This business is closed. spoke to a former employee who said the owner had not been paying her bills to food companies and others. Unbeknownst to her employees she just locked the doors and when they showed up for work they found the business had closed. Due to the debt of the business no one wants to purchase it. So sad. It was one of the best tea rooms around.

Last night my husband and I enjoyed the most memorable experience at the Royal Tea Room in LaPlata. The Yuletide Tea Service by Chef Betty and her staff brought back special memories spent with family and friends. From the moment we arrived a group of students from LaPlata High School were singing Christmas carols on the front porch. This set the tone for the rest of the evening from the personalized décor of each room and the food which by the way was not only fantastic its presentation was edible art for the pallet. We are looking forward to Chef Betty’s next creation.

This was my second visit to the Royal Tea Room and, once again, it didn't disappoint. From the person who took my reservation over the phone and confirmed my dietary preferences, to the chef who stopped by the table to check on our meal -- the service is unparallelled and the food is top-notch. I highly, highly recommend this tea room. It is second only to the St. James Tea Room in Albuquerque, New Mexico (which is in a class all of its own). The Royal Tea Room truly offers you a pleasant, perfect afternoon.

I absolutely recommend this tea room! The tea and food was the best of any I have had at any tea room, including even those in England. The cream of crab soup was exceptional. The tea had a full, rich flavor and the selection was great. The staff were attentive and pleasant; the atmosphere charming. Abundant food, we even took a few desserts home we were too full to finish. Definitely want to go back!

I was invited here for a baby shower, so it was my first time here, and I loved it. I brought my 5 year old Daughter and it was a true Tea Party experiance, a one for her to remember. The food was amazing and the display of everything was so cute. I will be back to visit soon. It was truly a wonderful experiance.

We had my daughgter's Bridal Shower yesterday and it was exactly the classy elegant venue we were looking for. The food and service were perfect. Betty's Cream of Crab soup was the best I've ever had. Everyone was accomodating and friendly. A beautiful day for all. Thank you.

I LOVE the NEW OWNERS of the Royal Tearoom in LaPlata, MD! I used to go to the tearoom but the owner was kind of rude and the staff not so happy! Food was good but now it is the perfect tearoom! The staff is very kind and smiles are everywhere! As soon as I walked into the tearoom, I could tell that someone else has taken over. It is very clean and looks beautiful! The food is AMAZING! You REALLY need to visit this Teahouse/room! 5 Stars to the new owner and the staff! Try it....I KNOW YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Had another fabulous lunch ate the Tea Room yesterday. As always, the food was fantastic. The selection of 30+ teas satisfied all of us. The Christmas decorations were beautiful and the servers were very attentive. Miss Betty stopped by our table to chat and make sure everything was perfect, which it was! Can't wait to come again.

Yummy food. Poor customer service. Needs a dress code and perhaps a no babies rule. Had a reservation. As we were seated we were told we had to hurry and finish for the next reservation which was 2 hours later. :/ Had to ask about the teas and were told they only have 3 varieties. Considering this is a tea house you would think they'd have a larger selection and an actual presentation. Does not respond to emails.

      Tearoom response:

We are very sorry that your reservation wasn't recognized upon your arrival. I do remember this incident, and we were able to seat you almost immediately. It is always our policy to ask the customer to whom they spoke with so we may insure that these types of mistakes are not repeated. It was in no way to blame you for our error and we are sorry if you felt that way. As far as a conversation regarding our Mother's Day Tea, we would never intentionally hang up on a perspective customer. Not sure how this happened. Thank you for the 4 stars for our food. We do appreciate your business and hate to lose it.

My daughter and I went for High Tea at The Royal Tea Room today.....It was absolutely perfect! Warm and cozy setting. Delicious food with a beautiful presentation. Great tea - lots to choose from- even speciality teas- we are tea totallers. The best service - outstanding - very personable and attentive. Reasonable prices.... and last but not least - Awesome Company! xo I have to say The Tea Room was even better than the teas we have been to at Casey Jones Crossings.....Really! Try it I promise you will not be disappointed - can't wait to go back.

Not always when traveling or just hearing about a particular new eatery it turns out to be exactly what you've imagined. Last night my husband and I went to the Royal Tea Room in our quaint townn of La Plata, MD. This charming old house was made up like a Hollywood set, decorated with fog, candlelabras, eerie music and dressed up characters that made this 'Spooktacular Royal Tea' an experience to remember. Chef Betty and her staff is an added delight and welcomed pleasure to our town. The food surpasses any my husband and I have tasted and we've traveled a lot in our years in the Navy. In these trying times this brings a slice of pure pleasure to the palate with a side dish of charm and royality. Under the new management of Chef Betty and her professinoal staff, The Royal Tea Room of La Plata should be a must stop whether passing through or just needing a place to come for an experience you'll always remember.

My Royal Tea experience was SUPERB! The interior was decorated for Harvest Season. Each table was nicely adorned with crisp linens, NO paper napkins! Classical music played softly, no competition with patrons conversations. Chef Betty's delectable tea treats were plentiful, delicious and filling. There were three soup choices. Crab, Spinach and Tomato Bisque. I had the tomato bisque which was creamy and seasoned just right. Scone Time! I chose the cranberry scone, later in the evening (at home), I had the lemon poppy scone which was moist and crumbly. One enormous plus: A generous serving of lemon curds, homemade clotted cream and Constant Comment tea infused homemade jelly. My tea tier had a variety of tea sandwiches, cucumber, egg salad, chicken salad, two miniature quiche, fruit and a crab ball. There were enough desserts that two could share, none were store bought. Chef Betty made tea time personal and special, she conversed with the guests and asked their opinion in regards to tea time. I left the Royal Tea Room a satisfied customer. I highly recommend this tea room.

I do not think this Tea Room deserves to be the #3 in the state of Maryland. Yes, granted, the food is ok, the shops are nice, and the atmosphere can be very cozy... but everything else is a big sloppy mess. I have scheduled a coupld private partes there (including a baby shower and princess party) as well as dining in for lunch, finding myself leaving the Tea Room disappointed instead of satisfied. Many a times the owner, Dee, was very hard to talk to- she seems to be overwhelmed, distracted, and completely unorganized. At one of the events I planned, she ruined the whole experience with her loud and obnoxious behavior, which she also passed a long to our server, which was her daughter. The only time we were properly addressed was when it came time to pay the bill. The food IS average because anyone can go to Sams Club and whip together the appetizer and dessert trays we were presented. The service we had was ok, but made us feel uncomfortable at times, especially when the server spent most her time talking about her financial struggles being a young mom. To be quit honest and straight to the point, this place is a joke; and an embarrassment to the town of La Plata. All the other reviews I've read (the poorly rated ones) are very true. If the food was homemade, I'd say this Tea Room, as well as management, would fit more appropriately in St Marys County.

      Tearoom response:

Since your last visit to the Tea Room, the previous owner has sold as of August 1st. The Royal Tea Room is under new ownership and would like to take this time to personally invite you back and see what is new. We apologize for your previous experience and would like to add that the previous owner did the best she could under rather extreme circumstances and it was never her intentions to be an embarrassment to the town of La Plata.

The atmosphere is one of simple elegance. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable from start to finish. And, oh, the cream of crab soup! It was brimming with chunks of crab and the flavor was oh so good! Others had caesar salad and the Ruben sandwich. Not a crumb was left on the plates. The dessert selection although small was diverse and we had a hard time choosing from Cheesecake, Chocolate cake, Hot Peach Cobbler or Scones. Decided on the cheesecake and chocolate cake. Extremely generous portions and lick the plate yummy. Can't wait to go back.

My mother and I enjoy going for tea when time allows and this was a terrific choice. We were welcomed by the beautiful landscape and pleasant hostess. We were presented with a tea menu that offered quite a variety. My husband and daughter who are not really into the finery of tea even found a vanilla blend that they were able to enjoy. While we waited for our tea and desserts we were able to select our own tea cup from a beautiful selection of cups. The desserts we chose were all delicious. I look forward to stopping back in for a full lunch.

One of the best chicken salads I have had. I would come back just for this. The scones however were severely lacking. I really expected better after the great lunch. Also the clotted cream was made with cream cheese rather than marscapone which gave it an odd flavor. Our server could have been a little more pleasant but over all we will be back the lunch was something to write home about we had chicken salad and quiche and side salad which we all split so we could try a variety it was a very good idea as everything in the lunch menu was excellent.

We love this Tea Room and visit frequently. The food, atmosphere, and friendliness of the owner and staff make it our go-to place for lunch. We recently had a large family gathering and asked the owner (Dee) if she could support us. Dee went above and beyond to prepare food for us and give us the directions on how to prepare the food. Even though the Tea Room was closed the day we served the food, Dee called us to make sure we didn't have any questions or needed additional items. My picky family members couldn't stop raving about the delicious cream of crab soup and pasta salad. Before the Tea Room opened, I took my mother and mother-in-law to the Ritz Carlton in No. Va. occasionally for high tea. The Tea Room is heads above them for variety of food, High Tea Service, and comfort.

I attended a tea with my tea club recently. We were not offered a choice of tea at our table (perhaps the club selected it earlier?) but the Peach Tea that was served had a lovely, delicate taste and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The setting, in a former rectory, resembled the dining room of an elegant home. We were a large group, but I did not feel crowded. The food was offered in four courses, each presented in a lovely way: hot scones, soup and salad, selection of hot hors d'ouevres, and a final three-tiered sandwich and dessert selection. The selections were remarkably extensive, and everyone enjoyed the variety of tastes. I must agree with some of the other comments that the servers were overwhelmed at times, though unfailingly pleasant, and refills to our teapot were slow in coming. All together, this is a lovely place to share tea in a small or large group, and there is a bonus 'shopping' area in the three bedrooms upstairs. You will enjoy!

We had our youngest daughter's 8th birthday party at the Royal Tea Room. It was a GREAT success due to Dee and her staff. The little girls all 17 of them had a wonderful time -- they are still talking about this party. 49 years old and just went to my first tea yesterday, 5/10/11, with my 7 yr. old nieces Girl Scout Troop. I took my 7 year old granddaughter along. We had a splendid time. It was so cute to see them act so dainty with their pinkies up when drinking their tea (fruitpunch) - - I did let them get some vanilla tea because they wanted sugar cubes so bad. I took them upstairs and of course they found something for me to buy, the cute ribbon headbands, of which all the little girls went crazy over when we went back downstairs. I can't wait to do an event there with my sisters, mother and friends. Just for something different to do. The food was good also.

I was very disapointed, I met 11 other family members for an easter/mothersday celerbration, most of us ordered the 'royal tea'. It was a big disapointment, we were there for over 3.5 hours. First I have to say the scone was Excellent, but sadly the only thing homemade. I reconized most items on the appetizers tray from costco or sams club. the soup was not homemade nor the salad dressings.the tuna, chicken and egg salad were dry and the desserts, one was a cake i buy from sams for are church dinners.the petit fours i could not even eat, no taste at all. I was disapointed to say the least, expecting most things to be homemade, atleast the dessert, soup and salad dressing. I don't think thats much to ask for paying $21.00 plus 20% tip on an afternoon lunch! On top of that the owner/mgr was to busy talking and not listening that she charged my cousin an additional $15.00 for soup/salad that she wanted to share with her elderly 80 somehting mother. Two bites and she's fool!(they were sharing the royal-tea, but the owner/mgr wanted to make sure she got her extra 15.00 which could have been taken care of differntly if she had only allowed us to explain what she wanted to do. Yes, the tea room is pretty, but it is sadly lacking in the kitchen...... also I want to include are waitress was very good and did her job very well. If I decide to meet my family members again there ( this was are second visit in 3 months) I will be sure to only order from the menu and never again would I waste $$ on the royal tea. I would order the rubens, and other sandwhichs.

      Tearoom response:

Wow....This party was somewhat confusing for the kitchen to properly serve the food in the manner we prefer as the 8 people who ordered the Royal Tea service were not all sitting together. My server is not experienced enough yet to have made sure that those people should have been personally seated together. It is not customary for guests to share a tea service here or in any other tea rooms from my experience, without charging a sharing cost. We did not charge that customer a sharing fee but instead she was charged from the lunch menu, a la cart for her soup & salad, scone, and her tea. Not sure about the $15.00 fee mentioned. The tea Service comes with 1 soup, salad, and scone per person. We were asked to serve her her these items. According to my records, on Aprill 22, which was the day this group visited us, they were our only customers at the time, so they would have received very quick service. 3.5 hours was incorrect. If they were here that long it was their choice. Maybe they went shopping? Tea services are not everyone's cup of tea, and as an alternative we offer a good variety of entrees on our luncheon menu.

Once again, we had another wonderful experience at The Royal Tea Room. Our service, meal and the overall atmosphere couldn't have been better. Our server was new to waiting tables but in our books he was a seasoned pro. He never missed a beat and attended to us very professionally. The owner, Dee, came over to our table and chatted with us for a bit which added to our enjoyment. My friends and I spent about two and a half hours there yesterday and just had a pleasant Sunday afternoon. If you haven’t experienced The Royal Tea Room & Gifts, you should definitely give it a try. If you don’t want to order the Royal Tea or Afternoon Tea, no problem…they have a marvelous lunch menu…Plus lovely collectibles and antiques for purchase. Trust me, you will not be disappointed in this historically quaint, picturesque restaurant.

I had my daughter's baby shower here on Saturday. The service was excellent and the staff was more than accommodating. The teapots were filled constantly with different varieties. The scone served with devonshire cream and jellies were delicious. The sandwiches and desserts, served on a 3-tier tray, were excellent. The staff loaded the car with the gifts and wrapped up cupcakes for our guests to take home. It was a wonderful afternoon spent in this cozy old house. It is also fun to look at the antiques and gifts they have to offer.

A friend and I went there for afternoon tea today and I have to say we were more than pleased with our experience. The tea to choose from on the menu is a good, broad selection, but most of it seemed to be bag tea as oppposed to loose leaf tea, although the tea was high quality. The food included in the afternoon tea was all delicious and beautifully displayed. The atmosphere was very cozy and whimsical. For the afternoon tea, we got to pick our own tea cups and saucer from a beautiful display which I thought was a delightful touch. It would probably be best to call ahead to make a reservation for the afternoon tea since the last time my husband and I just walked in, I don't recall seeing it on the regular menu and I think you may have to make a reservation for it. Better safe than sorry. However, the Royal Tea Room is a great choice for a casual lunch as well if an afternoon tea isn't your thing. The Royal Tea Room has a lifelong customer in me.

      Tearoom response:

Shannon, Thank you for the kind review. We appreciate your business, especially in these troubled economic times. I just want to clarify a couple of things for others who may read this. 98% of all tea served to the customers is in loose leaf form. We do, however sale a vairiety of loose tea and sacheted tea in our retail area. The tea service menu is located on the back side of our everyday menu, and yes, it is always wise to have reservations for the tea service. Although there have been times when business is slow that we can accomandate walk in customer requests for tea service. Once again, thank you for your visit and we look forward to the next one.

A group of friends took one lady to the Royal Tea Room for lunch and farewell as she is moving out of the area. Dee was very gracious from my phone call for reservations to greeting us on our arrival. The tea was piping hot and stayed hot due to the cute tea cozies on each pot. The service was excellent and the food especially yummy! I enjoyed the Italian Wedding Soup, and a chicken salad sandwich on a nicely toasted croisant.I have to say the chicken salad was fresh tasting and with just the right amount of mayonnaise and fruit. It rivaled the chicken salad that i've purchased from Gerards French Bakery in Oxon Hill, MD. Two of us shared the Brownie ala mode dessert which was served hot and was dense and chocolaty. A wonderful time was had by everyone in our group, and we enjoyed browsing in the gift shop, and chatting with Dee the owner. It was a lovely way to spend the afternoon, and I'm looking forward to returning really soon.

Recently stopped in because I had heard good things from others who had eaten at the tea room. I had lunch and not the tea service, so that may be the reason I felt like the experience was very average. The quality of the salad I had was mediocre, however, very pricey. Maybe I should have gotten the tea service. Disappointed.

I have been to the tea room quite a few times, and while the place is very quaint and has a nice atmosphere, the service was nothing great. There seems to be only one server, who is extremely overwhelmed. We had the Royal Tea and the service was slow, which we could understand because of the lack of help the server had on such a busy day. The crab soup was exceptional, but was very cold and we had mostly soup and no crab. The mini sandwiches were good and well prepared. Toward the end of our meal, the owner came out and spoke to the waitress. She was very loud and we could hear everything she said from our table in the back. She was also very rude to the waitress and I was surprised and shocked. Her voice was loud and carried beyond the back room. She destroyed the atmosphere of the cute quiet tea room with her obnoxious behavior,

My mother took me to lunch at the tea room for my birthday...a rare chance for the two of us to spend time together alone. As always, the restaurant was beautifully decorated. We were seated quickly but were not asked for even a drink order for 20 minutes. That was OK - we had planned on taking our time. Lunch was delicious. However, about half way through our meal the owner came out from the kitchen. Normally, this would be a nice touch. However, she was so loud that my mother and I couldn't hear each other. She spent about 10 minutes at one table, where it appeared she knew someone. Then she moved to the next asking questions about other tea houses they have visited. This discussion also lasted 10 minutes or more and while I glanced back several times, she did not appear to notice. She finally left the room once dessert was served. I'm suprised that she obviously goes to a lot of effort to create a particular atmosphere and then is completely unaware that she ruined it. Very dissapointing.

      Tearoom response:

If you waited 20 minutes for a beverage then that is NOT OK. We have 1 experienced server at this time and are in the process of training others now. I can understand how this mistake would lead you to pay special attention to all other details of your visit. Since this restaurant is located in a home, it is very easy to overhear other nearby conversations. I am not able to go out on the dining floor often so I remember this incident. The ladies that were talking about other tearooms engaged me into their conversation which then lead to my questions about their tearoom visits. During our conversation one of those ladies motioned to me that she had a slight hearing problem by pointing to her ear....I am very sorry that I interrupted your special time with your mother. If you decide to bring your mother again, you can ask to be seated in the back room where there is a little more privacy.

My mother and sister hosted a baby shower for me at the Tea Room at the end of January. I called early in the month to ask if they could accommodate a party of our size and was told that they could. I called the week of the party and confirmed the # of guests and asked if we could bring in cheese cake or cupcakes for the party and was told we could. The owner called my sister later in the week and told her we could NOT bring them in, but eventually conceded that we could if we brought our own 'clear plastic plates and cutlery' to serve them on. She also told my sister the service would start promptly at 2 and all guests needed to be present by then. When we got there for the shower there was another shower going on in the room we needed. That party did not clear out until about 2:30 and they did not start seating us until about 2:45. They had a tiny 10x15 room to try to accommodate my 24 guests. From the very beginning they should have let us know their facility was too small. They didn't have enough chairs so my sister went and asked for a couple more and the owner told her we asked for 22 chairs and we were only getting 22 chairs. She also told my sister we had to be out promptly at 4 because they had to set up for another party. Well their 'next party' happened to be a party my aunt was throwing and didn't start until 6pm. They apparently needed two hours to set up for a party of 11. There were two other young ladies on hand that day. One of them was extremely friendly and accommodating, the younger of the two was just as stuck up and snotty as the owner. I would not recommend this place for a gathering of more than a hand-full of people. I personally will not choose to host a gathering here ever again and will think very hard before I come back as a guest of any one.

      Tearoom response:

We, like most establishment have had times that we failed to meet a customer's expectations. We have privately and publicly admitted to them and offered recompense and apology. After reviewing this event with staff, the only fact I can come up with is that the party did indeed start late. Rather than contest each complaint point for point we will disagree with this account and stand on our history of customer service as recorded in the reviews on this page. We do agree with the reviewer that it would be best to go our seperate ways regarding future business and wish her well at other venues.

My grand daughter had her first tea party she just turned 5 years old. For an entire year all she talked about having a tea party. I thought to give her a real one for my little princess. The family and friends had a great time. The food is just out of this world so delightful. The staff is outstanding and the set up really make you feel like you are at home. I will put this on the top of my list to visit again. Thank you all for a wonderful time. Carol 2-1-11

I live far away, but over the years the Royal Tea Room has become our family gathering place....be it landmark birthdays, baby showers, graduation celebrations or an intimate luncheon with a friend on the porch...the ambiance, the service and the food are all wonderful. I love the Royal Tea Room! Sometimes I even go there by myself....and Dee keeps me company (when she can).

My cousins and I recently met for lunch at this lovely Tea Room. We are the grandchildren of Dr. and Mrs. Aubrey A. Posey who built the house in 1929 and raised their family under its roof. Needless to say, it was a time of reminiscing for us all. We brought pictures from the 1940's and matched them up to the home's exterior. As far as my meal, the plum spice tea was delicious, served piping hot and housed in a sweet little tea cosy to keep it warm. I ordered the crab cake and tilapia combination and both were very well prepared. The cream of crab soup was luscious, creamy, rich and full of large lumps of crabmeat. For dessert, we all had the bread pudding with bourbon sauce and it just capped off a fantastic meal of food, family and fun! I am honored that my grandparents' home is used for such a lovely function. And the owner was most gracious in showing us around and helping us to identify photos. I picked up a few treasures from the gift shops to take home. I celebrated my 1st birthday on the front porch of this family home and my oldest daughter suggests that I should celebrate my next birthday there as well... what a great idea! Don't miss this elegant little tea room on your next visit to LaPlata. Thanks, Dee!

My friend and I discovered The Roayal Tea Room in an effort to find a 'halfway point' to meet (she lives in California, MD, I live in Bethesda). What a lovely little gem we discovered in La Plata! We had an incredibly yummy lunch (the chicken salad is divine, and my friend ordered the bread pudding which was to die for--but everything is amazing!) The owner came out to greet us personally when she heard we were first timers. We will definitely be back soon (perhaps for a full tea experience). My only disappointment was that I wish the little shop had a larger tea selection and some more little tea things. Give yourself a treat and take yourself to tea!

Looking for a place where time and tradition are honored and cuisine is artfully prepared? Then La Plata's Royal Tea Room is the place to go. I've been to the Royal Tea Room on many occassions and can honestly say I have never been disappointed. From its warm atmosphere, friendly customer service and delicious delicacies it is a pure delight. Not to be outdone is the wide selection of teas and tea cups from which to choose. Its worth a special trip, a fantastic gift and a wonderful treat for yourself

The Royal Tea Room is a local favorite of mine. This past weekend I had a mother/daughter tea there and like my past experiences walked away ready to plan my next tea there. Service is always friendly, food delicious and tea out of this world! I love the whole atmosphere, the old home with the antiques makes you feel like you are having a proper high tea and I always feel very 'ladies who lunch' there. It's a great place for a special event or just because. Thank you for keeping the Spirit of the Afternoon Tea alive and in La Plata!

Dee and her staff have always created the finest experience for me at the Royal Tea Room. It is cosy, charming and whimsical. True to form, the birthday tea for my mother was outstanding. The cream of crab soup was heavenly and the salad more than ample, the sandwiches, savory and sweet selections perfect. My mom is a coffee drinker, but after her pot of fruit-infused tea, she's now a convert! And just when I thought my favorite cranberry scones were never to be outdone, our minced fruit scones were a touch of perfection. I purchased some to take home to my husband! Make sure The Royal Tea Room is a regular treat for you.

Poor MJS from Mother's Day -- With all the fabulous reviews (mine included) it appears that the fault may lie with you, the customer, and not with the waitstaff. We went to the same 3pm seating you are referring to and it was wonderful. It ran smoothly and the food was to die for. What time did you arrive for a 3pm tea if you came back inside at 2:30? Perhaps you should arrive at the time of your reservation and you would be a lot less miserable.

It is always a treat when my husband or daughters take me to the Royal Tea Room. This past Mother's Day was no exception. The atmosphere, wonderful tea and food, and the friendliness of the servers was exceptional. The 3pm tea on Sunday did get started a little late, but it was clear the staff was busily preparing the rooms for our arrival and the wait was well worth it. I loved the Passion Mango Tea and the crab soup was terrific, as usual. The scones were to die for and I thought the selection of the savories and desserts was super. I think the three young ladies who served at the tea were great. They seated about 10 tables at the same time and before you knew it, we were all drinking tea and munching on a fruit plate that was really too pretty to eat. The servers all helped each other and were very polite and gracious. At one point or other during the tea, each one had visited our table, brought something, or inquired if we needed anything. At the end, the owner even visited our table. To me, that says a lot about the quality of the tea room. Not only will I go there again, I will recommend it to all my friends!!

I have been to the Tea Room on several occasions. I enjoyed it so much that I actually retained their services to host my Engagement Party. The food was nothing short of amazing and the location is top notch. The owner was most accomodating. We had mini chicken cordon bleus, meatballs, macaroni and cheese, green beans, etc. It was out of this world! Last Sunday, I attended the Mother's Day Tea Service. By definition, a tea service is not a quick event. We anticipated spending the afternoon there, which we did. The food was wonderful, as always. (Kudos to the Cream of Crab!) The Lady Grey tea is now one of my favorites and the scones were too good for words. (The blackberry preserves inside of the scones were absolutely delicious!) I particularly enjoyed the pretzel cups and candied walnuts. Our waitress was courteous and I never saw her without a smile on her face. I will remain a loyal patron to the Royal Tea Room until I am given a reason to be otherwise, which I don't see happening anytime soon. :)

I attended the Mother's Day Tea Service at the Royal Tea room and thought that it was superb. It was a full house that day and I was very surprised at the way the staff was able to handle such a rush, all beginning at three pm. The soup, scone and fruit plate was amazing. The tray of sandwiches and deserts was nothing short of phenomenal. There that day, I saw that the customer complaining of slow service had also arrived an hour early to the service, after having been given drinks and such outside were still seated earlier than their reservation of three pm. Perhaps that skewed their attitude on the entire event as I thought that everything went well that day. We will most certainly be back again, and we look forward to seeing the nice waitresses that are indeed more than capable of providing service to customers, and eating the wonderful food made by the kitchen.

This is my third trip to the Royal Tea House. My daughter and I have been each time and the food service has declined on each successive visit. I am going to go into detail in the hopes that the owner will review this and make the necessary adjustments to her tea house and staff. My daughter made reservations and prepaid for the 3pm Mother's Day Tea. We arrived early, and let them know that we would browse the shop and sit out on the front porch. A young lady said our table would be ready in 15 minutes. We were brought iced tea when we sat on the front porch, however, when it got too cold we went in. We arrived back in the entry room at 2:30. The tea rooms were empty and the staff was cleaning the tables from the earlier seating. We were seated at a table at 2:45 and were the first to arrive. The tea service was for 3pm. At 3:38 a waitress came and asked us what type of tea we would like. She went around to everyone in the front room and asked the same. About 15 minutes later tea was poured for us. No pot was left. I requested lemon. Ten minutes later, I stopped another waitress and asked her for lemon. About the same time the lemon arrived, the waitress made a second round with tea which was good because mine was stone cold from the wait. I asked if she would leave the pot, as that had been out experience in the past and she did bring us our own pot. The first fruit course arrived about 4pm. There was only one plate left for us and we had to stop someone to ask for a plate for my daughter. There was no sugar/sweetener, salt or pepper on the table and we had to ask for that. The soup was brought after that. We both ordered the wedding cake, and it was lukewarm at best with the meatballs cold in the middle. I did not comment on it, since my daughter was already uncomfortable with the service, and clearly embarrassed as she was the host on this occation. But she did ask me about it, and commented that hers was cold also. THe scones were good but hardly anything to write home about. The sandwich tray had some tasty tidbits, and some that had clearly been sitting out for a while as the croissants were stale and the crab was discolored. The desert dish was good, but once again, hardly worth the wait or the long service that we experienced. Each course was brought to all tables at the same time and there was no individual service to each table. Perhaps they had been so busy that they ran out of food, or time? It is hard to understand why we had to wait over 30 minutes for our first cup of tea....and had to waid so long between courses. As much as we have enjoyed our spotty visits to the Tea Room in the past, I think it is time for us to broaden our search. I wish the owner well as she/he tries to solve the kitchen and staffing problems. Clearly our waitress, Chelsea, I believe, is not suited to service to customers.

      Tearoom response:

I would like to offer my sincerest apology for your experience. The young lady is new to our staff and was evidently somewhat overwhelmed. I will speak to her and we will work on her difficulties.<BR> For yourself or any other customer please bring issues to my attention if you find either food or service to be inadequate. I can make corrections or adjustments to make the situation more equitable for the customer. As well as provide a training opportunity for an inexperienced employee.<BR> We thank you for your past businees as a customer and hope you find satisfaction in future experiences whether at the Royal Tea Room or another venue.<BR> For all customers we welcome reviews both positive and negative to gauge our progress. As a general courtesy I would prefer that individual employees not be named personally in a review. I do share these reviews with them and some of them visit this site on occasion. If the customer wishes to name an individual we can manage that discreetly in private or with a phone call. The young lady in question is a bright and kind individual and wants to do well, and I will continue to support her. <BR>

AS a party of 3 we visited the chariming Royal Tea House on Oct 16. It was a rainy cold day and the warmth of this tea house was so inviting. We had 3 pot of wonderful autumn teas. The homemade chicken and rice soup warmed the body. The almond cranberry scone was one of the best I have had. The diversity and amount of tea sandwiches was fanastic -a skewered shrimp coconut encrusted was my favorite along with slamon sald, tuna melt, egg salad, mini quicke, turkey cheese bacon, chicken dordon blue ball and a cheese mixture on pumpernickle. The desserts just finished off a well served and relaxing afternoon. We then spent some time visiting the different ventor spaces on the top level of this charming house. On July 24 our daughter treated us to an unexpected Victorian afternoon at the Royal Tea Room. Upon entering we took a step back in time with lace curtains, Damask tablecloths and napkins, and a feeling of tranquility. Our daughter arranged for the 'Royal Tea'. It started off with the most incredible cream of crab soup we have ever enjoyed. We spent 40 years in MD and never tasted crab soup that was so satisfying. The salad served with the soup was light and refreshing. The apricot scones were served warm and delicious. The presentation of warm savories, tea sandwiches, pastries and fresh fruit was a step back in time thru taste. Angela, our waitress, was charming, engaging, attentive and very informative. She was a definite asset to the whole experience. The teas we tried, Paris & Wedding, were aromatic & soothing, with Paris being our favorite. The entire afternoon has become a cherished memory. The atmosphere, pleasant service & delicious tea only beckoned to us to return. We did today & have come away with the same contented feeling. To all go and enjoy.

The down fall was, it seems that the owner has her grandchildren there. This was not our first time either, and had hoped that the children would not be there yet again. These children are allowed to run and ripe through this place without regard of it being a place of business. When we voiced our feelings to our waitress, who happened to be the mother of the children, told us we were free to leave if we wanted to.

I ordered a cup of the cream of crab soup and the Queen Elizabeth salad, and it was incredible, best crab soup I've ever eaten! The menu was very diversified and unique and the prices were very affordable. Overall, we had a wonderful time there, I highly reccommend going there, the food was awesome and the service that was offered there is hard to find anywhere else. I will be returning in the near future for the Royal Tea service.

I was home for a visit and a good friend of mine suggested we go to The Royal Tea Room. I loved it, we sat there for hours catching up. Atmosphere is so inviting and the food is great! I also loved picking out my own tea cup, felt like a little girl having a tea party. I will plan on going back my next trip home. I also had the pleasure of meeting Dee the owner, enjoyed speaking with her!! I've already recommended to several people.

I took my friend for her birthday for tea and we had the best experience. I have had a favorite tea room elsewhere, but you have such a nice high tea it's hard to beat. Your cream of crab soup alone is enough to bring in the customers. I love that your savories included unusual items like coconut shrimp, etc. I will be back this weekend with my daughter and plan to visit many more times to come. I had a Formosa Oolong (one of my favorite teas) that was very good. The atmosphere is very pleasant and what I expect from a tea room. Don't forget to visit the upstairs gift area - lots of neat things to see.

My husband and I stopped by the Royal Tea Room on our way home to New Jersey. A friend had recommended we try it, and I'm so glad she did! The food was out of this world! And I loved the spicy plum tea - what flavor! My husband had to drag me out of the rooms above, filled with antiques galore, so we could get back on the road. You can be sure we will stop back again on our next trip through LaPlata!

Recently had birthday lunch at The Royal Tea Room with my sister and her husband. The experience was extraordinary in every way - knowledgeable and very pleasant server, nice teas, delicious food. The scones were out of this world served with clotted cream and lemon curd. It's worth a visit just for the scones. But wait, cream of crab soup is a speciality and ranks among the best I've had! In addition to the fabulous food, my better half loved perusing the antiques and gifts upstairs. We'll definitely be back and recommend it to everyone.

My wife and I are occasional adventurers in that we open-mindedly explore and value exotic foods and cultures. Together we've developed a synchronous mode of desire for that which is atypical of western ambiance. Through a new friend, she had recently encountered a cafe rich in tasteful European-like culture and thought highly enough of it to share with me although, she was a bit concerned wondering if I'd appreciate the dainty atmosphere. Today (03/01/09) she lured me to a little venue that combines Southern U.S. hospitality with a hint of European sparkle. The Royal Tea Room located in La Plata, MD is a small cafe-like restaurant with a modest menu but poised with flavorful cuisine. The day was cold with a cast of medium gray clouds, preludiously looming in anticipation of snow. I couldn't help noticing the building's comfortably secluded location and its resemblance to a basic house. At first thought, I assumed 'bed and breakfast' but immediately upon entering into its rustic European interior, I was captured by an environment perfect for sociable gatherings. Immediately, I was greeted with a welcoming smile and an invitation to explore the facility while a table was being prepared. As we sat to eat, a darling young lady served us tea (I had the spearmint which is my favorite while my wife had orange cranberry) and a soup of thick flavorful cream and crab. The main entree was tilapia (either fried or broiled) accompanied by a broiled crab cake which was equally appetizing. Our meal was completed by a lemon cake for my wife and an ice cream topped brownie for me, which was no less than gratifying. The portions were perfect; the prices were very reasonable and the service was outstanding. To end the experience, the owner (also the hostess mentioned earlier) kneeled to chat with us. She was classy but down-to-earth, and genuinely friendly. Her staff displayed a professionalism that should be adapted by larger, more recognized restaurants and cafes. Though the business hours are short, (11am - 4pm on weekdays) it was explained that the Royal Tea Room is available for special occasions, upon request. The facility appears clean and well maintained. It has a fitting appeal for occasions ranging from a first date to special family gatherings. There is also a shop which to buy purses, shawls, soaps and tea among other extravagant little gifts. In sum, if you're looking for a restaurant with intimate, social qualities, then the Royal Tea Room in La Plata, MD is your ideal venue. P.S. for the owner: Don't forget the masculine tea pot covers for my next visit. :o)

I've been going to the Royal Tea Room since they opened. I continue to go because of the homey feel and the staff's attention to customer preferences. The owner is extremely open to customer thoughts and comments, which is refreshing. The overall tea experience changes with the seasons - different specials, new teas and an ecclectic mix of tea accessories and antiques that never stay the same. My English friends agree that the Royal Tea Room is the closest tea shop to those 'back home' in Southern MD, though they also noted there is a refreshing American twist - creative foods and 'non-standard' menu options. I have enjoyed everything from the superb salads and sandwiches, to the high teas. The cream of crab soup is superb, as is the bread pudding. The shop stocks Harney teas, exclsuively (I think), but there is a large variety to choose from. Don't go with pre-conceived ideas of how a tea shop should be - this is a mix of traditional and contemporary, Old World and New.

A customer told me about her young daughter's birthday party at the Royal Tea Room in LaPlata, and I instantly thought it would be a perfect venue for my sister's baby shower. Well, I was right. The ambiance (decor, lighting, scents) and the food (warm scones, splendid teas, savory treats) were wonderful, but the staff was perfect. They were SO polite and friendly; they were more than servers, they were pleasant young women! My sister said the shower was more than she had dreamed of (which wasn't much because it was all a surprise!), and most of the credit should go towards the lovely ladies of the Royal Tea Room. I cannot wait to bring my mom and sister back for our next celebration!

My sisters and I took my mother to the Royal Tea Room for her birthday and it was a very nice experience. We ordered the Royal Tea and boy was it lavish. The tea selection was huge, and we were impressed that our waitress remembered them all (though we would have liked to have had a list to look at). The cream of crab soup was awesome and the side salad was fresh and had a tasty dressing. We then received a very fresh and moist cranberry/almond scone with cream and curd, it was very tasty. After all of that we were stuffed, but no there was more! We then received a 3-tier of tea sandwiches, savorys, and sweets. Very nice selection, though the ham pate was a little salty and the crab puff a little dry...my favorite was the chicken salad on a homemade croissant. We tried 4 different teas during the 3 hours we were there, the traditional english breakfast and deejarling, but then we tried orange cranberry and spiced plum (very tasty!). We actually had two waitresses serving us, and they were very knowledgable and freindly. The owner of the Tea Room also came around to check on folks, which was a nice touch. Upstairs were three rooms of antiques, glassware, and jewelry. You could spend hours up there looking around! All in all, it was a lovely day...and we will definately go back!

I had heard many good things about the Royal Tea Room in LaPlata, MD so I decided to take a close friend of mine to try it out. The house was very beautiful, well decorated and made us feel like we went back in time (in a good way). Then we meet our waitress. Messy hair. Greasy Face. She asked us what we were having to drink. We ordered hot tea and asked for a listing of the tea selections (since there was no menu for the tea choices). She wouldn't tell us our options, she said first she wanted us to try a special tea that you can't buy anywhere else. I asked what kind it was and she just stared at me. I asked if it was supposed to be a surprise or something since she wouldn't answer me but then she sort of scoffed at me and told me that she was going to present it and go over what's in the tea and that if we didn't like it then she can give us something else. Then she came back several minutes later (with no tea) and took our orders. I asked for the 1/2 sandwich and tea cup soup meal which sounded good for the price and for my small appetite. The waitress informed me that the sandwich I wanted wasn't part of the offer because it was a hot sandwich. She said her mom should have made it more clear on the menu that you could only get a cold sandwich with the soup. So I said, 'That's fine I'll just have the soup then.' She said, 'Are you sure? You can still order the sandwich and the soup.' I said, 'No thanks, I'll just have the soup.' Then she said 'You could order the larger soup. The tea cup is pretty small.' I said 'No that's ok, I just want the small soup.' I wasn't that hungry anyway and I really wasn't interested in any of the other sandwiches and wasn't sure if I'd like the soup. Then she started arguing with me. She said, 'That's a big diffence between getting half a sandwich with soup to just getting that little cup of soup. Is it because you can't get that sandwich with your soup? Because you can still order the sandwich and soup seperate.' I said, 'Yeah well there's a price difference ordering it seperately and I won't be able to eat all of it anyway.' She said, 'Well you could take the rest home.' I said, 'I know that but I don't want that, I just want the soup.' Then she continued with, 'So this is a money issue huh?' I couldn't believe she said that to me and loudly too. It was embarassing. Especially after learning that she was the owner's daughter. I then told her for the last time that it was ok and I just wanted the soup. By the time she asked my friend what she wanted, she was disgusted by her behavior and didn't want anything. A few minutes later this same waitress went to the table behind us that was a bigger group and said really loudly, 'I'm going to be serving you the rest of your meal. My coworker was kind enough to switch tables with me.' While waiting a ridiculously long time for our tea we had to listen to her telling these people personal details of her life and how she's struggling to make ends meet with insurance issues and having a kid. Then finally a totally different waitress brought us the tea. We still didn't know what it was so we asked her. So much for the 'presentation'. The tea was actually very delicious and we loved it so much my friend and I bought some on our way out. Through out the rest of the meal however, it was very unpleasant. The first waitress was still being obnoxious and loud with the other table, saying how much she appreciated their big tip saying 'It's sad that we have to be all about money but money is what makes the world go round.' I felt embarassed again because of how she had implied earlier that I was cheap and then she was making a huge deal over the money with the other table. I've never been served by someone so unprofessional and rude as her before. I was going to plan my mother's birthday party to be at the tea room since she loves tea so much but I'm glad I tried it out first so we can spend our money at a more respectable environment. My advice to people going to the tea room: Make sure you bring 4 or more people and flash your money on the way in so you can be guaranteed good service since the management is so hard up for money.

      Tearoom response:

You have our sincere apologies regarding your recent experience. Your statements are accepted as matters of fact, and employee reprimands are forthcoming. This sort of behavior by a server won't be tolerated. Any customer should feel free to ask for supervision to intervene to rectify an uncomfortable situation, or make an adjustment after service. Again our apology is extended.<BR> Your situation was representative of the mistakes of one employee and don't, I feel, warrant your advice to future customers. I also won't tolerate attacks on personal appearance of an employee on a public forum. Rude behavior, unfortunately has been displayed on both sides of this transaction. I think we can mutually agree not to conduct future business.

This is not your usual prissy tea room. The Royal Tea Room is, no doubt, lovely, with delicious, well presented food, antiques surrounding their patrons, with rooms of antiques for sale above. You don't have to be dressed to the nines to enjoy yourself! If you want to drop in while running errands, do so! Of course, if you have friends for tea and want to dress, you will fit in fine, but if you are in jeans and a tee, you will not feel out of place! One of the things I really like about this tea room was the willingness to let us have as much tea as we wanted, and without having to remind the waitstaff. We tried 3 or 4 teas, with the Paris tea being as delicious as promised. The soups were good, the crab soup could have been warmer. The scones were delicious, but would have preferred to have it with the tea tray or even afterward, rather than first. Next time would definitely go for lunch (full size sandwiches, etc.) which looked wonderful. Music was very 40s and antiques and gifts were fun to browse (and buy). Would definitely go again. Nice job.

A friend and I visited this website yesterday looking for reviews on The Royal Tea Room. We immediately made a reservation for this afternoons lunch. Now, I have to say that I LOVE TEA! I have never visited an actual 'Tea Room', but my associate is a tea aficionado, LOL. She loves everything tea, service and all! We arrived to a very warm welcome. Dee takes such great care to make you feel at home. It is truly a pleasure to patronize a business that appreciates your business. Dee made sure to point out some of the restaurant favorites, in addition to giving us some ideas as to what we may enjoy based on our brief conversation. I chose the Indian Nimbu (the hint of caramel, hooked me, FAST). My friend chose a full bodied black tea...I can't remember the name of it. But both teas were fabulous. The wait staff was very busy, but attentive when we needed her. I would recommend a trip to The Royal Tea Room anytime! I plan on bringing my 7yo for tea next time. This would make a great mother, daughter, granddaughter outing.

My trip to the Royal Tea Room was definitely memorable. While the food was good and the tea selection was varied, the service was incompetent and rude. The afternoon tea started with the selection of tea cups. They had a wide selection, which I thought was very nice. I selected a small, delicate cup. One of the servers told me my cup looked childish, I did not realize that belittlement was part of afternoon tea. There was no vegetarian selection for the soup (understandable), but the waitress did not offer to substitute a salad for the soup course, so my vegetarian companion had to watch me eat the first course. When the tea tray arrived with our sandwiches, no explanation of the sandwich selection was offered, and when I inquired, the waitress could only guess as to the contents of the sandwiches. Further we were not offered plates at any time during the meal, so we had to eat our food off of our tea saucers; a very awkward arrangement. I have been to a lot of tea rooms, and have found cucumber sandwiches a staple of the tea menu. There were none at the Royal Tea Room which I found odd. Although the desserts were tasty, they appeared to be store bought. Honestly, I am a little surprised that this tea room is in the top 100.

      Tearoom response:

Thank you for your review of the Royal Tea Room. We are always open to favorable as well as less than favorable reviews so that we might be able to offer the best of services. Currently, we are making some changes to our service staff and your concerns and issues have been addressed to the staff. Also, if there are any special dietary needs or concerns, it is strongly suggested that those needs be addressed at the time of making a reservation for any of our Tea Services. We can accommodate any dietary need as long as we know in advance. We pride ourselves in being an innovative tea room and try to give a bit of a twist to the 'traditional' Tea Service, but if tradition is what you want, just let us know in advance. I would hope that you would give us another chance and visit again in the near future.

My experience at the Royal Tea Room was less than pleasant. Myself and two other guests entered the tearoom and gave the host the reservation name. At this time we informed them that one person from our party (of 4) was unable to attend. The host then proceeded to loudly scold us for not calling ahead to inform them of the change. With this the host took off into the kitchen and started barking commands and yelling that our party was 3 instead of 4. I was quiet unsettled by this overreaction. While we were waiting to be seated a waitress came out to the waiting area carrying clean silverware, which she then placed on the checkout counter next to the cash register. This is a surface where money is exchanged and items (mostly antiques) are purchased. A table was then set with this silverware. The poor service continued once we were seated. We received our pot of tea and no cream. We had to ask several times before we received cream. The first course of soup arrived which the waitress almost spilled on me. After soup we anxiously awaited the sandwiches and deserts. However they did not arrive and when we asked, our waitress said that we did not order them. We then had to get a menu and show the waitress that we did order the afternoon tea that included sandwiches and dessert. At this point our teapot was empty and we asked for a second pot, thirty minutes later we received our second pot of tea. Overall I found the service to be less than acceptable for a tearoom.

      Tearoom response:

I'm sorry that your experience wasn't enjoyable. Your comments were brought to the attention of all staff members, and no such incident will re-occur. For the benefit of yourself and future customers I would like to explain the process. The formal tea services with the exception of the Cream Tea require preperation time that would exceed the tolerance level of most people. This is why we require reservations for booking them. This allows us to prepare in advance and serve our guests promptly upon their arrival. When we have a late cancellation such as this case we are forced to discard a large portion of the unused service. Our margins as an afternoon only dining venue are very thin. We have not raised prices in the three years we have been in operation, there are significant inflationary pressures to do so. Customer notification of a problem such as this will help us to maintain our current price structure. Again, you have our sincere apology for your experience.

I am a military officer's wife and was unable to attend a function we had there. Dee very sweetly packed my lunch up in boxes for them to bring home to me - absolutely divine!!! My daughter and I went there yesterday and it was the best tea room I have ever been to and Dee was so wonderful. Will definitely be coming back soon!!

Visiting tea rooms is a hobby that I share with a few girlfriends. We made our first visit to the Royal Tea Toom on 04/06/08 and were very impressed. We would definitely put it in our top 3-5 tea rooms. Food, serice and atmosphere were beyond excellent! Definitely will come again.

I just read Elvie's comments and I think that she must have been talking about the wrong Royal Tea Room. Everything was bright and clean!!!! I'm a formal caterer that hosted many tea parties and know good food. The scones, the savories and the sweets were very tasty. Most tea houses don't offer tea menus. Normally, they tell you the teas that's being served that day. Don't listen to Elvie, you will miss a treat. Look at the other 5 star comments.

I just came to teamap.com to check in and am THRILLED and DELIGHTED to see may favorite Tea Room is now in the top 100. Woo Hoo. Congradualtions Dee and all the staff at the ROYAL TEA ROOM. I had lunch at the Royal Tea room on monday. I decided to be tea-adventurous and tried two new tea blends. I found them both to be TEAriffic! Indian Nimbo sweeten with a demi spoonful of honey was a lovely complimentary drink to my Chicken salad sandwhich. I choose the multigrain bread and tried the pasta salad side. Delish! I love the almond slices in the chicken salad. I decided to skip my usual scones for dessert and tried Dee's bread pudding. Here I thought I didn't like bread pudding. Just didn't sound like it be all that. Was I wrong. It is served warm! To go with the warm flavors of the Bread Pudding I tried Chocolate Tea. Perfection together. Both Tea's were suggested by Dee. Looking foward to another visit and another teapot blend. See ya soon. http://www.myspace.com/i_love_doxies

This was our Red Hat group's second visit to the Tea Room and it was perfect, as was the first visit. The atmosphere is charming and inviting. The 'shop' upstairs has many beautiful items. The food, service, etc., was great. Everyone had a different lunch entree and each raved about their choice. We had three different Teas and they were delicious. We will go back again!

I had high hopes for this experience after reading the reviews but was sadly disappointed. Although the decor is lovely I was put-off by the tired and sad state of the tea cozies that sat atop every pot. They need laundering and to be freshened up. The soup was delicious but the salad tasted like it had been sitting in water too long. When I mentioned that to the owner Dee I was given a too long disertation on salads and made to feel that I was mistaken. Dee spent a great deal of the time 'selling' herself and her establishment to us which didn't allow for our foursome to chat. I was surprised to find the owner in jeans and a gray sweatshirt on a Sunday afternoon greeting customers. Having had tea at many tea parlours across the country I rate my experience here as mediocre. The food was good (except for the salad) and not exceptional. There is no tea list and our waitress, although a charming young woman, spoke with a thick accent so it was difficult to understand the offerings. I wouldn't go out of my way again to visit the Royal Tea Room.

      Tearoom response:

I am sincerely sorry that you did not enjoy your visit with us.

This has to be the best tea room I have had the pleasure to visit. After visiting the Ritz Carlton in Tysons, the Westfields Marriott, the British Pantry, and many other local tea rooms in Maryland & Virginia, the Royal Tea Room far exceeds them all. We were greeted by the owner upon our arrival and were invited to visit the upstairs antique and gift shop rooms where there were many beautiful things to purchase. (I bought several beautiful bone china plates!) We then went downstairs and picked our cup/saucer from the selection on the bookshelf. The tea choices were excellent (Harney & Sons, need I say more!) and we were then brought a fresh pot to the table to share. Our first course, the cream of crab soup was superior. Next came the 'large' fresh baked almond, apricot scone served with cream and lemon curd. The two tiered tray came next. Freshly prepared tea sandwiches and mini pastries including cream puffs, fresh fruit, petit fours & more rounded out the selections. The service was exemplary and another fresh pot of a different tea choice was brought to our table. I cannot recommend this tea room enough. The owner and staff are friendly and very accomodating. My friends and I will be returing soon and bringing our other tea drinking friends with us. Go to the Royal Tea Room at soon you can; you won't be sorry.

I didn't really know what to expect when first visiting the Royal Tea Room. I was surprised to find that not only did they have a nice assortment of teas, but some very nice accompanying dishes as well. A peppermint tea goes well with the seafood duet of grilled tilapia and shrimp, or perhaps a fresh cup of French pressed coffee with a chicken cordon bleu wrap seems to be the perfect combination for lunch time.

I took a group of young ladies, ages 8-16, from my church in December 2005. This was a first-time visit to a Tea Shop for them. They were reluctant to go. However, they joined me and had a WONDERFUL experience. They've asked to return again for this upcoming December. Truly, the entire experience was excellent, from the lunch, to the service to speaking with the owner. And of course, the young ladies got a kick out of being able to choose their own tea cups and teas. M. Lewis Redeeming Hearts Outreach Ctr 12/05

I visited the Royal Tea room yesterday for the first time. We booked the Royal Tea in honor of my grandmothers birthday. The tea room itself we found to be absolutely beautiful. It was very nicely decorated. In fact, most of the decorations could be purchased right off the wall. As far as the food and the tea, I was very impressed. I suggest to all who go there to order the cream of crab soup, it was the best I have had in a very long time. One last suggestion would be to visit the antique shops and the tea shoppe located within.

This was my third visit to the tea room. The first being when it was being renovated (a friend was helping). At that time it certainly did not look like it was going to be anything much. But in reality it is quite charming. The owner is very gracious and the chef certainly knows her way around a kitchen. The menu is quite extensive as are the kinds of teas served. The desserts were delicious. The antique/collectible rooms are quaint and charming. The next time my friends and I visit I think we'll make reservations for 'high tea'. Can't wait!

My husband and I stopped by the tea room one Saturday afternoon after running errands around town. We were wearing jeans. We had never been in before, but love to shop for antiques, so we gave it a try. We weren't sure they would let us in dressed the way we were, but figured we could look at the antiques anyway. When we came back from looking around upstairs, which has beautiful antiques , we were greeted by the owner. She was so friendly and asked if we would like to have a table. We decided to try it out, I must say I was concerned we were going to feel out of place in our attire. The whole staff was very nice. There was a party going on and no one even noticed us. I wish we had of been placed in a room other than where the party was taking place, because it was a little loud, but the guests were having so much fun, you could tell it was an experience of a life time. We had tea and dessert. It was delicious. I thought the cost of the desserts were a little high, but after eating, it was worth the price. We had a fun hour and 1/2, we got to pick our own tea cups, and look at all the hard work that had been put into fixing up the place. After we were done, we purchased an antique tea pot and talked with the owner. She gave us the history of the home and told us about all the work put into it. We were very pleased with our visit and plan to go back again soon. I am so glad to see such a nice place in a town that hasn't seen much more than fast food since I was just a kid myself.

My friends and I visited the Royal Tea Room today. We had learned about it from a very favorable article in The Washington Post. The food was absolutely fantastic! Everything was beautifully presented, delicious, and fresh. We had the 'royal tea' which included soup, salad, scone (delicious cranberry scones), tea sandwiches (four varieties for each of us), four savories for each of us, and four sweets for each of us. The variety of teas was not as large as it might have been because it had been a very busy day for them, but still we enjoyed the teas that we had. Prior to having our tea, we browsed through the rooms that they have devoted to antiques and collectibles for sale - that was fun. The place is beautifully restored - you can tell that the owner has put a lot of hard work and love into it. We spent a leisurely 3 hours lingering over our tea, and were not rushed to leave even though the place was busy. Also, we complimented the chef at the end of the day.

On my first visit to this tea room over the summer, there was a hair in the devonshire cream on the plate with my scone. It was very obvious. Service was poor so I had to wait outside the kitchen door to get new cream. Today I decided to give this tearoom another chance. Upon entry, my mother and I were yelled at by the owner to close the door because of a fire truck passing by. I guess she thought she was being helpful or possibly funny, but it was extremely rude to tell customers right when they enter to 'Close the door! Close the door!' Also we were constantly reminded of how short of help they were. When we were finally seated, I asked for a list of teas and I was told there was a list but it was easier for them to tell me what they had as they were practically out of everything. The server seemed quite put out when I asked him to name the teas that were available. Service was very slow. I do understand that businesses do, for one reason or another, become short of help, but thats all I heard from those that were there. People don't need to be constantly reminded. The tearoom was very loud, voices carrying easily and echoing around the room. The owner appears to speak loudly naturally as I remember her voice being extraordinarily loud from my first visit. This is unsettling especially when one would like to sit and have a quiet afternoon cup of tea and relax. The most enjoyable part was when the cook came out to give a little talk on the history of tea to the group seated near us. I doubt I'll go back.

I brought a friend who is a vegetarian and the made her cream of broccoli soup on the spot. She said it was the best she had ever had! I simply can't wait to enjoy a Royal TeaRoom tea again!

What a perfect afternoon for my houseguest and me! We didn't even order tea, but had a late lunch of crab soup and sandwich, scones, and dessert. Everything was delightful and delicious. The multi-grain bread used for my tuna salad sandwich was perfect, as was the tuna salad. My friend's lemon curd and cream on scone were dreamy. The crab soup was rich and hearty and oh so tasty. It was all beautiful. Then we spent the rest of an idyllic afternoon visiting the five rooms of antiques and gifts, finding one-of-a-kind gifts for ourselves and our friends. This is not a 'stop by if you're in the neighborhood' kind of place; the Royal Tea Room is a destination in itself. The great old 1929 house seems to be just made for everything the owners are doing there. There's no need to search any further. This is the place.
