I am a regular visitor to The Spiced Pear Tea Room. Today when I arrived I was excited to see that they are getting ready for Christmas at the tea room. A twelve foot real tree is in the front, and they were painting 4 foot tall candy canes to go around the garden fence. The menu had broadened since my last visit. Delicious! I enjoyed the Pumpkin Spice tea and had Beef Stroganoff for lunch. As usual...charming waiters, sweet smiling help. What a pleasure to have a place like this for ladies to lunch!

Attended a lovely brides luncheon yesterday at the Spiced Pear. Beautifully presented, upscale, gourmet quality food. Beautiful decor. Had a delightful time. Savored the Caio amaretto tea. You must add cream! Yum!

Had a delightful soirée today with seven friends at the Spiced Pear Tearoom. We get together every four months to 'catch up'. We always try to select a place to dine that will be new, different, or wonderful. We all agree that we don't need to look any further!
All our expectations were met or exceeded. We loved the way we were taken care of! We already have our reservation for four months out!!!!

I love tea rooms!!!! I particularly love this tearoom!!!!! The fruited chicken salad is unbeleivable!! The only problem I see here is they seem to get so slammed. Can popularity be a problem? It doesn't seem to affect the food quality or the ambiance. I'm glad I had a table reserved. I can see it may be a problem if you just 'show up' expecting to have your choice of seats, or a garden view! I will make this a regular place to visit!
The waiters are cute, the menu wonderful, and the decor darling!!

I can't believe the reviews I'm reading - this couldn't be the same place I was in today. I walked in at lunch with my parents and was greeted by a hateful looking woman who looked annoyed that I asked for a table. We would have gladly come back another day if she would have acted like she appreciated our business. I was humiliated that I kept insisting to my sweet parents that we should try this place. After the way we were treated I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Two adventurous friends, my 15 year old daughter and I recently drove 2 hours to try The Spiced Pear Tearoom after a disappointing tearoom visit near Atlanta. We were NOT disappointed there!
Marsha, our hostess extraordinaire, made our High Tea experience a delight, (along with the unnamed busy genius in the kitchen). What a satisfying, artistic meal we had in lovely surroundings. We can't wait to go back!

R. Dobbs here again: Oops, I forgot the delicious salad. It was truly outstanding, though it could have used a hint more of dressing. The various greens were ususually good and crisp.

I had the Queen’s Service on Friday, October 16, 2009, costing $23 or $24.

Scone (only one) -- Outstanding and hot from the oven, though I wish they’d had something other than chocolate chips in it that day.

Lemon curd (for the one scone, in a tiny container) -- Outstanding

Clotted cream (for the one scone, in a tiny container)-- Outstanding

Soup (small cup) -- Outstanding, of gourmet quality

Tea (two glasses of iced) -- Outstanding

Fruit (a few small slices) -- Good

Quiche (a small but adequate slice) -- Edible but too greasy. Obviously heated from previously frozen.

Savories -- A big disappointment. I had visions at the very least of tastier homemade versions of the beautiful frozen party savories at Costco and ... (more)

My daughter attended a pony party today at the Spiced Pear. Being eight, she has attended many birthday parties over the years. She has been to all the birthday venues in town at one time or another. She came home so completely excited and pleased I decided to write a comment. According to her, this was the Best party in the whole world!! When I asked her if she meant in Alabama or in America, she assured me she meant exactly what she said...The World, the Whole Wide World!!
She said she got to ride three horses, had fabulous food and had too much fun.

As a mother, I am delighted we have a business in our community that cares enough to 'Do it up right ' for kids.

Enjoyed a delightful lunch with five wonderful friends today. We had the best time we have ever had eatting out in a restaurant! Whose idea was it to hire gorgeous guys with amazing personalities to wait on us? We wanted to take him home with us! We watched while a senior customer actually slipped him a ten dollar bill in his waist band! Obviously even the older ladies love them too! The great thing is the food is as wonderful as the staff! We will return regularly!

Had a delightful visit! Tea was amazing. I have been searching for a particular tea ever since I visited London two years ago. They have it! Coronation . The food was perfect for me. The serving size may be a little large for some, but I took my left overs home and had supper! Our waiter was the cutesy thing. His name is Alex. Ask for him, he is delightful and efficient. The Lemon Curd and Clotted Cream were the best I have ever tasted. Wonderful scone. Apricot. Delicious! Just a perfect environment for lunch. We will most certainly make this a regular lunch place!

Very nice party! I was glad I had been invited. I have visited the tea room during lunch before with some friends. Lovely. The party however, was set up different. A beautiful buffet was set up in the center of the tea room. We could help ourselves to whatever we wanted and then sit where ever we chose. The food is delicious here. The chef is creative and I love the clean flavors. Many chefs muddy up food...I think they are trying too hard. This chef is fresh and the flavors are clean and surprising. The waiters served us our own pot of tea. I chose kyota rose festival. Wonderful! It was an evening to be remembered! Thank you!

Wow! It looks like there is nothing left to say. Everyone has already said it all, except for a few blind, stupid people with no taste, who say they don't like it! What a FABULOUS place! Charming to a fault, friendly help, wonderful food, soothing music, gorgeous art work, in beleivable tea choices......definately a do all over again soon kind of place! And please...you idiots who come on tea map just to trash a lovely establishment for some petty personal problem...can it! Teamap is a nice public service, and your tacky lies are not appreciated by honest folk who visit restaurants to eat great food and drink delicious tea in lovely surroundings!

Wonderful selection of loose teas from all over the world. They even have a big collection of Rooibus. I love the Winter Palace Marzipan...yum! The menu is thoughtfully put together, and the food flawless. Very nice! We enjoyed Scott. Cute, efficient and a great humor. We teased him about everything. Our table of six had a very good time! Darling tea room ! Our group had the nicest time! We normally have a few problems when our group dines out, but even our picky girl was delighted! We're thrilled, because there are a few restaurants we can't go back to because of the fuss she starts! The tea I ordered was Pomegranate Hibiscus. Delicious!

The tea selection was one of the finest I've ordered from. My friend Celeste is diabetic, and the chef even adjusted her recipe so she could eat without worry. Very kind. Thank you!

This is a horrible restaurant -- terrible service -- refusing to give us what we ordered, substituting ingredients I was allergic to, after I specificied what I couldn't eat -- but the worst was the live bug in my friend's salad. Many other horrors here as well. Avoid this place like the plague!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your cute waiters had Karen were a tiara since it was her birthday. She blushed, but loved the fuss! Your food is delicious, the décor gorgeous. Loved the music! Your fresh flower arrangements are lovely. A lot of restaurants have a few token fresh flowers, but your arrangements on each table are just perfect!

Too Cute for words! Enjoyed the Cookies and Cream Tea. The Apricot scones were the best scones I have ever eatten. I am very impressed with your clotted cream. I have tasted many 'faux' creams at other tea rooms...I loved yours...it reminded me of the Devonshire cream I had this summer in England. We enjoyed the beautiful food. Everything was tasty and much of it seemed almost too pretty to eat, but of course we indulged, and were glad we did!

Saw your review in the Birmingham News. We ate lunch Saturday. We of course were surrounded by other people like us coming to check you out for the first time. We were pleasantly surprised. I made my husband come with me, because it was a Saturday Nd my two best friends were in Florida. He loved it! I loved it! Your décor is gorgeous, the Chicken Salad is devine, the Tomato Basil soup was hot and creamy. Very nice! The crowning glory was the hot fudge cake with whipped cream! Wow! We will be back!

Judging by all of the glowing reviews on teamap the Spiced Pear is the place to be. Unfourtantly the inexperienced waiters, the expensive food that taste frozen and nuked, and the long wait (45mins)left something to be desired.

Tearoom Response
We are certainly sorry your experience was less than stellar. The Birmingham News reviewed the tea room the day before you arrived and gave us four stars, so the day you visited us you were surrounded by 76 other patrons at the same time. We are sorry for your wait. Our food is made fresh every day, and is prepared for each table. We certainly hope you will return and give us another chance to impress you. We are always packed between 11:45 am and 1:00 pm. Try coming at 11:00 straight up, or at 1:00 pm. Not having to be crushed in a crowd will help your experience greatly.

Yesterday afternooon our daughter Diedra had her 10th birthday party at the Spiced Pear. Our experience planning the party and attending the event was 100 % positive! Your perfect princess pony party is wonderful! The kids had the best time riding in the wagon with the cute. Little miniature horses. The pony named 'Rock Star' was their favorite. The games were fun for the kids, the craft project was cute. They all made the little dresser box. The cake was adorable. It is so hard to find people who do sculpted cakes like on tv. Had lunch Friday. Everything was done just right. I was on a lunch hour and the timing was perfect. I left my office, came to the spiced pear, came in with 3 co-workers, ordered, ate and returned to work. It took 57 minutes. Beats doing fast food any day! I had the poppy seed fruit salad. Two of my friends had the fruited chicken salad, and the fourth had quiche. We were all thrilled with the tea selection as well. Even the iced tea that Meagan ordered was special. Once you've been to the Spiced Pear, you may be surprised that it's fairly addictive. It's just so darling and the food is wonderful. I love all the different rooms- today we were in the 'garden room' at a table that's at a window looking out over the beautiful garden and pond. CUTE! DARLING! DELICIOUS!
We had a marvelous time at the Spiced Pear Tea Room. They didn't seem to mind that we were 'wearing purple' and asked 100 questions. Our red hat group tried everything on the menu. We even snitched a taste off each others plates. The chicken salad was a huge hit. The scones were voted the best anybody had ever tasted. By far, we decided this is the best 'Lady Food' restaurant in town!

I LOVE THIS TEA ROOM!!!

They have converted me to loose leaf tea. I have always bought my tea at Wal-Mart. I never knew what a mistake I was making! Today I had Peach Apricot. Delicious! I added cream and sugar to the first cup and then changed to cream and Stevia for the second. I guess I was feeling guilty! But what fun is life without guilty little pleasures! They had a dessert today that knocked my socks off....it was served in an edible milk chocolate bowl. Chocolate custard...then a layer of some kind of peanut butter fluffy stuff, kind of like a peanut buttery milky way, then chocolate custard on top with real whipped cream. Decadent! Well...it's official this is my favorite restaurant!

Charming, well decorated, calming atmosphere...have been three times and have not been disappointed yet. What a pleasant departure from the usual run of the mill lunch spots! The Artisan tea I tried today was a beautiful piece of work...I can't figure out how they do that. My favorite lunch choice so far is the Chicken Cheese Salad. I have always been a fan of good Chicken Salad and Pimento Cheese...theirs is wonderful. The serving sizes are plenty, the help are attractive and appealing as they serve. Thank you for a very nice visit.

My mom threw me a surprise birthday party on saturday she told me we were going to the library but we arrived here. She told me she had to drop something off for a friend and told me it was too hot to wait in the car. When I got inside, ten of my best friends were hiding in the green room. They jumped out and scared me to death screaming 'happy birthday'! We had a great time! They fed us and we played games...they rock! My birthday cake was a guitar with a microphone across it. Cool! They had a craft project for us to do too, we made cool braclets that we got to take home. It is the best birthday ever!!

Being a man, I really didn't think I would enjoy going to a tea room. My wife told me we were going to the Spiced Pear...so of course I went. Unbeleiveable! I had a grilled chicken sandwich with bacon and provolone. They offered me soup(Santa Fe) Champagne Salad, Frozen fruit salad, or chips. I tried the soup. Wonderful! So as usual...got to trust the wife!

My husband and I went to the murder mystery dinner and it was the funnest date we've had in a long time. Being part of the story instead of just watching a production made it hilarious! Having an interactive meal like that was just a blast, and we had so much fun with all the people we met that night, as we were all 'suspects'. I was very surprised to find out I was the killer! We really enjoyed ourselves, and the five course meal was fantastic. Thank you for a wonderfully entertaining evening, we'll be booking again soon.

If you have not been to 'The Pear' then you are missing out! I have been there at least ten times now, but just found out about tea map and had to tell all about this great little place in Homewood. I get the Perfect Princess service every time, but I love that even though it's the same combination of items, I get to try a different scone, different soup, different savories, and different trio of desserts each time since they change frequently. No matter what I've been served,I've always left very happy.

I had my bridal shower at The SpicedPear last weekend and my response is WOOOOW!!! As a bride to be it seems nothing goes as planned and you are constantly stressed. They took care of everything so perfectly though that it was like the first time I had relaxed since the engagement. They prepared a buffet that all my guests raved about. I can't even begin to explain the custom cake they made for me. Gourmet deluxe doesn't even begin to describe it. It was perfect, and tasted amazing. I know where I'll be holding my baby shower when the time comes :)

I have to retaliate against the negative comments below. I don't know how you could have such a different experience than mine! The food IS GREAT, not 'just ok' or I wouldn't be wasting my time posting a review. And the service was impecable- we were greeted by a very friendly hostess who helped us understand the menu and gave us a quick exucation on tea, as we had told her we knew absolutely nothing on the subject. The waiters are all very polite and helpful, and the one we had was able to answer all our questions, as well as provide quick and efficient service. My friend and I found it by accident and I am so glad we did! I have to bring my other friends to see this place, so cute! Thank you for a great meal and a wonderful experience.

My friend and I went for lunch last week and had what we believe was a poor experience. Overall the food was OK - NOT GREAT, except for the scones and curd (tasted like it was out of a bottle, not freshly made) that left a lot to be desired. The service was fine but not what we expected. Most likely we will not go back.

Loved the frozen salad and the fruited chicken salad! The Tuscany Pear tea was delicious. I really didn't have room for dessert, but I couldn't resist the cute waiter's request, so I tried the Lemon Mousse Triffle...Wow! Icing on the cake! It was the most fun I have ever had on a date! By the end of the evening, even though we all arrived as strangers, we all felt like we had known each other for years. We laughed and laughed. We do love to find places like this for our garden club. We meet each month for lunch. July was my rotation. I chose the Spiced Pear after seeing Bob Carlton's lovely article about it in the Birmingham News. He loved it...and so do we! Everything was just perfect! It is NOT easy serving 24 women. The darling staff handled every request with a smile! I can't remember our group ever eating someplace that so easily made us happy.

Beautiful antique crystal. It's all so feminine. The decor is just beautiful...nice job! I asked if a professional did it and was shocked to hear that the owner's kids did all the painting and planted the beautiful garden. When I asked who dug the fish pond, (I have one, and that's no easy job) I was told the kids did that too! I'm impressed.

Our group will be back, but I am coming next week for my best friend's birthday. What fun! Thank you for your gracious hospitality.

I couldn't believe how many gourmet teas there were! The selection was amazing, and they even had three pages of decaf teas for my mother to choose from! The hostess was very helpful in guiding us to a new tea that would suit our taste. I loved the fact we could get 'bottomless tea' with the 'Let's Play Bridge' tea service. It let us sample several types and flavors without having to buy pot after pot. What a great idea! I will be brining her back next week, this is our new weekly ritual. I took my two girls to the 'Mommy Daughter Princess Dress Up Tea' this past Saturday and I was so impressed! I just thought it would be a lunch for us, but they painted the girls' faces, had crowns for them to stick jewels on that they wore during our lunch, and even little crafts that we were able to take home along with the crowns! I was given an 'adult' lunch, but they made my daughters the same plate but with 'kid' savories. They loved their peanut butter n fluff tea sandwiches, and the two other kinds were very good as well, in their own words, 'very yummy mommy'. I was also impressed by the fancy crown and wand cookies in the goodie bag they were given before we left. And all the little girls dressed as princesses having tea was probably the cutest thing I've ever seen. If you ever do this event again, we will definitely be back, and with friends!

I am very picky when it comes to chicken salad, actually I don't really care for it at all. One of the tea sandwiches or 'savories' as they call them, was chicken salad so I tried a tiny bite as I always venture I may have come to like it overnight somehow... Anyway, this is the first time I ever REALLY liked chicken salad. It was so good I ordered a whole sandwich to take home with me. I highly recommend the fruited chicken salad to anyone now. Delicious food, gorgeous decor, delightful gardens, had a memorable dining experience with 6 friends. It is nice to know we have a restaurant that is perfect for women to do lunch. The menu appears to have been designed by a woman, the decor appears to have been done by a woman. The servers are handsome and charming. We had a great time and will surely return to make more memories. We had reservations, so our table was ready for us when we arrived...that was great! The tea room was completely full. Was invited to lunch with friends at the spiced pear Friday, what a wonderful establishment! The flower garden and fish pond is so charming. The picket fence is perfectly appropriate for a tea room. If you think in your head what a tea room ought to look like, then you'll see it when you come to this one. I was pleased with every little touch. We only had an hour for lunch, because MaryBeth joined us from her office. We were in, waited on, and ate a wonderful lunch all in 49 minutes. What a refreshing change for Homewood dining! I was in Thursday with a church group. You were very accomodating. Our group of 22 was seated in the room with the apple green walls and the climbing pink roses. Beautiful! The temperature was just right. I am usually too hot when I go out in crowds. The waiters were so good at what they do. Cute too! They reminded me of my grandson who goes to Alabama.
The tea of the day, served in tiny little cups was Pomegranite Hibiscus. Delicious! The only kind of tea I have had before coming here was lipton, or oolong in a Chinese restaurant. Went to the Tea Room for lunch during the week. after reading about it in the news paper and looking online. Food was good and well proportioned, but not sure if the service was worth it.

1) Pot of tea has 2 different prices 1 for regular and another for premium. The menu doesn't indicate which is which. When we asked the waiter he told us which ones, we then choose ones from a list that was not indicated. When we placed our order he said that one may be a premium because of the antioxident level. We then asked for him to let us know.
2) There are specials like the quiche and soup of the day. Waiter wanted to know if we had decided before ever telling us what those were so we could make a determination.
3) The menu also lists savories and trio of desserts on their ... (more)

Thank you for your candid critique of one of our servers. I'm sure his mother would be embarassed that he looked better than he acted, I know I am! We have gone to a lot of trouble to create a lovely atmoshere, and delicious food. We certainly do not want waiters who destroy that experience. Tearoom Response
I'm sorry your experience was anything but perfect. Your group arrived at 11:35 am and was promptly seated in a pre-set reserved dining room. The waiter attempted three times to take your group order. Each time you asked for more time to make up your minds. Nine other tables of customers came in placed their orders while you attempted to decide what to eat. The ticket was time stamped as it was hung for 12:04 pm. Your meal for 13 was prepared from 12:04 to 12:22. As the food was plated and ready to deliver to your table, you jumped up and said you had to 'catch' a bus. Between 12:04 and 12:22 your party enjoyed full beverage service. We serve groups on office lunch hours all the time with out difficulty. No mention was ever made of a tight schedule for your senior citizens. The waiter and hostess offered to box your order to go when you decided to run out on your check. Your group simply refused to pay. Groups of your size normally pay a deposit, we waived that because you are seniors. We turned away four tables of four while you enjoyed your unpaid for hot tea...Running up a tab in any establishment and walking out without paying is a misdemeanor. You should at least have paid in full for your beverage service. If the City of Clay senior center has a financial problem, you should have talked to us in advance, we would have considered a special price to help you out.

It is nice to have a tea room in the 'over the mountain' area.
My visit was lovely. I hope to share with dear friends soon.
The photo of the front of the tea room does not express the real charm of the tea room. The garden in front of the house is lovely, especially now (in June).

I will never buy tea from the store again! Now I get all my tea from the Spiced Pear. I've spoiled my pallet and I'm glad because I was missing out. The food was amazing as well.

I'm trying to figure out your hours. We do not live in Homewood but pass thru often, your hours say tues-sat 11-6 and we have stopped by for lunch but you were not open. Maybe your hours should say (By Reservation Only)

This review on food and service is based on a conversation with a friend who had attended an event. But after unsuccessfully trying repeatedly to dine at this tearoom (even requesting reservations), I was notified by the owner that it is not open for lunch to the public until May 12. Hope this saves someone else the trip to Homewood for nothing.

Wow! What a deliciously girly location for any upscale event! Attended a bridal shower this week end, wonderful!! Crystal, china, beautiful flower arrangements, perfect music...and those cute guys in tuxes! What a clever idea. The tiny little pullet eggs, and the rasberry tarts. YUM! Great chef! I will definately bring all my girl friends here!

I helped host a baby shower this past weekend, and The Spiced Pear was a fantastic location for our little party! Everyone commented on the pretty décor, great food (and tea, of course!), and the friendly staff. The shower really could not have gone better. The Spiced Pear is a perfect location for baby or bridal showers, Red Hat luncheons, or any 'girly' event you can think of! Highly recommended!

I have a feeling when this little tearoom is finished, it will be fun and bustling. Already there is delicious food and tea. A friendly, attractive Hostess and servers who did a good job - dressed to make it special in their tails. The details left to complete are all that are needed before opening day. Good luck and much success.

What a fun experience! The decor is just beautiful, & slightly whimsical, with each room painted a different beautiful shade. The tea was whole leaf, delicious, & beautifully served in small teapots. We had a rose tea and a tea called Lady Londry. I favored the rose, the others at my table favored the Lady Londry. The food was fantastic: delicious finger sandwiches, a fabulous frozen fruit salad, and scrumptious cookies & brownies. I can't wait to go back with my sisters!!

We came to your lovely tea room as a group of friends, there were 6 of us. We were so surprised to be greeted by gorgeous guys in tuxes. What a great idea! We would much rather be waited on by great looking guys than women! i mean come on! The food was beautiful and delicious. the frozen salad was to die for! We enjoyed the fresh flowers, wonderful music, and chandeliers. We will be back!!

What a darling tea room. This is the first really feminine tearoom I have seen in Alabama. The colors, drapery, art work, china and crystal...wow! Tasteful, classy, delicious! You have the largest selection of teas I've ever seen. I loved the Vanilla Pomagranate, and the Chocolate Chai. Can a girl ever get enough chocolate? The fish pond, waterfall and fountains were awesome. My daughter is getting married and we're having our rehersal dinner at your restaurant. Thank you for the perfectly delightful time.

Charming, quaint, and a calming atmosphere. Clean and fresh with hardwood floors adding a warm feel to a upscale establishment in the heart of Homewood. Excellent food, chicken salad to die for and a frozen desert very refreshing. The blueberry and pomegranate tea was delicious. For a new establishment on the first day of opening not many glitches to be worked out.

A charming, not too fussy tea room located in a 1920s-era house. Hardwood floors, beautiful rooms, each decorated in its own pastel color and decor with antique chandeliers and accessories. Even the powder room showcases a small collection of charming antique teapots.

Once the full menu is established I will definitely be back to try the quiche, salads, and sandwiches that will be offered.
