Always an enjoyable treat to visit over and over again. Be sure to make reservations because it is a small place and often can be filled even during weekdays. Food, tea and service are excellent.

I went to the English Rose with my mom, sister and niece, for my niece's 6th birthday. The tea room is charming, with a sort of French/English garden theme to the decor. We enjoyed the food, the staff made a fuss over my niece, and our experience was very relaxing and fun. The only issue we had was when I went to buy a tin of their signature tea -- a rose-scented black tea blend called, appropriately, The English Rose -- and discovered that they only take cash and credit cards as payment. Other than that, if I lived in the area, I'd definitely be back!

The English Rose will charm you from the moment you walk in the door! The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable and they can help you navigate the extensive list of teas offered. They change their food menu seasonally and I have always been pleased with the selection. I have been enjoying this tea room for over 5 years and will continue to enjoy the English Rose for years to come!

My mom and I go to this wonderful tea room several times a year. The food is always very tasty, there is a wide variety of teas to choose from, and the service is consistently fantastic! Add to that the lovely decor and you have the perfect tea time!

A very pleasant environment. Great tea variety. The food was good and service is attentive. On the weekend service they opened 5 minutes late took 5-10 minutes to seat us and then we felt rushed as we overheard we had to be out by 12:45pm. for their next seating. Suggestion open a few minutes early to seat the guests and let them relax. Tea should not be rushed.

The English Rose is by far the most lovely, and relaxing restaurant I've ever been to. The staff is so friendly and kind. They are always ready to cater to your needs. There are so many different teas to choose from and there's something for everyone. The food is displayed so beautifully too! On a tier, sandwiches are on the bottom, savories and fruit in the middle, and desserts and scones on top. The atmosphere is so beautiful and doll like. Not to say men shouldn't come here, but it's very girly. But there aren't enough places like this, so who cares? I bring my friends and family here and we are always so blessed. Come the English Rose!

Every time I've come here for tea, I always leave feeling replenished. It isn't just the abundance of delicious food or the never-ending pots of incredible tea that are served, but more so the loving atmosphere created by the warm servers and hostess that make the English Rose such a special place. The last person I brought here for tea was my sweet grandmother who has since passed away, and what a wonderful memory I have now of spending a day at tea with her. I will of course be coming to the English Rose soon!

I absolutely love this place! It is so beautiful and all of the servers are so thoughtful and attentive. The food is delicious and beautifully prepared! There is a very large selection of teas, over 90!!! And they let you get unlimited tea so you can try as many as you want! I love everything about this place!

This is my favorite tea house! There is a very relaxing and quaint atmosphere, and the ladies who work there are so polite and generous. I always feel very welcomed when I go there, and although it's a bit expensive, it's definitely worth it! Everyone there makes you feel very special, whether it's for a certain occasion or just to have a cup of tea!

I have enjoyed several tea houses throughout California. This by far was unfortunately the WORST tea house. My expectations after reading all the great reviews was severly disappointing. On Saturdays, you are required to order their Queen's tea for $26. Their presentation was a mess; the tiers were not organized by savory, sandwiches & sweets. Rather, it was strewn about the trays. The scone was horrible - it looked & tasted like a biscuit. Finger sandwiches were a joke - bread with a swipe of 'filling'. The sweets tasted horrible as though they were purchased at a grocery store, taken out of package, and placed on the tray. I took one bite and stopped. Very, very disappointing. Their tea was good as well as the variety offered. Their employees were very curteous as well. Ambiance overall was overwhelmingly embellished; definitely sexist in that it is aimed towards women & girls only. Do yourself a favor: use the money you plan to spend here & have a fabulous lunch in one of the many other great restaurants downtown Pleasanton has to offer.

I felt very uncomfortable I think we had the smallest table there and there were more tables than floor space. it was way over priced for sandwiches that were just thrown together. I have no idea why it is ranked so high.

I went to The English Rose for my birthday. They had a wonderful variety of tea on the menu and tea of the day. The English Rose had many different price options. I liked that. I had the queens tea. I was quite disappointed with the quality of food. The tea sandwiches looked as if who ever made them was in a hurry. The tea sandwiches had very little filling. A swipe of egg salad on the bread is an overstatement. The staff made my birthday wonderful. Not sure if I will go back.

I went with a few of my friends today, and we LOVED it!! And that's saying a lot, coming from a girl who HATED tea until today. Their blends and varieties are delicious, the food is tasty, and the entire environment is great, from the decor to the silverware and cups/saucers/teapots. Everyone who works there is incredibly sweet and made the experience that much more fun (particularly Jennifer and Lisa)! My friends and I enjoyed ourselves immensely and can't wait to come back :)

My mother and I decided to go to tea on Friday at The English Rose Tea Room in Pleasanton. It was a tropical themed tea day. The decor, tea and snacks were in a tropical theme. We enjoyed the extra special details from the tropical theme and thought the staff were wonderful. I would suggest this place to anyone who loves tea or just wants a fun girls day out. Thanks for a great day!

The English Rose is the essence of its name. Like the beauty of a rose unfolding, this tea room experience unfolds beauty, joy, and care in all of its details. The ambiance is a quaint and warm place to spend with friends or family. The service truly desires to serve you with genuine and sincere joy. (No one could ask for a better server than ours, tinkerbell). The food is incredibly delicious down to every tea sandwich and cake. And of course, the tea was wonderful! The English Rose would be a treat for anyone present. I highly recommend it!

What a beautiful place to have tea! My daughter and I shared a lovely birthday tea. Everything was just perfect and the staff made us feel so warm and welcome. The food was excellent. They were very accomodating to our vegetarian lifestyle, which we truly appreciated. We were served a lovely almond sugar cookie tea for a sample, along with a delicious cookie. It was so delicious, even my daughter, who doesn't usually like hot tea, enjoyed every sip. We were then treated to warm fragrant hand towels and just felt so pampered. There is a huge selection of teas, any of which can be made iced. We both chose the strawberry kiwi herbal, which was excellent and neither one of us required any sweetner. The service was impecable... thank you, Jules! She is a treasure and was such a sweetheart. She even brought us out a couple adorable little petit fours with a candle in celebration of our birthdays. She also offered to pray for us, which meant so much! We were also touched by the sweet personal note on our check. Oh, and we were given a pump of creamy hand lotion after we were finished dining, such luxury! This is by far our favorite tea room and we will definitely be back.

I've have been to tea rooms before but this is by FAR the best I have been to. The staff is incredibly welcoming and treated us like queens ! Every detail about our service seemed to have been carefully thought through- from the warm hand towels to the unlimited teas to the personal note on our check! The owner and servers truly cared about serving us to their best ability and we felt very loved. Not to mention the food was DELICIOUS and beautifully displayed. I will be coming back very soon. I would highly recommend visiting this tea room!

I have been to the tea room many times and part of the reason I keep coming back is the environment! I love coming on weekdays especially- I never feel rushed and I can sit back and relax without the worry of formal seating times. Weekends are a whole different story! Saturdays are a different kind of experience- a lot busier, louder, and there are most definitely formal seating times. Saturdays are more the days where I bring my friends for a birthday party or something- weekdays are just for me or even better with a friend for a quiet, intimate tea time. The other nice thing is that there are splatterings of religion instead of being an' in your face' type establishment. If you want prayer or religion- you know it's there but you aren't pushed to have any religious beliefs. It kinda shows the strength of the owner to be able to have a place that she can freely state what she believes instead of hiding it. All in all, the english rose is an amazing place to eat or relax or have a nice get together with friends! I love having it here in town so that I can stop in during the week whenever I want!

Very disappointed, we expected an absolutely outstanding Tea House, instead this is a gift shop serving Tea. Can not understand how it is listed in the Great Tea Rooms of America, maybe because the author is a personal friend of the owner. Very crowded with nick naks for sale and only average in food quality and presentation. Nothing much else local for competition and we didn't appreciate their religion thrown in our face either. Stick to keepsakes for sale not religion.

They all blessed us and now I feel so much closer to God. It was really something special to experience. I can certainly tell you it is the perfect place to go with a couple of your girlfriends. Our visit was okay but very disappointing compared to all the other reviews. We felt we were being rushed from the moment we sat down, even though we had reservations. Our tea took a very long time to arrive and was overly bitter from the start. When we asked for new flavors of tea we were given heavy sighs and rolling of the eyes. From that time forward we kept our mouths shut and tried our best to still have a good time.

I've been to The English Rose often enough to know I'm always ready to go back! I have never been disappointed. I once made reservations for an intimate bridal shower, and our waitress made sure the bride-to-be received special attention. Whether I'm there to spend time with my daughters or friends, each and every experience is always an absolute pleasure. The staff is cordial, attentive and personable, and they take the time to answer any questions you may have in regards to the food or tea. The owner Lisa, is always ready to greet you with a smile and tend your your specific needs, whether it's your first time or a return visit. Good food, wonderful ambience, and excellent service...what more can one ask for?! I highly recommend this tea room for the ultimate experience in the heart of Pleasanton's downtown.

“What kind of tea would you like today?” Well, isn’t that a loaded question. The variety of tea at English Rose Tea Room is abundant. And it’s one of the many reasons I wholeheartedly love this place. Black, oolong, green, white, flavored, and herbal & fruit infusion – your choice is plentiful. And I’d be remiss to forget the seasonal teas. You can mix & match your pot of teas, which is great because a lot of tea rooms make you stick to just one pot per person. Luckily they sell the teas, so you can go home with a bag (or two) of your favorite loose leaf tea. There are three different menus: Lady Lavender’s Elegant Cream Tea [scones & tea], The Duchess Anne’s Delightful Tea [tea sammiches, scones, fresh fruit, tea], and the ultimate experience – and by far the best – The Queen’s Sumptuous Afternoon Tea [tea sammiches, petit fours, scones, fresh fruit, variety of sweets, tea]. The Queen’s tea is the only menu served on the weekends, and the only one I’ve tried. There’s also a children’s menu, the presence of which I find quite endearing. I visit the tea room several times a year. And every time, we never leave disappointed. Their teas are always brewed perfectly and all of their food is delicious and homemade. Their scones are to die for. Oh, those scones! Perfectly baked and served with clotted cream, lemon curd and strawberry preserves. Absolute perfection. The whole room is lit up and wonderfully decorated. The tables, chairs, and pillows are charming and the whole place makes you feel cozy and darling. Lisa and her staff are so warm and friendly. Very accommodating and always make us feel at home. There are events going on every month or so, and they even offer children’s etiquette classes. I love the experience of Tea Time. And English Rose is my go-to place when I feel like a cup o’ tea. People often get dressed up, in cocktail dresses and tea hats. Over the years, I’m constantly amazed at the people and events that frequent this place. Friends reacquainting, moms & daughters laughing, grandmothers recounting stories of their youth, a group of ladies gathering for a friend’s bachelorette, the list goes on.. The English Rose is an adorable and charming tea room. Warm your belly AND your heart in just one visit. I'm a fan of two-fers.. ;-)

We never leave disappointed from The English Rose. Their teas are always brewed perfectly and all of their food is delicious and homemade. We love having Carol as our server. She makes us feel special and couldn't be any kinder. The owner, Lisa, always stops by our table to say hi and makes sure we have everything we need. The room is decorated beautifully with antiques and unique shabby sheek items. I always leave feeling so relaxed and refreshed! Needless to say, I love this place and highly recommend it, even to the fussiest of tea drinkers.

There are few places that mimic the feeing of home quite like The English Rose. I've been lucky enough to have been coming here for years, and still take a moment or two to soak in exactly what is happening in this shop right before my eyes during any given visit. People are learning each other, friends reacquainting, mothers and daughters laughing, grandmothers telling stories, husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, each sipping the warm tea that so perfectly mimics the warmth of the Rose's atmosphere. At the risk of sounding slightly obsessed, I'm in love. This place warms people from deep within, and just as the pink hues of an English Rose look alive and well, people come here not only for the excellent tea, food, and service, but to quite literally be re-awakened to the simple pleasures we so often overlook. I highly, highly, recommended it.

I was never much of a tea drinker until I stepped foot in The English Rose. The entire atmosphere was so charming that I couldn't help but fall in love with it's shabby-chic personality. The food was delicious, the service was adorable, and the over all environment brought me back to my childhood imagination, as Alice would join me in 'Wonderland'. I wouldn't mind marveling at their tea every Saturday afternoon!

My daughter and I go to tea quite often, and the English Rose is our favorite place to go. The time we go to tea is our connecting time, and the staff at the English Rose always make our time together very special. Lisa the owner always says a special hello to us that makes us feel very welcome. The tea and snacks are wonderful! We always get the Queen's Tea which has a great assortment of goodies and a wonderful assortment of tea's. Thanks Lisa for making a special place for us to go and drift away from the cares of the world in downtown Pleasanton.

Our server Kath was exceptional, courteous and gladly served us who asked for several tea pots. We had English Rose, Lavender, Raspberry, and Celebration tea. Not to forget, the food were GREAT..not like other kind of tea room. Love all of them! Overall it was a lovely experience and will definitely go back! The owner, Liza is very hospitable and inspiring too.

A dear friend took me to English Rose Tea Room as a birthday gift. We had the Queen's tea and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although they had a wonderful selection of teas, we opted for the tea special of the day, which was a great blend of tea with vanilla and cinnamon accent, which they called Snickerdoodle. The food was yummy and beautifully presented. Our server was friendly, helpful, and attentive. I look forward to returning with more friends!

Lisa and staff always provide an experience of thoughtfulness, kindness, attention to detail, beauty, variety of delicious foods and teas, and the feeling that you are a special person and deserve special care. Carol is such a sweet waitress. She greets you as if you are her very best friend and instantly creates fun and tlc. I love all the little perks...warm, scented washcloths at the start of the service, lovely lotion at the end. Complimentary tastings of highlighted teas. A yummy sugar cookie waiting on your tea saucer to hold you over until your tied-tray of beautifully arranged, flower adorned sweet and savories arrive. The food is amazing, expertly prepared by chef Barbara who is so creative at blending tastes and preparing interesting menus. Everything is always fresh and delicious. Fantastic variety of teas available. The setting is so pretty, inside the shop and outside in the garden. I've enjoyed many special events at the English Rose, many happy memories. The most recent was to celebrate a dear friend's birthday. She was so surprised when Carol came with a darling birthday surprise..a personalized mini birthday cake with candle and a hand-written message spelled out in frosting on her plate. It was so sweet! What a blessing. I highly recommend you visit the English Rose and enjoy this special place and people.

I have been to the English Rose with my daughter several times, including for her sixth and seventh birdays just as a nice time with her mom. I have been to two other tea rooms in California (San Francisco and Sacramento), and the English Rose is the very best tea room I have experienced. The room inside is beautifully decorated without being cluttered. When you walk in, you feel like you have stepped into a very special place. Everything is clean and nicely presented. The outdoor seating is comfortable and charming. Best of all is the quality of the good and the tea. All of the food is prepared in the kitchen. The teas are fresh and perfectly brewed, and you can try as many teas as you want from their extensive list. The savory and sweet selections that accompany the tea are all delicious, fresh, and nicely presented on proper afternoon tea serviceware. Of course, the scones are delicious and are always served with fresh jams, lemon curd, and clotted cream. The English Rose also has teas for children. With the children's tea comes a marshmallow sandwich, or PBJ, or marshmallw-peanut butter sandwich that is shaped like a rose with a red rose or butterfly stamp or picture on the top of the bread (food coloring). Also included is a good, balanced combination of fresh and dried fruits, cookies and petit fours, nuts, scones and clotted cream and jams. This makes coming to the English Rose with adults and young children a fun event for all. The owner is also very kind and cheerful, as are the staff. I highly recommend the English Rose.

The English Rose is by far the best tea room I have ever been to! I go there at least two to three times a month and I have no complaints. The food is phenomenal. Each bite I take is a piece of heaven in my mouth. The sandwiches, savories and desserts are the best I have had at any tea room. I love all the different varieties of teas. Their English Rose blend is my favorite. It smells so fresh and tastes even better. The service there is incredible. Each and every server is so unique, gentle, caring, and always smiling. It is obvious they really enjoy working there and treat their customers extremely well. The owner, Lisa, is one of the sweetest ladies I have ever met. She has decorated the tea room so nicely. The entire tea room and bathroom is elegantly filled with roses and other flowers. I went for Mother's Day tea on Saturday with my children and husband. I couldn't have had a better day. We were able to sit in the lovely garden and were treated very nicely. I highly recommend this tea room! Went with my friend this week. A lovely tea, but did notice it is in need of a little facelift, walls chipping, pretty little design as you enter rubbing off, menu's soiled and worn. The quaint, traditional tea room is just off the main drag of historic downtown Pleasanton and is a picture of shabby chic. I remembered visiting before, and I just had to stop in again while in town on business. Lisa greeted me warmly as I entered and gave me my pick of tables. I chose an overstuffed chair off to the side, and Laura took over, offering me a sample of their apricot tea and a gingersnap. The tea list was pleasantly lengthy, and Laura was happy to give recommendations and opinions. I was tempted by the Wild Cherry, but when I mentioned I was not a fan of overly fruity teas, she gently suggested some other potentially palatable options. In the end, I lapsed into my comfort zone and chose a French Breakfast blend. I ordered the Duchess Anna menu, and was delighted at the beautiful tiered serving tray that was presented. A scone, fluted cup of dried fruit, an orange slice and red rose sat on top. Below were the requisite cucumber mint sandwich and egg salad sandwich. A new addition to the winter menu were a corn and rice salad in puff pastry, a open-faced pimento and cheese sandwich and a twist on bruschetta: Monterey jack, tomato and apricot atop the crusty bread. Barbara, the tea room’s chef, came out to say hello and see how I was enjoying everything. It was such a hospitable environment, I felt like a visiting dignitary. But it quickly became apparent that there was nothing unusual about this treatment. I saw it displayed again and again not only with customers dropping in, but also on the phone. Everyone was greeted with enthusiasm, and the message is clear: All are welcome here.

The food here is very good, as reported--I think it's the only time I've ever had a petit-four that tasted good as well as being cute! They provided a vegetarian option as requested. The Victorian decor and gifts are darling and appropriate, though with rather a lot of little 'churchy' touches that left me feeling somewhat bemused. Would an atheist have little decorative plaques in their tea shop saying 'There is no God'? Or perhaps a tea cozy embroidered with 'Darwin was Right?' It's all a matter of taste, of course. And it's true, there is not a great assortment of black teas. Most of the many tea selections are flavored teas, which I always think of as aimed at the non-tea drinker. The 'Lover's Leap' black tea blend recommended by our server was delicious, however, and as long as there's one, that may be enough. Also, they will provide an alternate selection if the tea you ordered is not to your liking.

The love and joy the owner and staff have for serving their customers is awesome. Many wonderful teas, with tastings of the tea of the day. If you are and ex-pat. from Canada, Britian or just love real tea, you'll love how they prepare theirs. The food is wonderful, with many comfort standbys, real scones and cream, and neat new takes. I especially love their cucumber sandwiches and petit fours. Make sure you save time to look at all the Victorian gifts that line one wall. Sometimes theirs products from local artists.

The English Rose makes for a great afternoon. The service is wonderful and being able to try as many types of tea is great. It is a relaxing afternoon where you don't feel rushed. I have been twice and both visits were wonderful. I have been to another english tea place in the East Bay and they can't even compete. Take your friends, sisters, cousins, moms...all will enjoy.

WE have a group of a dozen ladies that are going to the English Rose Tea Room about once a month. It is a lovely atmosphere and the food and service is excellent. We have discussed moving our get together to other places for variety but everyone is so comfortable and happy with our experience here that we have elected to continue to come here - it is definitely a favorite.

Again, a visit to The English Rose! Another outstanding experience! I dropped in to visit with a friend and while she was busy taking care of business, I met the most wonderful woman and her daughter who drove from Brentwood, my home town, for tea and mother/daughter time! Wonderful food, tea and atomsphere whether you go with friends or alone, you always feel welcome! Thank you to all who serve and make it an experience!

I have been going to this tea room for years now and I always find it to be a comforting place to go back to. With excellent service and a cozy environment I find myself falling in love with the English Rose more and more every time I visit. They have a wide selection of teas for you to choose from and each person is able to choose any pot of tea they would like. The food, though delicate and light, will enhance the tea experience and leave you feeling satisfied. Lisa and her staff have dedicated themselves to finding the best teas and savories from all over the world. It really is a wonderful experience all around. If you are looking for a pleasant place to get together with friends, an afternoon of tea with someone special, or a great gift for any occasion the English Rose is definitely the place to consider!

I absolutely loved the English Rose! The atmosphere was warm, inviting, and relaxing. The selection of tea was wonderful--I especially love Lover's Leap. The food was artful and delicious... the service, friendly, and attentive. I brought two small children with me and the staff went out of their way to provide them with a fun experience as well! The children were given darling little plates with peanut butter and marshmallow cream sandwiches cut in the shape of flowers-- it was so cute! Overall, l I considered The English Rose to be a lovely experience--a delight to the senses! I can't wait to go back!

There will never be any other place like the English Rose. This tea house welcomes you with beautiful decor and an inviting atmosphere. Most of all, the owner has done a phenominal job at staffing the mose pleasant and cheerful servers. The tea menu wonderful and the food is delicious. I frequent the tea house with my mother and girlfriends and would reccomend it to anyone looking for a special place to enjoy life over a cup (or pot :)) of tea.

I have had the privilege to have tea here many times and have always been greeted with warmth and grace and been served with the most gracious servers. You are never rushed out and are left feeling relaxed and refreshed from your time spent at The English Rose. Take a moment to step back in time and sip on one of the 40+ tea choices as you nibble on delicacies from their menu. I am planning to host my mother's retirement celebration here next month. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea in a most feminine and warm atmosphere. The owner could not have been more gracious or accommodating with all of our requests and queries in preparing for our special event. Our server, Miss Karen was also quite personable although the first lady that cleared our table was somewhat cold when I thanked her. To be fair, my mother asked to sit at the only spot in the entire tea room that needed to be cleared and set (it had the most comfortable looking wingback chairs). We are certainly looking fwd to returning and sharing this delightful experience with our friends and family soon.

While in San Francisco this weekend I drove out to this Tea House, I agree with Ashley 08/30/09 I was also surprised at the rating, it was just average thus my rating, glass table tops and the atmosphere is just mediocre. The table next to us (which could have been part of our group as it was so close to us) told us all the church cronies come. I was very disappointed and could have had a nicer Tea at one of the hotels in the city where we stayed. Not worth the effort we put into driving the distance.

As a man entering the realm of 'the English Rose,' I will say that I was very comfortable being the only 'XY' in the room. I am not a tea afficianado as many of the women around me were, but the list they had was as long as my arm - I tried some tea that tasted like snickerdoodles! Snickerdoodles! It was delicious! The food was fresh and very tasty, and the atmosphere was very inviting! Even the chairs were comfortable! From a man's perspective, my tea experience was even better than Richard Gere's performance in 'Runaway Bride.' Oh ya, and my girlfriend LOVED it!! Bonus points!

The food and preparation was lovely, and the service was nice. There was little room and I felt that for a tea house there wasn't much variety in the tea choices. Also the general atmosphere was mediocre, I am very surprised at the rating. Perhaps all the great reviews are from church cronies?

This tea room is BY FAR the best we have been to outside of England. I took my best friend of 25 years here for her birthday after reading all the wonderful reviews. First off, we were greeted by our lovely and friendly server, Maria. She poured us ice water infused with lemon and oranges. YUM!!! Who knew water could taste so delightful. We were then offered a sample of their featured tea: Today's blend with Snickerdoodle, a mixture of cinnamon and french vanilla. While enjoying this first cup of tea we were given a delicious ginger snap cookie. What a great way to start off the celebration! With the help of our knowledgeable server, we ordered the Queen's Tea with their signature 'English Rose Tea.' It was an aromatic blend of Chinese Black Tea, Essential Rose Oil and even real rose petals!! Before the food arrived, we were treated with warm lavender scented hand towel to prepare us for the delectable finger foods ahead. The food included everything from traditional tea sandwiches to fresh fruit and freshly baked warm scones. Their homemade lemon curd was heavenly! :) Before we knew it, 2 hours had passed and we were chatting with the owner, Lisa. What a lovely woman! To top it all off they brought my friend an adorable dessert topped with a lit candle with her name written in pink edible icing while the entire tea room sung 'Happy Birthday' (on key). What a perfect way to celebrate my best friends birthday!

LIke many men when you mention going out my first thought is not that of a Tea Room. However, my wife loves them. We have been to a large number of Tea Room in the greater Bay Area and in so doing she has built in me an appreciation for the 'art' of Tea. As I reflect on the many Tea Rooms we have visited The English Rose stands out as my favorite. Excellent food, a good variety of teas and excellent unrushed service in a beautiful, calm setting. I have recomended it to a number of my friends and co-workers both male and female. My wife as well recommends this Tea Room and has treated a number of her friends to the experience. All agree they are excellent.

My mother & I enjoy visiting different tea rooms, this one was recommended to me recently, both of us were very disappointed. We arrived on time for our reservation at 11am as we drove up the gal was just putting out their sign, I figured good we can go right in. As I walked my 81yr old mother to the front door to enter we were surprised that the gal had relocked the door and made us wait out side for about 8min. before she return to unlock the door. We were seated and our server came to take our order. She was very nice, told us about their new sparkling white tea which at the time made no mention of an extra charge so we were under the impression you could have this instead of the pot of tea, I elected to have this it was very good but I was surprised to find a $5 charge on the bill, it would have been nice to have known before hand, although I would have had it anyway but it was annoying. Next I had to ask for clean cups both of our cups had tea remains from the previous patron, that was very unpleasant. The decor was cute, the service was just ok not very friendly (although there and a young gal who seem to perk up the place serving another table with a very cheerful attitude). The food was average nothing overly exciting. I have to admit with our experience today I am surprised that this tea room is rated #1 out of the #299 listed. We had just frequented the August Tea Room in Livermore & Numi in Oakland and there is no comparison! They were both a much better experience. Overall we will not return to The English Rose Tea Room nor recommend it. Sorry just didn't feel we got our monies worth compared to other tea rooms we've been to and truly enjoyed

My mom and I have visited the store several times and cannot seem to get enough of it! What an exceptional experience! I'm an extreme tea lover! Three years ago I had to go on a permanent wheat-free/gluten-free diet. This meant no tea sandwhiches or scones. Finding a tea house that offered menu alternatives has been very challenging. The English Rose went out of their way to provide a different menu just for me, including a beautiful salad and for the first time, tea sandwhiches made with gluten-free bread! I was so touched by their personal attention. I would have been completely satisfied with the salad, but serving me gluten-free tea sandwiches was over the top. I surprised Maggie this week with another special mom and daughter visit to fill in the corners of her spring break. She was so giddy! Laura and Karen took wonderful care of us, giving us our choice of seats (Maggie picked a cosy corner for the two of us). The food and tea are delicious, service impeccable and cheerful. Also, both of us being 'tomboys' are not always comfortable in 'too frilly' or Victorian surroundings, but The English Rose is cheerful, bright and made us feel like special girls! Karen. Laura and Lisa made sure everything was satisfactory and treated Maggie and I with utmost care. A very special place to enjoy tea, treats and creating special memories.

The tearoom is a place to sit back and relax for lovely conversation with a friend over a pot of calming tea and tasty delicacies. The ambiance is dainty and welcoming. One definitely feels pampered by the endearing service. I think I want to bring my mom here for Mother's day!

Loved this tea house and would definitely go again. Very quaint location in downtown Pleasanton, interior decorated in the cutest pink, dolls, flowers, card shop motif; Lots of teas to choose from. Set menu, when my niece and I visited on a saturday. People were very courteous and nice. Not rushed. It was so relaxing and enjoyable! Not a tea snob, so definitely enjoyable for any age or gender or ethnicity to walk in and feel pampered.

My family and friends planned my Bridal Shower at the English Rose. We had such an amazing time! The tea was absolutely delicious and there were so many different kinds to choose from. I have had tea at many different places and I usually always leave still hungry. They had the perfect amount of food on the tray to satisfy my hunger and also my tastebuds. My favorites were the warm scone, and the feta and carmelized onion puff. I highly recommend the English Rose for any kind of party or function...or even just for the heck of it!

We met at The English Rose and were delighted with the delicate beauty of the tea room. The scent of roses and tea enveloped us immediately and created an atmosphere of elegance and relaxation. Our server appeared immediately and offered detailed information about the daily specials. The tea was exceptional and there was a varied selection. The tasty treats were thoughtfully prepared and included fruit, nuts, dainty sandwiches, and unique cakes. Our group of three anticipated a chance to connect and were extremely pleased with our overall experience.

We went here to celebrate a birthday because they were rated #1 and were not disappointed! The presentation of the food was exceptional and we really liked the'champagne of teas'. The extra little touches of tea of the day samples, towels to wash with before the meal and lotion afterwards were also neat and unusual. the whole air was one of relaxation and coziness. liked the background music also. Lastly,we very much appreciated and enjoyed the Christian atmosphere-very uplifting!

You would think a quiet place for an intimate tea may be hard to find here in the Valley, especially one with superb service, friendly staff and incredible food! Incorrect! The English Rose in Pleasanton is still my favorite pick of any place I've been. I'm not joking when I say this includes the great tea cafés in Australia or in Boston, MA! Yes, I've been there and while they're nice, something's missing! That something is 'the atmosphere' you find at the English Rose. There is a peace and tranquility present there that is indescribable. The tea treats are always changing and surprising and wonderful every time I've been. The food is never boring and you feel pampered by their staff. There's no interruptions, yet your server is always gracious and there when you need. Top marks to you all at The English Rose! I'll be back at any opportunity - hope that's very soon!

The staff was amazingly inviting and gracious to all the guests. The food was delicious from the savory quiches and tea sandwiches to the sweet desserts and fruit. Our tea was always replenished and the choices were wonderful! I highly recommend this tea room for any special occasion! I also would recommend going there for a quiet and relaxing afternoon for no other reason than to treat yourself. You will walk away blessed!

I actually live in Los Angeles and am so excited that I am in Pleasanton right now, so that I can visit The English Rose. Fortunately, when I am in Los Angeles, I am able to take The English Rose's loose tea home with me to enjoy. Of course, it is not as perfect as when I am there enjoying their wonderful atmosphere and exceptional service. The ladies who work there are so friendly and genuinely nice.

I have traveled to England numerous times and have visited more tea rooms than I can possibly count--from Fortnum & Mason to Harrods to the little tea rooms of the Cotswold villages-- and I can honestly say that Pleasanton's own English Rose is at the top of my list. My mom and I celebrated her birthday there today and had a wonderful afternoon tea. Our server, Hope, was as sweet and helpful as she could be, and each savoury and sweet delicacy was scrumptious. We particularly loved the cucumber sandwich with a minted chutney spread and the chicken salad with a hint of curry on a croissant. Oh yum! Can't wait to go back.

A friend gave my daughter a baby shower at The English Rose last weekend. What a perfect place to celebrate the upcoming birth of a baby girl! I cannot say enough about the tea room. The food, the service, the inviting atmosphere, the decor-----all went into making the event absolutely magical! I have been to the tea room before and have always been pleased but many people in attendance at the shower were experiencing it for the first time and I have received many calls saying they can't wait to return. After reading all the good reviews of this place, I decided to try it out with my daughters and was very dissappointed with the whole thing! the servers (high school students??) weren't very friendly, sat us in a small round table there was only one other table that was occupied in the whole place! Chair cushion was very uncomfortable and I asked to switch it. Scones were terrible, really plain serve with very little preserves, cream and lemon curd, Tea was very weak, it wasn't even loose tea!I wasted my time and money in this place. Will never ever go there again! I wonder what was all the great reviews about this place anyway!

Although there was an obvious difficulty with our reservation, they quickly made it possible for us to enjoy the afternoon of Queen's Tea Service! I was cheerily given a gift certificat in recognition of the difficulties of the reservation process; what superb customer service! As a result, I have invited my mother and (hopefully) my future mother-in-law, to afternoon high tea during Mother's Day weekend at The English Rose. Had it not been for the conscientious service, and recognition of the unfortunate overbooking (obvious testimony to its popularity!), I would not return. However, I am most excited to do so, and to introduce my mother and (hoped for)future mother-in-law to a most enchanting time on 5/9/09. This is an enchanting place and a most memorable vist for anyone who enjoys superb tea and exemplary service!

I went to the English Rose by myself on a weekday afternoon to enjoy a nice quiet lunch. The tea was exquisite, as well as the service. Decor feminine and elegant. I was the only non-Caucasian lady in there, but was treated with kindness. The scone was delicious! The only complaint I have is that the sandwiches and food selection are small. I had the Duchess Anna's Tea plate (mid-size) and it didn't fill me up like food at other tea houses had. I would suggest adding another sandwich or two to the meals.

The food was really good the atmosphere was inviting. I would definitely go again. The best part about my experience was the food. Yum! The second, but equal quality that charmed me was the wonderful staff that was very kind and thoughtful to my guest and me. I was not rushed and I felt very relaxed and enjoyed myself. My grandaughter,Bryce who is 4 years old, and I went to The English Rose Tea Room, for the first time, to enjoy afternoon tea. The service was excellent, the food delicious, and the manager and staff were so friendly. When we arrived and were seated, my grandaughter looked around and said, 'Oh Lala, this place is so beautiful, it looks like a marriage place.' Some ladies were celebrating a birthday, and were wearing lovely tea hats. They had an extra one and offered it to Bryce. She was overwhelmed and put on the hat immediately! I felt badly because I had forgotten my camera, and could not take her picture. However, just a few minutes later, the manager, who was so friendly, asked if her friend, who was a professional photographer, and who happened to be having tea that day, could take Bryce's picture. We were so excited and happy that we would have pictures to remember our very special time at the tea room. The tea room is beautifully decorated and there is just a feeling of welcoming and warmth. I was so fortunate to enjoy this intimate experience with my grandaughter. A special thanks to everyone at The English Rose Tea Room! We definately will return again!

I have been to many tea houses and have come away with an ok experience. I haven't had an experience at a tea house other than The English Rose where I can truly say the entire experience has been satisfying. The English Rose has been a great place for me to take friends and family for special events or to just have a girls day. Each time I have attended the experience has been consistant. I have never had a bad experience. The service, presentations of tea and food have all been wonderful. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. My friends and I regularly gather at the English Rose for tea and conversation. I like to visit the tea room with my sisters too. We all enjoy it every time. It never disappoints. The decor is charming - feminine and romantic. Teas are varied and delicious and the wait staff very anxious to brew it exactly to your liking. I like mine rather strong and that is just how it came to the table. The savories are yummy - delicate tea sandwiches, unique little pastry cups, nuts, fruit - all lovely. The sweets are plentiful; from melt-in-your-mouth scones (served with Devon cream, jam and lemon curd) to heart-shaped cookies to petite fours. All served on a beautifully deccorated, tiered tray including lacy paper doillies and fresh roses. The staff are warm, friendly, welcoming and sweetly determined to make your experience in their tea room an exceptional one. My friends and I have already booked our next visit to the English Rose. The distinctive character of The English Rose makes for a truly delightful tea room experience. The Victorian Parlor setting is an enchanting decor, whimsical, yet intimate. There is a calming influence created by a bouquet of fragrant aromas from the savories & varieties of global teas. My personal favorite is the 'Queen's Sumptuous Afternoon Tea' with family & friends but I have often been welcomed in to read a book, sip on a Strawberry Kiwi Tea (iced in the summer), & be satisfied with a warm scone with splendid Lemon Curd & Clotted Cream. The loving staff is attentive & knowledgeable, the menu modifies with the “optimal selections” for each season, & I can trust that with each return experience, I will find a place of refuge. Thank you for making your home in Downtown Pleasanton & giving me a place where sweet memories continue to be created.

This was not my first afternoon tea experience, so I am reviewing this tea room as a comparison to the others. It was our first visit to this tea room, and we ordered the Queens's tea. - Although not an extensive list, there were enough tea selections in each category such as black tea, herbal/fruit,...etc to chose from and it was not overwhelming. We asked our waitress for suggestions for tea to match with our food - it was a good selection. - I agree with Stephanie's comments on the food. However, I gave 'excellent' rating, because the overall taste was good. There was not a disappointing item. I do love the veggie bruschetta! Love the lemon curd & cream for the scones. - Table arrangement & presentation of the food is lovely. The table was little small for the two people. - Our waitress is amiable & spoke to us for a little bit. Other staff are very cheery. The tea room is very cute. Everything looked brand new. The tea room is off Main street in Pleasanton. It is located in corner side of a modern looking building, but when you step into the tea room. It is a totally different wonderful world. The English Rose Tea Room is a great place for special occassions: good tea, lovely presentation, comfortable enviroment, and down-to-earth staff, very very lovely decorations. I will definitely back with my daughters.

Over the December holidays I had tea at the English Rose and was stunned to see that the Saturday holiday tea cost $28/person. That is $5 more than the normal Saturday tea. I would have been okay with the price if there was something additional provided, but the only changes were ambrosia as the first course and a different type of dessert. Not quite worth five additional dollars. Plus, the service on that particular day wasn’t very good. Normally, the service is exceptional, but on this visit we felt somewhat neglected. As much as I always enjoy having tea at the English Rose, I will have to reconsider going again during the holiday season.

The tea shop is a nice experience but the tables are so small everyone has to choose one tea. There are not enough room on the table for individual choices. The food is good but not outstanding. Service is good but the place is small and can get noisy. It is a bit too frou-frou in decor to bring a male.

Who doesn't love a tearoom? This one is even better than the others and truly worth a visit. The perfect place for heart-to-heart talks. I've gone there with girlfriends and you feel like a little girl in a dream! My most favorite memory of going there though was for my daughter's 16th birthday for which they FAR EXCEEDED my dreams. We sat on a little love seat next to each other, they wrote Happy Birthday on the flower plate in chocolate, had beautiful flowers, etc. Thank you!

My children and I love going to tea at the English Rose. Most recently we took my grandmother for Christmas tea. She loved it, too! You feel like a queen the moment you sit down as you are greeted with warm, scented hand towels. The decor and atmosphere are beautifully done in sage green and rose pink. Lisa and her staff are warm and attentive. The food is tasty from the savories to the warm scones and lemon curd. We were impressed by the presentation. It is a local treasure!

After having been to tea in various locations, including Victoria B.C, Atlanta, GA, and Dallas, TX, I returned to the English Rose Tearoom because it remains my favorite. Not only the decor, the food and the teas are excellent, the presentation and service are wonderful well. The servers couldn't be nicer, and I enjoy experiencing the new teas they offer, and purchasing some to take back to friends. Return trips to CA will definitely include a visit to the English Rose.

The English Rose is beyond wonderful. Today we had our office Christmas party and the service was outstanding. This is the third large party I have planned with The English Rose and each time I walk away feeling Blessed because the food is yummy, the tea is soothing and abundant and the time spent with family and friends feels me with JOY! Being there makes us all feel like true Ladies and it seems to make all the problems in the world go away. I loved The English Rose so much the first time I went in that I painted my home the same colors, so in essences when I go there it is like going home. The English Rose is one of my all time favorite places! We discovered this great little escape a few years ago with my Mother's Group. Between 3 of us we have 7 sons (no daughters) and very little opportunity for ourselves much less time to be 'girlie'. The English Rose has become our place to get together, reconnect and feel fabulous all while drinking delicious tea and eating delightful finger foods and desserts. We love the special touches they add to the menu around the holidays and the little indulgences that are there year round like warm, lavender scented towels and lotion to moisturize with after your meal. We consider ourselves 'regulars' and make sure to never let more than a month or so pass without making another appointment. I would recommend The English Rose to anyone, any age, any gender.

The staff is always wonderful, very kind and helpful and very knowledgeable about the teas and the menu. The food is very good. There is a new menu about every month. It includes tea sandwiches, small tarts, fresh fruit and wonderful small sweets, including petit fours. We usually go around lunchtime and always leave well satisfied. The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxing. The decor is adorable, lots of pink and roses, always fresh roses on the tables and the food servers. I'm a big high tea person and have high expectations when it comes to having high tea. We recently we able to stop at The English Rose to enjoy an afternoon of tea. The decor is cute very English. They have a nice selection of teas. The walls were a bit scuffed (paint completely gone) from people rubbing their chairs up against the wall. We were warmly greeted when we arrived and our table was ready and waiting for us. On Saturday's you can only get the Queens Tea which is $23.00 per person. This is a full service tea which is what I always get when going to high tea however I've never seen it be a required or only option to guests. They have a pretty generous tea selection the only thing I didn't like is most tea houses will give you a description of the teas especially if they have a 'house tea'. All their teas are printed out on a laminated card at your table. Bit on the un-elegant side but I guess it's economical for them. The sandwiches were standard tea fare. I wasn't fond of the burrito type sandwich but the others were standard for high tea (cucumber, egg salad) I liked the Caesar one which was new to me. My friend and I didn't like the quiches they seemed to be overcooked and didn't taste all that good. Seemed to us that they were not fresh possibly frozen item heated for service? Not sure. The one big complaint I have is their scones. Scones are the highlight of tea, and if you are going to import your Devonshire creme from England you should think about importing some scones. I have NEVER had scones that looked and tasted more like Pillsbury biscuits. I was extremely disappointed in the scones. They should definitely rethink the scones! I did like that they provided fresh fruit on the platter and I liked the nuts/craisons that was a nice touch. We received lavender towels before our tea service, and lotion after. Overall it was a lovely tea service, they are extremely friendly and have great presentation. I would definitely go back and would recommend to others.

Two lady friends and I drove from the Vally to take tea at The English Rose Tea Shop. We found the salon, gift area and outside patio beautifully appointed and decorated in chic European style! It was the first time since London, that we took tea at a settee and armed chairs with low tea table (instead of a dining table with chairs - delightful! Lynn and her knowledgeable staff were attentive, friendly and knowledgeable! We enjoyed our loose leaf teas very much. I had the house blend and found it to be a particularly good blend of black teas. We ordered the Queen's Tea and were a little taken aback that the savories were a spicy chorizo pocket, a spicy Mexican bean mixture in a cone burrito and one of the sandwiches was an Aram rollup filled with bland rice and avocado?! We found these selections incongruent with the otherwise lovely 'English' Tea experience here. We recommend the Duchess Anna's Tea (without the savories) and will try it and the lovelky patio on next excursion!

Loved everything except the food -- who serves chorizo puffs at a british tea shop?! Also the scones were more like biscuits. On the plus side, the lemon curd was good and the rest of the food was adequate.

The English Rose is a charming place for an afternoon tea. You will feel pampered as soon as you enter the door. All the serving pieces were elegantly arranged with a bouquet of red roses in the center of the table. We ordered the “Queen’s Tea” and were amazed at the selection. The scones were absolutely heavenly served hot and fresh with clotted cream, lemon curd, and a delicious berry jam. The dainty sandwiches and quiches left our taste buds dancing with delight. We were amazed at the variety and sumptuous selection of desserts. The servers were attentive to our every need, and definitely made us feel like “Queens for a Day.”

What more could you want from a tearoom? The outside is adorable, which draws you in. Inside there is beauty everywhere you look. Fresh flowers on the table. Beautiful tableware, excellent service with extra touches that make one feel pampered. The food is always fresh and delicious and served with flair. No detail is overlooked. The bathroom is clean with pretty things in it. We have been to many tearooms. This is by far the very best. We love it here. Thank you for giving us The English Rose. We always leave uplifted.

I am never disappointed when I go for tea at the English Rose. Hands down my absolute favorite respite for tea in the entire Bay Area. Beautiful table settings and presentation, creative and delicious food offerings, and a joy every time I go there. I can't recommend it highly enough. I do wish that they offered ALL of their teas (for purchase) in tins...it's getting a little old having the tea that I buy there be put in a paper bag.

After booking a small bridal shower, I was barely allowed to enter the tea room 5 minutes early in order to place the favors and place cards on our table! I had to drag my bags and cart around the corner, through a patio and in the side door! We were served our tea right away, but the food wasn't served until 40 minutes after our reservation time, and then (after being given 'the look' several times by the staff) we were asked to 'hurry up' with the opening of gifts because they had to have our table for other reservations! After speaking to the owner/manager, we were allowed to finish our party. There were only two ladies who entered the tea room before we left...what happened to those 'other reservations?' The food was adequate, teas were nice, but we were crammed into a corner where two small round tables were pushed together, and the service was extremely poor. Even though this tea room is lovely to look at through the windows, it is lacking in atmosphere, comfort, and service. My most recent tea experience was a baby shower at August Tea Room in Livermore, where we were treated like royalty in a very comfortable, lovely atmosphere. What a difference! It takes more than tea to make a tea room experience pleasant.

This tiny tea room lacks the charm and friendliness I would have hoped for. After being ignored at the door for a while, the 4 of us were given a tiny table that should have been for two people. Everything would not fit on our table, so we had to choose only 2 teas to share. Our server was inexperienced and unable to give much information about the teas. The food was decent, but nothing exceptional and lacked variey. When visiting Pleasanton from Stirlingshire Scotland I spent a happy afternoon at The English Rose Tea Room. It was very apparent from the moment I entered that Lisa and her team have worked very hard to create a warm and welcoming, beautiful and spritual oasis of calm. I am so happy that Pleasanton has a little place like this. I've been a regular for two years, and bring with me or refer anybody I possibly can. The only thing that I have been disappointed in is that somewhere alone the line, the price for the Queen's Tea didn't increase, but the number of savories did. Nonetheless, I enjoy going each month to see what the new menu is. As for Lisa's christian theme and support for a pregnancy center, I fail to understand how any educated, well-bred individual who is not a bigot or hypocrite can claim to be 'offended.' Also, you cannot with honesty and integrity say that you are 'pro-choice' when what you are objecting to is a choice that some girls and women have made to proceed with a pregnancy. Clearly that is a no-choice-but-abortion individual parading about as a 'pro choice' individual. Hmmmm...like a wolves among sheep? Get over yourself. People that decide to continue with an unplanned pregnancy and see it through for themselves or see it through to adoption are entitled to that choice rather than choosing abortion, and they need just as much, or more, loving, kind support as those who enter those locations who tell you that they are safe places for making a choice, but when you walk in, there is actually only one choice. The place is a tea room, for crying out loud, not a political forum. The owner has simply been kind and generous enough to donate funds to a group who actually are helping people. There's no force, no implied 'donation required'. I've never been approached there--the statement that some of the profits help Shepherd's gate is there for you to know. Big deal.

Like many people who visit this site, I enjoy having tea many times a year and at different places. I think this is the prettiest tea house that I have visited. I liked the seating areas that they have arranged, I didn't feel that it was crowded, although it may be for large groups. The service was fantastic and the food was good. I was a little dissapointed with the tea. My friend and I both chose teas that had a strange aftertaste. We didn't complain because it wasn't a big deal. It was enjoyable, just not as delicious as some places. Our server asked if we needed re-fills and asked if we wanted to try a different tea. We chose a different tea and noticed the odd flavor again. I don't know if it is a storage issue, the brand of tea, the nature of the teas we chose or something else. I definately enjoyed the opportunity to try different teas - I actually tried four teas in all. I feel the tea is the most important part of the experience, so that aspect was a disspointment, but overall I thought this place was great and I would go back without hesitation.

5/3/07 Took wife to tea to celebrate 38 years of marriage. Been to many tea rooms with her and have enjoyed most. I must say the English Rose was a most enjoyable time, second only to tea in Hawaii. Food was excellant! The service great. Servers very friendly and upbeat. The English Rose takes time to learn about their customers and seem to enjoy making them feel special.Even tried to find a 'Manly' tea pot for me. Also we were served little cakes with lite candles at the end of our tea to help us celebrate our anniversary. It's the litle extras like this that make the tea experiance! I will recommend it everyone I know, including my mocho male friends.

The atmosphere, food, and tea were wonderful at this tearoom. However, two customer-unfriendly policies are prompting me to write this review. When we called to make our reservation, we were told that parties of 6 or more had to guarantee the required number of guests. So if any guests failed to show up, the others would be responsible. When we polled our group of busy moms, we realized only 4 or 5 might be able to attend. So we made a reservation for 5. Only 4 of us made it. We were told that we were responsible for paying for the 5th person. We were not too upset as we would be able to take home the food of the 5th person. We felt relaxed and unconcerned as we waited an hour for food to arrive (40 minutes after our last guest arrived). However, at 12:45 (we had arrived at 11 am), we were told that we had to vacate our table by 1 pm. A suggestion of sitting at a garden table was made but servers frantically began taking the tea tray and cups out of our hands. So fast that I could barely grab any of the extra food to take home-- that we had to pay for due to the no-show. Perhaps if they had let us know at 11 am that we had to go by 1 pm, it would have been less jarring? It just seems that I have never been under these kinds of pressures (guaranteeing a party number of having to leave by a certain time) at other tearooms or restaurants.

I must say, in going to The English Rose I have never been treated so well. The English Rose is a small little tea room in downtown Pleasanton, and believe me, it’s a jewel to Pleasanton. When you walk in you are greeted with a friendly hello, and smile. Now I have been to The English Rose three times now (soon to be four because my daughters are taking me there for mothers day; to say the least I am very excited), and I have never had to wait for a seat, and all three times I was a ‘walk-in’. You are pampered while your there, first with lavender scented hand towels all the way to the end with I believe is called ‘white tea’ hand lotion, which smelled truly amazing( I’m trying to find the lotion in stores, no luck though). There are so many teas to choose from. There house tea, The English Rose Blend is truly delectable. The first time I went I truly felt like I was in England even down to my waiter who had an English accent, She was a doll and knew all the questions I asked. All and all The English Rose is a treat to yourself and others. Each time I go a new memory is made. The English Rose brings proof to the saying of ‘Big Things Come In Small Packages’, it’s a small little place yet it has a big place in my heart, and the heart of others.

As an owner of a Tea establishment I often visit my competitors tearooms and read the reviews they receive on teamap. I just want to say thank you to the last comment made by Anne Hartwell for a truly honest review. The English Rose is a gem! The owner and her staff are all very professional and make you feel special. The food is original and creative, and the tea selection is one of the best. When this tea room originally opened, I actually cried because I was afraid of the competition the English Rose would bring. Luckily, the competition has not hurt my tea business at all... I think it has inspired people to have tea more often and try other places. This is the tearoom I go to when I am not serving tea to my customers... It's small but intimate, and you feel like you have truly treated yourself to something special.

We had tea at the English Rose today after reading the sometimes glowing, sometimes odd reviews. May I say how impressed my friend and I were with this tea house. My girlfriend and I have been doing tea in the Bay Area for 2 years. We try a new tea house or hotel high tea every 3 months. Some have been great, some are not so great. I can't believe my girlfriend and I didn't try the Rose sooner. (We live in San Francisco.) The Rose is a GEM among tea houses. Here are some of the highlights: Tea and cookies are offered on a table while you wait to be seated. A very nice touch. They also offer a tea of the day for free. Yes, it is a rather 'cramped' tea house compared to most, but it was also very quaint and cozy. The waitresses seem to be more 'aware' of your needs because the room is small. The food was bountiful. So much so, that my girlfriend and I took some home. It was absolutely delicious. We had the Queen Tea (I believe it was called) which included a very tender scone, hot savories, grapes, sandwiches and a wide variety of desserts. The cost was $20. They have less expensive choices. They offered a nice variety of teas and what we ordered was delicious. My girlfriend had a rose tea that was very good, even though I'm not into food items that are rose flavored. There are also items for sale that are quite lovely and reasonably priced. There was jewelry, cards, a small selection of teapots and cups, and various other 'pretties.' Both my girlfriend and I have decided we will be back to the English Rose next time, since we were told they change their menu. We have never tried a tea house twice, which indicates how superb the Rose was.

WOULD YOU ALL PLEASE STOP WITH THE RELIGIOUS COMMENTS!!!! I don't personally know the owner...I don't even care about the owner...I don't care about religion, but I will say this...THE ENGLISH ROSE IS THE BEST!!!!! TRADER JOES? Sorry, but you're WRONG!!! I've been coming here for tea for 2 years and the menu is always different, always inventive. I shop at Trader Joe's once a week and if they sold her stuff at Trader Joe's, I'd be buying it myself. The tea is deliciously prepared. The staff can be friendly at times, stuffy at others. It just depends on who is there during the week/weekend. I have been to tea so many places in the Bay Area and the English Rose is, by far, the best. Forget the crazy people who ramble on about pro-life, pro-choice and all that other crazy stuff. Go to the English Rose. If you stop shopping at every place where the owner supports something you don't agree with...heck, you'll be back to the olden days of making your own clothes, tilling your own soil and dying from small pox because you're too afraid to go to the doctor who is Muslim!!

All political and religious (or not) aspects aside, this place ROCKS! If you don't appreciate the biz owner's expression of free speech, then you have every right not to frequent this establishment. Btw, I consider myself spiritual, NOT religious (haven't stepped foot in a church in years) and am very much pro-choice. However, I also choose to enjoy my tea here. (Since when is it offensive to display your appreciation/love towards God, in your own place no less, anyhow?) Great variety of yummy teas, finger foods were not stellar but, fine overall. Space is tight but, the charm is abundant. I've been to this particular tea room 3x in the last year and have yet to experience the hint of bad service. Though it is - in my opinion - pricey, I would definitely recommend this place ..

My mother always said' don't bring religious beliefs to the work plaace' maybe the owners of this tea room should take her advice. When you openly flaunt your pro-life views to the public, then you must face the outcome. I can not support a restaurant that openly supports something that I know is wrong. (How many of you would go to a tea house that was pro Nazi?) Her food is pruchase at places like Trader Joes, it is over priced and not very fresh. Nothing is made on site. The tea room is full of too many tables and not enough space. The owner comes on as the Queen Bee with a better than you attitude. I will not return and I will make sure my friends don't give her any business. Maybe if she left her pro-life views at the fron door and concentrated on serving tea she would have a better turn out. Their are far to many tea roon to have to put up with her pro-life views.

I actually have not visited this tearoom myself, but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all of the reviews! I think it is hilarious that we worry so much about supporting a business that supports a cause that we don't agree with! Do you ask everyone you buy something from what their political and moral beliefs are? Or do you only notice and get offended when they have the boldness to proclaim a belief? Tea room reviews should only include 'tea room stuff'.

My mother and I are not the least bit religious and didn't find the English Rose's owner imposing her beliefs in any way. I will not be returning to this establishment. Wait service is good, professional and knowledgable, food was good, but the seating is cramped and uncomfortable. We had reserved a spot for 8 people to enjoy an early afternoon tea this past weekend, six from in town and 2 were my fiancee's aunts that were flying in from Boston-we were to be celebrating one their birthdays there. They were supposed to come in form Boston on Friday but, due to the snow storm, their flight was CANCELLED and they would not be able to make it for their yearly visit til much later, including this tea that Saturday. We still had the reservation and didn't want to bail out entirely because we had to give a cc number (over 6) so we went and explained what happened to whom, i think, is the owner of this place. My mother asked if she would still charge us for 8 and she was told yes-those were the rules. I found the answer unacceptable and went back to bring this issue up again and was responded with wishy washy 'well, the cook make food for that many people' and 'of course i understand...' who knows what else she said-but being a CHRISTIAN place- i thought she understood and would realize this was not a happy, preventable time for us and not charge us for it too. My soon to be mother-in-law ended up paying for all 8 services. They gave us a doggy bag full of food we had already had enough of. In a way i'm glad it was only six of us sitting at the 'large seating' because that was very cramped as was-imagine all 8! Fitting all our 'queens tea' orders on the table was like trying to work a puzzle-move one peice so the other fits. And the only tea service choice you have on the weekends is the 'queens tea', which is of course the most expensive. By the end of the sitting I found it overdone and was completely soured on the whole experience. I will not be returning-I found this experience extremely hypocritical.

All computers have it. The English Rose has not imposed their beliefs on anyone nor have they expressed having a political agenda for any laws you must follow. It’s rather ironic, you say you were planning on booking a female family tea, I guess it’s a good thing your mother didn’t have the same beliefs as you so adamantly express or you might not have ever been born?

What a wonderful experience we had at this tea room. The decor and ambiance was breathtaking and my daughter's felt so special with all the attention from the delightful staff. We had the Passion Fruit tea and the Winter Wonderland tea. They were both delicious. My youngest daughter enjoyed both the Passion Fruit and the Kiwi Strawberry teas. The food was tasty although I wish there were more of the tea sandwiches on the tray. I still loved it. The gift shop had a wonderful selection of collectable pieces though some of the prices were a bit steep. I thought it was worth it to spend a little for a small souvenir to add to my memories collection. I must disagree with some of the viewers in regards to the owner's religious beliefs, etc. I did not feel that she was preaching or pushing her beliefs on to her customers. She may have a few things up that mention Jesus and she writes 'Thank you & God Bless you' on the bill but that is not preaching. OK, would you ban going to a Thai restaurant because they have a Buddah statue and Thai verses throughout the place just because you are not a Buddist? See how that sounds ridiculous? Enough said. Many thanks to Lisa and her staff for a very pleasant and memorable visit. We will be back.

I tried to stop in, decidedly not dressed for the occasion, but my purpose was to inquire about making a reservation for my mother's visit the next weekend. I was not permitted to step foot within the premises (I seriously didn't even get the door fully open), but was ushered to the sidewalk as though someone was afraid that my no-makeup-and-blue-jean cooties might contaminate the empty tea room. I did not appreciate being treated like an uncouth version of Eliza Doolittle, so my money and myself will be going elsewhere.

I Love the fact that the owner celebrates her Christian belief! It is soooo refreshing to not only enjoy an afternoon of tea, but to also feel that there is a business owner out there who will celebrate their Christian religion by sharing it, even though it is done so innocently. This tea room is great....very elegant and charming!

I make reservations and took my Mom to tea when she came to visit me. We had the Queen's Tea and loved everything about it!! We each chose our own pot of tea and the food was exquisite on it's 3-tiered serving plates. We took breaks from eating to peruse the adorable gifts and enjoy the atmosphere...we felt so pampered and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our experience. I am taking my boss out to tea as a Christmas gift and I can't think of any place nicer! I would recommend this place to everyone!!

The place looks great! They have a wonderful selection of teas and the food is good, the Queen's Tea is a must. It's the best tea house so far that I have been in. Just a side comment on people who are offended by her affiliation with the crisis pregnancy center and showing her faith and religious beliefs....if anyone who walks in an asian restaurant and sees an image of Buddha, do they feel like they're beeing preached to also? I don't think so. I admire what she does for the pregnancy center, I'm a Pro-Lifer because I believe that life is not a choice...it's a gift, either if they keep the child or choose adoption, that life is a gift to someone. The owner is obviously Pro-Life also, but the 'pro-choice' people should not be offended because she is helping women who 'chose' to have their baby. If the people who call themselves 'pro-choice' are respectful of their own belief then they should at least respect the owners wishes by helping those who 'chose' to have this life in their womb to continue. My father left us while I was still in the womb(with 2 older siblings) and he wanted me aborted, my mom wouldn't even think of it, and I thank her and GOD for that. God bless you all.

The service was good. The food wasn't made in house and tasted very average. Over priced. I will not be back. I go to tea house for tea, not to support the anti-choice movement. I will pass the word along so my other friends will not support this tea house. The tea house was almost empty. Maybe if she left her anti-choice pregnancy beliefs at home her business would be better.

I have been to a dozen or so teahouses over the years. I took my mother here for her birthday celebration and the tea and service were good. However, upon looking at the menu I noticed that the owner states that a part of her proceeds goes to the Valley Pregnancy Center. This is a center run by members of the conservative, Christian, anti-choice movement. As a woman who believes in a woman's right to privacy and a woman's right for reproductive freedom, I can not go back there nor recommend it. I will not knowlingly give my money to a woman on the board of director's of a anti-choice 'pregnancy' center. I also didn't appreciate the bible passages on the menu. I go to tea to have fun, relax, and enjoy the company of others, not to be preached to.

Having tea at The English Rose was a wonderful experience. A group of 6 of us went for a birthday and we all enjoyed ourselves. After reading some of the comments from others I think that the someone took note. Because of that I felt our group benefited. We had fabulous service (although I have to mention there were only 2 other groups there). She took her time and made sure everything was to our liking. Other highlights include the hot lavendar scented towel prior to the meal (I haven't been to a tea place that provided this so that was a treat!), the music was perfect for the occasion, the quiche, the decor was lovely, and she went around the table w/ lotion after the meal. The overall experience was memorable and I will definately consider this place for future parties. Having to provide the deposit was something I hadn't done for the other tea parties I've thrown, but it is a small quaint place so I understand the percaution they take for cancellations.

I have visited many tea rooms. This one was the best so far. My mother and I were doing a tea tour/ road trip and last minute decided on this one as our last. Saved the best for last. Loved the quint decor and the servie, very good. Best of all, the food was unique and fresh and delicious. I do not know if we just got lucky or if they are consistent. Check this one out. We may convince our large group to visit there, it is a long drive from Sacramento, but it would be an adventure. Locals, you need to check it out. Debbie from Folsom

I have visited over 20 tearooms in my travels, and this one was ordinary. The shop is very cute, but extremely cluttered, small and crowded. Our table for 4 was so small that we couldn't fit everything on it and had to only get 2 pots of tea. The service and food were ok, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I stumbled on the English Rose quite by accident and took my daughter to celebrate an impromptu early birthday. We did not have a reservation, but the staff was absolutely gracious and very attentive. Our server (a very cute 'English Rose' herself) was just darling - very knowledgable about the products and helpful with choices. We loved our special time and found the tea tray goodies excellent. My daughter is a big fan of things pink, so we just fell in love with the charming decor! We went back a week later and had an equally pleasant time and, even though the house was completely full, our service, food and the teas were perfect!! We will be very often going to enjoy this special spot!!

I really enjoyed my time here, but the food was not exceptional. The sandwiches were average, one being plain turkey lunch meat. (Even a slice of tomato would have made it seem a little more special) Overall, the people were very friendly, the service was excellent, the tea was very enjoyable and I really had a nice time. I would certainly go back, but would know what to expect... unless the menu changes.

I used to be a regular customer at the English Rose but on the last visit I was treated so rudely that I vowed never to go back. When I called to make a reservation for a workday luncheon, they only offered the times of 11:00am and 1:00pm as the seating times, and would not allow me to make a noon reservation, so I went with 1pm. I figured that if I got there a little early, they would seat me as long as there was an open table. I was taking my boss there, and it was a very important luncheon. We arrived at 12:30pm, and I had called ahead and said we were going to be early and if it was possible to get a table sooner than 1:00pm. When I arrived, I was mortified to find that they could not find my reservation, and they would not seat us, even though there were 4 open tables. No apologies, nothing, they almost completely ignored me! I would have thought that given the fact that I went there so often they knew me by name, that they would try to work it out. Finally they said that they would seat us at 1pm if we wanted to wait. I figured at this point that by the time it would take us to find a new location, park etc it would just about 1pm anyway, so we decided to wait. However, as they had 4 open tables and everyone else was finshing up, I didnt understand whay we had to wait. Finally they found my reservation-they had written my name down incorrectly-and I was horrified to see in the reservation book that I was the only resevation for 1:00pm!!!! Once they found my reservation they went ahead and seated us a few minutes early. I could understand all this if they were packed solid and trying to work it out, but given the fact they had no other reservations and they treated us like we were a big inconvience to be there. I would have expected better period, but considering the fact that I was a regular customer and I was bringing a new person there, I would have expected to be treated with more respect. As far as the food, I have always found it to be filling. The teas are not very good though-they all seem to have a smoky, cheap flavor to them.

I visited the English Rose today, though it is quite girly and pretty, beauty is only skin deep in the case of this tea room. I found the heart of the english rose to be empty. Our server was rude and unfriendly, and when I pay 100$ deposit and a 300$ bill for some teabags and finger food I expect to be treated like the Queen of England! I have vistied many tearooms and was very dissapointed in the lack of flexability, honor and communication. I will not visit this tea room again.

We went there as a group of 10, for our Mother's Day tea. When we made the reservation 6 weeks ago, we had it reserved for 12 but things happen & 2 ladies couldn't show, we had to put down $100 deposit, unheard of with any tea house we have visited in years past, and were not told we didn't have a choice of food selection until we called a few days before hand. We did get a selection of tea, 2 pots per table! At past tea houses, each person got their own tea pot with their selection of tea. There was no warmer for the tea pot so the tea got cold before we finished our goodies. The tea selection is quite large but don't get a whole lot of choice of tea when you all have to agree at your table what you would like. We were treated quite rudely when it came time to pay, we noticed we were charged for 12 when only 10 ate AND they removed the table setting for 11 & 12 so they were aware that only 10 were in our party. We were told that we reserved for 12 so they served us for 12, no expections. Had we been aware of all of these things we would NOT have had our yearly Mother's Day tea at this tea house. The food was good, interesting but good. There was a lot to eat on the 3 tiered tray. We had to ask for more devonshire cream, jam & lemon curd, there wasn't enough for 4 people at each table. The serivce was mediocre at best, tea was not served in the traditional manner (it's not loose leaf tea but bagged!), the place is decorated very cute, and the gifts in the shop are quite expensive. There is a lot of room for improvement at this tea house, it could be a wonderful place for tea but some of their policies are ridiculous! I can understand being charged for 12 but having to put down a deposit & not getting our own choice of food selection is kinda crappy along with not getting your own pot of tea.

The English Rose just keeps getting better and better. They change their menu frequently and aren't afraid to try new things. I was there recently and the theme was Southwestern. The English Rose does not know how to do tea. The room is cute (if you like that sort of thing) and the food was fine (more on it later) but the tea was awful. The tea is placed in tea bags inside the pot and brewed in the kitchen, the tea bag is removed before they bring it to you. Unfortunately they seem to think eveyone likes very weak tea. We did ask that they leave the tea bag in for subsequent pots and that helped a little, but we found most of the black teas unimpressive. The first of the Ceylons in their list was pretty good, however. The English Rose is listed here as serving 'English style' tea, but in reality they serve some suburbian idea of what a Victorian tea might have been like. Their tea sandwiches (egg salad and some deli meat and cheese) were awful, and their scones came sprinkled with colored sugar!!! The British among us almost boycotted them on principle. Some of the other tidbits were pretty good, however - just not English.

I was visiting my cousin, in July of 2005, from IL. My cousin knew how much I love tea. I have a tea pot and cup collection. She surprised me by making reservations with Lisa before I arrived. She got the table right by the window. We had the lunch for 2. I cried through the whole lunch I was so surprised and the atmosphere was everything I would hope of tea time. I had never been to an actual tea room. I usually create my own tea time. I was so beautiful in the room. The hand painted chairs and table settings were georgeous. The service was top notch. Lisa was so gneuine. I bought a book and had her sign it. We were able to take pictures of our experience. I truely recommend the experience for the young and old!

For her 4th birthday last week, my daughter Olivia had a 'Bitty Baby and Me' (American Girl Doll) Tea Party at the English Rose. We had 6 girls, their mothers, her 2 grandmothers and her baby sister Ava attend. A few days before, I had reserved the table with wing chairs for the grandmothers, the French Settee area for the girls and a table nearby for the moms. When we arrived 15 minutes earlier (our reservations were at 3pm) to set placecards and balloons, there were guests still enjoying their tea at the tables I had requested. We were set at the tables in the back and along the side. I noticed that the other guests were finishing up and getting ready to leave. I asked the servers if we could please move to the tables that I had requested and they were VERY accomodating. They had already set up the other tables and had poured water. All our guests had arrived by this time and the servers now had to clear, clean and reset the other tables. I am happy that I stuck to my wishes because once everything was set and we finally had our seats, everything was perfect! The French Settee sits much lower so it was perfect for the girls and the grandmothers were cozy in the wing chairs. The girls had the Princess Penelope Tea- Liv's favorite- peanut butter with marshmallow creme sandwich shaped like a butterfly accompanied with a scone, fresh fruit, petit four and tea cake. Miss Laura served the girls throughout the afternoon, pouring their tea, helping them with the creme fraiche, lemon curd and jam for their scones...I was able to take pictures and enjoy a little of my Afternoon Tea because of Miss Laura! She was extremely patient with the girls and always knelt down at their level. One girl had complained about the tea flavor... Miss Laura handled it so well and reminded her that it was Olivia's birthday and that she chose her favorite flavor- vanilla and that the next pot will be her choice. For cake, the English Rose places a petit four with candle on a beautiful plate and around the plate it read 'Happy Birthday Olivia' in pink frosting. Since the girls already had petit fours, it saves to not have to bring in a cake. For a simple game, I purchased a silver chain and 8 silver charms (shapes- birthday cake, purse with pink rhinestones...). Each girl picked a charm, put it on the silver chain and made a birthday wish to Olivia. It was very sweet and my daughter was so proud and happy at the end to wear the charm bracelet. The girls recieved a pink crystal beaded bracelet afterwards. I had a couple other games planned that required paper and pencil (American Girl Doll Trivia, Guess the baby doll item)that I left out because there isn't enough room on the tables to do such games but it was fine, the girls were having fun. For placecards, I attached pictures of the American Girl Dolls that looked like the mothers and pictures of the Bitty Baby Dolls that looked like the daughters. For favors, each girl received a pink hat adorned with pink bow and flowers and a pink polka dot purse with white gloves, tea time stickers, along with their pink bracelet. It was a lovely afternoon! My heart was so happy to see my daughter happy and thoroughly enjoying tea time with her friends! I have had Afternoon tea in many places throughout California and in other countries. When I stepped into the English Rose last year, my heart exploded- FINALLY!- a beautiful tea room nearby that I can cherish Afternoon Tea with my children, friends and family! The English Rose reminds me a bit like the Empress Hotel in British Columbia with the celadon, sage greens and pinks, but cozier, like home. The day after Olivia's tea party, we opened the box expecting to just find the extra petit four to snack on, but also enclosed in the box was a scone and a gorgeous yellow rose! Liv and I were so surprised and turned the kettle on for another little tea party at home ;)! I'm writing this in hopes it helps anyone else who has a children's tea party at the English Rose. I think 4 is a great age where they begin to appreciate the precious things and keeping the tea party small makes it more manageable. I do suggest that if you have placecards and such to set up before everyone arrives to make your invitations 10-15 minutes past your reservation, (3:15 instead of 3). Thank you Lisa for opening such a gorgeous tea room and thank you Miss Laura for being such a gracious hostess to Olivia and her girlfriends! We look forward to many more lovely tea parties at the English Rose! Tea and Friendship, Olivia Marie and Dolly Marie

Today I had the perfect 'girls' tea that had a special touch I haven't experienced before @ other tea rooms. There are only 8 tables in the floral & green decorated room so reservations are recommended. After being seated @ a vintage themed table with linen, candle, silk flowers & pretty mismatched china you are offered a warm lavendar cloth to freshen up with followed by a gingersnap & sample of the tea of the day. The apron & flower clad servers are happy to make suggestions from their large choice of teas. Teas are brewed in the back & pre-strained before being served to your table. If you happen to not like the tea you selected they will happily serve you another choice. The limited menu offers traditional tea plates ranging from $7-$20 are served on a tierred server garnished with fresh flowers. The sandwiches & savories are changed each month. I got the Queen's tea that had a SW theme of 6 finger sandwiches, 3 savory bites, fresh fruit, a warm scone with jam, lemon curd & Devonshire cream. Dessert was a petite four, lemon cookie & toffee bar. Service is attentive but not rushed. @ the end of your tea you are served a mint & offered hand lotion. Some of the proceeds go to local charitable groups. There is a small gift shop of jewelry, dolls, tea items & note cards in the front with a serve yourself area of the tea of the day & lemon cookies. Great location to explore the shops before or after tea. Free 2 hour street parking readily available. I shall return!

This is a quaint, though small tea room similar to many others. The tables are very small and they really crowd you around them. The food was average and there was no music playing, which would have been nice. However, the main reason I won't be going back is that I was told that I could not select my own tea choice (I would have to have the SAME TEA as one of my friends) because there wasn't enough room on the table for 4 different teapots. I found this very rude and for $20 person should have been able to select my own tea.

Do not go hungry, unless you are just hungry for a peacefull afternoon of conversation with someone you care about. This is a great unhurried place to sit and chat over some excelent tea. They do not rush you out but welcome you to sit and visit as long as you like.
