What a jewel Dunedin has in this adorable little place. The ambiance is wonderful and the owner is delightful. She was so up to date on all the teas and had great suggestions for the holidays.
We truly enjoyed ourselves...many thanks!

Delightful is the word that comes to mind to describe the luncheon my two friends and I had in September at Moffat's. The service was great and the atmosphere was very friendly. The food was superb and many of the recipes have been handed down in the owner's family. The three of us definitely plan to go back!

Nice tea room, good food. I loved the small house - and the fact that all 7 of us were alone. Staff is wonderful and very friendly. Price is a little on the high side , but that's to be expected in downtown Dunedin. I expected to have a variety of teas to try, versus just one flavor. Only thing I would caution, is to ensure you bring enough cash in case on or more of your guests does not show. If I would have known ahead of time that I needed to pay for those not showing, I would have been more prepared. Other than that, the bride to be had a wonderful time and that is all that matters.
- Melissa 10/05/09

Tearoom Response
Hi Melissa and thank you for the review. I am so pleased that Heather (the bride to be)was so happy with her special luncheon. We made sure all the requests were accomodated including all the purple accents...you girls all looked fabulous in your hats:) I am sorry, however, that you experienced a few concerns. As you may remember, your original reservation was for 11 people, then the day before you confirmed for 9 guests...and then after your arrival you told us two guests were not coming...at that point we already had all the food prepared, so that is why you had to pay a little more than expected, but you did receive all the food for the missing guests which went home with the bride. As we mentioned, we do all fresh cook the day of the event, so that is why we have to charge for the confirmed number. Again, we are so glad you al enjoyed the food and fun during your visit. I know you all will look beautiful at the ceremony!

My family and I discovered Tea Houses a few years back and have been trying to visit a different venue every time. Well, I have to say with Moffat's we are repeat offenders!! Ooooh, so yummy. We are going back for our third visit this weekend and I can't wait! I adore Downtown Dunedin and this splendid little place adds that much more to the area. The food is fantasic, I have loved every soup, scone, sandwich and dessert! I am drooling just thinking about it!Always surprises me what is on the menu and I am always left wanting more. The decor is adorable! The staff is pleasant and a joy to talk to. I definitely recommend this tea house to everyone!

From the moment that my mother and I arrived for our tea luncheon to the moment we left we were treated to a tea experience that we truly enjoyed. It was wonderful and relaxing. We were enchanted by the ambiance of the little tea cottage – so cozy! The food was incredibly delicious! The Melba peach soup, the fresh baked scones, the wonderful array of tea sandwiches and the delicate sweets were beautiful and tempting. The charming owner, who never allowed our teacups to remain empty, served us. There was effort, time and thought given to our tea luncheon preparations – from the beautiful presentation of the tea service that included perfectly brewed raspberry tea (my favorite), to the artful packaging of the teatime goodies that we took home. As we left Moffat’s my mother and I knew that we had found a little treasure of a tea cottage in Dunedin, and knew that we would return to it time and time again.

The ambiance of the lovely little cottage was only enhanced by the warmth of the tea, the special cold peach melba soup, the beautiful and delicious sandwiches, breads, and desserts on the tea server, and the hostess giving us her expertise on what was being served. I have recommended it to others after enjoying such special afternoons.

I really would be hard pressed to come up with enough adjectives to describe how much we love this place! Our second visit was last weekend and we've already made reservations for our next visit in September. My daughter and I took my vacationing Mom there in March for our first visit. It was wonderful! They were so attentive and friendly. One of our party was almost an hour late but they never gave it a second thought and kept us entertained and the tea coming until she arrived. We went again on Saturday with someone who had never been there and she cannot wait to go back. She has a huge sweet tooth and was very impressed with the blueberry tarts and lemon cakes. I loved the chicken salad (just like mine!) and the banana date bread was so moist and yummy!! By the way, we had chocola... (more)

my friends and I had tea here this weekend. we have been to several tea rooms together. the service was fine. the food was average. we have had better. the chicken salad was fine. the scones seemed like they were stale they broke apart in many pieces. did not care for the devonshire cream it tasted like sour cream. the same creme seemed to be used in the cream puffs. the tart with blueberries was very good. however, no one cared for the lemon pastry. the atomsphere is nice. the shocking part was that we were given one bill for all of us. we have been to other tea houses and they always asked how we wanted to pay. some of us were going to pay with cash and the others had debit cards. when the server came to take our check we were told that we could only use cash or checks. ho... - laura 07/26/09

Tearoom Response
Laura, thank you for the review. I am so sorry you didn't enjoy everything during your visit with us. Our scones are baked fresh every morning, and traditionally they are not a moist baked good as for the Devon Cream, it is not supposed to be a sweet addition to tea cakes and breads and our cream puffs are filled with whipped heavy cream, not Devon Cream, but again sorry you didn't enjoy it as much as we had hoped. Again, my appologies for the credit card issue. Many small businesses do not take credit cards because the fees are so high and I don't like to pass that cost on to customers...we do take checks as well.

My sister and I have visisted many 'tearooms' in the area and I must say, Moffat's is one of the few I would actually call a Tearomm. The focus is definately on the pleasure of having tea! The hospitality is over the top, but the food is certainly the higlight of the experience. The chicken salad is unbelievable and the scones are the best I have ever had!!! What a wonderful, inviting place to spend time. If anyone wants to spoil themselves, this is the spot.

A friend and I took my daughter to this tearoom. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. Although the atmosphere could be charming in a whimsical sort of way, the quality of the tea was low, and the food was disappointing at best. There was no selection of teas. Teapots were not left at the tables for the guests to serve themselves, and I was annoyed by the constant interuptions to pour tea and or for the staff to talk about other parties held there and their stint on Bridezilla. The Tampa Bay area has some outstounding tea rooms, this is not one of them.
- TeaDiva 05/22/09

Tearoom Response
It is curious that you didn't leave your name...however we are a Scottish Tearoom and the British way is not to leave tea pots on the table...it spoils the integrity of the tea. As for variety, we have over 20 teas available, we start with a daily house selection, but guests are always encouraged to try other teas, types and flavors. I am not sure why you did not enjoy the food...I guess it is just a matter of taste...enjoy your summer:)

I was just on this site, reading reviews, trying to see which teahouse I'd like to go to... After reading how the owner has responded to a few customers, I am completely turned off by this teahouse! I don't like the way you have responded to the few people who said something negitively...it was just rude! I also have to suspect that the owner is pretended to be other people... On the 3 negative reviews i've seen on this page, someone right away comes jumping to your defense?? Weird. Ifyour only sign is the one posted on your picture, then I can totally see how that one lady kept missing it, espically since it's a house! That sign looks tiny! And who doesn't take credit card these days?? Esp if a meal per person cost (assuming) about $20? Not everybody carrys cash! Anyways, glad I read these reviews before I went! Owner- you shouldn't be so rude to customers!! Thats such a pet peeve of mine(which is why you won't be getting my business)
- Kate 05/19/09

Tearoom Response
Hi Kate! For someone who hasn't been to this tearoom, you certainly made a lot of judgements about it, including leaving a review for something you have no knowledge of...sorry if you think that is rude, but to leave a negative score for food, variety, service etc.on a place YOU have never been to...well need I say more. I think you have an agenda and should feel ashamed of yourself for trying to disparage a small business.
Variety:     Artistry:     Service:     Food:
I apologize to the tea room owner for again responding to this last response again!
I can assure you I AM NOT THE OWNER OF THIS TEA ROOM.' While it may not have been taught in CULINERY SCHOOL' to come to the defense of other businessess because of competition....I am not close to this tea room at all and felt your review was silly. Again, if you want to drink lots of tea and do not want to wait on a server...why don't you ask for the Tea to be left on your table?
I think you have other issues apparently and to write this much over my response to you, is a bit over the top! It is an honor to pour a guest their tea...I wasn't there and if the server had a piercing or whatever, I would not especially like that or let my servers dress like that.

But please, don't imply THA... (more)

In response to 'Tea Lover' on 5-4, who felt the need to write after my posting: I honestly find it very hard to believe that you have no connection to this tearoom. You say you actually own a tearoom in this area. If so, they why would you defend this tearoom? Isn’t this tearoom competition? From the few pages of reviews I have seen, it looks like this teahouse has only received good reviews and that the owner responds back to thank them. She hasn’t responded yet to my review. I’m sure it came as a shock to her to not have something perfect written about her place. (By the way, I have a feeling you are the owner of this tearoom)

“Nit picking”—was this not a teahouse review page I wrote this on? Isn’t that what reviews are for? To point out your experience? The good and the bad? ... (more)

Responging the the Sherry who wrote the previous post. I frequent tea rooms frequently and why would you critisize a tea room when YOU WERE GIVEN A SPECIFIC TIME AND THEN EXPECTED THEM TO SEAT YOU EARLY! Just because they had an open table, doesn't mean they can seat you early. That is very selfish to expect to be seated when they are probably trying to finish with their other parties and this is a busy time. I know their food is not premade and very delicious. Quit critisizing when you probably couldn't do have the work.

While this was my first time at this tea house, it is not my first time to any tea house. I will not be going back to this one as my experience was less than satisfying. It is very very small and the only window air conditioner in the room kept going off as the Circuit Breaker kept tripping--thus making for an uncomfortable experience. Also, they brought out the 3 tier tray with dessert on it then brought out the quiche which they 'forgot'. I arrived 15 minutes early and even though 3 of their 5 tables were open, I was told I could not be sat until 1 pm--even though no one else was going to occupying those tables. It was a less then enjoyable experience. I definitely did not get what I paid for nor what their menu states for their 'most expensive' tea. Also if you use the ladies room, note that they keep all the dirty dishes in there...Think before going her.

- Sherry 05/09/09

Tearoom Response
Hi Sherry! I was surprised to read this today. I tried to apologize profusely for the circuit breaker problem on Saturday...not much I could do about it then, but try to make everyone as comfotable as possible. With the breaker acting up, it did affect the oven operation...we fresh cook so there was a delay in baking the quiches, which is why yours was a little tardy...it normaly comes out with the tier, which yes it is filled with all the menu items..top tier always has the desserts, that is a tradtional service. and you DID receive the full menu as described, including, I might add, your special requests for items with no seeds or nuts, which of course took extra time to prepare. And I am sorry you had to wait to be seated at the reserved time. The other tables you efer to were not set and ready for the 1pm seatings...we also had a 9 person party coming at 1pm as well, so we have to plan for seating to accomodate the numbers. As for your coment about the dirty dishes...shame on you! There were and never have been diry dishes left in our bathroom. Becuase the building is nearly 100 yrs. old, storage is at a minimum, so notneeding a bathtub for use, I installed stanless steel shelves so I could store china used for off site catering...it is enclosed by three curtains, obviously you opened them and peeked inside, but not closely enough. I'm sorry we won't be seeing again soon.

I love tea rooms and was excited to go to a birthday party for one of my daughter's friends at this one. Many of the food items looked & tasted premade. No sugar cubes or fun things for the girls to do with the tea. They put the cupcakes out first thing...it was such a distraction for the girls (and they wouldn't give them any drinks or eats until everyone got there - hard for little ones to be so patient). A lady working there (manager/owner?) was loud & grumpy and was in the kids' faces taking pictures - weird. The story time wasn't a fun girly, tea party or princess book, but plain old boring Cat in the Hat. Pics out front came out cute, though there weren't enough hats for all the girls. Definitely wouldn't recommend. Emma's Rose in St. Pete is much better in every respect.
- Maureen 05/07/09

Tearoom Response
Maureen, the birthday party you are referring to was for an adorable three year old, who had a wonderful time! Typically e don't do a story for the kids, uless requested, a story time was included beacuase we were wating on a couple of late arivals. Cat in the Hat is a clasic and most younger children like the ryming, it keeps them interested...the kids seemed happy. As for the food, all the sandwiches, pastries and such were made by us. The fresh fruit and honey graham bees were the only premade items. The cupcakes are placed on the display counter next to the party favors, just as a cake would be...as for the pictures, we usually make a college photo of the guests and the birthday girl and frame it in a cute little purse hoto frame as a gift, but since two of the parents didn't want the photo of their child taken we couldn't do that for this little girls party..so she missed out on that treat. Most of the parents like that for their child and don't find it wierd at all...it is usually very cute! To be honest, I was surprised how many Moms came to the event and stayed...most often they sit in the adjoining room and have tea and scones while the party takes place...at this event the Mom of the birthday girl didn't want to have scones and tea served to the parents so we didn't, that made the party room very crowded and loud with all the Moms talking etc.
With all tht said, the Birtday Girl enjoyed her party and that is what really matters.

I am responding to this post as I was reading the reviews. I have no agenda and no connection to this tea room. In fact, I have a tea room and been in the tea business for a long time. I feel that this customer needs some education in the art of taking tea. First of all, it is an honor to have your tea poured. I am sure they are not trying to 'save on water'. It is important to keep the tea hot and perhaps they want to have a servants heart and pour your tea for you and keep it hot too! We do both depending on the situation. If it is a busy time and the table is crowded, we sometimes keep the tea in a cozy on a table close by and refill cups often. There have been guests burned if the pot is left on the table, especially with children in a group. A lot of times people are so busy... (more)

My mom and I love going to tea rooms all over Tampa Bay and in any city that we are visiting. We were excited when we heard about this one (we went back in Sep of 08) Despite the fact that I had directions, its took me about 15 mins to find the place, after going up and down the same road. The sign (at least at the time) was SO small and totally hidden by trees. It made me so frusterated that we were about 20 mins late for my sisters birthday party because the tea house was not clearly marked. The chicken salad sandwich was one of the best I've had- I loved it! At this point I don't really remember what else was served, but I did like everything. The thing that has kept me back from going though was the fact that they did NOT leave the tea pot on our table! They came poured our tea and too... (more)

I usually do not respond to anonymous reviews, but you seem to have an agenda, so I am making an exception...I am not sure why you are leaving a review 9 MONTHS after your visit, but let me try to address your concerns. Our sign is 3ft x 3 ft, City Ordinence, never had anyone say they couldn't see it, but I apologize that you couldn't see in your many passes. We sreve tea here at my tearoom...we don't leave pots on the table beacause the tea looses its ntegrity. Different teas steep at differen temperatures and times...we want every cup to be full of flavor, that is why we serve the tea cup by cup. Next time if you ask, we can lave a smaller pot for your use and keep the integrity of the flavor:) There is never a limit on tea consumption...ever. As for the sugar, there just isn't enough room to leave everything on the tea tables, and our guests like to be served. You certainly could of taken extra sugars and placed them on your saucer to get your to to the level of sweetness you desired...agin no limit and the servers don't count what you take, it is thier pleasure to serve you:) Lastly, I am so glad you enjoyed the chicken salad...everybody does (we are blessed)but to follow that with saying you were served some 'little snacks and tea' you know is incorrect...you were served soup, a full chicken salad croisant, curied eg salad with sprouts and cucumber sandwiches, scones devonshire cream, tea cakes and tea breads, fresh fruit tartlettes, cream puffs and chocolate dipped strawberries...most guests can't even eat it all and take home the rest. You weren't rude, you were upset about some things and I understand that, but you have to be aware of your words and how they can offend a reputation. I have worked very hard to make my guests feel welcome amd comfortable...I am sorry, in your case, we didn't.

This tea room is one of my most favorites in the whole wide world. I am saddened that I can only get there once a year. The food is seasonal, so it is always fresh and very flavorful. The tomato bisque is captivating to the senses. I dream for scones like Moffat's to be at all the tea places I visit. Apart from the wonderful food, the atmosphere is always charming, inviting and very relaxing. The owner is so much fun. She and her staff are quick to take care of every whim. I am looking forward to next year when I am back in Florida and can make my pilgrimage to this fantastic jewel of a tea room.
