  • The Tudor House

I’ve been to numerous tea houses in the Midwest, but when my family came to visit we stopped at our first west coast varietal, the Tudor House. The food and ambiance was a little different than what I was used to, with a menu focusing more on authentic British food rather than an abundant variety of tea. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, as I found the food to be delicious (The spinach and cheese pie that I ordered was dynamite). The prices were also reasonable, with the exception of a $1.75 charge if you wanted Devonshire cream with your scone. (I was a bit surprised by this as I’ve always had cream come with my scones for free.) Unfortunately, the service at the Tudor House was incredibly lacking. My family and I waited a good 10-15 minutes before a server stopped by our table to take our drink order, which was rather frustrating, because by then we had plenty of time to look at the menu and already decided on what to eat! When you’re at a tea house it would be nice to be able to actually drink tea while you wait for your food to arrive, not order everything all at once. Also, while our server wasn’t outright rude, she made absolutely no effort to be pleasant to us. I know there were only two servers working the room while we were there, but the restaurant was hardly what I would call crowded. It’s unfortunate how bad service can kill an otherwise pleasant meal.
