Welcome to The Governor Croswell Tea Room at 125 E. Maumee in historic downtown Adrian, Michigan. The tea room restaurant is located next to the 3rd oldest continuosly running theater in the United States, the beautiful Croswell Opera House. The tea room has an outstanding location on the main floor of the beautiful 103 year old Beaux- Arts architectural style Hoefler Building. The tea room is named in honor of the former Adrian resident, Charles M. Croswell, who was the 17th Governor of the State of Michigan from 1877-1881. We offer a "china and linen" tea experience while serving British inspired food. “The Governor Croswell High Tea” will be served daily along with many other menu offerings. The tea room also provides a charming, memorable place to host bridal showers, baby showers, anniversary parties, birthday parties, pre - theater meals, after - theater desserts and many other special events. Memories made in our tea room will continue tp connect generations. This is why we are very happy to share our “special place” with you, your friends and your family. Come and experience the Governor Croswell Tea Room soon. Phyllis and Al Wilkerson Owners

As life does, bad days happen. And, in my family, going out on a girls day to The Tea Room always lifts our spirits. It has never failed us yet. I love the food, the laid back elegant atmosphere, mismatched tea service. Actually, if I was just a bit more courageous, there are some tea cups and pots I would love to take home. Instead, we just visit them. That way, everyone is happy.

Five stars all the way! Excellent food, supurb tea, awesome experience, and even better service! Our server was Chase - who I also rate 5 stars! He went above amd beyond. The experience was so memorable. Shared each teapot and dish with our whole party. Everyone was so impressed. Worth every penny (surprisingly affordable!) We each live out of state. They're going to ship our next tea orders to us! I will definitely return whenever I can!

One of very favorite places anywhere! Delicious food, BEAUTIFUL tea -- whole leaf -- and a wide variety. My husband's favorite is the house tea (cinnamon orange spice) and he always has a bag at home to enjoy as well. We make a point of bringing our out-of-town friends to the tearoom and we've been told by everyone that it is one of the best tearooms they have ever been to. This includes a dear friend who is a world traveler and has spent a lot of time in London.

Love, love, love this place. Food is excellent. I've had it all. Quiche is amazing along with butternut squash soup, cream of asparagus soup and of course the desserts, all of them. It's my grandsons favorite place because of the red pepper soup.

Life just seems better when one enters the doors of the lovely Governor Croswell Tea Room. The beautiful decor and the pleasant non-intrusive music create a perfect setting for a delicious meal with friends. The teas offerings are smooth and full of flavor, the way tea is meant to be. One feels transported back to a more gentle and refined time and who does not need that?!

Not only is this a rare gem to look at in Adrian but has fantastic, quick service and very friendly staff. The owners are bursting with knowledge and history of the place and Adrian. Really reminiscent of England's own cute and quaint Tearooms.

My grandmother, mother, sister, and I love going to new tea rooms and the Governor Croswell Tea Room and Restaurant was one of the best! It was beautiful, elegant, and comfortable. The Shepherd's Pie was delicious and the tea flavor that I chose (Cherry Amaretto) was the table's favorite. Our waitress was wonderful and obliging, very mature for a high school age young lady. It was my grandma's birthday and the wait staff sang one of the best renditions of "happy birthday" we've ever heard, and my family is picky! (We're all musicians!) The owners, Al and Phyllis Wilkerson, were so sweet and checked in with us. They are retired teachers from Romulus and were coaches and teachers to my mom and her siblings. Once they discovered the connection, they had some even lovelier conversation with us and Al gave us a little tour of the tea room and the exterior of the buildings on the historic street where they are located. A truly enjoyable experience. I am sure we will be returning in the future!

We have been enjoying the food here since they opened! The atmosphere is very relaxing and the place is decorated beautifully. The owners are always so friendly and go out of their way to make us feel welcome! Everything on the menu is reasonably priced and very flavorful! My girls love to get dressed up and go here for a fancy lunch. They especially love that their drink is served in a personal tea pot. Whether it's for a casual lunch or for a special event this is my family's choice! We are very proud to have this wonderful establishment in our community. When you go, you will definitely not leave disappointed!

Outstanding, exquisite cuisine graciously served in a delightful, relaxing atmosphere. Amazing variety of food and teas. A truly memorable experience, which I hope to repeat often! I am Canadian-born, and I love my tea! I was happy to see my 3 favourites, English and Irish Breakfast, and Darjeeling, on the menu. I honestly think this is the best restaurant I've ever eaten in and certainly the best of the 3 tea rooms I've experienced. Thank you!

I was taken by my sister, Marian, for a birthday tea at this establishment this past June. It was outstanding. It is located in a 125 year old building in quaint Adrian. We had a special window seat reserved for us to celebrate my birthday. The food was outstanding and the individual pots of tea were delicious. The gorgeous chandlers and sconces from the Dearborn Inn were beautiful. This tea room reeks of elegance and is decorated in warm colors and antiques. We will return again, I coming in from AZ will make it an annual stop on my visit to Michigan. The hostess was a class act herself and the owners sound like fantastic people. Shall I pour?

I was hoping for a memorable tearoom experience; and from the moment I walked in the door, I was immersed in history and beauty. I was equally as happy with the tea and the food. My seat offered an enchanting view of the beautiful interior as the afternoon sun caused light and shadows to bring added dimension to the upper portion of the room. Everything was grand! I admit I am a wee bit jealous that other reviews mention an impromptu seranade (but I look forward to that on my next visit or the visit after that). But, the hospitality of Al and Phyllis and their willingness to share their love of history and and their city with my little family group warmed my heart (just as it has so many others who frequent Governor Croswell's). The owners and their staff make everyone feel like honored visitors they have been longing to see. Thank you very much.

My mom, daughter and I just visited this wonderful tearoom. It has a very historic feel and the food is delicious. We all had high tea and enjoyed every minute of our time there. The staff was very pleasant and we were blessed to meet the owners and were able to spend quite a bit of time talking to them. I would highly recommend this tea room to anyone in the area or even just passing through. It is a charming establishment and well worth a visit.

Five of us came to Adrian to celebrate our friend's birthday. This was the first time any of us had been to The Governor Croswell Tea Room. It was a lovely atmosphere, the food was delicious and the service, impeccable. Mr. Wilkerson the owner, stopped by to chat and give us the history of the area and also a tour of the Opera House next door. It couldn't have been a nicer experience. Given that my friend the birthday girl is an author who writes children's books and personal and town histories, Mr. Wilkerson's information was the icing on the cake. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon. The Ladies from Dexter.

My husband and were lucky enough to enjoy lunch at Governor Croswell's last week. Neither of us had never been to a tea room and didn't quite know what to expect. Here are my observations: Obviously a great deal of care and reasearch has been done by the owners to present a genuine experience at this facility. The restaurant itself is beautifully appointed with great care given to the details. The food was superb. We both picked a selection from one of the four quiche offerings that day and to say they literally melted in our mouth would not adequately describe how delicious they were. The soups and the cheddar muffins that accompanied our quiches were perfect accents to the quiche and very well seasoned and prepared. I am a stickler about food temperature when presented and I was delighted that my food was served hot - a simple necessity that seem to present a challenge to many restaurants. The wait staff was one of the best we've had. They knew their products (both tea and menu items)as though they had prepared them and could describe them thoroughly and accurately and make confident recommendations based on our questions and preferances. Not only were they a very knowledgeable waitstaff, they were also were very talented singers and we were treated to three songs. We would make the hour and 1/2 return trip to this tea room in a heartbeat. The food, the ambience and the waitstaff make a trip to this tea room a must. The owners, Al and Phyllis are gracious hosts who obviously care great deal about the dining experience their customers receive.

With any review, it's important to know a thing or two about the reviewer. Therefore, I'll offer a few crumbs about myself before explaining how I discovered the crown jewel of South Eastern Michigan, Governor Croswell Tea Room & Restaurant:

      1. I love tea. I've been drinking it as long as I can remember. From white to oolong, lemon balm to longjing, I LOVE tea.

      2. I am a native Canadian and currently live in Toronto, Ontario. The restaurants in Toronto are world class. I am 27 years old and am in my last year of law school.

      3. I am a foodie in every sense of the word. I enjoy both new tastes and old. Spoiled by excellent cooking as a child, I know my way around a kitchen and have developed an appreciation for quality ingredients, innovative technique, and good hospitality.

      4. I was in the area on a lark—on a road trip with friends to see the sights at Irish Hills.

Now that you know a little bit about me, I will say, with confidence, that stumbling upon the Governor Croswell Tea Room was worth the entire 6 hour drive from Toronto. It is, most certainly, a tea room like no other.

The room is decorated in a High British style and located in an historic building in the heart of downtown Adrian. Upon crossing the threshold, my friends and I were greeted by the proprietor,

Al Wilkerson, who, instead of pointedly asking whether or not we’d like a seat, graciously inquired as to whether we’d like to stay and warm ourselves until the rain subsided—a pleasant start to a memorable afternoon.

We took a table against the Western wall and were promptly waited upon by a courteous, charming, and neatly dressed server. I ordered a personal pot of Blackcurrant tea and a miniature lemon square.

Shortly after visiting the spotless and handsomely decorated men’s room, I was presented with a steaming and marvellously hand-painted bone china pot. It was love at first drop.

The tea was lovely – warm and refreshing, with the sharp and characterful flavour of blackcurrant.

The lemon square, which arrived at exactly the right time, was delicious. It was not quite as good as my mother’s, but I’ll admit some bias in the matter.

What more, the hospitality at Governor Crowswell’s was without equal. That bears repeating. The hospitality at Governor Crowswell’s was without equal.

Al was warm-hearted and more than willing to share his vast knowledge of the area. The wait staff was attentive and very clearly hand-picked by Al. A highlight of the afternoon: the entire restaurant was treated to an impromptu and commanding a cappella performance from one of the tea house’s employees, a young vocal student who boasts a ringing tenor.

So please, do yourself a favour and visit Governor Croswell Tea Room. The combination of fine teas, delicate china, beautiful décor, and warm hospitality will leave thirsty for more.

We came in a party of four for our first visit, in conjunction with the 'Seven Brides' performance at the Croswell Opera House. As long-term attendees, we know that one can always get food in Adrian, just as there is entertainment. The Croswell OH represents entertainment at its finest, just as now the Tea Room represents the finest in dining. What a welcome addition to our theater evening... and right next door!

We were treated a small menu, one that was chock full of adventure. I wanted to order everything. Coming to a single choice was a difficult task. We look forward to trying other entrees in future visits.

Al was right there to make sure we had the best possible experience. He needn't have been concerned. the wait staff performed impeccably, even unto singing show tunes as we enjoyed our meal. It is possible to order tea in other restaurants in the area. However, to have the wide selection on hand and to be able to sip from Royal Doulton teacups makes the Governor Croswell experience measurably better. Long life and much success to this endeavor.
