This is a restaurant, with a dog friendly patio in a traditional Carmel Cottage building, that also serves tea, homemade jam and marmalade and their own signature version of what they call a scone. It is large flat round unsweetened buttered cornbread creation that isn't crumbly. It's quite good, presented with jams and whipped cream, but not a traditional scone. They are the only restaurant I know of in the area that serves Welsh rarebit. They also have a pub style chicken pie, beef pie, and shepherd's pie. They have daily lunch specials, a variety of salads, and sandwiches- egg salad and BLT sandwiches among others. They make an excellent BLT. All the sandwiches are served with a fruit salad topped with whipped cream. It is a filling lunch. The business is cash only. Lunch for two with tea and a side of the signature 'scone' will run you about $40.00. Service is always top notch and the staff is friendly.

I stopped by on a Wednesday afternoon before a movie without a reservation, I knew that might mean they couldn't seat me but I checked anyway. Yes! That day there were seating's still available. Despite the construction outside the ambiance inside was one of peace and serenity. I had a lovely high tea, I think it was called the Victoria's Tea. The surroundings were lovely and classic. Service was attentive and the food was wonderful. I especially liked the crunchy parmesan wrapped asparagus horderve and the bischoff tea cookies in the jars on the table. The scone were yummy, and the sandwiches were excellent. I finished with an order of tiramisu-just couldn't resist it-delish. The teas and merchandise for sale up front were attractive and reasonably priced. If I weren't on schedule for a film I'd have done some shopping too. Great place for an afternoon tea break and worth a try even if you forgot to make advance reservations. If they can't manage a seating you can always shop there and then find a bite nearby in Santana Row but if they can, you'll really enjoy the tea service.
