After a couple of calls and no answer, I made another call one day to make a reservation and left a voicemail. After a couple of days and no reply, I called again. This time, a lady answered, and the reservation was made. When my guest and I arrived, the door was still locked and the closed sign was still in the window. After knocking a few times and no answer, my guest walked around back to see if there was an automobile parked to indicate someone was there. Meanwhile, I telephoned the tea house. A lady answered and unlocked the door when I told her we had a reservation and were locked outside. We were told to pick a table as the lady went to get our menus. She was polite, but more cordial than friendly. While we waited for our order, we notice a few more patrons come in. Each time, they were left waiting with no one to greet them. A few times, my guest had to let the staff know there was a customer waiting. We noted that one patron and her guest also had a reservation, yet were not greeted. When our food came, my guest's quiche had been heated in a microwave, and it was over-cooked. We both are excellent cooks, so this was apparent. The quiche portion was small, and the bread described on the menu was only one bite-size piece. My lunch order was tasty, but we both left still hungry. We made the drive over to the Cold Stone Creamy and had a huge serving of ice cream afterwards. The tea house is beautifully decorated. There is an excellent concept in the works, but much improvement in customer service is needed. When we visited the restroom, there were no paper towels in the dispenser. It was barely past noon and there had not been more than three tables seated during our visit. While eating, I couldn't help but note that something as simple as a bell on the entrance door or a chime that would ring in the back kitchen would help improve guest service immensely. It leaves a bad first impression for a guest to not be received, especially when they are supposed to have a reservation. We did enjoy the ambiance of the tea house, but it lacks other elements to encourage us to visit again.

I have been in many a tea room in the US as well as my travels abroad. I also have been certified as a Master Blender by the American Tea Masters Assoc. Since moving to NC it's been hard to find real tea houses in the area so I was excited to try The Pegg House. I made reservations so when my mother-in-law and I arrived it was frustrating that we had to walk through the different rooms looking for someone that worked there as we were not greeted at the door. We were then stuck back in a corner of a room where a baby shower was going on so it was not very quiet. The waitress came to take our orders and ask what kind of tea we'd like. There was a nice variety of food that you could order though I was a little disappointed at the size of the tea menu. We were told we could only order one kind of tea with our meal. I greatly enjoy the tea rooms where you can try as many different kinds of tea with your meal, especially when you order a full tea. Our tea came out maybe 15 minutes later but it was not till 30 minutes after we were seated that our food was delivered. I understand that they had a baby shower going on but we did make reservations. The waitress gave an attitude when I asked her to tell us what the food was we had been served on the lovely tray. She never came back to see how the food was and we had to hail her to get a refill on our tea pots. For the price I was very disappointed in the amount of food that we received, I actually left still feeling hungry. The food was good but I have never left a tea house not filling stuffed to the gills. Overall the service, food and tea will not entice me to return to this particular tea house.

The owner of this place needs to give up this business! She is never there and if it weren't for her two dedicated employees this place wouldn't even be open! Heck sell it to one of your employees if you don't want it anymore!

My wife and a family friend are visiting the area for a few days this week. They both love high tea and so made a reservation over 1 week in advance. They arrive a few minutes ahead of their 1PM reservation, step inside and no one is to be found. Someone comes from the back to let them know 'they are full'. My wife says that she has a reservation. The rude lady responds, 'did you leave a number when you made the reservation so we could call you to cancel? We had a last minute booking of the whole place.' My wife was speechless. She couldn't even think to ask for a manager. The lady didn't apologize. She made it sound as if my wife was at fault for not leaving a number when she made the reservation. She didn't offer to provide a discount if my wife would come back another day...NOTHING. They never asked my wife for a number when the reservation was made. Even if my wife HAD left a number, what then? They planned to call and just ditch because something better came along with no offer of a discount on the next visit. This is the poorest of poor service. I am guessing they figured a full house was worth ditching a two-top. The fact that they wanted to take the full booking isn't the problem. It is the fact that they acted like it was my wife's fault, didn't apologize and didn't try to make things right at all. Well, I am planning to put this review up on every site I can find to make the word of mouth far outstrip the single full house booking.

I had lunch with my grandchildren at The Pegg House Tea Room over the summer. It was so beautifully decorated and the food was delicious. I had tomato pie, strawberry cake, & chicken salad. It was excellent! I will definitely be back to visit the tea room again!

This can be a nice afternoon tea experience under the right circumstances. I was there using a Living Social offer that was close to expiring and so they were rather full. We had a reservation and were seated immediately but it took 50 minutes before we were served. Most other people there seemed to be waiting quite a while also. However the people at the table next to us came in about 25-30 minutes after us but were served before us. At that time I asked about my food and was told it was coming. We were finally served and the food was great but what blew me away is that there was never an apology for the delay. It is much easier to forgive when someone asks for forgiveness. Apart from the tea I requested not being available, everything about the tea and food were excellent. I love afternoon tea and wherever I travel I make an attempt to visit an afternoon tearoom. This one is comparable to many of the nicer ones I have visited and is a good value for the price.

The Pegg House Tea Room is so charming. The servers and owner are friendly and attentive. Most importantly, the food is incredible. My favorites are the scones w/ devonshire cream and strawberry cake. Ironically, I have never been a fan of either, until I had them at the PHTR. Their scones and strawberry cake are now on my list of best things I've ever eaten.

I went with 4 of my girlfriends on a Saturday. We made reservations a head of time, which is the way to go. Even though it was busy our table was waiting for us when we arrived. We started off with the high tea and enjoyed the various goodies it had to offer. I loved the Mango Tea and the Cranberry Turkey sandwich was delicious.

I was with a large Mom's group today and I must say, I've never enjoyed myself more! It was a great time of fun and fellowship and the food offerings were so yummy! The coffee was wonderful, but I would love to see some flavored creamers come on the scene, which I think would add to customer satisfaction. Other than that, the food was great, service was great and I hope to enjoy many lunches with my daughter here when she's old enough.

My experiences at the Pegg House Tea Room have been delightful. I have made three trips from Greensboro to enjoy very delicious meals and plan to return as soon as possible --- food and fellowship -- that's a great time and yesterday my friends and I met the new manager. She seemed very excited about the renovations underway and I can't wait to return to see what is new and even more exciting.

This was my first time at Pegg House, after years of patronage at Ruby Rose in Stoneville, which has now been purchased as a private residence. I was NOT disappointed at Pegg House! The food was outstanding, expertly prepared and beautifully presented, and the peach iced tea was the perfect complement to the Moravian-style chicken pie I had. My two friends raved about their main courses and had peanut butter pie for dessert (I tasted -- wanted a piece of my own but am being disciplined about sugar for a while) and it was among the best I've had. The house is tastefully decorated with just enough charm to welcome but not overwhelm; the food and tea are the 'stars' at Pegg House. I'll be a frequent visitor!

When Ruth Shaw sold the tea room and I was told that things wouldn't change, I was leery and after todays visit I had reason to be. The place has no character anymore, no lamps, flowers or other personal touches that I adored. I ordered my favorite Pegg house tea and I have never been more disappointed. The sandwiches looked like something a child prepared and the sweets were store bought. I always enjoyed the presentation that graced the tea tray when Ruth served it. There doesn't seem to be any pride at all at this business anymore which is a real shame as it was my favorite place to go for the past three years. I hope the new owner will heed the saying if it ain't broke don't mess with it!

      Tearoom response:

I appreciate your honesty and criticism, although the statement about our sweets being store bought is totally false. I have a very hard working lady in my kitchen, who has been here for 11 years, baking everything that is on our 'high tea' from scratch. I think it is very hurtful to her when she works so very hard. The flowers are out and the lamps have been replaced as the other lamps were a fire hazard. Please feel free to come in and have a Pegg House Tea on me.

What happened to this tea room? There is no personality anymore. No flowers, decor is drab and the food is mediocre. The previous owner was creative, paid astute attention to detail and friendly. It's a shame the new owner doesn't realize how impersonal she has made the tea room. Big mistake!!! Probably won't be back and I was a good customer!!! What a shame!

The Pegg House Tea Room has been a favorite place for me to treat galpals to a special birthday lunch since it is so unique and charming. This week the Greensboro Newcomer Club had High Tea catered by Pegg House and it was exceptional! Everything was presented on beautiful old china plates and teacups. They did a great job!

The worst service I have experienced in North Carolina. Not sure what the attraction to this place is. We had lunch at Pegg House Tearoom after visiting Korner's Folly. It is located in a historic house and is divided into several small rooms for an intimate, relaxing experience. It is quite small though, so reservations are a MUST for Saturdays and probably any day for more than 4 people. The house was tastefully decorated for the holidays (our visit was in mid- Dec). The food and its presentation were fabulous! We had lunch and dessert but did see a traditional tea being served. I rated artistry of tea as just 'good' since only tea bags (Republic Tea) were available. I did like the fact that the pot of tea was served with a stand over a tea candle to keep it warm. The staff were friendly and helpful but a little overwhelmed - the service could have been prompter, especially our initial beverage order.

The tea room was 'dressed' for fall this past Saturday and was very appealing. I especially liked the leaves under the glass table tops. The food items were deliciously prepared and delightfully displayed. We enjoyed the variety of sandwiches and excellent British-style scones. Only two items of constructive criticism: while the tea cups were whimsical the teapots were rather plain, and the tea was prepared from commercially available bags not looseleaf.

Jessica was an excellent server and the food was divine! Everyone had a wonderful time. I would suggest The Pegg House Tea Room and Ms.Ruth to anyone! Thanks for a perfect event!

I had lunch at the Pegg House last Saturday. I was very disappointed with the service and the food. I waited 45 minutes for my lunch to be served. When it came, the cream of broccoli soup was cool and looked as if it was canned cream of mushroom soup with wilted broccoli stirred in. However, the roast beef wrap was delicious! The server apologized for the lateness of my food and said it was due to the fact thay had several large parties to serve. The moral of this story: do not eat there on Saturday when they have large parties to serve. I have eaten at the Pegg House before and the food and service were great!

I love this tearoom! It's amazing how good a tiny little sandwich can taste...she used the softest bread I've ever had. The chicken salad was delicious. I've eaten scones from many different places. These were the very, very best--light, melt-in-your-mouth, with beautifully browned tops and sugar (and devonshire cream!). So good. The tearoom is an historic home in our town. A very charming place to linger.

I went Christmas, December 28,2010. I am English and this was my first visit. Quaint tea rooms, I missed the welcome you would get in England, it is self seating. The food is good with pleasant wait staff. I will go back but with different expectations. This is not an authentic English tea room, the quiche tasted really good but not how you would get it in England. The scone was nice but not a true English scone. As I said I will go back as I did like it.

Really enjoyed our first book club meeting at Pegg House Tea Room. Ms. Ruth was extremely welcoming, flexible and willing to open after hours for a group of young moms who really needed a break. Ms. Ruth served us herself and the food was absolutely incredible. The tomato bisque and turkey croissant will make a return trip in the very near future completely necessary.

Before my trip to Topsail NC, I searched TeaMap for a tearoom that would possibly be on my way. I called prior to getting to the exit to make sure they were actually serving afternoon tea, and spoke with Ruth the owner. She answered all my questions and filled me with anticipation for my favorite ritual. I was so pleased to see afternoon tea being offered along with a full menu. The atmosphere was peaceful and soothing and though I was dining alone, the conversations in the room were both interesting and informative. Most of the patrons spoke highly of Ruth and raved to their companions about how delicious the tearoom's food was. Ruth asked if I was the one she had spoken with on the phone, and made me feel quite welcome. She was truly a jewel. Ruth's egg salad was delicious as well as the other finger sandwiches that were served, and I simply loved the Cinnamon Plum hot tea. The scones, I can honestly say were some of the best I have ever enjoyed - they were absolutely wonderful. When I told Ruth that having afternoon tea in her establishment was my birthday gift to myself, she surprised me with a slice of strawberry cake that she had placed a lit candle in the middle of it. She will never know how precious the time at her tearoom was to me, nor how much I appreciated her generous hospitality. She has a gift for making one feel special. On the trip back, my sister was with me, and we stopped again so she and some friends could enjoy the experience as well, and they did! I hope if you're in the area, that you too will stop and let Ruth and her staff bring you a great afternoon tea experience! I don't believe you'll be disappointed!

A friend and I had afternoon tea at Pegg House yesterday. What a jewel to find in the town of Kernersville. Ruth, the proprietor, came out to talk to us and made us feel as though we were visiting her in her home. The service was excellent and the tea fare was superb!! Wonderful chicken salad in crispy little tartlet shells, tea sandwiches and other savories topped with a wonderful sweet selection. The scones are the piece de resistance. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the town for those who don't know Kernersville. After we were well sated, Ruth brought out a sample of her signature strawberry cake which sent us over the proverbial edge. Very light and delicious. Try it once and, like us, you will be glad you've discovered a place to take respite from the world's fray on any afternoon.

I also love the quaint tea cups/saucers which are used to serve a delightful variety of teas! The food is awesome ... I especially love the chicken pie and the homemade desserts! Overall ... We visited the tea room for lunch. We enjoyed the decorations and setting. We chose the high tea selection for lunch. We enjoyed the variety. Everything was very high quality, well seasoned and at the height of freshness. It was a very busy day, given it was just before Mother's day and the Spring Folly. We expect they had underestimated the amount of servers needed because we waited quite some time for our orders. We were also disappointed with the serving sizes for the price of the high tea. We did notice that patrons who ordered lunch sandwiches appeared to be nicely sized.

I found out they were closed on Sunday, but when I told Ruth what I was calling about, she agreed to have a private party just for my Mom! How awesome is that??? The portion of the Pegg House Tea was just right. The finger sandwiches were wonderful - especially the cucumber. The chicken salad is greally good. As a child my mother worked at a tea room, I loved having tea with her on her breaks. When I agreed to attend a bridal tea on Sunday 10/4/09, I couldn't imagine it would be better than what I knew as a child. Ms. Ruth made it everything I remembered. The house was charming, and it held the perfect ambiance. The variety of tea was impressive. I secured my favorite-blackberry sage. Ms. Ruth's service was superb. She gave all the little extra's... love and hearts confetti on the table; candles lit in rooms we weren't in; and when we asked for a box to take home to the groom, she packed a few extra treats. I couldn't have been happier and will return for every occasion I can think of!

Service poor, attitudes even poorer. Are they always grouchy and uppity or was that just a bad day? In this economy, you'd think they'd be happy to have customers, but I guess they don't need the business. Must be nice. Food was good, but overpriced and with the attitudes, we will not be going back.

Wondered if it was just a fluke when we went here. I see that we weren't the only ones who experienced poor service. We made reservations, but weren't told you had to reserve the 'Pegg House Tea' So, we couldn't get what we came for. I drove 1 1/2 to get there. This was a special ladies birthday lunch for a friend. I will say the chicken pot pie, was very good. It is not traditional, with only a small amount of pastry. Portion was small, but very good. Peach iced tea great. Scone was a little hard and below average for $3.00, but cream very good. Should give 2 scones for maybe $3.50. Maybe they are really overworked, but seemed to not need our business. Didn't seem to mind that no one told us you had to reserve the tea. Very Strange attitude. I'd probably still go back, because there aren't any other tea rooms near by. I'll just know what to expect.

We had to wait a while to be waited on. The restaurant was 'out of' four items on the menu, and since the menu did not offer many choices to start with, this was a disappointing. The waitress brought an incorrect drink order, the food came out incorrect and needless to say, we were rather unimpressed. The food and service was not worth the $25 charge we paid.

Visited first time back in April on a Satureday at lunchtime with my sister and my almost 6 month old infant. The atmosphere is wholesome, clean, home-y with a feminine touch (lace curtains and such), and Southern. The food can be described that way also. Enjoyed an iced peach tea, a fresh salad and some fabulous peach pie. I found the service attentive without being stifling so as to allow plenty of conversation between my sister and myself. Also, they were child-friendly which is a plus for me. While the Pegg House isn't 'the fanciest', it is elegant enough for a special treat. I will return for more!

In Dec. 06, I left a message on Tuesday, Dec. 19th for a reservation on Friday, Dec. 22nd. On Thursday, Dec. 21st, AFTER closing, I received a call back telling me they were now closed until after the first of the year. Obviously, my message was received or she wouldn't have called me at all. And just as obviously, she did not want or need my business. How nice that in this economy her business is so good that she no longer cares if someone comes in or not! I still have not been back and I used to go once a month. Besides, I can duplicate her food quite nicely, save myself money and the trip there, and I don't have do deal with her attitude. And I've told everyone I know. Hope it was worth it.

I just gota say: I LOVED THIS PLACE!! The service was great, the ambiance was very relaxing with quiet standards playing in the background. And the food, the food was just awesome. We were so overwhelmed w/ all of the items on the menu, we just ordered a bunch of stuff: We ordered the Pegg House Tea ( a 2 tiered lazy susan with several sandwiches and a variety of scrumptious cakes littered about on its plates). After that, I had a fantastic smoked turkey breast sandwich w/ an amazing raspberry infused cream cheese spread on a flaky croissant and a small salad. It was outstanding. My wife had a crab cake surrounded by caramelized onions on a bed of salad greens w/ a low cal balsamic dressing. I can't tell you how it tasted as she wouldn't let me near it, not even for a small taste! The service, as I said earlier, was wonderful and I agree w/ the other reviewer: ask for Jessica. She's a delight! Who would've thought: this level of dining in tiny Kernersville! Again, OUTSTANDING! We will be back! 10/19/2006
