If you want a wonderful venue for your daughter's Bridal Shower, then you must have it at the Cosy Cupboard Tea Room in Morristown, NJ. On May 17th 2014 I had my daughter Rebecca's shower there for 36 guests. Mr. Howard and staff helped facilitate my Alice in Wonderland themed party. It could not have been any lovlier. I decorated his already beautiful tea room with just a splash of nicknacks for the theme. The menu was incredible with 2 choices of soup, a salad, customized tea sandwiches, a salmon tart, 2 choices of scones and a beautifully decorated themed cake to order. Mr. Howard picked 4 teas that were all delicious and unique. In addition, chef Tom was hired to come in and do a wonderfully scrumptious crepe station along with demonstation. All were delicious. My guests were enchanted by Mr. Howard's discertation about tea and scones. It was lovely. This was a party any bride coud only dream about. My guests coud not stop talking about the day! My daughter thanked me profusely and wished that the day would never end. If you want something different, this is the place for you. I had looked at many tea houses before choosing this one. I ate lunch there with my daughter who was Rebecca's maid of honor and we both aggreed that this was the place for the shower. In addition, Mr. Howard uses loose tea leaves, not tea bags. He has beautiful English china and tea pots to serve all his fare.We can't wait to go back to this tea room and have lunch and delicious tea! Nadia B. The tea was GREAT- I especiallly loved the Lady Londonberry. Fruity and nutty-- great. I did wish they kept the tea warm considering we were BIG tea drinkers (it's huge in the southasian culture) and many of us asked for a try of each of the tea every 45 minutes or so. The tea sandwiches weren't that inspiring but still very good. The manager/owner was very nice and accommodating. Set up a prayer room for us, was super friendly and very professional-- as was the staff! I definitely plan to do another shower here for my own sister when the time comes-- what an adorable place. My only recommendation is keep the tea warm and more unique sandwiches. Was this review …? Useful 4 Funny Cool 3 Flag review Risha N. However, we had a 3 pm reservation and didn't sit down until closr to 4. I don't understand why we needed a reservation if they could not honor it. The place is quaint. We sat on the table and received dirty plates. The food was mediocre. The quiche had too much egg and the sandwiches were nothing special. The scones were decent. However, I agree with some of the other reviewers, the desserts seemed like they were bought from a grocery store... nothing special. They did have a nice selection of teas and it was always nice and hot. Based on our overall experience and how much we paid, I wouldn't recommend this spot nor would I return. Was this review …? I really enjoy the tea and the give course meal option. The salad was good, the tomato basil soup a bit sweet, they catered to the fact I don't eat meat and made some vegetarian sandwiches for me. The scone was delicious! I wasn't impressed by their dessert selection, I expected better desserts for some reason. The one thing I didn't like is that they were out of a few selections of tea. I guess they don't order the right amount. Overall I would totally go back Was this review …? Useful Funny Cool Flag review Justine G. We went for a friend's birthday and the staff were very accommodating and friendly, everyone left with a positive impression and a desire to return. This place is set up like a simple Victorian house, the decorations are a little sparse but nice. Do not go with anyone loud, this is low key kind of place. The food is simple but good, I got the soup, salad, and sandwiches. If you're a picky eater, this is not the place for you, the menu is limited and set. The chicken roulade was a bit on the sweet side, but I liked it. My friend got the quiche which she said was very good. The scones were really tasty, I just wish we got more than one each. The price was ok, it wasn't super expensive but the plates were on the small side. The owner also spoke to us and answered any questions we had, his warmth and friendliness were a big factor in making me want to patronize this place again. If I can't get into the city to go to Tea and Sympathy, this will do the trick. I also think its a great place to take your mom/aunt/grandma for a nice afternoon out. Was this review …? My husband and I rode our bikes on a beautiful sunny day and it was lovely to have a tall glass of iced tea delivered quickly to our table. The tomato soup and quiche didn't disappoint and the portion sizes were just right - we left feeling satisfied but not stuffed. The owner was friendly and told us about some of the special events that they have. We'll definitely be back! Was this review …? Useful Funny Cool 1 Flag review Shanee O. The place was well decorated, music pleasant. It appeared to have central air but they were using a window unit - strange, but serviceable. The tea sandwiches were eh - cucumber and cream cheese, or turkey and swiss, or chicken salad on stale bread with crusts cut off - not exactly a 'High Tea' experience. Scones were good with jam and in-house clotted cream. Desserts were either premade from an outside vendor or made from frozen or canned fruits and Cool Whip! Why would you use Cool Whip when you can make fresh clotted cream? Why sacrifice taste and use frozen/canned fruits when fresh is in season?! Service (by Jessica and staff) was excellent; the owner was not as courteous, although I honestly don't think he understood that. We watched him move two seated guests because his staff had sat them at a 4 top, when the courteous thing to do is let the guests remain seated and remove excess flatware, etc. to the other table. I heard him explain to two ladies that he serves the jam and clotted cream in a small glass bowl (which was perfectly fine) because it saves on the cost of providing those little one-time-use jam jars - guests shouldn't and don't need to know that! He also interrupted our conversation to tell us we ate our scones with incorrect etiquette.... Really? His son and general manager was friendly but did not appear to understand that calling out, 'Dad, Can you come here?' is rude when when his father is currently conversing with guests. The appropriate thing to have done would have been to wait until his father (owner) was finished speaking and then ask to see him for a minute. I would have given 3 stars until I saw the owner's behavior in action. In summary, for $35/person, improvement is warranted. This place could benefit from some of Gordon Ramsey's input. I was excited to hear of one moving to the area since there is only one other one I can think of. When I arrived I was surprised by how full the dining area was for a Thursday afternoon. Glad I made a reservation as we were seated right away. I ordered the orange tea and a friend ordered the English breakfast. Both of the teas arrived shortly thereafter in generous sized pots. For lunch we had both ordered the Avonlea tea, which was perfect for us. The tomato soup was delicious, the sandwiches were very pleasant, and the lemon poppy scone was the best choice that was paired with their homemade clotted cream. After all that we were offered dessert, which to I had thought was the scone. At the recommendation of the host, I tried the English Trifle, it was delicious. All in all I was very pleased with my experience here. As a note about price, this place is defiantly a $$ place, but it's on the higher end. If you plan on getting tea and assorted goodies expect to spend between 23 and 27 a person for that. Was this review …? Useful 6 Funny Cool Flag review Sandra S. Manhattan, NY 38 friends 43 reviews Share review Compliment Send message Follow Sandra S. 3/14/2013 The tea is decent, the scones are delectable, and the rest of the food is palatable if a bit simple. But I cannot, in good conscience, give a high rating to a place that charges $30+ (incl. tax and tip) for a pot of tea, a mini sandwich, some lettuce, and a scone. In NJ! Seriously! I've had afternoon tea at XIX in Philadelphia and the Plaza Hotel in NYC in the same price range but for much more elegant fare. For the people who put this at $$.... have you forgotten that this isn't even a real meal?! Was this review …? Useful 4 Funny Cool Flag review Jinn A. Go there... linger... and enjoy. The decor is so elegant, and I felt so ladylike and pampered as I sipped my aromatic tea served in china. Despite the upper crust vibe, the owner and his staff are so down to earth and friendly, it keeps the place from becoming too saditty. They had jazz nights in the summer, which I attended twice and had a really great time. Even if you don't like tea or jazz music, it's worth the trip just for the Sprimp Creole, which I think is only offered on the evening menu. They have awesome desserts. Oh yum. The desserts are worth an extra star, but I am limited to five. Was this review …? Useful 3 Funny Cool 1 Flag review Spencer W. Setting is nice, it's a cute little house sort of setup. Having lived in London and gone to some of the best afternoon tea on the planet, it's probably unfair to compare. But against the best - the tea was excellent loose leaf with plenty to choose from, however the food could have been better...everything was just ok when it could have been much better...italian wedding soup, a green salad, the mini sandwiches, quiche, scones and dessert...we sampled it all. Just seemed to lack that extra bit of freshness...we had mixed berries and cheesecake for dessert - but the berries were of the frozen variety when you'd expect fresh fruit if that's all your dessert has. Anyways, for those who haven't tried Afternoon tea, it's a nice setting and experience but food isn't top notch. Was this review …? Useful 4 Funny 1 Cool 1 Flag review Sylvia L. I ordered the Rose Cottage Tea. Basically you get some finger sandwiches, 1 scone (lemon I think that day) and 1 dessert (think you can choose mousse was an option but I chose the cheesecake). The food itself was good; however I left kinda hungry for $24. I've been to places in the city that might be slighty more but I felt full. I have uploaded some photos. You also get a bottomless pot of tea which is nice but beware. If you ladies want to get the same tea, make sure to order your own pot as the taste got diluted with the larger pots. Also when we ordered a different pot of tea, I felt it took a VERY long time so make sure to order another pot ahead of when you might want it. They have a lot but it's not that large for a busy day. They were busy the day I went so make sure to make a rsvp. Cheesecake Cheesecake Lemon Scone Lemon Scone Assorted Finger Sandwiches Assorted Finger Sandwiches Was this review …? The owner and staff are amazing and so attentive. We went when the place was hosting 2 different showers but they were so accomodating, it was a gorgeous day out, that they offered to set up outdoor seating! the food is amazing and there is a tea set selection for everyone. I enjoy a nice cup of tea and James the owner was so knowledgable, he has a really wide range of selection, and unlimited pots of tea, how can you beat that! See all photos from Melisa H. I can understand a unique experience coming at a premium price but the quality should also be there. If the prices stay the same but the owner/manager take the reviews seriously and improve the quality, I would give them another try. Was this review …? It is difficult to find tea made in a tea-pot anywhere (ie loose leaf tea) so for that reason I give the Cosy Cupboard five stars. The scones were delicious and fresh but they were not traditional enough for me. I like my scones plain (more like American style biscuits, not an exact match but that is more like it) and the scones at Cosy Cupboard Tea Room were sugared on top with other flavors. However, I think that Americans appreciate this type of scone so it may be that the owner (who I think originally hales from Jamaica) adopted that kind so to not 'scare the horses.' Despite this minor queja, having the scones as part of a Devonshire tea was very cosy. Other dishes are available that would contribute to a full lunch if this is your interest. Was this review …? They say is it was the best shower they went to. The cozy cupboard owner, james, and his son were the most accommodating men you could ever meet. They did not have two sandwiches on their menus that my pregnant self was craving and I asked them if they could make it special for my party and they said 'absolutely' and made it for my party and it was delicious! They helped me with setting up the room so everyone would fit comfortably. I had around 40 guests and lots of large gifts. They also were very interactive with all of my guests, so everyone felt like they were at a home of a great friend or relative. James taught everyone the proper way to eat a scone and then left a extra tray for everyone to an additional one home. (There wasnt a scone, or crumb left... they are by far the best scones you will ever eat in your life.... and Im not even a scone person!) The china the cozy cupboard uses is so elegant and classy. If you are looking for a place to had a bridal or baby shower this is the place.. This has now become my mom and I 'special place' to go for brunch. The broccoli soup, house salad and quiche is my favorite.. and of course now their scones! Was this review …? Useful Funny Cool Flag review Toni P.
