I have been an aavid customer of Breaking New Grounds in Durham literally since the day they opened. They have continued to expand their selections and maintained a level of quality I have not found elsewhere in the state. At this point I drive an hour each way just to buy my tea from them! GO VISIT!!!

I was born and raised in Frankfurt Germany, mostly I miss the cafe's and the pastries,I discovered this place on one of my trips to the beach.I am thrilled to find a place that has lose tea.The tea water is hot and does not have a taste of coffee. You can enjoy your tea in a real mug ,not a paper cup.The sweets are good. The place is always very busy, but I have always been served with a smile.

I even brought my parents here when their visiting. In their words 'the coffee is good, hot and you can trinnk it out of a cup, that is not made out of paper.

While my husband and I did choose to have coffee instead of tea, I must say that we had a delightful experience. I got a regular black coffee and my husband got the cafe mocha. Both were amazing, the service was wonderful even though the place was well lined with eager customers. I also took the recommendation from the gentleman behind the counter to get the pistachio muffin. It was so moist and delicious! I loved everything about the experience so much that I just had to get their t-shirt to commemorate the event! We loved it all and would recommend them in a heartbeat!

I have to say that the first review of this coffee shop is misleading. This guy was just pissed he parked illegally. I've lived in the seacoast for six years (not a tourist) and I have to say breaking new grounds excels at variety and quality of its drinks (the cakes are rich but obviously mediocre) the staff are hard workers and don't bend over backwards for anything than to serve you speedily and get you fantastic drinks as fast as possible. It's a landmark in Portsmouth and we appreciate it's character because it's run by locals. And if the girls have mustaches - more power to them, mister!

I am familiar with the ogunquit store. I would visit this store almost on the daily... until the owner came out and yelled at my girl friend for parking in a space that appeared to be for customers. his behavior, and the behavior of the rest of the staff (young girl with a mustache) was certainly enough to disregard the convenience of having mediocre coffee, poor pastries, and slow service so close to work and find a new place for tea and coffee. the best coffee in Maine is the freaky bean!

I thought the two ladies who served my family and me were rude. They seemed rather put out they had to wait on anyone at all. I will not go there again.
