  • Lady Bedford's Tea Parlour

Having lived in England, I developed a necessary and abiding fondness for tea and tea houses. I had great expectations for today's first visit to Lady Bedford's. Alas, I am stretching to give it 3 stars. Let's start with the pluses - lovely Victorian tea room in the charming Village of Pinehurst, attentive and friendly waitress, nice tea selection. On the other side of the equation, the food was beyond bland. The limited menu was expected and therefore you would think Lady Bedford could mange something delicious or at least decent for each item especially at 'boutique', speciality level prices. I ordered egg salad on croissant and a salad = $20! Now I know egg salad is not the most inspirational thing but Lady Bedford, do try again or take off the menu. The salad followed suit -- unimaginative mixed greens with two slices of tomato to count as 'seasonal vegetables'. Lady Bedford, you disappointed and now I understand why the Pinehurst lunch crowd is always at the Villager Deli, which serves fresh food at a great value. For tea house lovers, please try Dobra's in Black Mountain and Asheville NC. They recently opened. A wonderful zen tea house with amazing tea AND yummy, imaginative food.
