I have been going to Frills since the late 80's and I still love it. The food and tea have always been good and the desserts are to die for (even better now with the new ownership). Not sure why this place gets such negative reviews. The service has never been horrible. I do notice the servers are young, but never rude just a bit inexperience. Never had a problem with reservations either. Maybe it's the counter clerks who are giving this place a bad image. Can't say I've dealt them, but I would bring it to the owners attention then if I had a bad experience.
I will continue to go back to Frills for the delicious food and tea.

Frills has wonderful, delicious fresh fruit and creme fraiche-covered scones, and very good tea in adorable teacups. Having said that, the service is a little ridiculous. It is located in a small town, and I'd expect them to welcome walk-ins when we're clearly the only customers there. Every time I go in, they act as if it's such an inconvenience to seat my friends and I, and we 'really should have made reservations.' I always want to ask, 'Are you kidding me?! Nobody else is even here!' When they reluctantly seat us, the waitress goes over the menu like a script, slowly and deliberately, and if you ask a question in the middle of her monologue, she's not happy. The front half of the store is cluttered with strange mannequins and random doodles, and the wallpaper is peeling off where the retail part meets the tea room. Atmosphere- eh. But I will return many times for the scones.

It has been a while since I wrote the last review and want to update based on Frill's new menu. The food continues to be a great treat at Frills that can only be surpassed and matched by a couple of other tea houses in Southern California (Barbara's Tea House in Rancho Cucamonga & Elises in Long Beach). The best thing is the fact that you can order an a la carte sandwich plate and get a second round of those delicious creations. The physical ambience continues to be surprisingly delightful for a tea house that is in a main shopping area as opposed to a house. The only issue I still have is with the poor, snooty, and sometimes immature service. Two counter clerks, are they in in high school??, bring the only all black attire to the frilly victorian setting. Then you have the constant snoot... (more)iness when trying to get a reservation even 48 hrs. in advance, only to find the place empty when you visit. Other tea houses do use the same tables a number of times in a day. The only explanation I can fathom for why we are surrounded by empty tables is that once a table is used, it is not used again. Whatever the reason, they do give a hard time when trying to get in there. Finally, there is no service cheer here. Ending on a good note, the tea list is unmatched. You simply cannot find the variety of teas offered at Frills anywhere else. This with the great food make it a worthwhile visit.
