  • The Pleasanton Hotel

Ambience : Very good, nice victorian hotel, dining room facing the street. Quiet, relaxing. Your table is set with teapots with individual tea cozies, strainer, strainer dish, tea cups and small plates. We chose the High Tea for $18.95 per person. There were 5 of us. When I made the reservation, I inquired ahead of time if possible for a diet request. The chef accomodated our request for vegetarian sandwiches for 2 people in our party. Service : Very good, attentive server, friendly, prompt, additional hot water for your tea is delivered right away. Fare : The 3 layer tiered tray came with the following items : top level were the finger sandwiches of the day : baby shrimp sandwich, chicken and red grape, strawberry/cucumber and cream cheese and egg salad. The middle level had the mini sweets – cheesecake square, pecan caramel square, a chocolate cup with cream and strawberries, a slice of banana loaf, a pate a choux swan filled with strawberry, mini carrot cake square, a flourless chocolate mousse cupcake to die for! etc. The bottom level contained the sweet scone with a sprinkling of sugar on top, the chocolate dipped tuxedo strawberry and the pastry cream filled profiterole with chocolate on top. The scone is freshly baked and warm. Served on the side, were the small dish of red jam, lemon curd (it was very good with the addition of real vanilla bean specks) and real English devonshire cream (yum!!). For the teas, you have a selection of about 5 types, I think. Most of us chose the house tea blend, Blue Mist, with a hint of lavender. Coffee is also available instead of tea. Overall : the price is right for the amount of fare, we even had a few pieces to take home and enjoy later. Good sandwiches and sweets served. Highly recommended. Kitchen staff very accomodating. Will come back again and bring more family and friends!

My review of this tearoom : Atmosphere : Very good Service : Good Fare : For $27.50 per person (there were 5 in our party on one table), this is what each person got to eat from the tiered tray : 1 piece small Yorshire pudding with horseradish cream and roast beef, maybe 2 cucumber sandwich, 2 egg salad and tomato, 1 smoked salmon, 1 cheese sandwich (I forgot the variety), sweet green and red grapes (for fillers). The savories is followed by 1 scone with red jam and devonshire cream (this cream has barely the thickness and flavor of real clotted cream and has the texture of whipped cream. Are they cutting corners here!!??). Afterwards, 1 square housemade shortbread cookie and 1 small 1.5 x 1.5 inch sticky toffee pudding. There is no choice of tea (I think they only serve one kind, PG Tips?? or Yorkshire Gold). The server comes around and constantly fills your cup with fresh tea. That is pretty much it. For the fare, it is overpriced, and that is not including the 15% gratuity. Would I come back : Maybe, just to browse and shop at their incredibly stocked store and see who other celebrities patronizes the place, but not for the food (which I believe should be priced in the $16-$20 range only).
