My friend decided to take me here for my birthday. Never again! She was so upset, we arrived a few minutes early and were told go walk around I'm not ready for you. ALL the tables were set and NO ONE ELSE was there at the time. Would it have been to much to let us sit at the table and talk till she was ready? I think NOT! Then during the tea there was LOUD country music in the background, not the atmosphere I want for tea! The food was just regular stuff I could get at a diner. No thanks! The picture of the front isn't even where she is!

      Tearoom response:

      Dear Ms. Sterner,
I am very concerned that your review has incorrectly identified our tearoom as the one you visited. First of all, I was not open in March of 09 as the place where I do tea was closed for the season on that time frame. Secondly, we have NEVER played country music for any patrons, since the day I opened in 1997...Additionally, we do advise our patrons if we are not quite ready for them when they are indeed early or conflicting with another reservation but we invite them to browse our store while they are waiting. In all of our years we have never had someone complain about such a small thing. Finally, we pride ourselves on our menu prep. and planning and it certainly isn't 'diner food.' We have to wonder if you have reviewed the right tearoom. If indeed you think you have, then I have to respectfully disagree with ALL of your statements as none of these apply to us. You may in the future want to speak to the owner or manager if indeed your service was that unacceptable and give them the opportunity to correct something. Frankly, when we read your review we were baffled..to say the least...

You will not be disappointed in this tea room. We loved everything about it. Helen is very knowledgeable on teas and we felt very comfortable there. The food was delicious!

      Tearoom response:

Thank you Erin. We hope you will return...

I have visited the Black Rose many times and really don't understand why there are bad reviews of this tea room. After reading the reviews I see that it is a COMMUNICATION problem; not a problem with the tea room service, quality, variety of teas or cost. When I called to make a reservation, I was told about the policies and menu selections. As a small business owner myself, and in these economic times, you have to be good stewards with your business, as well as, your home budget monies. I LOVED this tea room, the experience was wonderful and I will be back. Everything was delicious and Helen is VERY EXPERIENCED in her knowledge of tea and tea menu selections. Please try this tea room. You WILL NOT be disappointed.

I visit The Black Rose a few times a year and each time I visit, I am always impressed with the variety of teas, quality and consistency of the food items and the impeccable service that Helen and Linda give each customer. Not only that but they know alot about the art and education of tea, not just about their own tea room. I love to go to The Black Rose, have tea upstairs and shop in the market and gift shop. It is a wonderful experience and I only wish there was something like this where I live...Also, I love the accents on the botannical and not the overdone victorian look that so many tearooms tend to over do...Love it!!

Sorry to say I had to give a 'poor' score in every category because I never had the chance to go. My mother received a gift certificate to this tea room from my father. We made reservations to take my 4 year old daughter several weeks in advance. Today we were left a message at 5:17 pm (the day before our reservations)that she had to cancel our reservation. We were the only 3 people scheduled for that day and 'it wouldn't be 'profitable' enough for her to be open'. To say the least we are extremely disappointed in their business ethics. Why should she serve us, she already has the money in hand since it's a gift certificate.

      Tearoom response:

      Dear Tracey,

Although we regret having to reschedule your tea, we do have to adhere to our policies as far as profitability go, At the Black Rose, if we do not book 5 or more people for any given day, we tell you in advance that the possibility exists that we would have to reschedule your tea. (Your mother had a gift certificate and did not use a ccd no. )When your mother was called, she did not answer the phone and we left a message for her to return our call. We did not hear from her and had to call again, When we did that, she was so upset , we were not given the opportunity to offer her anything for the inconvenience. Had she let us talk for longer than a second or two, she would have been offered a second gift certificate, doubling her first one. We regret that she was talking over us to the point she didn't give us any opportunity to talk and then she hung up. Please advise her that we will be happy to either double her gift certificate for another visit OR refund her first one. She will need to call the tearoom no. to do this. Provided of course she ceases with her threat for you to write to the local paper and give us bad publicity. This was a business decision that each and every customer is told when they make reservations...It is regrettable that we were not given any opportunity to speak or give her satisfaction. Again, she would need to call us.

Today I visited The Black Rose Tea Room with two friends. This was my second visit to a tea room, and I must say I wasn't impressed. When the one friend called to make reservations, she was not told that if anyone could not make it, she would not get her money back. She was offered a gift certificate, or she could take the food home, or we could eat it there. We felt she should have been told this when the reservations were made, because as it turned out, one person could not make it. The scones were good, but a little doughy inside. Also, I felt there were too many sweets and not enough sandwich choices. The cold soup was also a little disappointing. There was no menu telling you what would be served. I myself do not care for lavender, and just about everything served was flavored with lavender. I'm glad I don't have a food allergy to it! I had a great time being with my friends, but we won't be visiting the Black Rose again.Oh, the tea was very good.

      Tearoom response:

      Dear Elaine,

As a business owner, I am disturbed that you were upset with your visit. Since it was your friend however who scheduled the tea and was DEFINITELY given our reservation policies, I can only assume that there was a miscommunication between the two of you. These policies are gone over very thoroughly with each person booking and as a business must be adhered to.I'm certain you can understand this. Your friend certainly knew our policies when she paid for the tea in advance and was given many options to choose from when your friend did not show up. She opted to keep the food and share it-at that point it was no different than your friend being in attendance as far as amount goes. Your friend also knew it was 'lavender' month at the Buttercup. If she did not want a lavender themed menu then she could have booked another day, which she did not. Like many tearooms, we do a seasonal menu and do not publish this but will explain when asked. As far as menu amounts, although this is a subjective opinion, after being in business for over 11 years, we feel we balance our menu in keeping with what the teatime tradition really is. Everyone does it differently and no two teas are exactly the same. We regret you were not happy (although nothing was said to me at the time of your visit, and I was not given the opportunity to make you a satisfied customer..) we hope you will return at another season when perhaps the menu will be more appealing to you. We certainly care about your tea experience as we do all of our patrons...

Helen does an amazing job. She is friendly, personable, and ready to offer a suggestion when needed. I took five friends to the Black Rose for their very first tea experience. It was a lovely, relaxing afternoon with beautiful atmosphere and delicious food. My friends had a wonderful time and now understand why I enjoy going to tea so much. :)

A very pleasant experience. Relaxing atmosphere, nice little get-away from the outside world hustle and bustle. Would definitely recommend to family and friends. My daughter and I enjoyed it very much.

The original Black Rose Tea Room is back! Everything was delightful, esp. the homemade scones. Loved browing through Buttercup's shop.

I visited The Black Rose tea room and found it to be as it always has been--consistent in quality and service. The tearoom did move from 315 Broadway to The Buttercup Market in Abbottstown Pa (only 7 miles from it's previous location.) It is a great location with plenty of parking and a really nice gift shop with a full bakery and gourmet food shop. Definitely worth visiting. I'll be back!!!

I don't think this tea room is in business any longer. I visited the York Street location and found a candy store in its place. When I inquired inside they directed me around the corner to a B & B. There were no signs for the tea room or any indication of them being there.

I was quite surprised to find a 'For Rent' sign in the window of the Black Rose Tea Room just before Christmas. I called the phone number to see if it had closed permanently or perhaps just moved, and was happy to hear Helen's voice on the other end of the line! The tea room has simply moved around the block and is now part of the Beechmont Inn Bed & Breakfast on Broadway in Hanover. The Black Rose phone number is still good, so be sure to stop in and congratulate Helen on this next step in the life of the Black Rose.

We have visited the Black Rose Tearoom on a number of occasions. There has never been a disappointment. Everything is first class. The owner is friendly, knowledgeable, and professional as is the rest of the staff. Please take the negative reviews with a grain of salt! We are returning to this tearoom on a regular basis.

This is going to be my fifth year going back to the Black Rose with my daughter for Mothers day. We enjoy ourselves very much everytime we go. The food is very good as well as all the tea we tasted. We even had my neices Bridal shower at the Black Rose that is how much we like this tea house. I recommend this house to all my fiends and family. We will definitely be going back. Victoria Erbe 5-3-05
