  • Jin Patisserie

We had a nice experience at Jin Patisserie. The atmosphere is very unusual, in that there is only seating in the patio garden. It is kind of a crap shoot as to the table you'll get. We got seated on stools, which made it challenging to eat - not enough room on the table and lots of stooping. Having a private conversation was difficult, as the tables are elbow to elbow. Aside from that, the service was great. The tea selection was good, with lots of green teas to choose from. Not a whole lot of black teas though. The scones were good, but the cream was unlike anything I had ever tasted (not in a good way) - very thick and not sweet at all...toothpaste texture with no flavor. Their desserts, however, were stellar. Mixed review, but we'll try them again, knowing what to expect this time around.

  • The Tudor House

We stopped by the Tudor House for tea, but discovered that it wasn't a tea house in the traditional sense. The tea is not loose leaf and the brands are those that you could buy in a store. Their menu had an extensive selection of meat and veggie pies, however the pie I ordered was far too spicy. Unfortunately, the scones were a huge disappointment. They were dry and bland. Two perks: The staff was very nice and attentive. The adjoining store offers hard to find British candy.

  • High Tea Cottage

We have been to the High Tea Cottage three times. The owners are very nice and incredibly well educated about tea. The husband makes his rounds to each table to greet his patrons and chit chat about tea, and the wife will sometimes bring out a canister of tea for everyone to smell. That is super rare and definitely appreciated. The tea selection and food are great, and they have the best tasting jams for scones. The atmosphere is very home-like and warm. We will definitely return.

    Tearoom response:

Thank you so much for leaving us a lovely review and your kind words. All the staff try very hard to make your visit enjoyable and both Ken and I feel that the wonderful patrons that visit us are a rare treat to us and we look forward to welcoming you again. Once again, thank you. Jenn

  • Chado Tea Room

This is our favorite local tea house. The atmosphere is not victorian or 'girly,' which is a nice incentive to bring the fellas along. If you are looking for teddy bears and roses, this isn't the place for you. The scones and cream are excellent, the sandwiches are great (they toast their bread), and their vegetable soup is so rich and flavorful. However, it is their tea selection that truly makes this place great. The only caveat (and this may not even be a caveat if you are a true tea lover) is that the tea pots are not refilled with hot water. We are told the reason for this is to keep the taste of the tea consistent each and every time, and it does. This is a great place to be adventurous if you want to try new teas, as you aren't likely to be disappointed. We appreciate Chado's modest atmosphere and frequent about 2-3 times a month.

  • Tea Rose Garden

We go to this place when we are in the mood for 'no frills' tea and lunch. Their scones and cream are very good, but they only offer a generic raspberry jam. The sandwiches are okay, but what I do like is that they give you fruit with your meal. The tea selection is pretty good, and the atmosphere is cozy (it is also a flower shop, I believe). One big downside to the place is that they are sometimes understaffed, so you'll have to flag someone down to get what you need. Also, a lot of the servers are young males who don't know much about the teas, so they can't offer recommendations or describe any of them in particular.

I had a very nice experience at Chado. I met a few girlfriends here for tea and the staff was very accomodating. The food is not super high-end or fancy, but it is tasty. Their scones and chado cream are some of the best I've tasted. The tea is fabulous! Decor is minimal, but that is fine if you're not into the super girly atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.
