  • The Front Porch Tea Room

I was anxious to try this tea room on our vacation last summer as we were traveling in the area with our family. We saw Front Porch listed in the top 100 and vowed to try it. I have to say that, while the food was very good, the tea selection was only fair. However, one big point to note is that this tea room is NOT family friendly!! We arrived with our infant daughter and three year old but later realized that they do not allow children under the age of 5 without a private party. We were served, but it was not without some disapproving stares and we would not go back with our children. We later tried Olivia's Tea Room and this establishment was just on par with Front Porch, but it was MUCH more family friendly! There was even things on the menu that my son wanted to eat and they gave him a place setting that was just right for him. We love to introduce culture and new things to our children. Front Porch Tea Room isn't a place for that. If you are an older lady or an adult group, this place might be very nice. But for families, I have to heartily recommend Olivia's! Terrific tea and food like Front Porch, but a LOT more welcoming to families! Also, note that the bathroom is upstairs here, which can be a real problem for people with disabilities.

    Tearoom response:

    Terri,

I am so sorry you had such a bad experience. We do have an age limit of 5 years old, not because we do not love children, but because we get angry calls from our patrons who indicated that they came for a lovely, quiet tea and had a noisy unhappy child interrupt their tea. We hold many special teas just for children and we have a ball doing them. I am sorry if my staff made you uncomfortable. They always try to be friendly and accomodating. Again, I am very sorry that we did not come up to your expectations, but, we do indicate in our web site and our newsletter about the age limit. We also advise everyone making a reservation that the bathroom is on the second floor. This house is 150 years old. As to the tea selection, we always have two teas prepared but we have a tea list with over 50 teas on it which the staff can prepare for you if requested. Again, my apologies.

    Bonnie
