My experience with De'Tours began with a walking tour of Elizabeth City's historical district -- my hostess Bonnie was informative and engaging. The tour ended at her home with a delightful tea -- wonderful tea, delicious scones and lemon cakes. Bonnie also gave the history of her home and many of the Victorian furnishings. It was a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon -- highly recommended!

Hosted our party here last month. What a beautiful home! Our tea and tour was perfect. The hostess, Bonnie was so informative and we learned so much about the history of the town and homes. We came back for a Victorian tea to die for. The tablesetting was spot on as the food. The owner goes out of her way to make you feel special. A wonderful way to spend your afternoon in a quaint historic town.

What an enjoyable experience. A step back in time when women wore hats and actually sat down to eat with fine china, silver and linens. Bonnie exudes her love for antiques and her humor comes through as she shares the history of the home and furnishings. The food was light fare, tasty, and well presented. I will definitely come back.

My daughter surprised me with an intimate tea party for two.(I am undergoing chemotherapy so she flew in from Arizona to check on her mommie and to take me for tea.) Bonnie's De'Tours of Elizabeth City is absolutely beautiful with her fabulous and generous tour of her home. The food presentation was 'spot-on' and melted in our mouth. Teas were delightful and served piping hot. We enjoyed ourselves and it was such a welcomed distraction from all the doctors' appointments and chemo sessions. Thanks, Bonnie for everything and making this day a memorable one!

My friends, daughter, and two young granddaughters enjoyed a wonderful tea this afternoon. My 9 year old granddaughter loves this tea house and made sure she used the sugar cubes in her tea. Bonnie Calliotte(the tea lady)even presented a vintage high chair for my 11 month old granddaughter to use. We thank Bonnie for a wonderful experience on this warm day in June. May 15th 2013

Fantastic, what an experience. I have had tea at most of the Tea establishments shown on Tea Map in the Greater Hampton Roads area and this place stands alone! It is no wonder they were voted one of the top ten tearooms in the US. This place is exceptional. On arrival our names were on a welcome sign outside, from the minute we entered we were warmly welcomed and treated like royalty. We were introduced to teas we would never dreamed of having. Our scones were light, and the devonshire cream to die for. The food exceptionally fresh with beautiful presentation including fresh flowers. The service is professional and friendly, you can tell the owner loves doing what she does. This is a first class act which other Tea Houses don't even come close to, you arrive as customers and leave as friends, a rare gift in today's world. Make reservations, as she can get busy! Thank you De'Tours for an absolutely delightful afternoon spent in your little slice of heaven.

Bonnie is one of a kind. The enthusiasm for what she does is so obvious, it draws you into the past not only with the history of the city, but a true Victorian tea, which is an art that is almost forgotten. We had a wonderful tea party - and I don't mean the Boston variety! Bonnie was gracious and enthusiastic and went to great effort to welcome and adapt her menu to my 4 and 6 year old granddaughters. I believe she called it a 'Teddy Bear Tea' and appropriately, each girl received a white bear to take home. A very nice touch! The girls were introduced to proper tea etiquette and we all learned about the history behind many of the serving pieces and antiques in her lovely Victorian home. The food was delicious and certainly plentiful: my granddaughters loved (and depleted) her sugar cubes! I hope to return and have time to take the historic city tour next time.

      “The most FANTASTIC Morning!”

This weekend my sorority sisters and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary. We were so excited to see one another, many of us having not seen each other in at least 8 years, and wanted to create the most memorable experience where we could do the most interesting things and still spend quality time with one another. We were lucky to find De'Tours in Elizabeth City on the local visitors bureau's website under the 'things to do' tab. Bonnie, owner of De'Tours in Elizabeth City immediately responded when we reached out to her, she was open to accommodating us up to the final minutes before our tea even when we had fluctuating head counts and additional sorority sisters that were not accounted for showed up to the tea. She was so gracious, easing my anxiety (as I was afraid that we were inconveniencing her). She quickly reassured me 'not to worry, its okay', made them a place setting, and gave each of them her undivided attention. If you are considering a beautiful uber feminine experience, with a host that is knowledgeable of the historic homes history, the overall cities history, and great information overall...De'Tours in Elizabeth City is the place. The tea was the most delicious and flavorful I have ever had, I think we talked about it through the morning. The chicken salad sandwiches and goat cheese and fig sandwiches were my favorites, however everything was so delicious its really hard to even choose a favorite. I can not say enough about De'Tours! Its my new favorite place and I will most certainly be back every time I get to Elizabeth City!!! Check it out, you will not be disappointed!

After a very entertaining tour of historic Elizabeth City we had tea in Bonnie's 1853 brick home. Painstakingly restored in a six year process the surroundings truly let you travel back to the Victorian age. The all homemade tea time was excellent and we know quite a few comparisons (we live in Victoria, BC). The hospitality is second to none. We were treated like old friends rather than tour guests. Time flew by. This is the best tea time experience we ever had in a very friendly and private atmosphere. Thank you Bonnie, we will come back sometimes.

Miss Bonnie's enthusiasm for tea was evident when my group of 6 visited her for tea the first week in October. An added bonus to our delightful experience was Miss Bonnie's knowledge of her tea accroutrements. She served us using fine china hand-painted by her great-grandmother. Every tea accessory had a story and Miss Bonnie was eager to share. We were served a berry tea by Harney & Sons and Ginger Peach by Bentley. Both teas were contained in tea bags. The Ginger Peach was my favorite and normally, I don't like ginger, but 2 lumps of sugar really brought out the flavor and even softened it to make it very enjoyable for me to sip. My group was not hungry, but Miss Bonnie gave each of us a tasty sweet treat to enjoy nibbling while sipping our tea. We thoroughly enjoyed Miss Bonnie's conversation, which included her sharing with us a lot of history regarding her home and the family heirlooms. I found it very interesting and it made the tea experience more special. If I'm ever in North Carolina again, I will definitely visit De'Tours in Elizabeth City again.

The tea was excellent, as was the food. The historic home was incredible; very well done and the owners have every right to be extemely proud of their accomplishments in restoring this wonderful home.

My party was expecting a quiet, lovely tea and the opportunity to visit with each other and to be given a tour of the home after the tea. Unfortunately, we were frequently interruped with historical commentary. This would have been fine AFTER the meal but was unexpected and unwelcomed during the meal. If this approach can be corrected, we may return. It is a lovely place.

The first time I went to this tea house I took my family that came in from Miami Florida. Needless to say they pretty much have seen it all. So I wanted to take them somewhere different and a co-worker suggested I take them to the De' tour house in Elizabeth city. Setting up the appointment was very easy and the price was very affordable. I was not sure what to expect, but to my surprise the hostess was very engaging, well informed and extremely attentive. Every thing was done very tastefully. We had such a wonderful experience that I have made this tea house one of my own personal favorite places to go to here in Elizabeth city. I also booked a tea for the ladies in church and we had the best time taking photos and trying on hats. The hostess was delightful, the food gave a sense of European delight just perfect with whatever tea you choose. The house and ambiance is elegant just a great place to take family and friends on an event that is different. I'm looking forward to my next tea time with friends. It's a great place. Definitely 2 thumbs up!

Bonnie is a wonderful hostess. We called her at the last minute to see if she could provide a tea for a friend's surprise birthday. It was wonderful! She gave us a tour of the house and her knowledge of antiques and history is amazing. The food was especially good and served on her family's hand painted china. I would highly recommend this tearoom.

After a walk in below freezing temperatures 9 of us were ready for the warmth and comfort of De'Tours Tea House on a January Saturday. Our hostess was welcoming and entertaining. The teas were plentiful and tasty, some robust, others delicate. With the teas we were served delectable tea sndwiches and sweet treats, our hostess's own creations. Warmed by the tea, and our appetites well-satisfied, we were treated to a tour of the fabulous old house and its contents which included a magnificent Victorian era pump organ. We're planning another visit in the not-too-distant future.

What a terrific way to warm up after completing a 10k (6.2mi) Volksmarch Walk in below 30 temperatures! From the time I called to schedule the tea until she hugged me goodbye, Bonnie Hanbury-Calliotte made me feel like a friend, not just a paying customer. From start to finish, the whole experience was terrific -- tasty, homemade food; a flavorful selection of teas; and a congenial, knowledgeable hostess -- not to mention the beautiful venue. It's obvious Bonnie has put a lot of time and effort into researching and perfecting her 'craft.' When I come back, I'll make sure the weather is warmer so I can get in the historic homes tour.

The hostess was out of town when I called, last minute, to try to book a walking tour of historic Elizabeth City. When she returned my call, she spent over 20 minutes giving me instructions & directions to do my own tour of the town! The info was great!! (By the way - the Vistors' Center is closed on weekends, so I couldn't get info from there.) I took copious notes as she went into detail about the buildings, people & history of the town. My husband & I were on bicycles, so we were able to just about 'see it all' & with her help, we totally knew all the ins & outs of that tour. She has to be a perfectly delightful person to have spent so much time with me (free) & I hate we did not get to meet her. I thank her so much - that saved our one day trip to EC! Without her info, we would have only gotten a little from a town that's loaded with beauty & history! Thanks again so VERY much!!

PS this website wouldn't take my review without rating the tea. We did not get to have tea, of course, but to get my review published, I chose 'excellent' for all Q's about the tea since I am certain this lady (so sorry I forgot her name!!) does a beautiful tea!

Fantastic, what an experience, I have had tea at most of the Tea establishments shown on Tea Map in the greater Hampton Roads area and this place stands alone, it's no wonder they were voted one of the top ten tearooms in the US. This place is exceptional. On arrival our names were on a welcome sign outside, from the minute we entered we were warmly welcomed and treated like royalty. We were introduced to teas we would never dream of having. Our scones were light, and the devonshire cream to die for. The food is exceptionally fresh with beautiful presentation including fresh flowers. The service is professional and friendly and decorated beautifully for the holidays, you can tell the owner loves doing what she does. This is a first class act which other Tea Houses don't even come close to, you arrive as customers and leave as friends, a rare gift in today's world. Make reservations as she can get busy! Thank you De'Tours for an absolutely delightful afternoon spent in your little slice of heaven.

When my family visited us in August 2009, I wanted to treat them to something special that would give them a little flavor of the history of Elizabeth City. I saw De'Tours online and decided to give it a try. Being new to the Hertford, NC area, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was hopeful it would be a pleasant experience for all the different age groups--teens through senior citizens. When Bonnie greeted us, she made us feel like we were long-time friends stopping by for a visit. As you walk into her home, you feel as if you are transformed back in time. Stepping into the dining room, you will be impressed by the beautifully-set table--many of the pieces inherited from Bonnie's family. Once seated and given a little history, the goodies arrive on beautifully- displayed trays. All are freshly made, unique, and delicious! Just a note--our teens like many others--are picky eaters. Recognizing that, Bonnie gratiously offered to make special peanut butter sandwiches just for them, which she cut into pretty rounds. All were happy. After the tea, you will have a tour and history lesson. Enjoy!

We had a wonderful experience here in Elizabeth City with our tour of the historic district and ending with a full British tea in what is the oldest brick home in the district. The owner sure knows how to prepare real British fare, with tea sandwiches, scones made from scratch and to top it off dipped chocolate strawberries and tarts for dessert. Lots of food and you won't leave hungry. The presentation was fantastic, and the antiques in the home are something to see. She shared with us how the Victorians lived and had tea time. We listened to music boxes from the late 1800's and a tune on the 1840 pump organ.

My 4-year old daughter hosted a Teddy Bear tea for 7 of her friends for Christmas. The children loved the sandwiches shaped liked teddy bears, the delicious homemade cookies, and dressing in their fanciest dresses. As a parent I appreciated the patience Bonnie took to show the children proper etiquette at the table.
