My husband and I have been attending the English Butler for two years now every Thursday for afternoon tea. We are very much in love with the atmosphere of the tearoom, the owners are welcoming and cheerful and the tea and food selection is wonderful. We enjoy our tea time at the English Butler so much we chose to celebrate my 30th birthday there last May. We had a most wonderful time and created a wonderful memory of a very special birthday. I remember we ordered the high tea selection which was fabulously delicious, containing delicious chocolate covered shortbread cookies, scones, cucumber sandwiches, and an assortment of conserves and of course clotted cream. I felt like a duchess.
The atmosphere of the tea room is casual however, the serving of the tea and food on china with prop... (more)er silverware makes one feel very special. Mind you the owners Alison and Chris always make you feel welcome whether it is your first time in the tea shoppe or your 100th time.
I highly recommend the English Butler for a spot of tea, wonderful food, and a welcoming atmosphere.

I stumbled across this little place the year it opened, in 2005. What a delight! My family and I visit the Vineyard every year at the same time, and we make this top of our list of places to visit.
It is lovely, peaceful and relaxing. The owners, Alison and Chris, always make us feel special. We come away feeling as though our holiday has begun!

With present day economics as they are in the USA, I doubt I'll be going to the UK any time soon, so I did the next best thing....I spent the afternoon in the warm and friendly surroundings of 'The ENGLISH BUTLER' Tea shop in Edgartown Massachusetts on Martha's Vineyard Island!
The pleasant and good humored proprieters, Alison and Chris David, are the congenial owners of this delightful place (part of the Nevin Square Shops on Winter Street in Edgartown). You will know you are 'there' when you spot the Jeeves look-alike mannequin on the steps.
Entering The ENGLISH BUTLER Tea Shop is like stepping back to Victorian times. A quick glance around this cozy shop, and one will see 4 tables set with the most lovely place settings of pink and deep red rose decorated china, intri... (more)cately folded floral napkins to match, and small silver spoons on white linen table clothes. Continue to look around the light filled room and you will notice shelves neatly displaying lovely china plates and such, painted in Delft blue and soft rose colored designs. One almost expects Jane Austen herself to stop by 'for a spot of tea' in these evocative surroundings.
Now take a seat, and forget about your watch for awhile, and enjoy this pleasant tea experience.
Though there are 8 or so apothacary jars of loose tea on view in, the menu features an even larger variety of aromatic and spicy teas. There are a number of excellent black and green teas, along with some soft fruit and floral decafs. I tend to like trying things I've never tasted before, and each of the teas I've enjoyed here in the past have been excellent.
An afternoon tea wouldn't be complete without something to nibble on while enjoying ones tea. The delicious fruit scones, served with a couple of scoops of clotted cream, and a small dish of lemon or raspberry curd are presented along with a couple of fresh strawberries, and a few small sweets to complete the experience. As this tea shop has been in business for the last 4 years, my husband has treated me to 'high tea'on special occassions. Included are small cream cheese and cherry sanwiches that were actually cut with a cookie cutter shaped like a tea pot! Cucmber tea sandwiches, scones, a number of various sweets, and 'biscuits',(those dainty cookies that melt in your mouth), are served on a stacked tray.
This is the perfect place for a small birthday party,or a place to spend time with a favorite aunt or grand mother (...and don't forget, Mother's Day is coming soon)!
The ENGLISH BUTLER Tea Shop also sells a number of things that one would expect to find in a fine British establishment such as this. Elegant tea cups, tea pots and tea cozies, delicate tea strainers in various designs, note cards with teacups (..and a tea bag!),small tea time cook books that feature the specialities of the 4 countries in the UK. Special boxes of cookies, unique tea caddies, and gift assortments are on hand as well.
Because of The ENGLISH BUTLER's small area, they do not have a suitably sized kitchen area, but Alison tells me she is working on a solution to this problem, and hopes to offer a larger variety of baked items in the future,
I hope this review will interest new comers and returning visitors alike, as it is the only tea shop on Martha's Vineyard....and what a treasure it is!
