I am broken hearted that this business is closed. I loved taking my Grsnddaughters for tea. We were planning a trip to Wilmingtin and Tea was in the top of the list of things we have to do! So sorry it's gone Emma Fuqua

Best tea I ever had! And by the water is such a relaxing spot. You'll want a whole pot each so you can justify lingering for a long while. It's a must for us on every trip to the area.

My daughter and I had the most wonderful time here. The waitress was very knowledgable about the different teas and food. I had the ' full tea' and my daughter had 1/2 sand & soup. The waitress was very helpful and polite, and it was almost too much to eat. We sat by the window to view the waterfront. We plan on making this a monthly ritual we had such a good time. Igive it 5 stars all the way around.

Took my daughter and 3 granddaughters for a special treat. Everyone was impressed with food and tea. I especially liked the fact that we could share a tea as my 2 granddaughters are not big eaters.

I was at the Wilmington Tea Room this past July and it was a wonderful experience. The owner was extremely gracious, the room was decorated beautifully-loved the colors-bright and cheery-and very clean. The teas we chose were delicious as was the food. Awesome place to visit-great for the ladies although my husband did come. Will definitely visit again!

My wife and I have visited three seperate tea rooms in the past six months. Biltmore Estate, The Ritz in Chicago, and the Wilmington Tea Room. Of the three the Wilmington Tea room is our favorite. The Apple Crisp Tea is our favorite and the food was much better than the other places we have visited. The sheer number of available teas is astounding. Highly recommended to any tea connoisseurs.

The surprise party my husband and son planned for me at Wilmington Tea Room was one of the best birthdays I have ever had. My friends and I enjoyed the lovely setting by the river, the delicious food, and the variety of teas available. I loved the Margaret's Hope Darjeeling especially! The fresh flowers and the beautiful presentation of the food were a treat. I felt so relaxed and happy while I was there. Our waitress was especially sweet, too. Thank you for a lovely tea party!

My dear friend and I finally made time for a leisurely lunch together. We have both enjoyed other visits to the Wilmington Tea Room, but this was our first time together. We each ordered the full tea and chose the salad. At almost the same time, we commented that the amount offered was just right and the dressing had just the right 'oomph.' The sandwiches, scones, and sweets were all fresh and tasty. Each item was flavorful without overpowering the others. We chose the white chocolate mousse tea, my favorite, and managed to let it steep a bit to long -- no harm done at all. We enjoyed every detail of our special time together, from the decor and service to the food and tea. It was the perfect place to catch up on the important facets of our lives.

My first visit to a tea room. What fun for my mother and me to share. Such a nice place with very friendly and helpful ladies working there. A few rude ladies sat neaxt to us, but we didn't allow there bad behavior to ruin our great memory. Thanks to Windy and the others we really had fun and plan to return many more times.

Their secret is in their love for what they do. Attention to detail is number one priority at this Tea Room and it shows. The decor is stunning - exactly what one pictures when conjuring up an image, plus a water view. The food is delectable. Finally, the service is top-notch. I only discovered the Tea Room last summer, but I have been several times since then and I always make a point to take my friends. Each and every one has raved!

When I moved to this area, the Wilmington Tea Room quickly became my favorite place to take friends for lunch. The decorating and tea service is both charming and cheerful. I find it delightful that each time I go I get a different china tea service than I have had before. Also, I can't resist putting at least one 'cube' of sugar in my tea with silver tongs (even though I don't use sugar). The tea ritual is calming and lovely. The variety of tea covers at least two pages in the menu but I had the Tuscan Pear on my fist visit and rarely stray from the taste of ripe pears. The staff is always careful to advise the correct timing for every tea. The food takes me back to my childhood when all food was prepared from scratch and cooks loved to have a special ingredient that put their signature on the dish. I especially enjoy the ham sandwich on cinnamon raisin bread, scones and cream, coconut macaroons...oops I could go on for a long time. I have taken my girlfriends from Michigan to the Tea Room, Son #1 and Daughter in law, Daughter in law #2 and two granddaughters (wee tea in real china for a 2 and 3 year old was priceless...wish I could post the pictures, God-daughter and her Mom, neighbors well I guess you get the idea that I love the food, service, atmosphere. Each visit is a memory.

Well, if anyone would kindly point me in the direction of the deli counter that sells chicken salad like this - I will be on my way! Had lunch at the Wilmington Tea Room, or the 'TR' as I heard one of the servers affectionately call it, today and I can't remember a nicer lunch. A dear friend from up north in town for a few days, we had a perfect view of the river and the bridge, and we lingered for quite a long time over our tea and savories. Well done, Wilmington Tea Room. *****

If you are a tea lover, you won't be disappointed! I agree with my mother's five star review. My friend didn't have any trouble finding a suitable decaf selection, I went with the house-recommended Cherry Rose, and my 7 year old loved the Tutti Frutti. As for our meal, we were beyond impressed. From the fresh berry salad, to the last crumb of 'dark chocolate blackberry brownie', this tea service was AWESOME! I'd also like to point out that we were seated, without a reservation, in our casual vacation clothes. There were girls at a large table, enjoying a girly tea party in their dresses and hats, and there were others like us - on vacation, on a stroll through downtown, lucky enough to stumble upon this gem. It is most definitely a wonderful place for a casual outing. How unfortunate that someone would say otherwise.:( We loved it, and we can't wait to return!

Wow! I knew it would be great, after checking the feedback, but it was better than GREAT! Thank you for saving us a seat, even though we were late! The only thing better than the service at the Wilmington Tea Room is the delicious food. I have read all the descriptions - amazing, to die for, etc - but it's just plain delicious! All the cute little girls in their aprons make you feel so welcomed, they bring you a fresh pot of lose-leaf tea and describe your food options, but you have no idea what a treat your in for! Then the seafood bisqe arrives and you think it can't get better. Until your huge serving platter comes out, loaded with goodies fresh from the oven. You will know your in heaven when you taste the ooey gooey chocolate bar. I could go on and on, but I think anyone who has been already gets it. Anyone who hasn't - well, more for the rest of us! Make a reservation and they will save you a seat too!

While strolling the Boardwalk in downtown Wilmington last weekend, my huband and I happened upon this charming little spot. Tucked away in a cozy little corner of a part of downtown where the streets are still cobbled, this is a restaurant we wish we'd discovered earlier in our vacation. The view of the river and bridge from our table was spectacular, and was enhanced by the soothing music tinkling in the background. We ordered seafood bisque (superb!), followed by full tea service. Imagine our delight when we presented with such an elegant, plentiful spread! The scones are like none other I've tasted, moist and light - and decadent with fresh cream and strawberry preserves. The sandwiches were delicious! We especially enjoyed the ham salad on cinammon bread - so unexpected, yet so flavorful. Our presentation was topped off by some of the most amazing pastries I've had. We wanted to take the chef home with us, even more so when we found out she made everything scratch. After paying our (very reasonable) bill, we mdae our way back out into downtown with out tummies satisfied and our spirits lifted. Not before we noticed the outstanding sanitation score of 101.5. I didn't know that was possible! I'd like to praise the owner and staff of the Wilmington tea room for a job well done. This place is a much-needed addition to the hustle and bustle of a growing town. I hope you will continue to do what you're doing for a long time to come - I know I'll keep coming back!

I agree ENTIRELY with Suzie A. The ladies at the Wilmington Tea Room have a passion for what they do and it shows. I too have visited many tea rooms, both here and abroad. In some I have found nice presentation, but so-so food. In others, great food with ok service. This place is the complete package! Vintage china and pressed linens on the tables add that special touch. There is even a server with an English accent - too charming! My understanding is that their tables stay full most of the time, and I can see why. You will not be disappointed when you make the decision to visit this quaint riverside Tea Room. Go for the full tea service for a little (a big) taste of all the delicacies the chef has created. And don't skip the seafood bisque - to die for. Classy all the way!

I am a tea LOVER. 2 weeks ago a friend and I had the full tea at the Wilmington Tea Room. I have to tell you, my husband and I have had tea in hundred's of places including a few castle's but they cannot compare to the tea here! The tea was fantastic but the sandwiches, scones and pastries were over the top delicious. I think their secret may be the love, hard work and real enjoyment for what they do that they put into your tea experience. The place was spotless, the staff friendly and all of the little extra touches everywhere including the ladies room added up to an experience you would be hard pressed to duplicate anywhere else. Thank you again for a memorable luncheon.

My daughter and I drove from Myrtle Beach to enjoy lunch at the Wilmintgon Tea Room, and were pleased to find the following: a charming historic interior, beautifully decorated and accented with fresh flowers and lovely music; two full menu pages of tea offerings in different styles and flavors; plentiful servings of gourmet-quality food; and a very charming server (Anna) who was not only knowledgeable about the brewing and serving of tea, but who also took plenty of time to help us in our selections. We make it a point to visit tea rooms on every vacation or trip we take, and this is truly the only one I would make a 2-hour drive to experience time and again. What a great tea room to visit when you're looking for that hometown hospitality. The fast paced city life builds the anticipation of visiting the Wilmington Tea Room everytime we come to town. They even ship 'cups of relaxation' to us in OHIO! Keep it up ladies!

My daughter-in-law treated me to my a memorable Mother's Day at the Wilmington Tea Room this past year. It was a wonderful 'girl's' day spent. The atmosphere, the food and, more importantly, the introduction to the Wilmington Tea Room were great. So much so, we are planning to go again this year!

I'd like to share the following: From the NovDec 2008 Issue of The Tea House Times. The Wilmington Tea Room, 224 S. Water Street, Wilmington, NC, 910-343-1832 www.wilmingtontearoom.com Located on the eastern bank of the Cape Fear River directly on downtown’s historic Riverwalk, the Wilmington Tea Room is perfectly situated to provide a respite from the harried pace of contemporary life. Once inside the Tea Room, visitors are greeted by periwinkle walls and a cheery staff. Tables are set with a mélange of lovely pieces of china, each place setting accentuated with silver and crisp, white, embroidered linens. These subtle touches make the Tea Room comfortable for visitors new to tea rooms, for tourists in their shorts and casual shirts, as well as for brides-to-be and their parties in elegant dresses. The special space of the Wilmington Tea Room is amplified by the assortment of delicious teas and sumptuous savories and sweets. A full tea includes salad or a wonderful seafood bisque, scones with preserves and Devonshire cream, four varieties of sandwiches, assorted baked treats, and fresh fruits. For younger Tea Room visitors, the Wee Tea includes lemonade, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, sweets, and fruit. A relative newcomer to Wilmington, I discovered the Tea Room on a rainy day when my brother was in town for a quick visit. We wanted a light lunch and chanced upon the Tea Room. We were both delighted with the attentive service, the delicious food and teas, and the comfortable ambiance. Since then I have been to a baby shower at the Tea Room and was so taken with all of the elements of the morning that I have coordinated three family gatherings there. Each gathering had its own character and level of formality and each time the Tea Room was the perfect spot. While you might find a table for two available on a busy summer afternoon, plan to include a stop at the Wilmington Tea Room by making a reservation and enjoy the anticipation of a charming interlude. Reviewed by Jennifer Deets This is an independent review and can be found online at the publisher's website. Way to go, Wilmington Tea Room!

For anyone who read the previous post and doubts the authenticity of these reviews, pay no mind. The author, who, coincidentally chooses to remain anonymous, as do all negative reviewers, has obviously not been into the tea room recently. While always a very charming restaurant with excellent food and friendly (although somewhat inconsistent) service in the past, it has undergone a wonderful transformation since being taken over by a new owner last year. We have come to the defense of our friend and colleague as the result of a negative review, true. But this does not make our feedback fabricated or irrelevant. Please note that nearly every five star review is accompanied by someone's name. This site has a block that will not allow you to post more than one review. Shame on you Southern Tea Lover. If you were so unimpressed, why wait until now to post your review? Talk about a coincidence... A delightful experience for all. Five plus stars. Don't take our word for it; see for yourself!

I am a tea lover and find it really hard to believe that this tea room had only four reviews until it had one very bad one. Immediately following the poor review, it received over two dozen favorable reviews all on the same day, very unusual. How ironic and what a coincidence. This seems very suspicious to me and I am sure anyone who reads the entire list of reviews would agree. This is supposed to be a site where people can get honest opinions from visitors. I can only hope that these reviews are real, and if they are, Kudos to you for bringing your tea room back. I hope that it is all true because I have been to your tea room a few times and found it to be just average.

I have had the great pleasure of enjoying this wonderful tea room twice. The first time being with my two little girls Girl Scout group, where the whole staff went above and beyond to accommodate our large and very excited group of Mom's and girls. We enjoyed it so much we came back with our family and friends later for a Mother's Day tea where we enjoyed a very special day that we will always remember. We greatly enjoyed the assortment of wonderful tea's, giving my girls a new appreciation for a fine berry tea! The food was so good, and the girls loved getting their very own tray of goodies. I highly recommend the She Crab soup, so yummy! We will definitely be back and look forward to another wonderful afternoon at the Wilmington Tea Room.

I had the pleasure of experiencing the Wilmington Tea Room a few months ago when I planned a private party for my niece. I live in Ohio and the majority of our guests traveled from all over the Midwest to attend. I am an administrator, a planner, so I had very high expectations regarding the level of service and quality of their facility and food, especially since I had not been there before so everything had to be planned from afar. We were completely impressed with the facility, the attention to detail, the attentiveness of the staff, the quality and presentation of the food, and the fairness of their pricing. Alexis and her team took care of every detail, accommodated every request, and made us feel very welcomed and appreciated. I plan events for a Fortune 500 company and I know what to look for when it comes to getting the most for your dollar and providing a quality event. I can assure you that is exactly what you will get from the Wilmington Tea Room.

Coming from Australia and now living in the US we really miss our 'hot tea' so it has been wonderful to find this little place that serves tea (I recommend the 'On the Waterfront' herbal tea) The food is excellent and I always order the high tea, starting with the salad and finishing with the ooey gooey chocolate squares. Wow! Alexis and all, I am sure you're distressed over this 'IRRATE' person who is leaving bad reviews all over the place, but take heart. There are many 'highly professionals' who hold you in 'highly' regard. My official review for prospective visitors is: Visit this tea room as soon as possible, you will not be disappointed. In addition to hosting my bridal shower AND baby shower at the Wilmington Tea Room, I take clients in for lunch several times a month. The food is fresh and very tasty. I visited the tea room for lunch today with two of my friends and was witness to the most appalling display of ignorance and hostility I could imagine. An obnoxious group of young people arrived nearly an hour late for their reservation. (I know this because when we walked in without a reservation we were asked to return in 45 minutes to accommodate the large group.) Although two members of the party had arrived on time, all the rest just walked in, as if everyone would drop everything for them. Our table was immediately next to the group, so we heard every word of conversation. They were so angered by being asked to please proceed with their order that they began to berate their waitresss and make ridiculous demands! For a moment it was as if we had encountered a toddler tea party. When my friend complained about the group's loud and disruptive behavior, the manager apologized and promised to try to keep the group calm. No luck! They yelled at their waitress that they 'should have gone to Golden Corral.' (Quite right, you should have. Your group would fit right in.) They purposely dropped flatware to the floor, to be retrieved by the waitress. They ordered multiple drinks each, for the sole purpose of 'making more work' for the staff. Finally, the manager was forced to ask the group to leave. We could have hugged her! This tea room is a beautiful, classic example of what a fine Tea Room should be. It is not the place for loud and obnoxious behavior, crude language, and bad manners. When you visit, expect this wonderful staff to treat you like a guest. The food is outstanding; the prices are reasonable. Visit soon and visit often!

There is not a low enough score to rate this place! I am IRRATE as of right now. My close friends and I have planned to have a nice luncheon for our friend, who is to be married end of this month. We thought it would be nice to enjoy time together there celebrating her engagement. BOY WERE WE WRONG!!! From the moment we entered the a dark curly haired woman greeted us with nothing but PURE attitude. I have never seen such behavior. Rushing us to get our group of 10 ppl there & start our lunch orders. (knowing with a group of 10 not everyone is going to arrive at the same times) I think that should be knowledge that every restaurant could understand. Especially with this location being downtown wilmington with no specialized parking place for the restaurant. The woman proceded to continue with her bad customer service skills. We decided to continue and/or try to make a nice day for our friend and attempt to have a nice time. Once we finished our soup & chicken salad sandwich. She approached our table saying she would go ahead and print our bill and asked us to leave??? The problem here is the only one who is acting out of order, was HER. I don't feel like we were causing a scene by any means. This is not the way to conduct a business. Living in Wilmington, NC you will learn with it being a small town, WORD of Mouth, takes a business far. What this lady does not realize that she had a group of 10 highly professionals sitting at her table. One being, myself as an Event Planner. As long as that lady is working there , I will make sure not any one of my clients hold any type of event in this venue. Even to grab a cup of tea.

We weren't sure what to expect after reading some of the reviews but the tearoom was excellent!! We were a group in town at the end of June for a family reunion and came in without a reservation. The women at the TeaRoom sat us immediately and were very friendly and helpful. The food was great...the seafood bisque, the Asian salad, and especially the gooey brownie dessert on the top layer. We had an opportunity to visit the Wilmington Tea Room and found it to to be an enjoyable experience. The place is decorated shabby chic and is very pretty. The view is pleasant overlooking the riverwalk and the location delightful. The wait staff seemed very helpful and we were served promtly. Our tea was very good. However I feel like the food could use some improving. The sandwiches, soup and salad were okay. The clotted cream was good which helped the scones out. Honesty the poppy seed muffins and the scones tasted like they were made with bisquick. The bar cookies tasted like they were made using crisco instead of butter. It may be a personal preference- I enjoy butter. Indeed the food isn't everything when having tea. I would return to this establishment because I enjoy the tea experience-family, friends, sharing life and relaxing over tea, it's fun. I am pleased to have found the Wilmington Tea Room.

We've (4 or 5 in the part) tried this tearoom 3 different times and all 3 were very disappointing. The service was poor-had to ask for silverware for at least 1 party member every time, tea was forgotten for another member, flip-flops, t shirts, jeans and navels are not what we considered appropriate attire for a tearoom. On another note, the food was good and the tea selection was fairly good.

My husband and I had afternoon tea while we were in Wilmington for our 29th wedding anniversary. This tearoom is very nice, clean and in order. I have been to some tearooms that are just not clean and look dirty with heavy drapes that look like they have been hanging on the windows for decades and room colors so dark that it makes one feel as if they were in a cave. Not here, the room is cheerful with pretty white tablecloths and windows that are clean and shinny. Where you can sit on the deck by the water if you like and enjoy your tea. The girls that where there that day were so friendly and talked with us about the teas and the other foods that were offered. They made me feel very welcome. The tea was delightful, with warm scones, clotted cream and yummy finger sandwiches that were very tasty. The soup my husband had was very good and the salad I had was fresh and crisp with just the right amount of dressing. I own a tearoom myself and I look for things that other people may not. I was very impressed. The owner was not there that day, but I can assure her that things were carried out very professionally. Next time I come to this town you can bet I will return.

A friend and I stopped by on a busy afternoon near Christmas. After hesitating a little (they apparently alloted food and space only for those with reservations -there was a sign on the door stating that reservations were needed), we were allowed to stay. After that, the service was really good - our server was friendly and answered our questions and helped us with our selections, although it was a very busy day. The food was delicious, especially the soup, which came with a decanter of sherry. The decor is exquisite, and the location on the river makes it a delightful experience.
