The Sweet Afton Tea Room and Restaurant is a smoke- free tea room, presented in British tradition, serving savories, sweets and heartier fare. Our teas are imported from London and are served in a personal teapot. The Sweet Afton Tea Room and Restaurant has a long legacy of creating wonderful times and memories that connect generations. The original restaurant was established by Sylvia Thacker and opened on December 1, 1988 on Mill Street in Plymouth’s Old Village. She decorated the tea room with the 19th century Welsh hutch as well as an old National cash register and an antique display case which are all still in use. The Sweet Afton Tea Room was named after the Afton River in Ayrshire, Scotland. The river is known the world over because of the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns. His poem Sweet Afton, written in 1791, is a lyrical poem describing the River Afton. The poem was presented by Robert Burns to Mrs. General Stewart of Slair in 1791 and was inspired by her home Afton Lodge in Ayrshire on the banks of the Afton River. The Mary in the poem probably refers to Mary Campbell, whom Burns courted in 1786. The poem was later set to music as “ Flow Gently Sweet Afton” and is sung to the tune of the popular Christmas Carol Away in a Manger. Many artists have performed it over the years, including the progressive acoustic trio Nickel Creek in 2000. In 1990, Christine Banion and Norma Reynolds purchased the tearoom and moved it to a larger building at the current gaslight street location at 450 Forest Avenue in historic downtown Plymouth. The new owners immediately created the unique tea cup chandeliers which continue to illuminate the dining room. In May 1997, Sweet Afton Tea Room was sold to Cynthia Belanger, a Sweet Afton employee, and her mother Nancy Burton. They ran the tearoom and restaurant until 2005 when they sold it to another Sweet Afton employee, Mary Ann Rye and her son Scott. The Rye’s ran the tearoom until April 2008, when Phyllis and Al Wilkerson, retired educators, purchased the establishment. They are working hard to keep the history and legacy of the Sweet Afton Tea Room and Restaurant in place. The Wilkerson’s goal is to continue the tradition of serving excellent home cooked food and offering an outstanding tea drinking experience with a personal touch to each patron. Our three daughters have fondly enjoyed the 'china and linen' tea experience at Sweet Afton's Tea Room for the past 15 years. They have celebrated bridal showers, baby showers and have enjoyed high tea here on many occasions. It is always wonderful. The long history of creating memories that connect generations of families is why we are happy to share our special place with you and your friends and family. Phyllis and Al Wilkerson Owners

Was looking forward to having tea here with my girls, unfortunately they don't serve brown people with nappy hair. I chose this one because nowhere on the website did it say a reservation was required for Saturdays, I wouldn't have wasted my time driving 25 min if it did. We arrived about a half hour after they opened and even though there were several empty tables we were told there was no space for 3 and reservations are required for Saturday.

My husband and a male and female cousin visited this tearoom last Saturday. I had visited once before, but they had not. The staff was so friendly and gracious that we all were impressed. My cousin had the Shepherd's Pie while the rest of us had the full afternoon tea. The food was excellent and sufficient to appease our hunger. The true highlight of our experience was meeting and talking sports and of course tea with the owner Al. All of my guests were very impressed! We live in Virginia, but we will definitely visit again soon.

      Tearoom response:

Sharon, It was really nice chatting with you and your group. That is what I find fascinating about owning a tea room. There are so many interesting customers from all over the world with lots of knowledge to share. You are very fortunate that will drive you all over the country visiting tea rooms, but you are having fun making memories. I hope to see you again soon! Thanks again to your cousin for choosing us for lunch. Al

Lovely tea room. The teas are wonderful. My sister-in-law and I used to take my Mother-in-law here and it was one of her favorite places. The high tea is wonderful and very filling. Absolutely love the scones and clotted cream. You will not go away hungry. Everyone there is lovely and always a joy to talk with.

      Tearoom response:

Lori, thank you for your kind words and making beautiful memories at our tea room. It is a special generation connecting place. Come and see us again.

I have been going to the Sweet Afton Tea Room for years now and go there for lunch at least once a month with my girlfriends. I have taken my mother, my grandmother, and anyone else I have ever wanted to impress, to Sweet Afton and they have all loved it. The servers have always been friendly and efficient, even when the place is packed. I never pass up on ordering a scone for dessert, they are the best I have ever had and that lemon curd--don't even get me started. The variety of tea pots they have is just amazing, I don't think I have ever gotten the same one twice. I highly recommend Sweet Afton to anyone who likes good food and nice things.

      Tearoom response:

      Kathleen,
Thank You for your kind comments and for your loyalty to this tea room. It has been around for 25 years and the traditions continues with your patronage. We are merely the caretakers for this generation connecting tea room. Thank You again!
Phyllis and Al Wilkerson

I recently visited this tearoom with my mother and two young boys. We all had a very pleasant time. My boys were glad to have their own special teapots (of milk and apple juice)and food that they recognized and like. The tearoom is surrounded by small business so this would make a nice all day destination. The food was good and the atmosphere very welcoming.

      Tearoom response:

      Rachel,
Thank you for bringing your BOYS into the tea room. It is truly not for just the ladies. We find that many of our young men make this a 'come back to place' once they have experienced it. Also thank you for making lifelong memories with their Grandmother in our tea room. Generational connecting is a valued event. When they get older they will reminisce about ' Remember when we went to the tea room with Mom and Grandma'

A stop at Sweet Afton's Tea Room was a planned part of our ladies road trip in Michigan. Thanks to TeaMap, we were able to experience the ultimate in afternoon tea in a State we were unfamiliar with. We cannot say enough about this wonderful tea room! The attention to detail was so impressive. We were asked the strength of the tea we desired -- weak, medium, or strong, and it was delivered piping hot, just as ordered. Everything was served at the perfect temperature, from the scones to the mini-quiche bites. All food items were fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was calm and very welcoming after a long drive. We were fortunate enough to meet the owner, Al Wilkerson. We had a lovely chat with him about the history of the tea room and how he and his wife, Phyllis, came to own it. He was kind enough to take pictures of us out front of the tea room, as well. Four ladies from California, with many, many tea experiences, statewide and abroad, vote a big 'thumbs up' on this wonderful jewel of a tea room in Michigan!

I drove from Grand Rapids to try this tea shop. Sadly, it wasn't worth the effort. The four tea sandwiches were unattractive and mediocre. The two 'quiches' were actually about 1-inch squares of quiche (quite good). The two scones were pale and unappetizing looking. The cranberry scone was loaded with berries, but the plain scone tasted heavily of flour and couldn't quite decide if it was a sweet scone or savory. The two tiny tarts were quite tasty and the best thing about the tea service. I ordered my favorite Darjeeling tea, and found it somewhat bitter, possibly due to overbrewing or too much tea for the pot size. I'm frequently in the area on business, but if I return to Sweet Afton, it won't be for afternoon tea. Food at the other tables looked quite good and I'd be happy to try something else. I take tea, on average, 1-2 times per month all over the country as I travel, and this well-meaning shop doesn't measure up to my expectations in quality or value for the price.

The only 'negative' is that the tea sandwiches were 'average'. too skimpy. Every other 'course' was terrific! tarts, scones, tea, etc. were great. Staff was attentive and helpful. Love the teacup chandelier and sconces.

I visited (again) after Christmas and had a delightful lunch with two friends. I didn't like the soup oferrings but chose the bean and sausage as the best of 'two evils' and it WAS THE BEST BEAN SOUP and the only time I have really liked a version of any bean soup- I ate it all. The tea sandwhiches are always fun and the lemon tart was yummy. Only suggestion I would have is to have tea warmers as my Tea got chilled. WE HAD A GREAT TIME AND WILL BE BACK AGAIN!

Tomorrow is Sweet Afton Tea Room's 23rd birthday! Sylvia Thacker opened her 'wee tea room' in Plymouth's Old Village on December 1, 1988. This began a legacy that has been helped to connect many generations. Thank You Sylvia and Thank You to all of our customers over the last 23 years in making what Sweet Afton Tea Room is today!

      Tearoom response:

My mom and I were looking for a place to host a baby shower for my sister-in-law. We wanted a place that was elegant and refined. Nothing is more refined than having a tea party for ladies. The staff was so friendly and helpful. They made sure that all of our guest had a wonderful experience. Phyllis and Al went out of their way to make sure that the day was a success. The food was delicious and elegant. And the tea was so delicious and there were so many choices to narrow down too. So many of our guests commented that this was the nicest baby shower that they had ever been to. The new baby was 'showered' with so many gifts that we needed some extra time to open all the gifts. Phyllis and Al were so kind to let us stay longer. Thank you so much for making the celebration of the newest member of our family a joyous occasion! Can't wait to come back again soon! :-)

This our favorite indulgence. The food is great the tea is never ending and the atmosphere is perfect. Our family went to England a few years ago and this tea room would fit in perfectly. We also spend a good 1-1/2 to 2 hours everytime we visit and it's worth every minute. Tea perfection!

What I had for lunch was very pricey also misleading. It states a choice of 4 sanwiches, but you only get 2 cut in half, then this is what should be stated. Also had a cup of soup that should have included the muffin we had to pay extra.

I am totally amazed by a couple of these reviews. My friends and I eat lunch here at least twice a month when we are shopping in Plymouth. I also hosted a friend's baby shower and have attended three other bridal and baby showers here in the last two years. They have always been excellent and the owner Phyllis always goes the extra step to insure satisfaction with everything.Something they are doing must be right, because last Friday afternoon, they were getting set up for a Friday evening shower because their Sunday dates were tough to get. I love Sweet Afton's - don't change a thing with this 20 year old classic!!

I went to a large birthday party hosted at Sweet Afton Tea Room and the food, presentation, service and atmosphere were outstanding. I went again with just my family this past week and it was awful. We each had the high tea and it came with almost no food. Compared to the high tea we were served at the birthday party, this was about 50% less. The first course were two quiche bites which were literally not even 1 inch by 1 inch. The tea sandwiches were so thin that we couldn't distinguish whether they were chicken salad, egg salad, or the garden herb cream cheese that we had ordered. The bread was so thin that it looked like they had sliced one slice of bread in half and then ironed it to make it that thin. The tea and the varieties of tea were excellent. The service was not the greatest despite the fact that there were only two other tables being used at the time. The birthday party was outstanding and made us want to come back, but the quality of our return trip was really disappointing. I have traveled the country and been to dozens of tea rooms. This tea room is overpriced and they don't give nearly as much food as they should. I can't believe that this is one of the top rated tea rooms in Michigan. It ranks as the 7th or 8th best that I have been in the state (out of 8).

We recently had my daughter's baby shower here and it was a wonderful experience. I heard several guests comment that it was the nicest shower they had ever been to and I would have to agree! The decor is antiquey with a touch of femininity and they were totally accomodating to us adding a few extra decorating touches of our own, and even helped a bit. The food was so good and so attractive and served on such pretty dishes and silver platters. The teacups and pots were gorgeous and nostalgic. The wait staff was wonderful; extremely courteous and efficient and served everyone in a timely fashion and best of all they were so easy to work with and not demanding on how we ran the shower, working around us rather than us working around them. I would highly recommend this place to everyone especially if you want a personalized feeling for your special event.

My husband surprised me with a 30th birthday surprise party, and after taking the blindfold off, revealed 30 of my friends and family sitting in the Sweet Afton Tea Room. I have been going to the Sweet Afton Tea Room for almost 20 years now. I am constantly impressed with the level of service and food. I was in this past weekend and again had a wonderful experience. I used to come as a young girl and now I have the joy of taking my daughter (2 years) and my son (4 years). The wait staff were so sweet to my kids (I love it when they oogle and fawn over them, and they always do!). I'm always nervous to take my kids into restaurants (their ages lend them to be a bit unpredictable), and I'm even more nervous to take them into an establishment like the tea room, however we have always been welcomed. I believe it is due to the fact that the owners have grandchildren of a similar age. Its always fun to talk with the owners about their own grandchildren. In fact, it is the owners more than anyone who fawn over my children! Etiquette lessons for my 4 year old son have started just simply from our visits (thank you Phyllis!). I will continue to come to the tea room as I always feel welcome, the food is excellent and the service is commendable!

      Tearoom response:

I went to the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce for a recommendation for a place for a light lunch for my friend a me and they recommended the tea room. I had my second visit to the Sweet Afton Tea Room yesterday--only this time I returned with my husband and two sons ages 16 and 12. They had no idea what a tea room would be like and were immediately encouraged that they 'would survive.' They were won over pretty easily by the friendliness, not only of the staff, but also the owners who probably do not serve too many teenage boys. My oldest ordered the chicken pot pie and was as impressed with it as I thought he would be--it is really probably the most delicious meal I have ever had in a restaurant! He also tried the blueberry tea and finished off the whole pot!. It took the second course of the high tea to convince my younger son. The scones were perfect--and the tarts--icing on the cake! I must also mention--we all loved the fabulous Ayrshire Cream. . .it is worth the trip just to try this dessert! What a wonderful way to introduce them to some of the finer things in life--and have a memorable afternoon together. Thank you Phyllis and Al for helping the boys fit in with your warm hospitality!

Today was my birthday and also the day i graduate middle school. My mom asked my where i wanted to go for lunch the Sweet Afton was a personal favorite of mine and so that's exactly where we went. The last time i went there it was under different ownership and the service had been awful, but the new owners have perfected it's old flaw's. The waiter was friendly and kind and always smiling, and the owners came wright up to us and asked what we thought of everything. Not to mention the perfect food. I ordered the plowers lunch. It's assortment of cheeses and thick tomato soup was Delicious with a warm french bread. My mother had the shepherds pie. She thought it was wonderful but could have used a tad more gravy, and of course I'm forgetting the best part the teas. I had the Lady Grey tea which was just fabulous and my mom had a Apple Cinnamon sweet tea which is her favorite as well. Finally we got to desert. i had a warm scone and mom had butter tarts which reminded both of us of are childhood. Me of sweet grandmas home in Canada and mom of her nans Scottish tarts. All together we had a lovely time and enjoyed every second. I forgot to mention the new look of the place. The old owners had it overly crowded with to many shelves and ornate dishes now it's a much calmer space with much less to distract you form what a good time your having. This restaurant deserves the number one rank in Michigan it already has. A FIVE STAR RATTING ALL THE WAY!

A MUST! The tea room is a great combination of delicious homemade food, specialty teas, friendly staff, and a relaxing ambiance that makes the time there a place for great conversation and memories. It is a weekly tradition in our household and has been a wonderful place to bring friends, family, and children. The owners, Phyllis and Al deliver unique care to their customers, greeting them by name, chatting at your table, and entertaining children with the 'Al's magic coloring book.' I hosted a baby shower for my girlfriend and it was delightful. Our guests were wowed by the charming atmosphere and delicious food. It was also very reasonable. The Afton team's service made sure we could focus on the honoree and we did. See the pics I posted. I read some of the reviews regarding portions. We go weekly to the tea room and never leave hungry. We start with soup, tea, an entree and are treated to a delicious dessert to finalize things. The wellington is my favorite and I never tire of it. Our tea pot is refilled constantly (or offered) and with the instrumental music in the background, we feel serenity when there. If you are looking for a reasonable meal, amazing tea, and a charming experience, with service that will delight...visit Sweet Afton's. I promise you will be back and bringing others with you!! It is the gem of Plymouth, Michigan.

I visited this tea room during my search for a location for a baby shower. I was very disapointed in the food and tea. We were given one pot of tea to share and were not offered a refill. The tea sandwiches were skimpy and pretty much just bread and cream cheese. The scone was hard and brown on the bottom. The amount and quality of the food and tea were lacking compared to other tea rooms I have visited. Not impressed.

I was just thinking about the Tea Room and had to look you up and say hello. When I was a student at East Middle School, my mom and I discovered Sweet Afton after one of my longer physical therapy sessions at Hands On, just around the corner. We ducked in and fell in love, visiting the shop almost every week. 15 or so years later, I still remember our visits to Sweet Afton VERY fondly, and try to visit when I come back home to MI, though it doesn't always happen. And when I want dessert, I STILL crave the mini tart plates! Oh if only I had the recipes, lol. So keep up the great work, I'm glad to see that you're still a Plymouth fixture!

We drove a long distance to go for an afternoon tea. We waited 15 minutes before we were pffered the opportunity to order. Tea was good but we would have liked a refill of our teapot, which was not offered until well into the meal. Overall, food was good but service was not.

Delicious food and a charming atmosphere. If you are coming on Friday or Saturday, make sure you reserve ahead or you might not get in. This past Saturday, the host had to tell many walk- ins that there were no tables available. I have been coming here for about 5 years and the new owners have really made it a friendly place to have lunch with friends. I will keep coming back!

I met a businees associate here for lunch yesterday to discuss some future plans. What a perfect location! I food was very good and I had a very tasty dessert called the Ayreshire Cream. It was a very homey place with great service. I will use this as a meeting place again with clients.

What a great find in downtown Plymouth. This charming little restaurant/tearoom was just the place I needed to find to relax and have a pleasanr lunch. I ordered assorted tea sandwiches and a cup of soup then began a book reading lunch that soothed my soul. Both owners came by separately to introduce themselves and to make sure everything was to my satisfaction. That kind of attention rarely happens anymore. My server was very knowledgeable and made some great suggestions for dessert. I have found a new favorite place to take my friends even though it is a twent mile drive. Sweet Afton's, you made my day.

Recently had lunch here on a very busy Saturday with friends. There were no empty tables during our whole time dining. Nothing fancy here, just good home cooked food at very reasonable prices. The quiche and soup with the Robert Burns entree was excellent. I will be recommending this to all of my friends. We traveled from Toledo and will be back soon. The waitress said that the owners are building a similar new restaurant in downtown Adrian. That will be a lot closer destination. We can't wait.

My husband and I visited this tearoom yesterday (we live about an hour away) and were making a day of it...headed to IKEA. The food was very good but the portions were small. I had the stuffed pepper soup, which was very tasty but I could definitely have eaten more soup than was in the small bowl. We also, had delicious scones but they were very small. I make larger scones and everyone seems to appreciate that. I tasted the quiche my husband ordered and it was very good. He enjoyed his licorice tea. I ordered green Mandarin orange and it tasted more like spearmint...not sure why. The owners were very kind and welcoming. Again, the food was wonderful just portions were way too small. The tea room was full the entire time we were there so apparently people enjoy eating at and visiting this tearoom. This is more of a 'cute' tearoom than a victorian tearoom, which is what we are accustomed to.

Atmosphere-A+! I enjoyed apricot tea with cream in a lovely English teaset from 1840! I had Shepards Pie and my friend had the finger sandwiches. Both were WONDERFUL! Service was VERY good! However my ONLY complaint was the scones were so small (about the size of a tiny biscuit) and VERY overpriced! 15 dollars for only 6 tiny scones. I found this a bit odd, since their lunch menu is so reasonably priced and delicious. Me and my friend are going to bring our husbands here for lunch next time. We know they guys will love the Victorian England environment and now they have a place to wear their top hats and capes! lol. I highly recommend this lovely place for some of the BEST tea and lunch. Definitely a place to bring someone you'd like to impress!(Just get scones elsewhere).

      Tearoom response:

First of all thank you for your very nice review and thank you for noticing our “reasonable prices”. Please understand our dilemma, as we attempt to hold down prices in this tough economy. Double digit increases in the prices for milk, eggs, flour, fruits, nuts, etc. as well as energy costs have had an effect on our restaurant budget as well as in your home. For the condiments for our scones, we have also experienced a tremendous increase in the cost of importing our Devonshire cream.
It has been a conscious decision of ours to NOT increase prices. One of the ways to do this was to try some portion control in certain areas. I regret that one of these areas was to resize our tasty scones.
With our uncertain economy, this is happening in many places. Over the past few years, even Girl Scout cookies have gotten smaller in size while the boxes have gone up in price. They even announced that they are decreasing the number of cookies in each box of my favorite Thin Mints. We continue to search for the correct balance.

Please introduce yourself when you bring your husbands in and we thank you for visiting our tearoom.

Sincerely

Phyllis and Al Wilkerson
My husband and I stumbled upon Sweet Afton Tea Room one day in November, quite by accident. While walking past the quaint and inviting window, I peered inside and that was all it took, we were absolutely drawn to go inside and have lunch. We were warmly welcomed, not only by our Hostess, but by the charming and quaint chandeliers made of tea cups, by the music playing in the background and by the gorgeous Victorian decor throughout. Sweet Afton's has an easy to understand menu, full of delicious surprises to choose from and the most delicious tea we've ever had! We chose the 'house' tea, Orange/Cinnamon and were absolutely blown-away by the flavor and aroma, just delicious! My favorite, Quiche Lorraine, was on the menu and I was so happy to find that it was as delicious as I had hoped! Entrees were served with a light and airy cheddar muffin which was to-die-for as well! Everything from entrees to extraodinary desserts (including Scottish shortbread) was perfect in every way and the presentation was magical. We were also delighted to meet the owner, Al Wilkerson, who explained the history of the Tea Room as well as treating us like royalty. Al is a very, very nice gentleman and he even remembered me the next time I visited! That is rare! The Sweet Afton Tea Room was indeed a treasure found on a rare day off from work for me. It changed a regular day into something very special for my husband and for me. That was the beginning of a new tradition in our family as next, I took my youngest daughter and my mother in as a 'Mystery Trip' and both were as delighted as I was! The three generations had a lovely and memorable time, we even took pictures to capture the moment...what a lovely afternoon that was too! To finish my rather long review of this 'Treasure', as a Lifestyle Director for Grand Court Farmington Hills, I have scheduled a 'Ladies Mystery Trip' for my ladies and will be visiting again with my bus full of ladies in about two hours! I can hardly wait to see their faces as they experience the Sweet Afton Tea Room. I know that they will love it as I do! Don't miss this true treasure!

Just this past Teusday I spent my day at the wonderful Sweet Afton Tea room with my mother, three aunts, two cousins and my grandpa. This has been my first visit, and after that one visit I know I should visit more often. The tea room is elegant and cozy with decorative teapots and teacups all around to get the real feel of a true tea party. I felt like I was in a fairytale sipping delicious tea surrounded by the people I love. It's good to know that there are still welcoming tea houses still around. There really should be more places like these. I had a wonderful time at the Sweet Afton tea room and when I was asked to do this review I was so excited to tell all of you how beautifully pleasent the sweet afton tea room is.

      Tearoom response:

When I called to make a reservation, I was left on hold for 9 minutes. I had to hang up and call back. My scone was more like a biscuit and was overcooked. The tea sandwiches were quite bland and contained much more bread than filling. The biggest issue was the service. We were seated near the kitchen and had to listen to the staff bemoan the fact that we had ordered the high tea and watch as they continually poked their heads over the door to view the dining room and its occupants. It was actually quite unnverving. For my money, the Victorian Tea Room in Wyandotte is much more customer friendly and the food, atmosphere, and service is far superior. The only personable individual we came in contact with was an older gentleman who was quite solicitous.

      Tearoom response:

      Micki,
I checked our Comcast phone log and yes somehow you were accidentally left waiting for 8 minutes at 10:57am. My server said that our New Years Eve reservation of 15 began arriving at our 11:00am opening as she was going to the phone and somehow she just forgot. I remember you both well because you both looked very unhappy when you arrived. To refresh your memory, we were just resetting the dining room after a very crowded 2 hours and I asked you if you would like to wait a few minutes until we could reset a table near the front or seat you now at the table near the kitchen. I apologize for any inappropriate playful remarks about ordering a high tea. The two in the kitchen were truly remorseful with their 'goofing around statements'. Your criticism of the food could have been corrected immediately if you would have just told your server or me. This is done every day. This is called good customer service. Also, I believe I inquired (I am the solicitous older gentleman) many times if your meal was OK because you looked so unhappy. Your response was that everything was OK with no hint of a problem. We may not GET it right every time, but we do correct things to MAKE IT RIGHT EVERYTIME. I have called you at least 6 times to offer you and your friend a chance for us to correct a mistake with a complimentary meal or treat you to a meal at another tea room. You have not responded as fast as your same day negative comments on Tea Map. I also become very suspicious of your intent when you use the same space to be critical of us, and then promote another very fine tearoom. It seems very inappropriate on your part to even mention them when you haven't even taken the time to add a positive review for The Victorian Tea Room in Wyandotte on their Tea Map site. Furthermore, this is also a tea room that we recommend to a lot of our Plymouth area customers.

If you would like to discuss our matter further, please call me. If not, thank you for your review. It has been shared with our staff and used as a teaching tool for making corrections in our dining room.
Micki, we have not received our many positive customer recommendations and increasing sales in this poor economy by serving poor food and having poor customer service. I am truly sorry for your experience. Please give us another chance.

Thank you for your business and have a great 2010.

Sincerely,
Al Wilkerson - Owner
My cousin and I came here for lunch - it was wonderful! The decor is lovely, very charming. The food was great, more than I could eat. And, they do what most places don't do with their tea - they remove the tea leaves after the tea has steeped, which means that the tea never gets bitter. I wish all tea rooms would do this. The new owners are wonderful - Al chatted with us for quite a while, and on learning that I live in South Carolina, gave me the name of a great BBQ place that I am eager to try. He also told some stories about the tea room and some of the collectables, and treated us with a tasting of one of their favorite desserts. I'm in MI often, and I know I'll return to this tea room again and again.

Phyllis and Al, In April of this year, we had my sister's bridal shower in your tearoom. It was absolutely marvelous! The food was amazing, the decor was very beautiful, and the staff was so helpful. Phyllis and Al were both amazing as well. My sister and I lost our mother at a young age, and we felt that you both were looking out for us like our mom would. Phyllis is a warm, caring person. We both felt as though Phyllis knew exactly what we were feeling. Both of them made the day go by with little planning, and no concern about things being done the right way. I loved the tearoom, and was a little sad I didn't know about it for my own shower. All of the decorations are carefully picked from the heart, and all fit together. Thank you again!

I hosted a bridal shower of 15 people at Sweet Afton, the owners Al and Phyllis were so hospitable and friendly, I think they really added to the personality of the experience. They came out to chat with us, and they gave a special gift to the bride-to-be, also. We started out with some strawberry punch which was very yummy. The food was very good, especially the scones, they were scrumptious! I also really like their mini-savories, we each had 3 a piece, I would have liked more, but then perhaps I'm usually used to 'super-size' portions. The food was served very artistically and the finger sandwiches were flavorful. I can't wait to go back there again!

Recently I visitd with my brother. We needed to talk over some family business and thought it would be a quiet lunch. They had lost our reservation, even though I had confirmed it, and we were stuck by the kitchen. The owner felt the need to tell us he didn't feel the need to keep $8000 in tea inventory, that the previous owners didn't have anything on computer, that he had just been to Iteland and what his plane ticket cost, how he had fired several young workers as they were always late, and being a retired principal he didn't stand for that...he continued to talk about politics and other topics and would not go away. He made me so nervous and I was angry at the intrusion. I could have gotten past that if the food had been of the caliber I had come to expect in the many years I have been a customer, but the cucumber sandwich had 2 thin slices that were almost invisible, other fillings were sparse, and the bread was so dry (old) I was thankful for the tea to help swallow it. My brother said the shepards pie was the worst he had ever had there. Thankfully, the desserts were still excellent. I'll try again in the fall, but if it goes downhill anymore, I will be surprised if it stays in business. I should have known it had changed when I walked in and the pickles and mustard and other products had been removed from the front shelves, leaving it far less homey and inviting. I was so disappointed.

Recently I had the pleasure of visiting the Sweet Afton Tea House with my mother and sisters for a “ladies day” out in honor of Mother’s Day. The experience could not have been more enjoyable. We were greeted very graciously by the proprietor, Al Wilkerson, upon arrival and promptly shown to our reserved table. The table was set with beautiful linens and china. We chose to start our meal with a cup of house made soup, with high tea to follow. The soups (mushroom or asparagus were available the day we visited) were very good and served piping hot. Our teas were well brewed and presented in eclectic mix of beautiful china teapots. We really enjoyed the fact that instead of being a set menu we were given a choice as to what sandwiches, scones and pastries we wanted for our “High Tea”, everything chose was delicious. Throughout the meal our waitress, as well as Al and his wife Phyllis, stopped by our table to ensure we had everything we needed. We all truly enjoyed our leisurely meal to this tea house and look forward to our next visit. The Wilkerson’s have a way of making you feel like treasured guests in their own home which is a rare quality to find in these modern times.

It was 'just fine.' It certainly wasn't bad but I wouldn't really recommend it. I thought the scones (a highlight of a proper cream tea) were like old Bisquick biscuits actually. They were very oddly slow for having only 6 people there and one lady was pushy/rushing us or something and yet they took like 35 minutes to bring us the next 'course.' Totally (dorky) outdated decor and though they were trying to be Victorian it just looked cheesy.

      Tearoom response:

      K,
I am sorry you did not have a great experience at the tearoom. It is important that you inform your server of anything not to your liking so it can be handled immediately. The presentation of your next course in our High Tea is determined by whether or not you have finished your previous course and not by time. Our scones are made from a traditional Scottish recipe and I assure you there is no Bisquick on the premises. Many of decorations in the tea room are from its 20 year legacy. The 1880 Welsh hutch was purchased by the original owner of the tearoom, and has been in a central point of the tea room since its first day of operation in 1988. The tea cup chandeliers are also 20 years old and we to receive many positive compliments on them. Many of the other decorations also have special stories behind them. The simple green teapot on one of the shelves always sat on my 90 year old grandmother's stove brewing tea. She was a great tea lover and the teapot is a symbol of many memories related to drinking tea. There are many similar stories associated with the decorations of which you are critical. Again if you had asked, rather than use the internet to criticize, you might have judged something not as out dated and 'dorky' (your word), but rather as sentimental with an enduring legacy. With businesses everywhere going under each day, Sweet Afton's Tea Room has endured for 20 years by continuing to build on the meaningful, friendly, and pleasant experiences that most customers have enjoyed in our tea room. The legacy continues............
Sincerely,
Al Wilkerson

My husband's Tavern Sandwich was a simple hearty sandwich on a delicious roll. He loves good bread and said the bread tasted great. The tomato bisque soup was excellent. Mariette,
Rudeness is never tolerated in our business and professional life as well as in our family life. I would like you to call me regarding the details and I will deal with this situation. As to the food portion sizes, this is what has been served at Sweet Afton Tea Room for 20 years with the exact same recipes. I am not sure what was expected but would like to talk to you about this. I need more information about the tea sharing. Did you order one pot of tea or two? If you ordered only one pot to share and then requested a refill, this would not be fair to our business. I have been going to the Sweet Afton Tea Room for over 12 years... I realize the newest owners just took over the establishment recently but I would hope they would want to know why they are losing a very loyal customer. I took one of my dearest friends to lunch there today (after bragging on how wonderful the place was). Our goal was to have a leisurely lunch and sip tea... I made reservations 3 days prior to arrival and after eating and having the plates removed. Our goal to sip on an additional pot of tea was lost when we were asked to leave after an hour at the establishment because they needed our table for a big party. Most establishments plan in advance and would seat an individual with reservations at a table that they would be asked to leave at immediately after finishing our lunch and dessert I can not tell you how embarrassed I was to be asked to leave a restaurant, that I had been speaking so highly of....It was as if someone slapped me in the face. Well we left and I will not be going back. I have no need to pay for the privilege of being embarrassed and insulted In this economy most business want to hang on to every single customer but this dioes not appear to be the case at this establishment.

      Tearoom response:

First and most importantly, we are very sorry for this unfortunate incident that resulted in causing an embarrassing situation for you with your friend. We also would like to thank you for your loyalty to the Sweet Afton Tea Room. As our business continues to grow, our Saturdays have become very busy, but we always allow at least 2 hours per reservation for our 12 tables. After talking to your server, she was quite surprised at your review. She said “ she has been your server on other occasions and since you both finished your meal and dessert and were sitting and talking, that everything was OK”. She was unaware that you wanted to “sip tea for awhile” and would have moved you to a nearby available table if you would have made your wishes known. You were originally to be seated at one of our two person tables, but our host offered you a larger four person table. That is where the problem began. Again we are very sorry.
Please give us another chance to offer you another positive experience at our restaurant.

Sincerely,

Phyllis and Al Wilkerson
Owners

Last Saturday, my friend Sue and I drove up to Sweet Afton's for proper tea, thinking we would have a quiet talk and tea experience; instead we were ushered into a totally new experience--this is a tearoom that welcomes families--a wonderful experience as so many tearooms frown on having small children attend! And another big surprise--MEN in tearooms was something we had never encountered in our 5 years of visiting a tearoom! The hosts, Al and Phyllis, made us welcomed and we felt like cherished family!! We will definately be back, as we had such a good time!! We each ordered a different tea, and Al even brought us another tea that he thought we should try! Lovely place with lovely staff.

      Tearoom response:

      Susan,
Thanks for your comments. Saturdays sometimes evolve into a family lunch outing at the tea room. It was definitely not a QUIET tea time from about 11:30 - 3:00 when you two were there. We sincerely Thank You for being understanding as another generation of young people are exposed to to drinking tea with their families. Please come back again during the week when it is a time for a ' quiet tea and talk ' experience. Welcome to the Sweet Afton Family!!

Al & Phyllis Wilkerson
Sweet Afton Tea Room

      Tearoom response:

      Tea Junky,
We are sorry you were not pleased with your tea. Each pot is brewed individually and if you were not happy, we will always brew another pot for you until we get it to your liking. My sister-in law and I recently celebrated her granddaughter's 4th birthday by having the little lady's first Tea Room experience here. The food was so delicious! The service was beyond perfection. We felt like we were given the Royal treatment! They even set up a high chair and tea cup for a very special teddy bear, a post humus gift from her great-grandma. We will never forget our lovely experience! Thank you!

My mom used to take me to Sweet Afton tea room after school during my high school years in Livonia. It would be a refreshing break between school and tennis practice, or just a time to spend some time together. I fell in love with Sweet Afton's wonderful tea sandwiches. Because of these special times spent at Sweet Afton's, my mom and sister recently planned my 22nd Birthday party with the ladies of the family at Sweet Afton tea room. I was able to gather with my 81-year-old grandmother, aunts, and younger cousins for a ladies' evening out together. I love the atmosphere at this tea room, allowing us to visit, relax, eat wonderful food, and drink fabulous tea. The owners couldn't have been more welcoming or accomodating in finding a time for us to make reservations. I highly recommend this tea room to everyone. You will not be disappointed. I feel very blessed that I was able to celebrate a special occasion with several generations together at Sweet Afton!

I've been going to Sweet Afton for the past 6 years even though I'm not from Plymouth. The waitstaff is the friendliest I've ever encountered and really care about your happiness. The tea and food is the closest to authentic British meals that I've found in the States, and I absolutely would be devestated if it were ever to close.

In July of this year, my neighbor and I had attended an afternoon memorial service in Plymouth and afterwards, she suggested that we go out to lunch. Since we live in Royal Oak, we weren't certain where to go, but I had remembered the Sweet Afton Tea Room where I used to take my mother when she lived in Westland. Hoping that it was still in existence, we were delighted by the lovely lunch and the graciousness of the current owner, Phyllis Wilkerson. It was my neighbor's first experience with a tearoom and she loved it! Now days, tearooms are a labor of love, and I encourage all who love 'all things tea' to support the Sweet Afton Tea Room.

Visiting the Sweet Afton Tea Room blew me away and I’m not a Tea House guy by any means. I’ve never been to a Tea House before but this is a place I will continue to patronize. The scones and chait were exceptional. The menu is very reasonable with unbelievable service. If you’ve never experienced a Tea House I recommend Sweet Afton Tea Room as your first. The Owners are very classy down to earth people who don’t mind coming out speaking with patrons as if they knew them for several years. I could go on forever about Sweet Afton and its owners. Again I was blown away by the experience. I will definitely recommend your great establishment to all my friends and family.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Sweet Afton Tea Room! The varieties of teas available along with the choices of menu items made me feel like I was back in England (I lived in England for 8 years). I especially enjoyed the Wellington with its light, puffy, and flaky topping for my meal. I also enjoyed my light and creamy desert with the raspberry coulis. I’ll definitely come back when I’m in the area…P.S. Yes, many of the previous comments are “spot on” about Al being entertaining as well as congenial and Phyllis is quite charming and engaging as well…

A visit to Sweet Afton's has always been a special treat. The new owners, Phyllis and Al Wilkerson, have continued the calming atmosphere while adding their own unique decorating style and special treats on their menu. On Mother's Day this year, they hosted a special Mother's Day brunch which was outstanding. There was a family which looked to be three generations. The mother and grandmother were certainly enjoying sharing the experience with the child (probably 8 or 9) and the child seemed to feel very grown up in her party dress.Great choice! We have been going to Sweet Afton Tea Room every month or so, for years. The service has always been fast and friendly whenever we arrive, early or late in the day. The service has been great when they are busy and during slow times. I am surprised to read negative comments about the service. I have never heard other customers complain of a problem with either the service or the food. While the menu selection is not huge, there is a good range of sandwiches, specials and traditional English favorites. One of our favorites items are the scones. We are not the best judges of the variety of teas because we always order the same tea. Compared to other tea rooms we have visited, I would say that the selection appears good to very good. The room decor is exactly what I would imagine as a tea room. Many nice British touches and even the chandeliers are made of tea cups.

I was very disappointed. This tea room is conveniently located and i had hoped to have my bridal shower here. I called ahead, and the girl on the phone said they closed at 5 and stopped serving at 4. We drove like crazy and got there 2 minutes to 4(on a cell phone clock ACCURATE). The owner took her time to stroll over to us and say 'i'm sorry we can't serve you, we are closed.' i said please, i am planning my shower, and this is the only time we can both come together. She then said 'this is a hard business, and we want to be WALKING OUT THE DOOR at 5'. ican't believe i stayed long enough to give her my money and business. The waitress almost told us 'NO' we can't share our afternoon tea. no cozies, sam's club quiches. Oh yeah, and we were out by 4:45! Anyone ever watch Pretty Woman? Remember when she goes to the ritzy store and they wouldn't help her? then she goes back in with all her shopping bags, and says 'remember when you wouldn't help me? BIG mistake'and walks out. That is what i want to do with my shower receipt from wherever i decide to have it!

This is the second time I have tried this tea shop and nothing much has improved. The tea was good, but quickly got cold without a tea cozy. The Earl of Sandwich tasted ok, but there wasn't enough of it and when I requested some more bread, the server brought two tiny pieces and charged another .50 on the bill! The scones weren't very sweet, had been nuked and turned out rubbery. The service was ok, but could do with improvement too. I doubt I'll return. It's a shame, because this place has great potential with the right ownership.

Beautiful place. Nice quiet atmosphere. Very clean kitchen (we sat at the back and could look into it) Nice service. Would rather see tea made at the table than just having a pot brought out, however, the tea was excellent. Scones were more like American biscuits but had a good flavor. Devonshire cream was whipped and tasted more like whipped cream. Overall this was a good experience and we'd go again.

This is now the third time I've given this tearoom a try, and sadly, I am disappointed yet again. The food was less than good and the service was even worse. I really wish the owners here would visit other tearooms to get a sense of what people are expecting. It should be a pleasurable experience. I had ordered high tea which came with frozen appetizer quiches that you buy at Costco. The desserts were in pre-formed, frozen tart shells. Not much effort went into getting this food prepared, only an oven and a tablespoon were needed to slap some (probably) pre-made pudding into the pre-made cups. I'm done trying here. I will be driving further for a better experience. Maybe a change in ownership would be in order here.

What a horrid place! Bad service, bad food, bad atmosphere. Taking tea should be a relaxing, enjoyable event. Being served by a surly waitress doesn't fit the bill. The 'quiche' was a rubbery, watery concoction--more like an overcooked omelet. This is the ONLY time I have had bad quiche. Ever! My friend had the afternoon tea and it was excruciatingly slow between courses. And mustard on a cucumber sandwich? How strange! Apparently, it's a problem for the staff to prepare separate bills for customers. This is a dilemma when both of you have twenty dollar bills. This is such a lovely little town, and to be cursed by such an unpleasant tea room is most unfortunate. Luckily for the good people of Plymouth, there are MANY other outstanding tea rooms in nearby cities.

I visit the Sweet Afton whenever my daughter is in town from California. It is always a lovely experience, a great Mom-daughter outing. We love the decor, the tea, the traditions observed. Staff are always friendly and service is wonderful.

I was part of a small group celebrating a baby shower. Our server was extremely slow, we had trouble getting basic service out of her, THEN were reminded by management that our reservation was nearly up! Our food was still being served and we were anxiously trying to find our waitress to get our bill. Extremely rude. Additionally, when I called for reservations, the staff was rude.
