I have been to Tea upon Chatsworth quite a few times now. Each visit has been wonderful, and the last visit was quite exceptional. The new owner has added wonderful new ideas, the recipes are exquisite, and there is a full display of various teas leaves to smell and savor. Best tea room I have been to. Marilyn

I enjoyed a Sunday birthday tea with a group of 4 friends - the tea was delicious and they offered a wide selection of white, green and black teas and herbal selections - Our friendly server made suggestions when we needed them. Don't miss the Pearls of Fruit and Paris! We do 'tea parties' about 3 times/year (with our hats and gloves, of course! We love that - but Tea Upon Chatsworth provides them if you aren't a collector and the spirit strikes you!) We are a tricky group - one gluten-free meal and one lady with an onion allergy - me. They accommodated both special diets with a little phone call notice. The meal was EXCELLENT - from portion size to the beautiful presentation - not to mention the taste. The owner and the chef are very creative. I would definitely go back!

This tea room is lovely but there is just not enough food for the money you spend. On the flip side, the service is lovely, the tea room is pretty & the tea was very good.

My husband and I had a lovely Sunday afternoon at Tea-Upon-Chatsworth. We were visiting San Diego and, when we asked the consierge about the different listings on TeaMap.com for a traditional English Tea he said, 'Tea-Upon-Chatsworth is number one for traditonal English.' He told us it is under new management and the new owner has changed the decor, food and service to be more of what you would expect in the 'Old Country'. And he was so right! The moment we walked through the door, my husband and I felt like we back home in England (except the weather outside was better). Warm and inviting with lovely antiques. Staff was friendly and knowledgable about their tea. Food was superb. We will be back and we will tell all of our friends that this cozy tea room is a jewel!

Just spent a delightful afternoon at Tea Upon Chatsworth. I had the 3-course Afternoon Tea and I tried 3 varietals of tea from their premium tea list. Food was fabulous - fresh and delicious - and the tea was brewed to perfection. Service was excellent. Everything was so good that I booked their Valentine's Day Tea and Mother's Day Tea before leaving the tea room.

Tea-Upon-Chatsworth is my favorite place for tea in San Diego. Authentic English Country decor, beautiful music, and friendly staff. Just like the tea rooms in Britian but with better food and tea selection!! A San Diego Treasure I recommend to everyone

Enjoyed a birthday tea with friends and it was fabulous! The room was beautiful, warm and inviting. Service was friendly and knowledgable. Tea selection was outstanding and the ambiance terrific. Unlike the previous reviewer, I could smell the delicious fresh-baked scones and bread pudding the minute we walked through the door. Loved the entire experience. We will definitely be back.

This is under new ownership and I knew it the minute I walked in the door. There used to be wonderful smells...not anymore...just bland food, bland table, just the basics. Would not go back.

This was the 3 Tea Pals third time here and it was just as exceptional as before. The sandwiches were great, especially the warm savories. The teas were delicious, hard to decide which ones to try but we did favor Paris and the apricot tea. Thanks again for the great afternoon tea.

We had a group of 42 people the weekend after Mother's Day and all the ladies are still talking about the wonderful event at Tea-Upon-Chatsworth! Jenny did a fabulous job with the food, the servers were very pleasant and professional, and Joy did a 'Tea Talk' presentation that had the room so excited about the tea experience they were about to have! Thank you, thank you, thank you for making our event such a huge success! It looks like it's the beginning of a tradition, so we may see you again soon!!!!

      Tearoom response:

Our goal at Tea-Upon-Chatsworth is to give every guest a wonderful & personal tea experience. We thank everyone for your kind words and patronage. Sincerely, Joy

I took my mother who had recently turned 90 to her first tea ever the day before Mother's Day. Her eldest granddaughter accompanied us as well. We dressed in hats and boas from the Powder room and it was fun, fun, fun. The atmosphere was authentic, and the food and tea was exemplary! Joy is amazing and she came out and talked with us and was so happy to celebrate at our table by being in our pictures and enjoying conversation. I would definitely recommend Tea Upon Chatsworth as it is a highly personalized experience fit for a Queen.

I went to a tea with a very large group. I go to a lot of teas, and Tea Upon Chatsworth stands out for me with their food quality and variety of tiny baked bites. The quantity of items presented were enough to have me taking a little home. Everything was fresh and delicious.

I've had the pleasure of having three separate visits to the beautiful Tea Upon Chatsworth. My first time there was an afternoon tea with my Mom who was visiting from Chicago. She was enchanted with the place and we had a great time. The second, a bridal shower for my best friend couldn't have been more lovely. We had a small party of about 12 ladies and Joy worked with me to make sure everything went off flawlessly. We even had a separate table for presents & cakes. The teas are always hot & ready (my favorite is the Paris) and the menu changes every month and is always delicious. The tea room is decorated with beautiful tea cups and saucers, fresh flowers and other assorted tea related items. Place settings & tea pots are mismatched for a quaint touch and the linens are all vintage with lace & embroidery. For my third event, I planned an themed tea party to celebrate Marie Antoinette's birthday for the San Diego Costumer's Guild. Everyone attended in their best 18th century finery and it was a joy (no pun intended!) to be there. After resolving a mixup on my part - I miscounted the number of RSVPs to Joy, who quickly and efficiently rearranged tables & settings to make room for everyone - the afternoon went off without a hitch. Everyone told me they had a lovely time and would come back to Tea Upon Chatsworth again. And so would I - if only I still lived in California.

Tea Upon Chatsworth is a great place to relax and enjoy a variety of great teas and yummy food. The food is tasty, beautifully presented and the decor of the tea room is wonderfully quaint and not stuffy. I would defintely come to this tearoom again when I visit San Diego!! The servers were cordial and friendly. The owner, Joy, was very helpful with the tea menu and gracious about telling us her passion of how she started Tea Upon Chatsworth. I would recommend all my friends and family to visit this tea room in San Diego. I plan to go back soon!

Tea Upon Chatsworth is one of my favorite tearooms in San Diego County. Joy and her staff are attentive and efficient, the food is innovative and delicious, and the choice of teas is all one could ask for. I love the interior decor, which is cozy, but not fussy. The atmosphere is calm and the table service is laid beautifully. I highly recommend this tearoom.

Our San Diego Costume Guild, along w/ some members of the Los Angeles Guild, met for an 18th Century costumed tea at Chatsworth recently. I've always recommended this tearoom, and we weren't disappointed. The food is varied & top notch, and we're always given a new and interesting tea to try, even though we can pick again from a wonderful list of others. Of all the hundreds of customers Joy serves, I'm sure glitches happen. But it doesn't deter me, or my group, from returning often. In fact, I'm going again this week.

We came for a retirement party and we had the time of our lives. The food was delicious and although all of us had more than we could eat, no one felt like the food was heavy or that they had eaten too much. It was a great place to have a party ... or even just a place to go for a cup of tea! Service was great, teas were delicious, and we all look forward to going back for more.

I'd like to share my Tea Upon Chatsworth Teahouse experience with other tea lovers and get right down to the facts. Tea is NOT HOT when served and the brew is very, very weak. Water is not served, unless requested. Food presentation is lovely, but, portions are skimpy. Scone is fresh and delicious, but, tiny...smaller than one of the tiny scones from Starbucks. The cream and jam portion is miniscule. Food presentation is lovely...if only there was a little more of it presented. Staff is friendly, not overly attentive. Overall, you make your own tea party, which we did... but, for $27.95 plus tax and gratuity, the tea should be HOT and brewed properly, not luke warm and watered-down. As a suggestion: French press coffee would be a nice touch for those folks that want the whimsical ambiance and luxury of a teahouse, but do not share the strong affection for tea.

      Tearoom response:

      Dear Tea Lover,
Tea-Upon-Chatsworth is a unique one-of-a-kind establishment. We only offer tea because that is the reason we exist. Thank you for noticing our incredible food presentation and, in the future, if your tea cools down please do not hesitate to ask for a warm up or refill.
Thank you,
Joy

My dear friend introduced me to this tea room when I was in town visiting her family. Of course, as many of the other reviews suggest, the food was absolutely delicious and the presentation was beautiful. However, what made this experience really stand out was the personal touch of the owner, Joy. She came out and greeted us personally and walked us through the various offerings. As a person who is new to the high tea experience, this small gesture really made my day. Thank you, Joy! I will definitely visit again on my next trip back to California. An extraordinary experience, the perfect way to spend an afternoon with loved ones!

I've been to a lot of very upscale tea rooms in several states, and Tea Upon Chatsworth is one of the best EXCEPT for their appalling lack of service. I personally confirmed reservations weeks ago, yet while I was on vacation I got a telephone message from the owner telling me that one of her employees had made a mistake and that my time 'wasn't available,' in effect giving me and my mom, who was driving from 100 miles away, just one day's notice that our tea was cancelled. Firstly, I was dismayed that the owner laid blame on one of her employees. She, as the owner, is ultimately responsible for anything that happens, and trying to make it sound like it was simply an employee slip-up is extremely unprofessional. Secondly, the owner actually told me in her message that she had booked the entire tearoom for one group, yet somehow she only realized this shortly before our reservation? Obviously, she decided it was worth more to take the group instead of just me and my mom, so for her to tell me that there was a 'reservation mix-up' was disingenuous. Thirdly, the only options my mom and I were given were to have tea at 5:00 (instead of the 2:00 time I'd booked) or to come the following weekend. Had this been a true 'mix-up,' I feel she would have, at the very least, offered to squeeze us in at a small table, but clearly she couldn't do that if she'd already promised the entire tearoom to another party. I'm very disappointed with the bungling inefficiency (at best) or sheer dishonesty (at worst) I encountered in this situation, because Tea Upon Chatsworth is a charming, lovely tearoom in every other respect.

      Tearoom response:

      Dear Heather & Kim,
I sincerely apologize for the mix-up. Hard as we try to avoid mistakes, while I was away, your reservation was inadvertently taken for a time slot that had been previously booked for a private party since January. Understandably, you are upset but I hope you will find it in your heart in the future to give us another chance to make it right for you and your mom. I appreciate the nice comments you said about Tea-Upon-Chatsworth.
Sincerely,
Joy

I am very upset with the way my daughter and I were treated by Tea Upon Chatsworth. My daughter made reservations two weeks prior to our tea which you would think is ample time. But unfortunately mamagement to make more money opted to bump us for a large party. I live two hours away and this was to be our Mother's Day treat. My husband also felt bad for us and was mad. I have visited several times with my daughter and had found it to be a enjoyable experience and lovely food. While the food is certainly important the service is what makes the experience and sadly Tea Upon Chatsworth lacks. I just hope that the party that ruined our day has a wonderful time on our behalf. Also the last time we were there they had changed te menu which is fine but I feel it is too trendy and not in keeping with traditional teas. You would be better served to change to a bistro type of restaurant.

I just reviewed my receipt and yes, you are correct, the china is included. However, you make no apologies for charging a 9 month old baby a full Afternoon Tea and THAT is what I am angry about. I should have been charged gratuity on my Groupon (that is why I offered 20%), the china and tax. This is obviously how you avoided honoring the Groupon I used. Nowhere in the fine print did it state I had to pay for one full priced tea to get a discounted tea. I am not the only Groupon customer who was unhappy. You should read those reviews. How you run your business did not affect the enjoyment I had with my daughter. I just simply know better than to come here in the future or recommend you to friends

I was very angry that after calling for reservations and making it very clear that I wanted Afternoon Tea for only myself and my 9 month old baby, I was forced to pay not only for my tea, but they charged me a full tea for my baby. Really? Come on. I had a coupon for a discounted tea for myself, was willing to pay the 18% gratuity on the non-discounted price and tax, only to find they charged me for my baby as well? This was very poor business practice, very unethical and I can honestly say that after forking out $70.33 for me and my baby today (not including the $30 cup and saucer we bought), I will never return or give this room a good review. I could have done better at the Ritz. I am not new to tea rooms and have never experienced anything like it. Shame on this tea room for charging a 9 month old baby for a full afternoon tea when she sat there and ate her own baby food.

      Tearoom response:

Hi Phylicia. Your anger is quite shocking & unfortunate as I was under the impression you & your baby had a grand time celebrating her first tea with us yesterday. She looked so adorable propped on her own chair in her tea dress & bonnet! Pls. check your receipt again as $70.33 did include tea, beautiful china set which cost $30, taxes, & gratuity which you wanted to increase to 20% but I stayed with 18%. Best of luck in your cake venture!

My husband and I visit tea rooms wherever we are and since we live not to far from San Diego we gave this a try. They were kind enough to make a last minute reservation. While the food is excellent it's not generous. We've never been to a tea room that only offered two half sandwiches and the scones were smaller than the mini-vanilla scones at Starbucks. You only get one - they were, however, one of the best I've ever had. No choice of tea - you get their tea of the day and another different one towards the end of the meal. That's a nice touch and it was good but I think some folks may like a choice. Presentation was nice but some pieces were chipped - in my book this is a big no-no. It was, however, bone china and not 'made in China' stuff - another big no-no in my book. The staff could have been friendlier - the only contact we had was when they served the food and it was brief and to the point. We noticed one lady asked a question and was totally ignored. All in all I would rate it a C+ or B- - mainly based on value. A bit more food for the price would have been a plus.

      Tearoom response:

Hi Barbara. We strive to provide an A+ experience for everyone who comes to Tea-Upon-Chatsworth. However when guests arrive 1 hour prior to their sitting time, we do our best to accommodate you. Thank you for your positive comments about the quality of our food. I was wondering if you also enjoyed the savories that accompanied the sandwiches namely Baked Caprese, Roasted Green Bean Strata, and Brie & Dried Fruit Pate En Croute? We offer a varied seasonal menu & hope you can come & visit us again soon! Sincerely, Joy

Although we were at Tea Upon Chatsworth six months ago (to celebrate the 21st anniversary of our first date), our memories of that experience have remained fresh in our minds. The Special Holiday Tea was delightful and delicious (especially the pumpkin soup and the fig and brie croissant). The service was stellar and unhurried, the atmosphere, relaxing and the decor was charming - I especially liked the wreaths with tea cups and saucers. As self-described 'tea people' who traveled with Joy on a tea trip to China this past autumn, I know our presence at the tea room made Joy a little nervous. No need to worry!! It was a fantastic experience, as we knew it would be. From the moment we walked in the door, we felt extremely well taken care of. My husband and I wanted to experience high tea for the first time and decided to let Tea Upon Chatsworth be our guide... From the moment we walked in we were immersed into this delightful experience. From the decorations to the way the food is presented you can see they have paid attention to every single detail. The food was amazing, the best scones we have tried by far. The sandwiches were so fresh and tasty. Our favorite item (besides the scones) was the Apple Caesar tart. We tried a couple of teas with my favorite being the Apricot tea while my husband loved the Paris the most. Service was outstanding and we will certainly go back on our next trip to San Diego. There are a lot of teas we have yet to try... Regards Angela

A friend & I visited during Labor Day weekend. In my opinion, Tea-upon-Chatsworth is the EPITOME of what a tea room should be like! Friendly & attentive without being obtrusive. Creative/unique tea menu offerings + the traditional standards. Able to accommodate guests of any age. I especially enjoyed being able to try 3 different teas during my visit (their 'tea of the day' to start, a pot with the High Tea menu + a petite pot of dessert tea before leaving)! This was heaven :) Just wished I lived closer so that I could visit more often. Thank you for such a lovely outing.

It is a grand compliment to this establishment that I would chose to celebrate my birthday at TUC. My daughter asked if I wanted to try another tea room especially since I didn’t know what to expect with TUC’s Summer Islands Menu. I’m used to the more “traditional” afternoon tea menus. I was in for a delightful surprise. Our server, Anna, was very pleasant and attentive. My daughter and I loved the savories. Her favorite was the green tea and rice cuplet. I found it to be delectable as well. EVERYTHING was so fresh and tasty, which is essential for a tea room. The only thing that was not fresh was the wilted bougainvillea at our table but that didn’t matter since we weren’t planning to eat it. The presentation and artistry was exceptional, as always. The ambrosia cream was good but nothing compares to TUC’s Chatsworth Cream and Rose Petal Jam! My craving for the scones, cream and jam has not subsided. They are the finest ever! Paris tea is my favorite and I find myself always ordering the same thing. We were pleased to find out that all teas are available in decaf (for my daughter). She always orders the Almond Cookie tea. The owner, Joy, greeted us and made sure everything was to our satisfaction. TUC is a charming tea room and still one of my favorites.

I absolutely adore this place and my husband does too! I've been to Tea-upon-chatsworth twice and both times my husband and I had a wonderful experience. The food is delectable and my husband is quite fond of the green tea and rice cuplets. I myself love the scones! There is not a single place that does Scones like Joy does them! I too have been to a dozen tea houses but none have quality tea or perfected the brewing of tea as Tea-upong-chatsworth does! The service is also exceptional, Joy and her staff are very kind and attentive. I can think of no better way to spend a weekend afternoon. See you again soon Joy! Always such a pleasure!

I had requested a gluten-free option for a recent bridal shower held at this quaint establishment. They served thee most delightful assortment of fruits presented like a bouquet of summer flowers with a lovely liquid pairing. The stuffed yellow pepper with wild rice was baked to perfection. And the salad, the salad was so tasty and creative that I'm still thinking about it. As for tea, their Black Tea with Jasmine is a must try. The chef and staff obviously enjoy what they do and put a lot of love in their creations. I highly recommend Tea Upon Chatsworth.

This weekend I was at Tea Upon Chatsworth for the 4th time. It was a much anticipated baby shower. The experience was disappointing. Despite specifying that the menu was to be vegetarian we were served chicken sandwiches. In making the reservation it was very clearly spelled out (3 telephone calls) that no meat, poultry or fish were to be served. Out of 16 guests 7 were vegetarian and having been told beforehand the menu would be vegetarian - didn't hesitate to eat the sandwiches. It was very distressing to have such a gross misunderstanding with Joy. We paid for high tea. It wasn't worth the extra cost. For $30 for 17 people they should have been able to substitute a different sandwich. I think it was just laziness on their part. I was very disappointed - it is not someplace I will take a party again.

      Tearoom response:

      Dear Melody,
Yes, of course, how could I forget making a Toasted Gorgonzola with Candied Cherries & Walnuts plus also a Green Tea & Rice Croustade in addition to the Stuffed Pepper as your vegetarian substitutes? My best guess is that we inadvertently plated the Bay Leaf & Soy Sauce Chicken which essentially was an extra sandwich for your party. Not an excuse. I truly apologize but wanted you to know we did go the extra mile in accommodating your special request.
Sincerely,
Joy

Nothing makes a teacher more proud than a star student! I recently had the opportunity to speak at this tearoom and visit with Joy, a graduate of my TEA 101 seminar. Her tea foods are some of the best I've encountered. Her comprehensive tea list has something for every tea taste and her tea preparation was spot on. Joy has spent several years broadening her knowledge as a student of tea. Her hard work is evident. Tea-upon-Chatsworth, with its efficient staff and delicious menu, is a haven of tea bliss in the city of San Diego!

This was my first tea house experience. Wonderful! My friends and I were just thrilled to try it out and were not disappointed. We get together once a month to shop and lunch and I decided to try Tea Upon Chatsworth as a change. Glad we did! We had a lovely time, the food was excellent and the employees were terrific. The caramel tea was outstanding. The atmosphere was lovely--all of the china and silver and tablecloths were charming. Beautiful room. The quiche and sandwiches were tasty, too. And those scones...best I've ever had. The rose petal jam was to die for. I highly recommend this establishment to all. We will be going back very soon (and regularly!).

I still can't find a salmon bisque as superbly delicious as the one I tried at Tea-Upon-Chatsworth!I would drive 2 1/2 hours to have some again! The food selection is delightful. I loved the mushroom tartlets, the petite sandwiches, and the scones! They were freshly baked and went well with their clotted cream and rose petal jam. The food presentation was lovely as well. The atmosphere is charming. The staff was very helpful and attentive. Definitely a place to go to when I'm in California!

Currently living in Virginia, my daughters, ages 18 and 16, and I recently returned to San Diego for a visit. One of the first things we thought to do would be to go to 'Tea Upon Chatsworth'. During the 2 years we lived in San Diego we tried to go every month or so. I called Thursday morning and Joy was very happy to hear we would like to come to tea. I also arranged for my daughters to bring two friends along. We were so warmly greeted by Joy and Carol, who had served us often. When I explained that one of the girls was not coming after all, the extra place setting was removed and we chatted while giving our order for tea. I am rather a purist so I prefer unflavored tea and my favorite is the House Blend. My girls love the variety of flavored teas. Our tea was served properly steeped and ready to pour. We enjoyed conversation while waiting for our food. At the last minute, the girl who wasn't going to attend called to say she could and was across the street. Even though our food was ready to serve, Carol quickly took the late arrival's order, set her place and withing minutes, our delicious food was on the table. We had a wonderful time. Her choices are far from mundane. She even manages to make food items that I usually don't eat, wonderful. I wish I could get my scones that light. She includes warm savories, cold sandwiches, fresh fruit, scones with heavenly clotted cream and rose jam, along with a variety of desserts. We always take the full selection of High Tea, the price is absolutely worth it. The tea pot is as never ending as you wish and you CAN change variety. We left sated and full of good wishes. Joy's menu changes seasonally ans I wish I could go back for each one. Thank you, Joy and Carol, for your friendship too. Carol Nichols,Oakton, VA

The Perfect Palace to have a Royal Tea Party! Tea-Upon-Chatsworth made my 50th birthday perfect for myself and 40 lady guests. This event will be remembered by all who attended the rest of our lives. Joy the owner was accommodating, friendly, and knowledgeable to make sure my day was everything I dreamed of for my tea party. I started planning this event months before and searched in the San Diego area for the perfect tea house. I feel I found it in Tea-Upon-Chatsworth. Joy the owner (the owner is what really makes a tea house) was open to my ideas I wanted for my special day and even helped add to it with her ideas. Every detail was perfect from the tea selection, food and table settings including Joy and her friendly staff. I am confident that that this teahouse is the #1 Tea Party Palace in San Diego area and will recommend it to all who wants their event to be a party designed to their style, not just an ordinary tea party but a ROYAL tea party. Thanks Joy for making my tea party a regal fun, relaxing and pallet pleasing party.

Since discovering Tea-Upon-Chatsworth, the ladies in our family had our 3rd annual Mother's Day celebration this year at this charming little tea-shop. Every year, the food is outstanding and the presentation gorgeous! This year, our favorite was the risotto-filled mushroom, and the stunning Queen's Cake with marizipan & custard cream topped with a fresh fragrant rose from Joy's garden was a beautiful gift to all! The green & white tea with mango is so fine! We've stopped going elsewhere! TUC, as we lovingly call it, is the most unique, the most generous, the most gracious, and the most charming of them all!

I was disappointed the 2nd time I visited this tea house. The scones did not taste fresh, and the apricot cake with chocolate topping was dry. The teas were flavorful, but for the money they charge and the small amount of food given, it's not worth the price.

      Tearoom response:

In our 3 1/2 years of existence, we strived to create a family atmosphere for all our guests. My dears, please let us know during your visit if there is a problem so we can help you right then and there. Our goal is to always give you the best tea experience possible. The smell of your scone baking is what greets you at our door...with our Chatsworth cream and home-made rose petal jam it's among the many things that brings our patrons back time after time, for which we are very thankful!
Sincerely,
Joy

The variety of the menu (seasonal changes, often inspired by Joy's love of gourmet foods & her travels) is a delight & the service is truly THE MOST GENEROUS & GRACIOUS in town! It is leisurely, relaxing & you never feel rushed or unwelcome. If you are looking for aurthentic afternoon tea then this is not, it has been adapted to suit Americans. You where not offered to select the tea you wanted, and only one pot per table of four or more. The service was slow and the price very high for what you recieved. Other than that the shop is clean and the table settings very nice and the food was very good. Will not return in a hurray as there are far more traditional places to go in San Diego.

I have been to Tea Upon Chatsworth 3 or 4 times now and have thoroughly enjoyed every visit. It is tied for #1 for my favorite tea room in San Diego (and I have tried nearly every one in the area). While the service does tend to be slow, afternoon tea is not an 'eat and run' experience. One should enjoy the leisurely time given to sip their tea and have conversation with their table companions. Additionally, I love the variety of food served. Joy changes her menu on a regular basis so you can be sure to try something new each time you come in. On my last visit to TUC, I brought a friend for her first tea experience and her young daughter (who is VERY picky). Joy could not accomdate the food requests, so she (Joy) allowed me to make some sandwiches for my friends daughter. Most restaurants won't allow you to do this and we certainly appreciated their desire to assist us. Additionally, the scones at TUC are among the best I've had. What a breath of breath of fresh air - a tearoom that is truly a tearoom! I had the pleasure of having tea at Tea Upon Chatsworth while in town for a conference with a friend who lives there. From the moment we set foot in the door, it was personal service at its best. Joy, the proprietor aims to please and her staff is smiling and happy to be of service. The food was wonderful - every single course! For starters we enjoyed five unique tea sandwich treats. The Chatsworth scones were so flavorful and simply melted in your mouth. And the buttermilk brownies were another winner and a sweet ending. Our waitperson was knowledgable about the teas and made suggestions. We started with the Mutan White Tea and then had Paris at her suggestion when I mentioned how much I enjoyed vanilla. I left with a package of that. The location and decor is very inviting. The presentation is beautiful with a lot of wonderful desserts! The scones were very good, the sandwiches were very good, the music is classical, the whole ambience is very relaxing, just perfect! There were two other couples dining and they thoroughly enjoyed it too! Visit here, you will not be disappointed! I will definitely return.

What a wonderful afternoon we had celebrating a family members 90th.. birthday. The food and tea was amazing, as well as the service. When the owner heard we had some knowledge of the buildings history , she joined us to say hello. If your looking for a gift for that favorite friend or family member who loves fine china and excellent tea, visit the tea room for some amazing peices and teas. Can't wait for another trip to this wonderful place

I live in Northern California and put out a request on the Yelp talk boards to help me find a place to host a tea for my San Diego dwelling sister, who is expecting her first child. The savvy reviewers over there (I didn't know about this site) pointed me towards Tea-Upon-Chatsworth! The staff worked with me over the phone to get our large party booked (note: as stated in another review, I was also told at the last minute my party number was absolutely final so do be sure of how many will be going). I just had to get on the plane and show up that day. They gave us a big table down the middle of the room and were very gracious when we ran presents up and down the aisle, took lots of pictures and stayed the maximum length of time. The food was very good, pleasantly rustic and clearly made with love. I dare say it was better than the food served at fancy afternoon tea at a certain high end San Francisco hotel! I thought the tea selection was plenty big, I wonder if it's grown in the past year? The white melon and peach oolong were both wonderful. I don't know San Diego all that well, I am told this wonderful little gem is in a sort of odd location. But I say it's worth the drive! It was so nice to see the other smaller parties all around the room, a birthday party here, a couple in their Sunday-best over there. The room is so cute, filled with mismatched china tea cups and other cute antique touches. Like I said, this is a real gem, a great place to celebrate a special occasion or person in your life.

The place is very charming, the service excellent, and the food quite delicious and unique. My only quibble is that I wished they served REAL Devonshire (i.e. Clottd) cream, not mock. Also, the portion of the mock Devonshire and preserves they serve is tiny, not really enough for even one scone! Since the service is so good, I'd hope they give more if one asked. I would return to this place again.

I love Tea Upon Chatsworth. The decor is quaint. I love looking at the different tea cups for each table. I also like that the decor isn't too fussy and frilly. The food is excellent. Originally, I thought the portions were too small (I come from the land of 'Supersizeme') but when you think about it, you're not supposed to gorge yourself during tea. Therefore, the size of the portions are dainty and appropriate. The recipes that they have are very original and exceptionally tasty. They have a good variety of teas that would please any tea connoisseur. The staff is willing to please and very, very friendly. I don't understand why others didn't find it so. All in all, it's a wonderful way to spend a lazy afternoon.

I wish I could say I had a better experience at Tea upon Chatsworth. Overall the experience was dreadful. Most importantly, when you make a reservation PLEASE be aware you are making a non-refundable reservation. This was something I was never told. I made a reservation for four and a member of our party became ill and was unable to attend. When we were seated the server noted our party was one short. They told me that we could split the missing person’s food or we could take it with us but it had already been prepared for us and we would be charged for four people. Not a particularly nice way to begin a tea but we made the best of it. Now having been told that our food had been prepared especially for us we were quiet surprised that it took over 45 minutes for anything to be brought to out table. When I inquired with another server (our server was nowhere to be found) she said our server had been preparing our food and was almost done! Really, what can you say to that? There are many other lovely tea houses in San Diego that make a concerted effort to provide you with a lovely experience. I suggest you try an alternative to Tea upon Chatsworth.

This is a great little place--very charming with lots of authentic tea ware from England. The presentation is amazing. Two things I could see improvement on is 1)either provide more quantity of sandwiches for the price $$$ or offer additional to the guest after first course and 2) the day we were there the service was not exceptional--friendly but very very very slow and not real attentive.

Tea Upon Chatsworth has become one of my favorite afternoon escapes from my busy schedule. I didn't know what to expect on my frst visit, but was immediately made to feel welcome and pampered with the excellent service, and the warm and cozy atmosphere. The tea selection is quite varied, and I was happy to be able to try several different seletions to share with my party. Our server offered descriptions of the teas and had good suggestions to match the various courses. I appreciate that the loose tea is not left in the pot to turn bitter, each cup is as good as the first. And the food is absolutely exceptional, a terrific assortment of savories beautifully presented, followed by both unusual and traditional sweets. Tea Upon Chatsworth is a place to come and sit with friends and linger over delicious food in an elegant setting, with wonderful service. I'm hooked. Keep up the excellent work Joy!

I visited Tea Upon Chatsworth while in San Diego for Comic Con. I'm just getting into going to Tea Houses and still have a lot of questions. Our server answered my 'stupid' questions and gave me some information on naturally decaffienating tea. She was gracious and quick (though she was the only one there). The owner came by, asked how we liked it and wanted to know what our favorite parts of the high tea were. I felt like I was WAY underdressed for a tea house, but she was just as courteous and gracious and never blinked an eye. The gazpacho ROCKED. The food was good and it was nice to sit back and relax and havea nice slow tea. My only complaint were the deserts. I don't care for 'creamy' cakes and deserts, so all I got was once small cookie, but how is she to know that? I'll be back when I'm in San Diego again!

Six of us visited Tea upon Chatsworth as a break from Comicon on July 22 and had a delightful time. The food was wonderful. Everyone fell in love with the guava-rose petal gazpacho and the tea called Paris which was brought to our table to start. We spent a luxurious two hours, during which time the owner came out to check on our satisfaction. I've seen reviews of other places which complain that they weren't permitted more than 2 cups of tea without additional payment and were justifiably outraged. At Tea upon Chatsworth, we were told that we could have up to 12 different pots of tea for the six of us! We didn't do that, but we did get refills of Paris and members of our party tried three other flavors while we were there. This is definitely a place to which we will return when in San Diego.

July 2006 - My daughter and I are long time High-Tea aficionados. We have been to the ultra formal, as well as the relaxed, homey typical British type of tea rooms. By far, with no hesitation, I can say that Joy (the owner) has created the best experience ever in Afternoon Tea all that means. First, the food. The presentation is traditional, yet she kicks it up a notch by adding personal touches like real (not silk or plastic) flower petals and vines from her own garden. The artistry of the food is lovely and each morsel brings an exciting new taste that surpasses what you first expect, delivering a far more substantial amount of food than initially meets the eye. The Scones. OMG the Scones! Joy's son Michael gets full credit for the amazing scones. Some people will complain that they are too small, but they are not. They are perfect. The Starbucks scones are way too big, too dry and are overpowering in taste. Michael has it just right. Complaints not allowed. First, taste them in their pure state, so you appreciate how moist and delicious they are all by themselves. Then try it with Joy's homemade Rose Petal Jam. My eyes automatically closed as my taste buds danced around happier than they've been in years. Nothing compares. Well, until you try her homemade Chatsworth Cream (like Devonshire only better!). Service was not hurried, and you felt like it was okay to linger and enjoy the food, ambience and good company. Joy is a delightful hostess, great to talk with. This was a fabulous experience and I highly recommend Tea-Upon Chatsworth. My daughter and I hope to see you there!

I've been coming to Tea Upon Chatsworth for a little over a year and each visit proves to be better than the last. I've been to a few of the other tea establishments here in San Diego and they don't measure up to the authentic experience and ambience that Joy conveys in her quaint tea shop. For example, I was recently at a tea shop in La Mesa with a couple of friends. Although the tea sandwiches, sconces and pastries had great flavors they were on the heavy side, not the delicate, light flavors associated with finger foods for an afternoon or high tea. Another notable observation we had was when one of my friends had asked for a little honey, we were mortified to see our server bring her honey packaged in 'KFC' packets! Coming to Tea Upon Chatsworth is an experience worth the visit, the delicious teas, sandwiches, soups, scones and cakes pair very beautifully with the true experience of afternoon or high tea. I encourage everyone to take time out of their busy lives, to come to Tea Upon Chatsworth, relish the relaxed, unhurried atmosphere and savor the delicious treats. You will definitely leave not only feeling satiated and satisfied, but surprisingly, well rested as if you've taken a little mini-vacation to another world.

I just ate here with my girlfriend this Monday and had a wonderful time. We had High Tea which includes a good amount of portioned out sandwhiches, scones and dessert(s). One sandwich we ate had fresh edible flowers in it which was surprisingly tasty. You receive two scones which were very small and not warm. They are served with the sandwiches and desserts so you don't have a chance to enjoy them first (or last). However, it seems to work out though because you do end up getting fairly full by the time you reach for the scone. But for those of us who are used to big, warm scones served before or after the sandy's should be aware how they come to the table. Otherwise, the atmosphere was busy. The service just a tad slow however I've been here before and that just seems to be how it goes-so just give yourself plenty of time to enjoy your tea time (as you should!) and you won't leave here frustrated. I keep coming back to try the seasonal menus (as they change every 3 mo's I think) and always look forward to what the owner has in store next. On this menu, the chilled melon soup is such a relief from the warm weather outside! Once again, a visit well worth the trip!

Extremely well done. I love Tea Upon Chatsworth. Upon entering, you experience a clear transition from the world outside into a meticulous interior environment. Elegant yet casual, perfect room temperature, music is just right, and the smell of fresh-baked scones is incredible. Good tea selection and tea is prepared well. My wife and I have been for High Tea and Cream Tea, and never once have I left hungry. Compare this with most other options in San Diego and you will realize how much of a gem this place really is. The food is always fresh and care has obviously been taken in its preparation. We will continue to go back.

Tasty food and very good tea, but way overpriced. I had a chipped tea cup to boot. Service very friendly, but $50 (includes tip) for two people to have tea? Yes I understand it's not supposed to be a 'meal' - but then why charge 'meal' prices?

I feel bad that other reviews recently have been poor! I brought my mother for high tea (we have gone to other teas, and let me tell you, the price was great in comparison!). We were greeted warmly; the servers were very polite and the mango soup was delicious! No, there isn't a huge amount of food, but there isn't supposed to be! It should be about atmosphere and tea (which was wonderful) and we left full anyway. We were asked if any of us were vegetarians before the tier was brought out. The hot food was hot(something that has been lacking at other tea places lately) and very fresh. The owner does not just 'throw together a sandwhich and cut it into fours'. The quality of food was excellent. The desserts were not excessive, but after the pots of tea we drank, excessive was not needed. I have had the sad experience of paying a lot more for high tea with mediocre results. We will be going to tea many more times at this establishment. I'm just sorry that some people have had a bad experience. Maybe you just hit a bad spell?

I have been here twice and thought that the tea was excellent and the food was good, but the price was a bit much. Both times we had high tea. The portions are tiny. It was cute and I know it's tea, but come on, on our dessert tray, for the fruit part, we each got half a strawberry. On our second visit, we had finished our sandwiches and were told that we can have more if we would like since it was the last sitting, but when we asked for more, the server said that we could not have them anymore because a couple of her 'regulars' just walked in unexpectedly and were given the other sandwiches. How hard is it to make another sandwich and cut it into fours. Considering we had reservations and were paying an exorbitant amt., we felt unimportant and felt that the owner and our server did not seem to care about us since we did not come as often as her other customers. Tea room could do so much better if the owner didn't cater to just her regulars. I also recommend reservations, we saw people walking in, and even though it was slow and there was no one else in the tea room, they were turned away. I'm assuming it was because the owner doesn't have enough sense to plan ahead or make allowances for walk ins.

This was my first experience with an English style teahouse. Closest thing I've visited is an English Pub drinking unpasturarized ale and venison sausage on overstuffed couches. All the variaties of teas we tried were delicious and well served. The watercress soup was delicious and the variety of dainty sandwiches, scones and cakes were a delight to see as well as devour. This is not an in and out diner or coffee shop. This is a place to spend a couple of hours with friends and or family. Portions are small but the carbs are high :~) We all ordered High Tea and had a High Time.

Last Sunday I visited Tea Upon Chatsworth for the third time in six months. It was amazing as usual. The menu changes with the seasons and the chef always uses the freshest, seasonally appropriate ingredients. I first tried Tea Upon Chatsworth about six months ago when my sister was in town visiting. She is a tea connoisseur and now, every time she visits, she wants to go back. I have recommended this place to several friends and everyone has loved it and continues to go back to try the new menus. Last Sunday, we tried so many great teas and a blueberry tisane which we all ended up buying. There were so many teas to choose from but I think we chose a great variety. The food was excellent as always. I am always impressed by the artistry and the perfect combination of flavors from savory to sweet. No two things are alike so every item is unique and delicious. The chef also always uses edible fresh flowers which makes the tea platters beautiful but also unique. The tea ended with a mocha bomb which was about the best bite of sweetness I've ever had! The waitress is so charming, poised and informative. She truly makes us feel pampered every time we come. We had a chance to talk to the chef during and after the tea and you can tell, this is really her passion. It's obvious from every detail that this is a labor of love for her. I will definitely go back every time the menu changes!

My mom had just come home from a 36 day cruise and I wanted to do something special with her. I called this tea house to make a reservation for two on a Sunday (when they only offer their special manu). Since I am on a medical diet, I am only allowed to have liquids, so I let her know that only my mom would be dining and I would just have a pot of tea. First she wanted to know 'what diet I was on' and then Joy decided that she could not accomodate my request because the weekends were when she recouperated her money. I thought...how stupid. If I would normally buy her $20 tea meal, and instead today I was only buying a $5 pot of tea, she was prepared to turn away a full paying customer and future business for a difference of $15??? How shallow. She finally saw my point and said 'Well, I guess I can accomodate you.' I said that it wouldn't be necessary. She knew I was angry. About 45 minutes later, she did call me back and apologize in a message (she gave me a bunch of excuses why she couldn't make the right decision...on the phone, customers waiting, etc). It was nice of her to call, but the damage was already done. This was a dietary accomodation just like asking for no peanuts (due to allergies) or not to prepare something with sugar (diabetic). I was throughly disappointed with her lack of compassion and ability to accomodate this very special need. Too bad for her tea house...since I am on liquids only, tea is one of the only things I can have! Tea houses are where I can take friends and not feel leftout of 'eating.' I would have probably been a recurring customer who would have made many referrals. Customer service is key in any business! So, this would not be the place for you if you have any special accomodations or want great customer service, this is probably not the right place to have tea. Lucky for me, I found this out without even visiting the tea house!

We recently made a visit to this tea room. We have been there several times in the past. Although the food is always delicious, I must agree with the last reviewer that the service is terrible. We've experienced this during our last two visits, when the small tea room was fully booked. The two waitresses are really what needs to change at this tearoom. They are cordial enough, but show absolutely no warmth whatsover. They didn't even welcome us when we came in the door. They basically bring you the menu, take your order, and that is it. I will say that there were several very specific details of our visit that were bothersome. First, service is very slow. We were left waiting for a very long time. When the server brought the water to the table, she did not even pour it into our glasses. The same thing with the tea. We poured our own tea. This has never been the case at any other tearoom we have visited. Next, after we were finished with our soup, no one ever came to take our dirty soup cups. Even when they brought our tray of food, they still left our dirty soup cups in front of us. We had to set them aside ourselves, and they remained on our table throughout our tea experience. When the tray of food came, the waitress said that she forgot the cream for our scones. The scones are served warm, and are delicious when you are able to eat them warm. Unfortunately we did not get to experience eating them warm, because 20 minutes elapsed before we were ever brought our cream. We had literally eaten all of our sandwiches, AND dessert, before our waitress finally came back with the cream - after two requests for the cream. This is truly unacceptable. Perhaps they can just make sure they add a cup of the cream onto the tray, as a rule, so that the servers do not forget, since it's obvioulsy an issue. When you go to a tea room, it is just as much about the ambiance and overall experience, as it is about the quality of the food. This is what the owner needs to focus on and change. Tea upon Chatsworth has excellent food, but because of the overall service experience, you don't leave with a feeling of anticipation to come back. I still recommend that you try this tearoom, as the owner, Joy, is absolutely wonderful, and she takes much pride in the food that she prepares. It would be nice if she could teach others how to prepare her delicous savories, so that she could be hostessing / serving her clientele. Or, she needs to find other servers, who are genuine, kind, warm, and who pride themselves on exceptional customer service. As it is right now, this is not the case. Go to tea upon chatsworth for the food and tea....you will not be disappointed. And hopefully when you do, the service will have greatly improved.

A friend and I had a conference to attend in San Diego and while looking for other tearooms to visit I found this one. I have toured San Diego tearooms before, but this was not open on my last visit to San Diego. I am from out of state. This was such a wonderful find!!! They have the biggest selection of tea choices I have ever seen in a tearoom. I tried the House Blend and enjoyed it very much. The atmosphere took us away to a different place and time, and we liked the table setting very much. Our server was attentive, and very helpful. I had spoken with Joy, the owner a couple of times before our visit, and it was delight to meet her in person. The food was delicious and quite filling. We did not need to eat dinner that night! The fall menu was quite good with the standard fare, as well as some special things like the pumpkin bread with orange butter. We finished off with some gingerbread ice cream that very different, and extremely tasty. Our overall experience is one that we kept discussing throughout our time in San Diego and I think was the highlight of our whole trip. I can't wait until I have another opportunity to go to San Diego to experience this tearoom again. It was marvelous!

My friends and I had tea on the 19th of November and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food was creative and very tasty and Joy, the owner, was the best host we have had. We try to have tea in the Orange County area at least once a month and this was our first venture to the San Diego area. We'll be back. Thanks, Joy, for a wonderful experience.

On Sept. 17 , I took my 9 year old Granddaughter to her first Afternoon Tea at Tea Upon Chatsworth. What a fabulous introduction to this wonderful tradition for a young lady . The food was scrumptuous , and the tea divine. Wonderful atmosphere for she and I to talk and enjoy our afternoon togeather. We were so impressed that we have decided it will be a monthly tradition for us .Cheers to Joy for making this so special for Lily and I.

I am a lover of tea houses and after my first visit to Tea Upon Chatworth back in June, I have found my favorite. Joy Walsh has provided this community with a wonderful tea room and the most delicious delicacies. My friends and I meet there for a sort of 'happy hour' at least one Friday a month now. It's a great place to unwind and leave the craziness of everyday life at the door. It is also a great way to take a mental health break for lunch during the work week.

I have now been to this tea room twice and thoroughly enjoyed both times. Joy is a gem and such a hard worker. When you walk in through the door, you can smell a fantasticly romantic aroma that can only come from tea. Joy's baked goods mingle in the air vying for your senses' attention. The place is small, but very cute and neat. The decor is tastefully done. Her clotted cream and rose petal jam is to die for! I can't forget her lushes scones -- hot and fresh from the oven. I highly recommend this tea room to anyone!

This tea house is pure delight! Our senses were ignited as soon as we entered the door….Ready? The aroma of baked goods was heavenly. The tasteful décor was every bit charming, with careful detail visible on every corner. Classical music allowed for a nice chat with my girlfriend. The servers were friendly and gave us the right amount of attention. : ) Most of all, the food was oh…….JOY! Yummy sandwiches, savory treats and homemade desserts with blueberry tea bursting with flavor…La vie en rose at Tea Upon Chatsworth.

Wonderful! What a geat addition to San Diego's finest. Every aspect of this tea was a delight, including the owner, Joy, who came by to introduce herself, and ask how everything was. The personal touch is obvious from the moment you arrive. The food was amazing- very creative treats!

What a fabulous tea experience! Joy's love and knowledge of a traditional high tea manifests itself in every detail of both the room and the food. Every morsel is homemade - even down to the rose petal jam, which was delicious! We were able to sample many different teas, and will try more next time. Our experience was personalized, so we really felt at home. Compared to other tea rooms, Tea Upon Chatsworth is tops!

My friend and I had an absolutely delightful afternoon at Tea Upon Chatsworth. The tea room is beautiful and cozy, all at the same time. We felt comfortable and very much at home, as the atmosphere is very welcoming. Joy, the owner, bakes all of the items herself, and everything we ate was to die for. Everything we ate seemed to become our new favorite. The tea sandwiches were amazing, with my extra special favorites being the tomato and swiss cheese tart and the stilton, walnut, and pear sandwich. Joy's scones are the best we have had, and her rose petal jam is unbelievable, and like no other. The shortbread was also another favorite...just perfect. Joy and our server Julie were so pleasant and helpful. We tried 5 different teas, and they were all delicious. The tea selection is very good, and it was so nice that Joy and Julie were incredibly accomodating, allowing us to try all the various teas we chose. They brought out different teapots every time, which made our experience extra special. My friend and I have been frequenting tea rooms throughout San Diego, and recently as often as every weekend...and we agree that our exprience at Tea Upon Chatsworth is the absolute best. We cannot wait to go back!!! Very Charming!!!

After discovering Tea Upon Chatsworth on this website, my girlfriends and I met here on a recent visit to San Diego. We were blown away by how wonderful this tea house is! The staff was so friendly and accomodating for us. The tea and food were divine! Especially the savory herb scone! If time permitted, we were going to go again the next day! I am so glad that we found this wonderful place and am already planning my next trip to San Diego to visit Tea Upon Chatsworth again!

In my previous review I expressed the displeasure my best friend and I had at our visit to this tea room. I would like to unequivocally state that our trip today was an excellent one. The service was great and the food was exceptional. One of the best tea adventures we have ever had. Thank you.

Having visited this tea room twice with my granddaughter Stacy (see previous review), I knew my Red Hats would enjoy it immensely. So, we drove down to San Diego (from Seal Beach - a two-hour drive) on Memorial Day weekend. Every one of my friends were totally impressed and want to make the drive again. They agree with me that this is one of the best teas we have ever experienced. Joy goes out of her way to come up with unique menus that please and delight the most experienced tea-goers. After having paid $45.00 (plus $150 for a room) at the well known Empress Hotel in Victoria, Canada, I must say that I think Joy's tea has it beat. (I would even go so far as to recommend that should you find yourself in the Victoria area, that you pass the Empress and enjoy the less expensive and bigger tea served at Bushard Gardens.) Of course, you can always save yourself the trip, and enjoy Tea Upon Chatsworth instead. You may find yourself going back again only one week later -- as I am planning on doing this weekend. This must be the best kept secret in California! The attendants are friendly, helpful, and are second only to the wonderful menu items. The apricot tea is an absolute keeper and the blueberry-laced ice water is a treat. The ambience of the room is accentuated by an antique shop just adjacent and is perfect to make your visit a special one. We were visiting from Texas and this is one place to take your wife. Courtesy abound - don't miss this establishment.

What a wonderful way to spend Mother's Day, with my two daughters and their Mother-in-laws. Beautiful atmosphere, very accommodating, a wonderful selection of tea sandwichs, desserts and teas. The Herb scone was to die for and the Rose Petal Jam was extraordinary to go with Chatsworth Scone and cream. Thank you for the wonderful day with my daughters. 5/9/05 Susie Riverside
