The Potted Geranium
Wow! Simply, wow! This is tearoom perfection. I take my mom here every year for her birthday. It's a two hour drive each way for us (coming from Fayette County) and we're happy to make that drive. Full disclosure (for you guys who might be scoffing at a place like this or for you ladies who think you'll never be able to go unless you can get one of your girlfriends to go with you because you think your husband will NEVER go): I am a straight, married man in my 30s and I can honestly say that I LOVE this place. I do not feel out of place one bit here. Not only that, but I feel very welcomed and always want to come back as soon as I've left. This place is simply gorgeous! I've always loved the idea of a Victorian tearoom, and The Potted Geranium pulls it off flawlessly. There is none of that cheesiness you often find in other tearooms and restaurants that are trying to be something they're not. This place owns what they do. This place makes you feel like you're stepping back in time and I LOVE that. The service at the tearoom is your quintessential Southern hospitality. Very accommodating. We usually bring my mom's birthday presents out there with us and the ladies always welcome us to open them there. Their food is top, top notch from flavor to textures to presentation. I like to eat at a lot of nice restaurants (The Ritz-Carlton Lodge off the same exit is one of my frequent stops) and find that the more nice restaurants I eat at, the higher my standards get. That being said, The Potted Geranium is up there with the best. As a matter of fact, the chef/pastry chef (she does it all!) is a former chef from The Ritz-Carlton Lodge - not a surprise once you experience their food. Oh, and by the way, no matter what you have, make darn sure you have some of their Devonshire cream. It is simply ethereal. The decor is spot on. Nothing is cheesy. It is a classy, southern home that is authentic down to the smallest detail. Make sure to get up and walk around to see all of the rooms, both upstairs and downstairs, in this beautiful house. The Potted Geranium is one of the highest rated tea rooms in the entire country. If you're ever in the area (or even in Atlanta), do yourself a BIG favor and go! It is more than worth the drive.
