  • The English Rose Tea Room and Gifts

We had tea at the English Rose today after reading the sometimes glowing, sometimes odd reviews. May I say how impressed my friend and I were with this tea house. My girlfriend and I have been doing tea in the Bay Area for 2 years. We try a new tea house or hotel high tea every 3 months. Some have been great, some are not so great. I can't believe my girlfriend and I didn't try the Rose sooner. (We live in San Francisco.) The Rose is a GEM among tea houses. Here are some of the highlights: Tea and cookies are offered on a table while you wait to be seated. A very nice touch. They also offer a tea of the day for free. Yes, it is a rather 'cramped' tea house compared to most, but it was also very quaint and cozy. The waitresses seem to be more 'aware' of your needs because the room is small. The food was bountiful. So much so, that my girlfriend and I took some home. It was absolutely delicious. We had the Queen Tea (I believe it was called) which included a very tender scone, hot savories, grapes, sandwiches and a wide variety of desserts. The cost was $20. They have less expensive choices. They offered a nice variety of teas and what we ordered was delicious. My girlfriend had a rose tea that was very good, even though I'm not into food items that are rose flavored. There are also items for sale that are quite lovely and reasonably priced. There was jewelry, cards, a small selection of teapots and cups, and various other 'pretties.' Both my girlfriend and I have decided we will be back to the English Rose next time, since we were told they change their menu. We have never tried a tea house twice, which indicates how superb the Rose was.
