My daughters, my granddaughter and I were on an antiquing trip in the area. We came in not expecting tea and a wonderful lunch followed by the tastiest cake I've eaten in years (I don't normally like cake). The hummingbird cake was delightful. The staff were courteous and personable. The bits and pieces on display both as antiques and for sale were fun to browse through. A nice break in the day...unrushed and peaceful. We plan to revisit this fall.

The lady who suggested that another reviewer didn't know what she was looking for, and should look for 'high tea' is misinformed. The first reviewer was expecting a traditional afternoon tea, which she was knowledgeable enough to know is not synonymous with lunch. High tea is not the elegant affair most Americans believe it to be, 'high' refers to the height of the table(high dining table vs. low tea table). High tea is a common British supper involving more substantial fare such as meats, while afternoon tea is the more elegant affair which the second reviewer mistakenly referred to as 'high tea'. It is disappointing to see several tearoom owners offering afternoon tea listed as 'high tea', or offering a lunch menu for 'afternoon tea', which just serves to perpetuate this misconception.

We went to the Hummingbird on a clear, bright day after several dreary days of cold rain. How cheerful it was to come into the Tearoom! The windows were tall, narrow and covered in lace and the sun poured into the main room. Every table sparkled with bright glass and polished silver. We had our choice of 3 delicious soups and several salads. I chose the 'special' salad, which is a tasty german style slaw made with red cabbage, apples & other crunchy ingredients. Of course there was the tearoom favorite, chicken salad, but pecans or grapes or both could be added before it was served generously on a large croissant. Not only was pulled BBQ pork offered that day, but my companions tried the broiled tilapia; neither being standard tearoom fare. We had to finish with slices of hummingbird cake.... (more)..which is hard to find! If you haven't had it, hummingbird cake is similar to carrot cake, in that it is dense and moist and iced with cream cheese icing. However, instead of carrots, hummingbird cake is made with bananas, pineapple and cinnamon. It is delicious! Each diner had a small, individual, pretty tea pot with a choice of tea. One diner had chocolate milk, which was presented in the same way. All of the varied patterned silverware was old, gently loved, and beautifully polished. The lunch was served on lovely glass luncheon plates with a punch cup....our soup was in the punch cup. Our hostess was gracious and knowledgable. We did not have a 'high tea', which in my experience is too much sweet and not enough sandwich. This was a healthy, filling lunch with lots of veggies and fruit and not too much oil and mayo. It was perfect. Of course we had to head upstairs where I found a vintage cookbook and a beautiful blue pressed glass dish. A lunch stop at the Hummingbird would be a delightful day tour when coupled with a stop at Hunter's Honey Farms outside Martinsville (1-765-537-9430), Willowfield Lavender Farm outside Mooresville (1-317-831-7980) and of course a stop just before leaving downtown, The Martinsville Candy Kitchen (1-765-342-7390). The Tearoom is a perfect place to bring company from out of town; for the ladies of Hummingbird Heaven truly have the gift of hospitality. You will enjoy your trip. Oh!....and I forgot to mention it is a very reasonable price as well!

Bridal SHOWER FUN! We hosted a bridal shower at the Hummingbird Heaven Tearoom in October. The setting was wonderful. Everyone 'shopped' at the antique / tearoom gift shop areas before lunch. The age of the attendees ranged from bridal party (mid-20's to elderly family members.) The young ladies had fun going through the old cells joking with the bride about her last days of 'freedom'. Some even purchased a few items after the event to remember the day..Tina made sure we had privacy during our luncheon and limited the # of reservations while the event was taking place. she gave a short history of the building and answered all our questions. The Staff was fantastic, polite, and service was excellent. Food was wonderful and atmosphere was perfect for a bridal shower. great background music and lots of special 'trinkets' to enjoy for the young and old. Thank you, Tina and staff, for making it such a memorable experience.

Great hostess! Interesting place even a bit spooky. The food was interesting very good, but not what I typically think of as tea food. Worth it for the service!

The food was wonderful. We had the soup of the day, homemade vegetable soup, Inmates roast beef, and a slice of the Hummingbird Cake. (which was pure heaven) It was a very relaxing expierence for our day out. I plan on returning with my mom again soon.

Very enjoyable experience. For the lady looking for 'tea' and didn't get the experience she wanted she needs to look for 'high tea' listed. She apparently didn't know what she was looking for so missed the entire experience here. Our group liked it a lot.

I took my mother and daughter for lunch and had a great time. Despite tea rooms not usually being 'kid friendly' we had a great visit with my 2 year old. The food was great and just the perfect amount and glad we had room for dessert too! We plan on returning again and enjoying more of downtown Martinsville.

This is a pleasant enough place for lunch, but is not accurately described as a tearoom, in my opinion. While I know some tearooms serve both lunch and 'afternoon tea', the only food options would be considered lunch, not 'tea' foods. Tea was served either iced, or hot tea from tea bags. I made a reservation for 'tea', and was never corrected in my impression of what that meant. The owner was very nice and friendly, but admitted that the food had not been made fresh that day. It didn't matter with everything that was served, but some things definitely tasted 'old.' I was very disappointed, I had invited my cousin to join me for afternoon tea, she had never been to a tearoom before, and I had to let her know that she still had NOT been to a tearoom! (To be fair, my sister and cousin, who had not been to tearooms before, still enjoyed lunch here.)
