The Royal Tea Room and Gift Shoppe
My experience at The Royal Tea Room was good, but nothing to 'write home' about. The food and the tea was delicious. The server (a young lady) was very polite and refilled our teacups promptly. The tea room and the gift shop is beautifully decorated, very Victorian and whimsical. The Tea Room itself is VERY small and a bit dark..so if you are claustrophobic..watch out! A few negatives: We had to wait to be seated several minutes even though we arrived on time for our 1:30pm reservation and all the tables were empty, the teapot was not left at the table with a cozy as it is done in other establishments I frequent, the lady who seated us (she had a british accent) had a very unfriendly demeanor. She never smiled and looked at me up and down before seating us. I felt very uncomfortable with that. I had read a previous review from another patron who complained about the same thing..I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt, but now I know what that patron was talking about. The patron felt discriminated because she was hispanic..I am Cuban-American..coincidence? Maybe it is just something that was done unconciously, and the hostess did not realize the negative impact. If that is the case, I hope she reads this review and makes a mental note for future patrons. In the hospitality industry, this is not acceptable behaviour and I hope that this will be taken as constructive criticism.
