Overall, this is one of the better options in Washington. The food is fairly average, though there are a few stand out items. The building is quaint but dignified. We had good service, but did find the restroom situation a bit inconvenient - only one for ladies in a packed house.

My wife and I have dined at The Secret Garden numerous times and it is a treat indeed every time. The scones are fantastic, tea selection superb. The chicken croissant sandwich dazzles the taste buds. We have had the tea sets as well, with quality and quantity excelling any tea shops we've tried in the Seattle area. We continue to return and look forward to bringing our granddaughter to her first tea tomorrow!

I've visited this teahouse several times and had pleasant experiences. It's why I chose to host a bridal shower and invite family and friends, none of whom had been there before. We had reservations for 4PM (they do three seatings for groups). With two of our guests missing at 4:15, we were told that the kitchen CLOSED at 4 and should get our orders in. The service felt hurried and brusque. We tried to be cheerful and friendly, but felt rushed and unwelcome. They have 'unlimited' tea refills, but it wasn't offered. We left with boxes of food, feeling like we needed to get out so they could close. An automatic 18% gratuity was added, though we had a party of 6 and they state they add it for groups OVER 6 persons. I'm disappointed, as I've had good experiences here. It's a lovely place with good food and a great selection of tea. They usually allow you to take time and encourage you to relax. Unfortunately, when service really mattered for our special occasion, it was lacking. If 4PM is when their kitchen and restaurant close, they should reconsider their reservation policy. *There is no email address on their website for comments, so I posted this review.

      Tearoom response:

Jennifer, i'm so sorry that you didn't enjoy your experience here this last Saturday. The automatic gratuity was included on your bill because your reservation was for 8 persons and we added leaves to the table and had food prepared for 8. At the time I requested that you place your order (4:20) you still expected at least one more person to join your party, and ordered a meal for them. It's unfortunate that two of your guests weren't able to come, but we had already done the extra work to accommodate them. We knew you were having some type of tea set, so had prepared some of the foods as well.
We allow 2 hours for guests to use their table and our concern is that if your order doesn't come in to us in a timely manner, you won't have enough time to enjoy each course of your meal. We start the process of closing the kitchen at 4:00; once the order is in, we can begin putting away items that aren't needed.
Our server did take several tea refills to your table; perhaps only a few folks heard her ask if you needed anything when she checked on you.
I'm sorry you felt rushed. We fully expected you to be here until 6:00 or shortly after. The time stamp on the cash resgister shows you checked out at 5:48.
Once again, we're all sorry that you were disappointed in the experience.

What a wonderful way to spend one's '60th' birthday with good friends. The surroundings are relaxing, the sandwiches, savories ,soup, desserts, and all the food is completely fresh and such an artistic way it is presented. The servers are kept quite busy but, always make you feel special. I have been to many tearooms but in my opinion this one is the best.

I absolutely love this place! So glad they are in a much better venue than Factoria Mall. The house is charming! They have a wonderful giftshop, and it seems every time I go in, the products are new and seem to improve over time. Scones are fabulous! The frozen cranberry salad is to die for!!! I've never had a bad experience here! Can't wait for Christmas decorations!

We have always had great service here. I do know that since they are a small shop that they can only seat as many people as they have servers on hand to serve (below review) Mark makes the most amazing homemade soups and the scones are fabulous. My husband and teenage son even love coming here, and my daughters buy tea to take home with them. It's so nice to have this gem so close by.

Have been to this tea room probably 20 times in the last year. While the food is quite good (scones are some of the best I've ever had in a tea room) their service both in person and over the phone are constantly problematic. It has now reached the point where I am canceling a reservation for this weekend and looking elsewhere. General problems are slow service, staff not bringing items requested, general rudeness on the phone or in person regarding reservations (everything from making reservations to arriving on a slow day without reservations, and being told, while standing in a room with only two tables full at the end of the day) that they just aren't sure they can serve us, etc. This establishment has been in business long enough to have ironed out these challenges. I worked in the food service industry for many years. Quite honestly, there is no excuse for these sorts of continued challenges other than poor management and poor training.

Each time I visit, it keeps getting better and better!!! Their quiche is always excellent! I most recently got to try their 'Harvest Luncheon' and had a quiche filled with ham, pears (who knew!), and cheese! It was so delicious! Their tiny dessert sample that came with it, was so adorable! I know it is handmade but it looks too picture perfect! Our server was wonderful! She somehow managed to serve the entire dining room by herself and we still had great attention! New finds in the gift shop! What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon! We will be back soon!

What a delightful experience. The grounds, atmosphere, tables & settings, waitress, service, food EVERYTHING pampered you. Our Girls Lunch Out group of 7+ will be enjoying time together sipping tea and enjoying the Secret Garden Sampler Cup of soup and half sandwich of your choice, served with both Orzo Pea Salad and Frosty Cranberry Salad $11.95 in November. It is absolutely yummy!

In the past month, I have been to The Secret Garden Tea Room twice and I live in Seattle. I drink tea daily and I love going to afternoon tea on a semi-regular basis. This is by far the best tea room in the Seattle area! I even like it better than the Empress in Victoria. The large dining room is very spacious and I loved how much room we had between our table and the next. You can actually hear what your tea companion is saying. The tea choices are really good and the food...well...that was by far the best part! The incredible hot scones and delicious savories are served fresh from the oven. We had the Larkspur Tea Set and it was PLENTY of food for us. You can even have more than one (large) scone. The service was without a doubt the best that I've experienced in this type of venue. The owner was very friendly and helpful. I intend on coming back every time I want a great afternoon tea!

My friend told me how much her & her husband loved this place and was so excited about it she took me the following week. The Secret Garden is by far one of the best places I have ever been for high tea!! The beautiful 100 year old home adds to the ambiance - the setting is simply lovely! They have a wonderful selection of tea (I highly recommend the black tea/vanilla bean) and the food was delicious. The fresh baked scones are out of this world!! Both my friend and I found the service to be wonderful as well! The woman who waited on us was very friendly, sweet & attentive. The owner was also very friendly & quite lovely. I will definitely be back!!

This is by far the loveliest tea room in the area. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. And they have a wonderful gift shop. My friends and I have been here many times. BUT EVERY TIME THE SERVICE HAS BEEN POOR. I mean, really bad. Sometimes rude. We (over 12 of us) have decided to never return. It has been so bad at times that it is embarrasing, especially if we have someone new with us. There is one waitress that is always unpleasant as well as a clerk in the giftshop. And while normally nice the owner/cook has lately been very rude herself. It is a real shame.

I was slightly impressed the first time we went to the Secret Garden. Maybe because it was my first time. The second time not so much. I found the owner of the establishment colder than ice, and totally unlikeable. The staff was okay. Food was good. Prices in the shop were way beyond reasonable for even such things as tea balls. It is an experience, but nothing I would repeat. Again, the owner who seems to have her fingers in everything, is very very unlikeable, demanding and bossy. Would not choose to eat there again.

I have visited The Secret Garden Tea Room several times over the past couple of years and each visit has been wonderful! I held a small baby shower there, have had one on one visits with friends, I have taken my 2 youngest daughters (ages 4 and 6) dressed up in their pretty princess gowns and just this past week I took those 2 littlest girls with their 18 y.o. sister for a special Victorian Christmas High Tea on New Year's Eve. The food has always been delicious. From tea sandwiches, to soups, to salads, to savories, to sweets...everything has been delicious. Even with the items that I personally didn't prefer, I appreciated the variety. Such variety is offered in the tea service sets! The service has always been friendly and gracious when we tend to linger. The gift shop stocked full of goodies--except, it seems, the tea I am always wanting to purchase to take home with me is out. So many delicious choices of tea. I have several bags in my cupboard right now from there! White Ambosia, Carmel Toffee, Blueberry Bliss, Summer Orchard, & Apple Pie. I do wish that you kept the Christmas teas available for purchase into January. The atmosphere cannot be beat in this beautiful, old home. The only thing that I really wish they would change is the prep of the tea. I know that this service varies from tea room to tea room. But at SG when our tea has been brought to us we have been told to allow it to steep longer before pouring. How long? How long has it been steeping? Did I order white, green or black tea this time! All vary in steeping times. What did my daughters order? Also, after sitting, visiting and sipping over a period of time the tea remains soaking in the tea leaves. Most teas become quite strong or bitter by the time I get to the bottom third of the pot. My younger daughters LOVE tea, but they don't drink it down fast. I feel wasteful asking for a fresh pot when there is a lot left, but I don't want to suffer through drinking bitter tea just to get a fresh pot. I prefer tea rooms that steep the tea in the back room the desired length of time and remove the tea leaves before bringing the pot to the table. Again, this is the only service lacking in my opinion from this lovely establishment. Perhaps this would not be an issue for some, but I felt that it was important for serious tea sippers to know. We are looking forward to many frequent returns to our favorite stop in Sumner! Our New Year's Eve visit, we decided, MUST become an ongoing tradition!

      Tearoom response:

We would be happy to deliver your tea in a 'teasac' so that you can steep it to your own liking. We have found that most people enjoy the ritual of pouring the tea through a strainer, but we do have other methods available. Just let us know how you would like it served. We also replace the leaves after the 2nd steeping, so please don't hesitate to ask for a fresh pot. I'm glad you enjoy our establishment!

Just had a wonderful Christmas tea at the Secret Garden with a large group of family. We all loved it! Our group ranged from a 3 year old to our 92 year old grandmother. Everyone enjoyed the perfectly prepared food and wonderful service. The old victorian mansion is the best setting for tea. Still dreaming of those wonderful little desserts. We will be back soon! My daughter's and I had an absolutely fantastic time having the Victorian Christmas Tea. From the sparkling cider, tea choices and the lovely recommendations from our server, and the always delicious scones and assortment of foods, I cannot begin to express how perfect everything was. Our keepsake teacups are absolutely darling and we will add them to our collection! We had to have our cranberry pudding packed to-go because we were absolutely too full to enjoy it while we were there. Even the next day it was still delicious. Thank you to all the staff for such a wonderful time, the house and all decorations were beautiful also.

I'm a RED HATTER, and I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK! On December 13, 2009, a group of 37 Red Hatters had 10 a.m. reservations at the tea room for a tea party. This reservation was made in October 2009. When we arrived about 10 to ten, in the cold (temperatures were below freezing that morning), we were not allowed to enter as they had JUST MOPPED the dining room and the floors were wet! The tables hadn't even been set yet. After MUCH discussion about these elderly ladies standing in the cold we were allowed to enter, but only into the GIFT SHOP! If you have ever been there... 37 ladies with tea party hats don't fit in this tiny little gift shop, we were in the hallway and on the stairs waiting. About 10:15 while we were waiting for the dining room... someone showed up at the front hallway to mop it... Needless to say, I spoke up and insisted they NOT mop as many of our ladies were in their 80's and we did not want them slipping on wet floors! The food was lovely; the service was difficult to get additional hot water to our tea pots however. And I caution you to be very careful about the TOTAL price for the tea! We were told 31.95 per person. When checking out, 9% sales tax and 18% gratuity were added. Yet on their web site... the 'RED HAT' tea is $30 and states; 'includes tax and gratuity'. Our menu was VERY SIMILAR to this $30 tea advertised on the web site! Our hostess had to pay an additional $309 to cover these costs out of her own pocket. We were also informed about 'If it should snow'... unless the State Police tell the media that traffic should stay off the roads because of snow... you will be obligated to pay for the tea. I found the owner uncompromising, and not very gracious... and sincerely hope you will get in writing from HIM, with his signature... the TOTAL cost of the tea per person which would include any additional charges such as tax and gratuity... prior to committing your group at this facility. I feel this review may not get posted, as I said, he was very unprofessional and closed minded and didn't seem to care if we'd return. It should be noted that we had planned that day to return in August and again next December, we will not be returning, we will take our business some where that may be more upfront with the costs and housekeeping, as well, shows some type of holiday greeting for Red Hatters. Please also note: that if you take your own PA system, the staff will use it with out so much as a thank you. All in all, my second time there was an absolute disappointment, not much holiday cheer from management at this facility!

      Tearoom response:

We open at 10:00, but allowed this party to enter at 9:45, after a minute of clearing vacuum cords and other hazards out of the way. We asked that they browse in our gift shop or wait in the hallway while we finished rearranging tables and chairs for this group. (Tables were set the night before.) At 9:58 (2 minutes before we open for business) we turned the dining room over to the hostess, who with an assistant set out party favors for over 15 minutes. Concerned about the guests waiting in the hall, I volunteered my staff to assist with the favors, but help was declined. The hostess of the party recognizes that the menu she selected was not one of our special 'group teas', and that it was her oversight that the tax and gratuity were not included. The Victorian Christmas Tea includes many items not served on the $30 Red Hat Tea: three savories, two desserts, extra fruit and the Cranberry Pudding Cake with Vanilla Butter Sauce. These additional items not only add to the food cost of the tea set, but are additional courses to be baked and prepared by our staff, and additional dishes to be delivered by our servers and washed by our dishwashers. The lovely and gracious hostess of the party has contacted us to apologize for the scene that was caused and to assure us that she will be back with her group of Red Hatters and that everyone had a great time. She also assured us that our server who used her PA system to present the tiered racks thanked her for the use of it. We are sorry that you feel your experience was less than excellent. We hope that you find a tea room that is able to accomodate your needs.

Great food in a fabulous setting. Everything on the high tea was excellent, so I went back with another friend for lunch. Try the Sampler where you get a cup of soup, 1/2 sandwich and both pea and cranberry salad. Both salads are best of class...wish I had the recipes! The perfect place for lunch with a friend or go for the high tea for a truly decadent afternoon meal. I will be a regular despite the 1/2 hour drive from my home.

This is a wonderful tea room! My family brought me here for Mother's Day again this year and everything was fantastic. For Mother's Day, there was a set menu, so all we had to do was each pick out our favorite tea from the expansive section of leaf teas (my favorite - Russian Caravan) and enjoy. The food was wonderful and plentiful - a great value - and came with a beautiful tea cup and saucer to take home. I love the atmosphere of this beautiful old home. It reminds me of the home I grew up in in Missouri. Afterwards we took pictures in the garden out front. This tea room is the perfect place for a special occasion or just a great time with friends. Highly recommended.

My mom and I really enjoyed the Sweetheart Luncheon. It was nice and leisurely with wonderful service, delicious food, and an ambiance of beauty and tranquilty. We sampled the White Ambrosia (the smell is heaven), Caramel Toffee and Afternoon Garden Party teas and liked them all. My mom had the turkey salad sandwich, while I had the Lorraine Vegetarian quiche - both were very yummy! The frozen cranberry salad and tomato soup was good and we barely had room for our petite Valentine sweets. Oh, and the scones were perfect, with fresh devonshire cream and creamy lemon curd. I'd definitely recommend this tea room and look forward to going again.

This Tea Room was such a disappointment to me and my friends. It was our Christmas treat to ourselves and we were so looking forward to it. We had to stand and wait in the very small entry area for 30 mins. Tables in the dining room were empty, but we had to wait and wait and wait. Once seated we had to wait yet another fifteen minuets before we were approached by a waitress.Another ten minuets before we received our tea and placed our order. The food was OK. Some very strange flavor combination's. Also everything was backwards. We were given our scones first, then our sorbet, and then the stacker with the sandwiches and savories. l always understood that those should be offered first. You may ask were they busy. NO. Three small tables were all that was accupied. All of the tables that were empty when we arrived and could not be seated at, were still empty when we left. This is not the Best Tea room in WA. There are other lovely places that are way better and not so rude, lacking and expensive. We will never return .

I recently had my Baby Shower here and it was everything I wanted it to be. A lot of my guests actually thought I was crazy for having a 'Tea Party' for a baby shower but they were won over the minute they sat down. The atmosphere was very calming, it was Victorian but not in the hoity-toity stuck up way. Just the architecture alone made the trip worth it.The tea menu was very extensive and everyone present quickly found a favorite.( My favorite was the White Ambrosia - A white tea) The food was amazing and the Pea Orzo salad was a huge hit. The decor and presentation of both the tea and the food had every one of us feeling like princesses. I definitly recommend this tea house to everyone I talk to who is interested in tea. We have all decided to get together atleast once a month and have a Princess day. Thank you to the entire staff, your attitude, service and one-on-one interactions made this day perfect.

I would like to comment on Jennifers review she made on the Secret Garden. She stated that the owner kicked her out and that she displayed very bad behavior. Well I actually was a customer at the same time, and I would like to say that Jennifers children are not as lovely as she thinks. All I heard for about two hours was annoying, loud screams. If anyone should be embarrassed it should be the mother of those undisciplined children. And as for being kicked out, I happened to have over heard the owner, very tastefully ask if there was anything she could do to make the children more comfortable. This hardly equates being kicked out. In my opinion, these children should not even be taken out in public, much less an elequent place like the Secret Garden. Jennifer should really think about spending more time training and discipling her children and less time on the computer coming up with this kind of nonsense.

I attended tea w/ my 2 children, my mother and another friend. About an hour into our tea, we were asked by the manager to leave due to the behavior of my children. My children were very well behaved and we actually had a few tables come and comment to us how well behaved they were. The manager was very rude and unprofessional. She should be embarrassed for her behavior & I'm sure this isn't the first time she has been rude to her customers.

I love the victorian times and of course afternoon teas and I was extreamly impressed with the tea room. I was in awe from the start with the outside and was blown away when I walked inside, it was absolutely beautiful. Everyone was very nice and ready to serve. So many teas to choose from. The service was wonderful and the food was delicious. I will come back again and will tell my friends that like a old fashioned tea like me, this is the place to go. Thank you for a wonderful experience...God bless

My husband and I recently visited your wonderful victorian tea room and were absolutely delighted. The food was extremely tasteful. The server named Jack was charming and attentive. The hostess, Lindsey was delightful. The victorian atmosphere was the perfect afternoon. I would recommend everyone to try this tea room. You'll be addicted.

I just love the new location for this tea room. The house is lovely and the rooms charming. I enjoyed the Lavender Tea, which was delicious and plentiful. My favorites were the chicken salad sandwich and the scrumptuous scones. An added feature, which I took advantage of was, the offering of additional scones! They were wonderful! The gift shop held many temptations and I brought home a few items I couldn't live without. I look forward to another visit in the near future. Sharron de Montigny Tea Rooms Northwest

This was a very fun experience for my sisters and I. The only somewhat negative input I have was similar to another patron; we had asked for a particular table that sat in the back by the restrooms (several weeks earlier when we had made reservations) and we were told that they didnt use that table. However we couldnt help but notice when we arrived and were seated at our table, that particular table was indeed in use. :(

We have been long awaiting the opening of the Secret Garden Tea House in Sumner. Our party of 10 immensely enjoyed our 5 course Mother's Day Tea. The staff was friendly and the food was wonderful. We will be sure to visit again.

With any review, I always like to start with the positive. I found the selection of whole teas generous. Both the egg salad and the cashew chicken sandwich were tasty along with the side, frosty cranberry. The lemon chiffon dessert was refreshing and delightful. Is there a negative to dining at The Secret Garden? I only have one comment, inflexibility. For example, my mom asked the hostess if we could sit at a specific table. The hostess responded that the table was already reserved. She then sat us at a different table. After we ordered, ate and enjoyed our tea we noticed no one sat at the table my mom inquired about. As we left to pay for the bill we noticed the reserved table was for someone arriving 3 1/2 hours after we arrived. Another example of inflexibility is there may be a extra charge on substituting sides. Will my mom and I return? We are not sure. We drove 70 miles round trip to visit the tea room. If we do visit it won't be for awhile and we won't sit at table #10 (you can hear conversations from the kitchen).

I took my granddaughter here to celebrate her first grown up job and we had a fabulous time. Everything was perfect. The food was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful, and I cook for a living. The service was great and the surroundings were delightful. We enjoyed the gift shop also. We will be back.

The food and ambiance was wonderful. We lost power due to bad weather while we were there but everything was great anyway. Friendly people. A great addition to Sumner. We had fun picking chestnuts off the ground !

The tea room experience in a vintage victorian home was outstanding. I enjoyed the beautifully presented luncheon, which included specialty quiche that was well presented along with tasty pea salad. I enjoyed my tea along with a fantastic scone. My party consisted of nine ladies and each loved the experience and will return for more luncheon celebrations.

Amazing was my initial reaction! The variety of loose leaf teas (white ambrosia and red fruit medley are my favorites). My friends I and came for lunch and had the wonderful deep dish quiche. The scones are the best I have ever had, but must be eaten with the fresh lemon curd and sweet cream (devonshire). On my next trip I will definitely have the High Tea - the next table over raved about the desserts!

This tea room is western Washington's best kept secret. I am so, so excited that they are moving to Sumner! We (girlfriends and I) would drive to Bellevue just to have tea there. Now they will be in our beautiful little Sumner (less than a half hour south of Bellevue for all of you sad to see them leave Factoria). I've been to tea rooms from London to BC and this is the best food and selection I have ever had in this country. The price is outstanding for all the goodies served (including unlimited pots of tea, scones, lemon curd, cream & jam- unheard of anywhere else that I have ever been). There is always a wonderful assortment of warm savories and also yummy finger sandwiches, fresh fruit, cookies, pastries, chocolate confections, etc. So, so yummy. It is the closest tea to an original English tea that I have had. The food (and decor) is not fancy-gourmet ridiculous like many of the other tea rooms out there in expensive hotels, etc. that really take away from the experience of eating a very traditional English high-tea. No random exotic ingredients, no skimpy pieces of art inspired funky fish or meat on bread with carved veggies, etc. None of that business. Just plenty of good, high quality traditional English fare at the Secret Garden for a great price! Go and enjoy!

You really need to make reservations to go here. Being this is inside a mall, I was walking through with my mom and thought “oh, a teahouse that would be fun”. They only had one party inside and I was made to feel very unwelcome because I did not have reservations but they did seat us out on the patio (which is a fake patio inside the mall). We had tea and scones, this was my first experience at a teahouse but since I have been to plenty. This is still my favorite place to get scones, very yummy but now I go into there very cute shop and get them to go.

I brought my 3 year old daughter here for tea the other day and we had a wonderful time. The patio seating was less formal than the dining room, so I didn't feel bad about having my daughter there, as I have at other tea rooms. The food was superb and they have a great selection of teas. We highly recommend The Secret Garden!

My mother took me here for my 25th Birthday with 2 of my friends. This was my first experience at a tea room and it was such a delight!! I really didn't have high hopes because I'm not much a tea drinker, but everything was perfect. Food, tea, service, atmosphere...everything! Thanks for making my birthday very special!

Of all the places I have been in the Seattle area to have tea, this is my least favorite. The shop is open to the Mall, and Factoria is not known for its ambiance. It felt tacky to me. On top of that, we arrived at lunch time and their menu was very time restricted and rigid. When we requested a single scone, we were informed we could only buy a plate. I ordered soup and they brought me the wrong kind and then informed me that they didn't have the soup they had originally told me they did. Anywhere else but here! (I like the Village Yarn and Tea shop).

I have been luck enough to have afternoon tea in many special places - Kensington Palace, The Empress, the Palm Court at the Hotel Del Coronado. The Secret Garden surpasses these places in service, mood, and food. The scones at the Secret Garden are the best I've ever had. Thank you Secret Garden.

We had a large party (20) for a wedding shower tea arranged at the last minute. Elizabeth was wonderful, the food tasty and the environment extremely nice without being overly fussy. Thank you, to the SGTH for a successful wedding shower-and no work!

My mother and I have made a hobby of visiting TeaRooms. We found the Secret Garden TeaRoom to be a delight! The food was fresh and delicious. The service was outstanding, friendly and welcoming. For less than $20 we had a tea tray overflowing with 3 different sandwiches, fresh fruit, 3 savories and several desserts. This is in addition to unlimited pots of tea and unlimited scones with Devonshire cream, homemade lemon curd and homemade raspberry jam. All menu items are also available to purchase and take home if you desire to share this with someone else. I think J. George should come back and give them another try. I found absolutely nothing lacking in the quantity or the quality of the food. The service was excellent and our waitress was a delight. In our experience in this area, the prices are far below other TeaRooms and the quality and quantity of the food is exceptional. The decor is a wonderment and adds to the appeal. We will definately be visiting again!

My mother was recently up from LA and she is a Tea-Room-a-holic!! We had a group of eight ladies from ages 13-85, many whom had never experienced high tea before and all were thrilled. I am planning to go again soon with some out of town guests as this is one of the nicest and cost-effective tea rooms in the Seattle area.

My daughter's first real tea party was yesterday at The Sercret Garden and she's still talking about it. What a great place. The food was really good as was the services and you just have to experience the ambience. It's almost too charming! We will be going back again and again for years to come.
