I've been to August Tea Room once before and had a great time. The Owner, Lety, is great. The food was great and the service was excellent the first time. The atmosphere was cozy and cute. I decided that I had such a good time before that I would celebrate my birthday there. I know my group was large, but I couldn't help notice that there was a huge lack of detail. I emailed earlier to let Lety know about some allegies ( fish, nuts and whole eggs) - but there were still tuna and egg sandwiches and nuts in the dessert! Yes, there were other things to eat, but guests should be able to eat what everyone else is eating. Clearly a lack of communication between the owner and chef but it was taken by me as simply neither cared what the customer wanted. I NEVER do that to my customers. When a customer tells me they have a guest will allergies I always accommidate them. Especially since I was the one allergic to nuts and it was my birthday!!! I couldn't eat one of the sandwhiches and one of the desserts. I was really dissappointed because I love to try everything. I want everyone to be happy and not feel they are being deprived at the table. The chef had no customer service skills whats so ever and because their work area is open to guest. . .she needs to be careful of her tone with employees because you can see and hear all from the guests perspective. Then there was the issue of not being explained the reservation policy. Yes, I RSVP for 15 people. . .but not once did Lety or her staff ask me during thier 3 confirmations if there were going to be any children ( which there were 4) as their price would be different - they don't eat as much. So they charged me adult prices for the children solely because I reserved for 15 people. I am in the food service business myself and am a Chef. . .so maybe my expectations are higher. I suggest Lety and her staff read Charlie Trotter's Lessons in Service. I was going to be a loyal customer. . .but that has all changed now. I usually go to SF for Tea and was excited that there was something in the Valley that can take care of my craving with out the drive. . .but I guess not.
