Clare & I have been regulars at this lovely tea room since it opened. The ambience is great and you are seated in a sft chair with English bone china table settings. Lunches include Cottage Pie (the best we have ever eaten), Sausage Rolls, Cornish Pasties, Welsh Rarebit, Ploughman's Lunch, etc. Megan's gourmet soups are fabulous and made fresh daily as are all foods including the baking. Afternoon teas are great with a perfectly steeped pot of tea (we drink Typhoo a strong, black English tea thats been around for centuries, very smooth), a choice of fresh baked scones, a great selection of finger sandwiches, and assorted yummy desserts. Shelley (the owner) does most of the cookin g and baking. She recently had a great Christmas Tea complete with Christmas crackers. We went three tim... (more)

I love this little gem of a tea shop! You can really taste the time and quality that goes in to their dishes. And the soups! I'm always exited to see what the daily HOMEMADE selection will be. If you're in the area, even if you're not, make it a point to stop in for a lovely meal.

This is the second time I have been to Penelope's and it was again a wonderful experience! The tearoom and decor are cozy and inviting and the server was an absolute doll! My 2 companions and I all had the Elegant Afternoon Tea (I hope I got that name right) which was very tasty and the Chai tea I ordered was so good I bought some to take home with me. I am looking forward to my next visit to Penelope's because I know I'll definitely go back!

I first stumbled upon Penelope's Tea Room four years ago. Ever since, anytime I'm in town, I make it a point to take time to enjoy the Elegant Afternoon Tea.

The owners and staff are a wonderful group of people and combine the pleasant, yet rare quality of attentive friendliness without the overbearing obnoxiousness found in some establishments. I am able to sit quitely in one of the comfy chairs with my latest literary selection as I sip my perfectly brewed tea of choice or gab with a group of friends over the latest delectable dessert (the Ninimo bars are rich, chocolaty and little slices of joy which I try to share with those individuals who have not yet set foot in the shop - a to-go box is a must).

Not only am I able to enjoy both the traditional and well known... (more)

We drove out of our way while on vacation to try Penelope's and were delighted by this jewel.
We picked up locally mixed teas that incorporate the local flower for which Lompoc is so well known.
The tiny sandwiches were tasty and hit the spot.
We had a wonderful, relaxing time.

Penelope's is my favorite place in town. I truly enjoy having my sunday afternoon pot of Crime of Passion along with the chef's wonderful fresh soups and scones. Since there are so many teas to experience, I know I can look forward to many more delightful days sipping them all.

I went to Penelopes for the first time with a group of friends for a wedding shower. It was fantastic! The food was great, the people were all so nice and the atmosphere was like going back in time. I am looking forward to returning. I purchased a tea pot and two loose teas to have at home, one is called crime of passion and the other is called wedding. I had the one called wedding (or is it called marriage?) and it was wonderful!

Rene,
I am so glad that your first experience created such wonderful memories for you. that is what we strive to do. The one tea you enjoyed is called the Wedding Tea and of course is very popular this time of year especially. I hope you are enjoying the new Tea pot. Do stop by soon!

My wife just loves tea and we both just love Penelope's. We live in Santa Barbara and come up each month for tea made the way it should be made(whole leaf, brewed perfectly, and kept hot with colorful cozies). The soups are all really quite outstanding, the scones are delightful and the service is exceptional. There is nothing we would change about the place; it's such a relaxing experience -like being at home (except nicer!). We were wondering what would happen with the new ownership but the tradion started by Penelope for excellence and comfort has only improved.

James and Christine,
Thank you for taking the time to give our shop such praise. It certainly lifted my spirits to hear your approval, especially since you are 'old timers' to the shop.

My daughters and I enjoy Penelope's so much! I also have enjoyed tea there with friends for birthdays, baby showers, or just relaxing together. Now my teenage daughter brings her friend and they try to plan occasional visits there together. They can't get enough of the scones and come home and try to find recipes to make scones 'like they make at Penelope's.' You could say it's 'addicting.' I enjoy Early Grey especially but have also tried the Mother's Bouquet and it was lovely. I believe they make their tea the good old fashioned way, with loose leaf teas which you can also purchase to make at home. The atmosphere is lovely and very relaxing. I've enjoyed the lacy table dining experience and also the 'fireside' easy chair lounging. I love the way they let you pick where you want to sit. From reading other reviews I can see that it's time to bring my husband!

I love Penelope's,there is no tea house on the central coast.Thank
goodness for this one.Lovely staff, cozy & you just don't want to leave. The smell of Scones baking is wonderful perfume when you walk in. Penelope is a very gracious hostess, we lived in the Mesa Oaks section of Lompoc, but now live in Santa Maria, we will be going to the tea house for Mothers Day. Men, don't feel intimidated, my husband loves this place & the food. Dorothy& Bob Vusich, Santa Maria,Ca. 04/5/2008

My wife and I visit Penelope's often. The service is always good as is the tea and food. We had their St Patrick's Tea with Paris (iced). Full of flavor and we had to take home a box! Always a treat!

Penelope's Teas & Gifts is an exceptional tea room. After years of scouring Southern California for the perfect tea room, we were delighted to find this gem in our own back yard. Tucked away in the charming little town of Lompoc, Penelope's has a well deserved reputation for good food and good service. Once you've experienced it for yourself, you'll understand why. From the moment you walk in you're greeted by friendly staff, the intoxicating aroma of baking scones and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. Whether you opt for one of their traditional afternoon teas (which we can never resist), or sample heartier fare including wonderful soups, sandwiches and salads, you will not be disappointed. There is something for everyone at Penelope's, so don't be afraid to take the men in your life ... (more)

Tom and Sherry,
Thank you so much for your kind and supportive words. It has been such a joy to offer a place of retreat to all those who come through our doors. We certainly do not do fussy unless it is with our scones and the rest of the fare we offer at Penelope's!

One of the best tea houses I know of! Excellent service, a nice airy atmosphere, and, of course, great tea. The Flower Valley Blend is particularly addicting-- I’m not usually fond of fruit infused tea, but this is an exceptional blend. My friends and I left content and wishing we didn’t live 200 miles away from this gem of a tea house!
- Kat 02/08/08

Tearoom Response
Kat,
I really enjoy Flower Valley Blend. I am sorry to hear you are 200 miles away as we have recently received some delightful new teas- including a wonderful new green tea called Crime of Passion! Stop by when you can.

As a guy, I was a little timid to go in to a tea room. But I'm a complete convert for Penelope's! They really do have 'guy food'. The cottage pie was very good and filling. The best scones I've ever had! These are the real thing, not those disgusting buscuit-like scones from a evil coffee empire. If the tea list seems intimidating, ask your server. They are very knowledgable and full of suggestions.

The atmosphere is great too. Yes, it's a tea room so the decor is 'flowery' but it's not intimidating. The 2 servers are friendly and helpful. The owner is a delightful lady who you can tell really has a passion for this tea room.

I am always thrilled when a person- (male or female) walks through our tea room door and finds that their fears are relieved and they feel welcome! We do have very good food that should satisfy even very hungry souls. Our scones are made with love each day and you really should try our soups. They are fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to give us a review and please come and enjoy tea again.

My husband and I absolutely love going to Penelope's for lunch/tea & scones/dessert...just about everything! With over sixty types of loose-leaf teas, there is something for everyone. The atmosphere is exactly what you would expect a cozy tea house to be - dimmed lights, some tables with wingback chairs, soft music. The food is wonderful and made right in the kitchen there, even their amazing soups. My husband was concerned that lunch at a tea room woldn't be filling, but he was pleasantly surprised. We now love going there to spend a relaxing afternoon and have good conversations over tea. They recently went through a change of ownership, but you wouldn't know. I even thing it's better than it used to be, and it was still great then. If you are in Lompoc, you must make it a point to visit Penelope's. We believe it is the best tea room on the Central Coast.
