very relaxing atmosphere and the people who work there are very kind and welcoming. There are so many cute little things to buy! The tea is marvelous! It's served with a smile too!Personally, my favorite tea is Vanilla. The Catains Tea Cottage has a great vanilla tea! Whoever finds anything wrong with this warm friendly experience must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed! I will definitely spread the word about the Captains Tea Cottage!

Captain's Cottage has been a treasured haunt for the female members of my family for years. We have hosted an intimate bridal shower for my sister-in-law in the Captain's Room and given each other numerous 'gift certificates' at birthday or mother's day time.
The atmosphere is intimate, cozy and delicate. The decor is an attractive and ecclectic mix of pieces, with many fun items to purchase (both tea related and otherwise) nestled in the nooks and cranies. 'The Captain' is a very real presence in the tea room, with the pleasant staff more than willing to discuss his last voyage or his favorite tea with you.
Each person selects their own loose tea, with an array of green, black, estate, and even an herbal tea that works for those who must avoid caffeine. The food is appropr... (more)

The atmosphere is great. Everyone was very friendly as we all moved around to see all the different items for sale. My Mom, Sister, Sister-in-law and myself had a wonderful 2 1/2 tea...free from children and husbands and housework...etc. It was very relaxing and and laid back. The food was great. I thought I would still be hungry when it was done, but when we left we were all stuffed. I am planning to go back in the next few weeks...and I can't wait!

I have been to many tea rooms, and this one is one of my favorites. There was a nice variety of loose teas, and the food was excellent. The rooms had pretty decorations. There was a large group in another room, and the hostess was able to close the door to that room so we could visit quietly at our table without being disturbed. The music being played was nice.

The Captain's Cottage is our favorite place to celebrate with friends. The atmosphere is so warm and friendly it feels like coming home. The decor changes often and it is always fun to see what is new and different. There are so many unique items for sale at very reasonable prices; it is like a treasure hunt. The tea is delicious with a wide variety, something for everyone's taste. Our favorites are the Captain's Treasure Chest, Vanilla, and Ginger Peach. The food is good, tasty bites with lots of variety. The leisurely pace allows for good conversation with friends. Be sure and ask for a story about the Captain. It is great fun!

I had high hopes when I saw the cute exterior of this house, but couldn't have been more disappointed. The gift items scattered about are poor quality and over priced, the table we had by the window had patio chairs to sit in, and the menu was dictated by what the owner had on hand that day to serve. If you want choices, quality tea, and more than cheese spread on crackers for savories, go somewhere else.

Maureen, it sounds like our style just doesn't connect with you. I'm sincerely sorry that you were so disappointed.

A group of friends brought me here as a surprise for my birthday and I just loved it, the food is wonderful and the atmosphere is fabulous. I am coming back with my sister as I know she will love it.

This Victorian Tea House is more like a cozy home. Very relaxing atmosphere and very accomodating to vegetarians and diabetics. The hosts are always cheery and friendly. You leave the tea house rejuventated and satisfied.
