Made reservations for party of 10 five months in advance. Advised that one of the attendees had severe not allergy. Was told no problem the chef's child had the same problem. One week before date received a call saying they could not accommodate the one person. Scrambled to bring in tea from another establishment for the one person. Nightmare!

    Tearoom response:

The owners and I were very concerned after reading about your experience. My son does have a severe nut allergy and I understand the concerns regarding food allergies are to be taken with utmost seriousness. I do ask people about the specifics of the allergy so that we can do our best to accomodate their requests. My only stipulation when speaking to someone (specifically about a nut allergy) is that while we can provide a nut free Afternoon Tea I cannot promise that there is not a chance of cross contamination if there are nut items on the menu. Also, if we have utitlized our local bakery or chocolate shop for a special dessert that month then I cannot promise that they do not use nut free products. My compromise with food allergies in these situations is that we will have a substitution available. I even go so far as to ask if the person with the allergy needs to have their food served on a separate platter to avoid touching other foods that may contain nuts. I was dismayed to hear that you had this experience when I go out of my way to work with the person with the allergies and come up with a workable solution. We put a tremendous amount of effort into our tearoom to make it stand out among the best and this situation is something I feel is unacceptable. I would like to have the opportunity to contact the person who wrote this review so that I may try to determine who you spoke to after the inital contact we had where I assured you we can work with the nut allergy. This merits immediate attention and follow up. I ask that you email me at teaonthetiber@aol.com to provide me with your contact information or call the tearoom @ 410 480 8000 and ask to leave a message for the General Manager (not the Tearoom Manager) with your information. My sincerest apologies to you for this event. I would like to assure other guests that this situation WILL NOT occur again. My thanks to this reviewer for bringing this to our attention.
