I visited the other day and there was a lovely selection of teas, but the food and service were uninspiring. Perhaps the heat had something to do with it.

Visited during a halloween trip to sleepy hollow. The selection was good, the atmosphere was clean and crisp, not stuffy. The food and food selection was good, and service while good, was nothing overly welcoming.

My wife and I just went to SiverTips in early November and really enjoyed ourselves. Our server really went out of her way to explain the menu in detail...and there is quite a bit of detail to the menu. After studying we settled in on a variety of green tea which was excellent even by my wife's high Japanese standards. Our meals were also superb (I had a samosa which was a nice compliment to the tea on a brisk morning). I would certainly recommend SilverTips to all tea lovers.

Thanks, Joel! We get the samosas made at an Indian kitchen in Queens, NY and then delivered fresh to us so they're authentic and excellent! Glad you liked them as well as the tea and your visit. Come back again! - anupa

What a horrible medium the internet has become when it shields behind a mask of anonymity those who would make irrational complaints! I note that of the SilverTips reviews on this site every negative review is anonymous, while the positive remarks of Joseph Salvo, Joseph Costa, Nate Levin, and, now, Michael Perna, are owned by their speakers. For this alone the negative reviews should be disregarded; for me they are certainly suspect. But the most important reason for disregarding the negative reviews: they are simply untrue.
On my last visit to SilverTips I started a bowl of the soup . . . and would have had another, but for the fact that I knew I wanted to try 2 different pots of tea. The soup was rich in vegetables, fresh and appetizing. With the soup I enjoyed a pot of Ricksh... (more)aw Oolong: Perfectly prepared, a rich bouquet, and flavor that I lack the ability to put into words. Later, I enjoyed a pot of Rohini Estate (as perfect as the Oolong) along with 2 different scones and a peach cobbler. The foods were visually appealing and tasteful: the scones were the lightest I’ve ever had; the cobbler, fruity but not overly sweet -- Perfect!
The nearly overwhelming selection of tea offerings forced me to sit awhile before making my selections. Fortunately, the Tea Catalogue provides informative descriptions of the teas (I purchased the catalogue so that I might learn more). I also purchased a bag of Pomegranate Organic tea and have enjoyed it at home many times in the teapot I also purchased at SilverTips! (While their selection of tea hardware may be limited by their size, the prices are very favorable compared to larger chain-stores and tea websites I’ve visited).
One reviewer notes that judging tea is subjective. I might add that the tea offerings at SilverTips are seductive as well. SilverTips invites you to partake in the fruits of a pleasant forgotten garden. However, if you are looking for a quiet respite, you may want to purchase your tea from SilverTips’ unbelievable selection and head home. The entire time I was in SilverTips the place was packed to overflow with half as many people waiting as were seated (of course, it was mid-day on a beautiful autumn weekend!) Yet, the atmosphere, while busy, remained pleasant and comfortable. I know that I had the staff’s complete attention throughout my visit and this contributed to my very positive experience at SilverTips.
One last comment about the other reviews on this site: TeaMap.com asks for your name when you submit a review; anonymous reviews should not be permitted! Only reviews that are owned by a verifiable speaker should be permitted. I urge TeaMap.com to purge all anonymous reviews - negative and positive. Here, none of the negative reviews can be attributed to anyone, so no one can be held accountable. Consider this my review of TeaMap.com - I am less than impressed with your way of doing business. In fact, after carefully reviewing the reviews, I personally suspect that someone is deliberately trying to interfere with SilverTips’ business. Having visited SilverTips, I know enough to simply ignore the negative reviews because I know them to be untrue, but were I the owner of SilverTips I would speak to my attorney about pursuing a claim of tortious interference with business! Curiously, I note that of the several Westchester tea rooms reviewed on this site only Kathleen’s received a couple of negative comments - and one of them is (ostensibly) by the same author of a SilverTips review: “jackie” reviewed both Kathleen’s and SilverTips on 6/1/07. Does anyone else find this a bit strange? Makes you wonder if the negative reviews have their genesis in a disgruntled former employee or job applicant, or perhaps someone else of nefarious intent. Barring anonymous reviews would solve this problem. But, in the meantime . . . .
Get offline and visit SilverTips - you will not be disappointed!

Michael,
First, thank you for a detailed review of who we are and what we represent. Second, I agree - negative reviews posted anonymously allow us no opportunity to change or satisfy the customer.
Finally - Thanks for enjoying our food, our teas and our atmosphere. We love what we do, enjoy a full house while still making every visit memorble for each customer. Come and say a personal hello the next time you are there.

While it is true that the ritual and sensory experience surrounding tea is inherently subjective, I am frankly bewildered by some of the comments that have been made on this site about Silvertips. My wife and I have had afternoon tea in a whole range of settings over the years and have found two tests that make or break the experience of afternoon tea.
The first involves the selection and quality of tea offerings, and their proper preparation. Time and time again, we are amazed at the freshness and breadth of the tea selections at Silvertips. Whether it is the depth and power of their classic Makaibari Estate Assam, the fragrance of their Baroness Earl Grey, the depth of their Organic Rooibos, or the chocolate and fruity aroma of their Prelude to Bliss, there is something for ev... (more)eryone in this tea room. Moreover, I often catch myself starring in amazement as the staff navigates the maze of clock timers used to brew the tea in precise fashion.
The second involves the service and quality of the environment that the staff creates, a measure of their ability to build “chemistry” with a whole range of customers from tea novices to tea aficionados. Here, the litmus test is whether the staff is able to provide excellent service that makes customers feel welcomed and comfortable. My wife and I find ourselves returning time and time again because the staff is so dedicated to their customers. They do their best to deliver a quality experience each time, and the choice of the word “experience” is intentional here. When we go to Silvertips, we are looking for an experience that uses tea to “feed” the spirit, something which the staff really understands. (I often wonder what the hiring experience must be like here, since this is a real demanding task!)
The menu selections at Silvertips are amazingly varied and of high quality. The soups are first-rate, using a host of ingredients and mix of flavors worthy of that proud institution up the river in Hyde Park. We like the olive spread sandwiches, although admittedly this may be an acquired taste for non-olive lovers. Finally, the scones are to die for.
The only thing I can think of that may have turned-off some visitors to Silvertips is the fact that it does get crowded at times, with people waiting in line for tables to open up. Since this can add pressure to what should be a calm tea ritual, I suggest you visit early in the afternoon.

I would have to disagree with Mr. Costa and agree with several of the other recent reviews. While the tea selection is superb, the tea room itself is rather lacking of warmth and the food and staff could use serious improvement. I made a visit here recently and was virtually ignored by the staff and was served a rather bland meal. Perhaps with all of the recent poor reviews the management is taking a good look at things overall. I shall make a return visit in the future to see if things have improved.

Dear Nancy,
We are now utterly perplexed! Bland food? Being ignored by our staff? It is very difficult to make changes without understanding the specific nature of your complaint. We are busier than we have ever been, all our feedback surveys are positive, our customers are heaping praise on us, we have standing room only on our busiest days and yet we continue to receive these odd reviews on a public website anonymously without any opportunity to make amends or counter your complaints. We take your feedback seriously but unless I hear back personally from you (or any other customer who has posted negative reviews), it is difficult to understand or make changes.

A delightful place of refreshment in season and out. Good food including homemade soups, excellent tea selection, and good deserts add up to a delightful lunch. The trained staff know how to do it and they do!

I first visited Silver Tips in July 2007, after have gone to 'tea' in Savannah, GA for the first time. I was disappointed. 1) Presentation, I was expecting something more elaborate, especially for the price. 2) The price - their in-house menu suggest that the afternon tea is for two - other than the offering of a second pot of tea - It clearly was not. I was not please. One scone & One tart or slice of cake. The offering/selection could/should be better.
I did go back with two others just theis week. The staff was friendlier and more attentive this time around, but the menu wasn't better. They do not offer any children friendly selections nor are they willing to subsitute e.i. plain turkey sandwhich

The variety of tea was impressive but that's about all that impressed us. The sandwiches were not very good or fresh. Dessert was not anything to write home about and again below average. The worst part of the experience was the bad scones. They were the worst scones we've ever tasted. How can one serve bad scones for afternoon tea and survived so long? Perhaps it was a bad batch or people only went for the impressive tea list. I was expecting a cutter setting and was a bit disappointed with the plain tea pots and tea cups. The service was cold and slow. I wish there was something plesant about this place so I wouldn't feel like a fool dragging a friend to this place.

It seems we didn't satisfy you in any area whatsoever and I apologize if you felt our service was cold and slow. Perhaps our style of food, desserts and settings are not to your taste but I can guarantee that our food is fresh. Our scones get rave reviews and as recently as yesterday, one of our customers ordered them to be sent by air to Seattle! We survey our customers often and have not received any feedback similar to your review. Still, our aim is to make every visit a treat and I see we missed the mark with you. Please e-mail me at anupa@silvertipstea.com and I will certainly try to make amends.

I had visited the tea room about a year ago and was very disappointed when I returned this past weekend. It seems that much of the staff has changed as well as the quality of the food. Not sure if I'll return for another visit.
